Evangeline stood up, her hands shaking as She decided to follow Mrs. Jenkins' advice and headed toward the market. The bustling streets were filled with people, making it easier for her to blend in. She kept her head down and moved swiftly, avoiding any lingering glances.
At the market, Evangeline approached a fruit vendor who seemed friendly. "Excuse me, sir, do you know if anyone here is hiring?" she asked in her graceful soft voice. The vendor, an older man with a kind smile, nodded. "Aye, the baker's looking for help. Just down the street, you can't miss it."
Evangeline thanked him and made her way to the bakery. The warm aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries wafted through the air as she entered. An old lady who seemed kind with flour-dusted hands greeted her. "Good morning, dear. How can I help you?" the lady asked with a gentle smile.
"I heard you might be looking for help. I'm new to the area and in need of work," Evangeline said, pausing before she added, "My name is Eva—Evelyn."
The lady studied her for a moment before nodding. "Of course, Evelyn. I'm Rose, you can call me Rose. We could use an extra pair of hands here. Can you start tomorrow?" Relief washed over her. "Yes, absolutely. Thank you so much."Rose smiled warmly. "You're welcome, dear. I'll see you tomorrow morning then. It's a pleasure to have you."---
The Next Morning,
The first rays of dawn filtered through the curtains of the small room. Evangeline rubbed her eyes and stretched, as she sighed the reality of her new life slowly sinking in. Remembering as she would start her job at the bakery, she quickly washed up and dressed in another simple gown and left her long ginger hair as it was, leaving the bangs braided and tucked beneath her ears. She ensured she had her eye contacts on, a simple brown color hiding the bright blue ones she had. Glancing at her reflection, she decided she might need to cover her face more and draped a simple cape over her shoulders, pulling the hood over her head and left a few of her hair strands so she looked normal and not like a sociopath.
Heading downstairs, Mrs. Jenkins greeted her once again with a warm smile. Downstairs, a few commoners were already seated and having breakfast. It was still early morning; the sun was just beginning to rise and the warm orange light glazed into the inn.
"Goodmorning. I hope you slept well, and you are lucky, we are serving hot cocoa this morning! Would you like a glass?" She smiled warmly. Evangeline nodded politely.
"Sure, why not? Thank you," She answered, shooting an awkward smile. After a quick breakfast of fresh bread and cheese, along with a warm cup of hot cocoa that helped her calm down, Evangeline made her way to the bakery that stood across a few streets from the inn. The streets were already bustling with people, the horses and carriages filling the roads as many people walked here and there.
When she arrived at the bakery, the little bells above the door jingled signaling someone had entered, and Rose waited for her at the counter.
"Goodmorning Rose," Evangeline cracked a small smile.
"Goodmorning Evelyn! I hope you are ready for first day!" Rose greeted her with a small hug. Evangeline nodded, as she thanked for having her.
Rose began to show Evangeline around the bakery, as she explained the things she'd have to do. Kneading dough, arranging pastries, baking and serving customers. As the morning flew by, Evangeline busied herself with the tasks. The warmth and coziness brought her back a flood of memories, as she zoned out into the times she spent with her mother in the royal kitchen, yet another memory.
**Flashback**
Princess Evangeline stood on a stool in the kitchen, her tiny hands covered in flour and chocolate. Her mother, Queen Isabella stood beside her daughter, guiding her hands as they kneaded the dough together.
"Just like that princess," Isabella said with a gentle voice. Evangeline looked up at her mother with wide eyes as if she just realized something, but she was really eager to learn. The amazing work of baking made her curiosity pop. "Will the bread be ready soon, Mama?" She asked.
Isabella chuckled softly. "Princess, it'll take some time, but patience makes it taste even better,"
That was one of the things her majesty taught Evangeline, patience. They spent hours in the kitchen, mixing the ingredients and shaping the dough, as the room was filled with the sound of their laughter and giggles and smell of baked goods. Evangeline's heart swelled with excitement and happiness as she bonded with her mother.
"Can we make some cookies too, Mama?' Evangeline asked, her crystal blue eyes sparkling with excitement.
Isabella smiled and nodded. "Of course, we can."
**End of Flashback**
Snapping back to reality, Evangeline focused on her work, as she kneaded the cookie dough. Rose noticed her momentary distraction.
"Everything alright?"
Evangeline sighed and nodded, a bittersweet smile resting on her lips. "Just a memory, I'm alright,"
The old woman gave her an encouraging smile and patted her shoulder.
---As the sun began to set, Evangeline finished her tasks at the bakery and bid Rose goodnight. The streets were still full of people, and she enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere as she walked back to the inn. The cool evening air was refreshing after a day of work. The sky was full of soft ethereal colors, the pinks and oranges blending together into one as the sun slowly fades.
Upon arriving at the inn, Evangeline headed straight to her room. She washed up, feeling the grime and fatigue of the day wash away with the warm water.
After dressing into a nightgown, she put on a loose dress on top and sighed, taking a deep breath as she stared at her own reflection. She tried not to worry much, but her anxiety crept through her every second.
Feeling slightly more at ease, she made her way downstairs for dinner. The common area was filled with the warm glow of candlelight and the hum of conversations. Mrs. Jenkins greeted her with a smile as she approached the dining area.
"Good evening, Evelyn. I hope your first day went well, i remember you mentioning your job" Mrs. Jenkins said. "It did, thank you. The bakery is lovely, and Rose has been wonderful," Evangeline replied, genuinely grateful.
"That's wonderful to hear. Please, have a seat. We have a hearty stew and fresh bread for dinner tonight," Mrs. Jenkins said, gesturing to an empty table. Evangeline took a seat and soon found herself enjoying a delicious meal. The warm food and friendly atmosphere helped her relax even further. She listened to the conversations around her, feeling a sense of connection to the people in this new place.
