Chapter 2: Stuntin' Like My Daddy
NO ONE'S POV:
(We see Y/N in the gym with his class, sitting near Lexi & Rue.)
Mrs. Applegate: So, let's start with a little improvisation. I'd like each of you to get up and tell us a five-minute story about your summer.
(Y/N)'s thoughts: There's no way I'm going first.
(Rue slinks down.)
Rue: [groans softly]
Mrs. Applegate: Looks like we have our first volunteer: Rue.
(Y/N): [softly] Thank God.
Rue: [mutters] Please don't do this to me.
Mrs. Applegate: Come on, everyone. Let's give her a little encouragement.
(Y/N and the entire class clap for Rue as she walks up on stage, the lights go out, and a spotlight is lit on her.)
Rue: Um, a memory?
Mrs. Applegate: Anything that had an impact on you this summer.
Rue: Uh, I don't...I don't...
Rue: I can't think of...
Mrs. Applegate: Just...relax your body. Release the tension.
Rue: [exhales]
Mrs. Applegate: And just breathe.
(She starts remembering her summer after her overdose.)
Rue: So this...this summer?
Mrs. Applegate: Yes.
Rue: I'm--I'm having trouble, uh, like, remembering...uh, something, you know.
Mrs. Applegate: Just tell us a specific memory.
Rue: Uh, okay. Uh...I was, um, with my mom, and my, uh, my little sister, and we were, uh, listening to this...this song.
("Fly Me to the Moon" by Bobby Womack plays over her eventful summer.)
Rue: I'm sorry, but I--I can't think of anything, so...
Mrs. Applegate: Just...
Rue: Um...uh...I'm, uh...I'm done. Do I have to do this?
(Cut to Y/N & Lexi watching this as they overhear two girls talking about Rue.)
Girl 1: She's a mess, dude. Honestly, I bet it's brain damage.
Lexi: You're being fucking rude.
(Y/N): Took the words right out of my mouth.
(She looks at Y/N as her turns to face the two girls.)
(Y/N): Y'all some bitches.
(Rue walks off stage & into the girl's restroom with Lexi following her. Back in class with Y/N...)
Mrs. Applegate: So...who's next?
(The class stays silent.)
Mrs. Applegate: Really, guys?
(She looks at Y/N.)
(Y/N): [groans] Fine. [softly] Fuck it.
(He stands up & makes his way to the stage.)
Mrs. Applegate: Thank you, Mr. McKay.
(He is now on stage with the spotlight lit on him.)
(Y/N): That's bright. So, a memory from this summer, right?
Mrs. Applegate: Right.
(Y/N): Okay, well...this summer I became the new CAMO Bantamweight champion.
(The class doesn't clap.)
(Y/N): I was kinda expecting some sort of applause but whatever. The fight lasted all five rounds, Houston Scibek, my opponent, landed a nice takedown on me. My takedown defense has always been shit...
Mrs. Applegate: (Y/N)--
(Y/N): But I was able to get him into a beautiful triangle choke. Poetry in motion really. I squeezed but he wouldn't tap so I put him to sleep. The referee raised my hand in victory, handed me my belt, and I hugged my coaches. Oh! Houston's alive by the way. Just thought I'd get that across.
Mrs. Applegate: Thank you, (Y/N).
(The class claps.)
(Y/N): Cool.
(He makes his way off the stage & sits next to Lexi who looks upset. Y/N wants to ask what's wrong but decides to leave her be.)
Lunch
(Y/N, with a tray full of food in hand, is looking for a table to sit at.)
(Y/N)'s thoughts: I should really make my own lunch but I always forget to make it. Or...too lazy.
(Y/N): [chuckles]
(As he's looking for a table to sit at, he notices Lexi at a table, sitting by herself. So he walks over to her.)
(Y/N): Hey.
Lexi: Hi.
(Y/N): Are you sitting by yourself?
Lexi: Does it look that way?
(Y/N): It does.
Lexi: Then yes. I am sitting by myself.
(Y/N): Mind if I change that?
(He sits next to her.)
(Y/N): I should've waited for your answer, huh?
Lexi: Yeah.
(Y/N): I'll get up then.
Lexi: [giggles] You're okay.
(Y/N): Great. You probably don't remember me from class. I'm--
(Before he can introduce himself, he's interrupted by the football coach.)
Football Coach: You guys pumped?
Lunch Goers: Yeah!
Football Coach: Are we gonna win?
Lunch Goers: Yeah!
Football Coach: Then let's hear it for the East Highland Blackhawks!
(The football team comes out & the cheerleaders come down some stairs.)
(Y/N): Wow. Back to it. I'm--
Lexi: I know who you are, (Y/N).
(Y/N): Of course you do. We're classmates.
Lexi: Not only because of that.
(Y/N): What else?
Lexi: Your brother is dating my sister.
(Y/N): My brother--Oh! You're Lexi. I can't believe I never noticed you before. Must be all of the brain damage.
Lexi: It's something I'm used to.
(Y/N): What's that mean?
Lexi: Nothing.
(Y/N): Hm, right. So you wanna tell me why you're sitting by yourself?
Lexi: Well, my be--friend who I usually sit with at lunch is sitting with someone else.
(Y/N): Rue? Where is she?
(She looks over to where Rue is sitting & Y/N does the same.)
(Y/N): Her loss.
Lexi: How?
(Y/N): I get to sit with you at lunch from here on out.
Lexi: You don't mean that.
(Y/N): I do. You'll see me right here Monday.
Lexi: Until then. I've got two questions for you.
(Y/N): Hit me.
Lexi: You're joking about the brain damage, right?
(Y/N): You heard that. [chuckles] Kinda. Your second question?
Lexi: Why are you talking to me now?
(Y/N): Good question. When you stood up for Rue back in class, I thought that was pretty cool. I like when friends stand up for each other. So, in my book, you're pretty cool.
Lexi: *blush*
(Y/N): I'd like to get to know you. More than the obvious. Like, our siblings.
Lexi: Same, I...would also like to get know you more.
(Y/N): Sweet.
