It wasn't like Stiles Stilinski wasn't used to the feeling of being right. In fact, he was very used to it. Most of the time, when it came to Scott, he was right. Whenever they had an argument, he would come out on top. Maybe it was because Stiles was very clever, or maybe it was because Scott wasn't the brightest. Honestly, it was probably a little bit of both.
But it wasn't just around Scott he was used to being right. He had the annoying tendency to steal his fathers cases when he got the chance. He would then proceed to actually solve them. Stiles was just used to being right, and it never really suprised him when he was.
What did really suprise him, though? Stiles was freaking right about Shivani Caddel being a mermaid. He had known her, what, four days or something? And he called it. He freaking called it. God he couldn't wait to rub Scott's nose in this one.
Both Stiles and Derek stared absolutely thunderstrucked at Shivani Caddel who had switched her legs out for a long, orangey looking tail. They were completely shocked. The mouth hanging open- wide eyed- life changing type of shocked. Werewolves were one thing. Yes, magically hair, fangs and claws that would grow and seconds later disappear. And yes, they did heal if you were to spontaneously stab one of them in the gut. But this? Derek had never seen anything like it and he could barely believe it.
"I was right!" Stiles exclaimed, causing Derek to wince in pain.
"Stiles! If you scream like that in my ear one more time."
"Oh yeah right I'm sorry." Stiles apologized until he realized. "Actually, backtracking a little here. I'm the one keeping you alive."
"What do you mean you were right?" Shivani questioned. This whole experience was both terrifying and oddly uncomfortable for her. This was the first time anyone had seen her in her mermaid form. It felt like someone had just walked in on her changing. She felt incredibly bare. The brunette was also feeling terrified of what Stiles and Derek would do. "You know what? I don't even care." Her only focus was making sure they both would keep her secret.
"I'm going to take a wild guess that you're a better swimmer than me. Would you mind lending me a hand over here?" Without hesitation Shivani used her tail to propel her way over, willing to help. Just before she helped hoist the paralyzed Derek above water, she paused.
"On one condition. You both shut your mouths about this." She bargained. "Or else I'll drown you both and make it look like an accident." She threatened. Stiles and Derek shared a look.
"How about this. Derek here is a werewolf, so is Scott, Boyd, Isaac and Erica. And there's a weird reptilian creature right over there who just paralyzed werewolfie boy here that is probably going to eat us alive or something. Trust me, we're not going to tell anyone." Stiles rushed out.
"Werewolves, really?" Shivani sounded clearly skeptical.
"You're literally half fish. Why are you reluctant to believing in werewolves?"
"Good point."
Shivani wrapped one arm underneath Derek's arm, making it ten times easier for Stiles to keep him above the surface. "So, what's the plan?" Shivani said after a few moments of silence.
"You two get me out of here before I drown." Derek sourly stated. Stiles almost snorted at how idiotically funny it was.
"You're worried about drowning? Did you notice the thing out there with multiple rows of razor sharp teeth." He shot at Derek. With pursed lips, Shivani looked at Derek.
"He's got a point."
"Did you notice I'm paralyzed from the neck down in eight feet of water?" Derek shot back, glaring at Stiles. By this point, Shivani wasn't really sure if he really was glaring on purpose, or if that was just the way his face looked. Maybe his face got stuck that way, who knows. That's what her dad kept telling her when she was crossing her eyes growing up. The rule probably applied to sour looking werewolves too.
"He's also got a point."
"Shivani!" Stiles warned. "I don't see it." Stiles said after looking around.
"Yeah, probably because it's hiding, waiting for the dinner to get done cooking. Which, in case you didn't pick up on, is us." Shivani spat, shooting Stiles a look that said 'don't you dare swim over to the edge of the pool'.
"Maybe it isn't a fan of fish? You should test for us!" Stiles suggested. Shivani rolled her eyes on him.
"You know I literally have to power to actually boil your blood, right?"
"Would the two of you just shut up." Derek growled at the two. Gosh, three minutes or something had passed and he was already getting a headache from their bickering. "Look."
Everyone fixated their eyes at the edge of the pool when the creature suddenly crawled out of the shadows. It's long, murderous claws scraped against the ground. Shivani cringed at the high pitched sound. It stretched its hand, or paw, or whatever, out to touch the water, but as it did, it hissed loudly, pulling it back like it was scoulding hot.
"Wait, did you see that? I don't think it can swim." Stiles concluded.
"Great observation, what gave it away?" Shivani ironically questioned. Her sass almost took her by suprise. She never really showed this side to anyone, let alone some strange boy she barely knew. But hey, after showing him her tail, why not throw a bit of her personality in there as well?
Stiles restrained from answering. He would have thought of a smart comeback, but he was too tired from holding Derek up. Slowly Shivani could feel Derek getting heavier as Stiles lost more and more grip.
"Okay, I don't think I can do this much longer." Stiles admitted.
"Oh no, don't even think about letting go. I don't think I can hold him up by myself." Shivani said.
"You're a literally mermaid. Aren't you suppose to be good at this?" Stiles asked snarkily.
"I'm a mermaid, not a freaking body builder. Does it look like I'll be able to hold this guy up all by myself?" Shivani quipped.
"Don't even think about it." Derek said, agreeing with Shivani. Despite the tail, she didn't exactly look like she'd be able to hold up the practically dead weight of Derek. The half fish thing only took her so far. The rest was up to her.
"Would you just trust me?" Stiles scoffed in annoyance. He was eyeing his phone that was just resting by the edge of the pool. The kanima wasn't anywhere to be seen either, which furthermore boosted his confidence to go for his phone.
"No." Derek instantly replied.
"I'm the one keeping you alive, okay, have you noticed that?" Stiles reminded.
"Hey, what about me?"
"You could make yourself even more useful, Shivani, and just like zap the thing with a bolt of lighting or something." Stiles suggested.
"Okay, yeah, I would. If it weren't for my hand being occupied at the moment!" She responded.
"When the paralysis wears off, who is gonna be able to fight that thing, you or me?" Derek questioned as he stared at Stiles. "You don't trust me I don't trust you. You need me to survive, which is why you are not letting me go."
"Stiles!" Both Shivani and Derek yelled as the boy went for the phone. Effective immediately the two went under like the titanic. Desperstely, Shivani flapped her tail as hard as she could, and after a lot of effort, the two were pushed above water again, frantically gasping for air.
By the time they were both over the surface, Stiles were back by their sides, his phone now at the bottom of the pool. "Please tell me you got ahold of him." Derek said, out of breath. With his arms around Derek once again, offering support, Stiles shook his head.
"Great. We're royally screwed then." Shivani pessimistically concluded. "Next time you think of a stupid plan like that, I'm going to 'zap you with my lightening'."
"So you can do that!"
As if on cue, a loud roar caught the attention of the three. A wolfed out Scott McCall with glowing eyes and barring fangs glared at the lizard like creature, preparing to fight it. Barely believing her eyes, Shivani blinked, clenching her eyes together harshly and opening them again. She repeated the actions until she was sure she wasn't hallucinating. Stiles was for real, they were werewolves.
This opened an entirely new can of worms Shivani wasn't sure if she would be able to close again.
The creature threw itself at Scott who dodged it with ease. He whipped out a set of claws, ready to do some damage to the thing. The creature, how ever, had other plans. It wrapped its long tail around the werewolf, forcefully throwing him across the room and directly into some mirror. Why the hell was there a random mirror in the swimming hall? Shivani shook her head, deciding to ignore the very random placement of the object and instead brainstorm for ways to help the McCall both out.
Groaning loudly, Scott got back in his feet, grabbing a piece of the broken mirror to protect himself with. The lizard-snake-reptilian thing crawled over to Scott, raising an arm to slash at him. But suddenly something stopped it. It's eye caught the sight of the reflection of itself. It was like it was mesmerized by the sight, confused even. With a loud, ear splitting screech, it leaped over Scott, breaking the glass roof as it escaped.
"Thank God." Shivani let out loudly. Together, Stiles and herself swam to the edge of the pool, Scott throwing Derek on land. He froze when his eyes landed on Shivani and her, you know, tail.
"Oh my god Stiles you were right." He gasped, wide eyes struggling to believe what he was seeing.
"I told you!" Stiles proudly flaunted, getting out of the pool himself.
Shivani rolled her eyes. "Could I get a hand here?" She asked, holding one hand out. Stiles grabbed it, starting to pull.
"My gosh you're heavy." He groaned, dropping her back into the pool.
"Gee thanks Stiles. I'm flattered." The girl rolled her eyes. "Maybe you're just scrawny, ever through of that?"
With the help of Scott and his supernatural strength, Shivani got hoisted out of the water. She held her hand out above her tail, slowly clenching it shut. Like the other day, steam fell from her tail as the water dried up. As soon as she was dry, the tail disappeared as quickly as it had formed, transforming back to her legs. She sighed in relief, finally.
Stiles stared wide eyed at where her tail used to be. "So that's what that smoke was." Shivani nodded, getting to her feet.
Stiles could almost feel the curiosity pushing him to question her further about her powers, but he made the choice to put it of till later. Right now, he was more curious about finding out what the hell that thing was.
"How are we suppose to find out what that thing is?" Stiles asked as the three, him, Scott and Shivani entered the parking lot. She had asked to catch a ride with him since Allison had gone home already, and she had been her original ride. The Caddel girl would walk, but she didn't exactly feel like navigating through the small town with that lizard thing on the loose. Between that, and werewolves, who knew what creature was hiding away in the shadows, ready to pounce on its next prey.
"It's called a kanima." Derek answered Stiles' question from behind them. When they turned around, Erica was by him side, no longer knocked out cold.
"You knew the whole time?" Stiles exclaimed in disbelief. Derek shook his head.
"No." He said. "Only when it was confused by its reflection." He explained.
"It doesn't know what it is." Scott pieced together.
"Or who." Derek added.
"Great, a homicidal lizard in the middle of an identity crisis. Perfect." Shivani groaned. As if being a teenager and mermaid wasn't enough, she had just found out werewolves, and kanimas exsisted. And that the latter was out to kill them all. How did she get caught up in all of this? Yesterday her biggest worry was passing math and not letting anyone know her secret. Now she had to make sure everyone kept her secret, along with keeping away from that damned kanima.
"What else do you know?" Stiles pressed. Derek simply shrugged.
"Only stories and rumours." He replied shortly.
The way everyone was speaking so casually about this all was astoundishing to Shivani. Was this something that happen every other day in Beacon Hills or something? Actually, considering the string of weird events that had occurred ever since she arrived in this town, she wasn't convinced it wasn't a daily occurrence.
"But it's like us?"
"A shape-shifter, yes, but it's- it's not right. It's like a-" Derek paused, struggling to find the right word for it.
"An abomination." Stiles finished for him. Derek nodded. Shivani's brows shot up in suprise at the choice of word. It's not exactly how she would have put it, but it did fit.
"Derek, we need to work together in this." Scott decided. "Maybe even tell the Argents." Shivani furrowed her brows. How was Allison and her family mixed up in all of this chaos? Hold up— Shivani didn't even want to know. At this point, nothing would suprise her. They were probably a squad of fairies sent to guard the forest or some stupid shit. As far as Shivani was concerned, it was none of her business.
"You trust them?" Derek asked out of suprise.
"Nobody trusts anyone! That's the problem. While we're here, arguing about who's on what side, there's something scarier, stronger and faster than any of us, and it's killing people and we still don't even know anything about it." There was no denying that what Scott was saying were facts, but it was one hard pill to swallow. At least for a alpha werewolf with trust issues.
"I know one thing. When I find it, I'm going to kill it." With that the Hale wolf and Erica left, and was soon enough out of sight, leaving the three teenagers alone in the dark, dimly lit parking lot.
"Yeah, he does that a lot. I call him sour wolf." Stiles informed Shivani upon noticing her facial expression. The nickname almost made her chuckle.
"I have to get going. My moms waiting for me to pick her up." Scott sighed, getting into his car. Soon enough he speed off, leaving Stiles and Shivani alone in the parking lot.
Shivani turned to look at Stiles. She opened her mouth to speak, but he beat her to it. "I don't know you, and I don't really trust you, but you're so showing me all of your powers."
Shivani could feel the corners of her mouth tug into a grin as she followed him over to the jeep.
"Only if it's you I'm testing them on."
"You're hilarious. Really."
"I try."
