CHAPTER ONE
CLOSE CALL
"the world my oyster i'm the pearl"
˚✧₊*⁎⁺˳✧༚

The absolutely last thing Shivani Caddel wanted to spend her Saturday night doing was visiting the hospital looking for her mom. She worked there as a nurse, and due to late night shifts and being overworked, she didn't have the opportunity to get lunch for herself. So she had called her favorite, and only, daughter to get her some food. Shivani sighed as she locked the car, heading to the hospital. In her right hand she was clutching a brown paper bag that contained a burger and some fries, and in her left she was holding her car keys and phone.

She was used to having to bring her mom food at the hospital, but this was the first time visiting her at Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital. There had been two reasons her parents had made the decision to move to Beacon Hills. Number one, a relative on her dads side had passed away and left a house for them. And number two, her mom had gotten a job offer at the hospital there. So when Shivani happily agreed to the idea, they packed up everything and moved to the small town quickly.

Her dad was currently downtown working himself. He had managed to land himself a job at this car mechanics shop. He loved the stuff, so the job suited him well. Shivani, in a way, had raised herself. Sure, her parents had always been there, but then again not. They were both to be considered workaholics. Maybe that was why the two worked so well together. Shivani learned from a young age that both her parents were miserable at home without work. They'd take every chance to be at work. They loved her just as much as any parents loves their kids, they really did. And Shivani knew that. So she just accepted that this was just the way things were for her. She was cool with it. With parents out, she basically had the house to herself.

Her parents had at least been smart enough to not have any more kids after her. She was forever greatful for it. Maybe it was a little selfish, but she enjoyed the undivided attention she received from them as a kid. Well, almost undivided. Their jobs were like her siblings. Them being so obsessed with work was weird considering their jobs. Shivani figured they just had issues with sitting still, and as neither one of them earned especially much, it wasn't like they could afford not to work as much as they already were.

"You're an angel!" Veronica Caddel exclaimed when she laid eyes on her daughter. She rushed over, lazily giving Shivani a quick side hug and kiss on the cheek before grabbing the brown paper bag. "Please tell me you got the curly fries."

Shivani rolled her eyes. "Yes, mom, I got you curly fries. And I remembered to ask for no pickles on the burger. You're welcome." Her mother grinned widely.

     "You're my favorite kid."

     "I'm you're only kid."

"I won't be home till tomorrow honey. Love you." And with that, her mother disappeared down the corridor with food in hand, hurrying to eat the food while she still could. Shivani sighed, turning on her heels to head in the opposite direction.

She let her eyes slip to a buzzcut headed lanky boy fast asleep in one of the waiting chairs. He mumbled something in his sleep, snores and soft puffs of air escaping his lips as well. He looked uncomfortable and exhausted. The boy looked to be about her age too. Shivani considered maybe waking him up and asking if he was okay, but decided against it. If someone was ever tired enough to actually and fully fall asleep in one of those horribly uncomfortable chairs, it was best to let them sleep. Besides, sleep was usually a way of escape from reality, and most people wanted to escape their reality when they were stuck sleeping in the hospital.

Shivani was tired herself, and right now she only wanted to be in her bathtub, watching some random chic flick on her laptop, eating junk food. Moving had been exhausting, and on Monday, first day of the new school was in for her. She needed her beauty sleep ( funnily enough, said beauty sleep never managed to make her very dark under eye circles any lighter ).

Throwing one last look over her shoulder before leaving the hospital, a loud piercing scream echoed through the hallways. Shivani furrowed her brows. What kind of looney town is this? She thought.

Whatever, not my problem. With that, the young brunette exited the hospital and headed on her way home.

˚✧₊*⁎⁺˳✧༚

Monday had rolled in and with it, the news of a strawberry blonde sixteen year olds disappearance. The news shook the town, especially since the strawberry blonde in question was Lydia Martin, the bombshell it girl of Beacon Hills. Everyone knew who she was. Well, everyone apart from Shivani. Apparently the girl had disappeared out the hospital late at night and was running around town clothing optional, aka absolutely naked. What a weird town this was proving to be.

Shivani hoped the girl was well, but she doubted it. After all, it was freezing temperatures outside, especially at night, and she had been outdoors since Saturday night. The police were searching all over town for the missing girl, interviewing several people who perhaps had seen her. One of the people being interviewed was a boy working as a graveyard digger. Apparently someone had raided the grave of a somewhat recently deceased woman, and the only thing missing? Her liver.

The Caddel girl didn't really want to believe that she had moved to a town where girls her age ran around naked eating human livers, so she decided to play pretend that the entire thing was just some huge prank being pulled on her. It was her usual go-to excuse when she didn't want to face the reality of something. Like when she was little, she'd always just pretend her parents were playing hide and seek, which was why they were no where to be seen at most hours.

She got into her car. Well, it was actually her mother's car, a black Honda, but it was Shivani's to use whenever it was available. Which was ninety percent of the time, seeing as usually her mom caught a ride with her dad to work.

With a few wrong turns and a whole lot of confusion, Shivani finally made her way into the parking lot to Beacon Hills High, smoothly parking her car. She sighed heavily, checking her apparance in the rear view mirror. They had moved a few times before, and as a results she had attended several different schools. The feeling never got any better. The worst part of moving was definitely the new school. She was only hoping she'd get to class before it started. Maybe then she'd be able to dodge the whole awkward new student introduction.

Her bag was loosely hung over her shoulder as she headed down the hallway of the school. It was swarming with people. Luckily for her, she had already been given her schedule amongst other things to help her off to a good start at school. After locating her locker and swapping the books from there to her bag, she headed off to her first class.

Upon entering the classroom, the first thing she noticed was a somewhat familiar skinny tall boy. It was the same boy she'd seen asleep at the hospital. The buzzcut was a dead give away. She slipped into the seat next to him, letting the conversation between him and some other guy catch her attention.

"She ate the liver?" The other guy, Mr.Buzzcut's friend, said in disgusted. He looked appalled at his friend. Shivani figured they were talking about that girl that had gone missing. Who else would be running around this town eating human livers? She almost gagged at the thought.

Buzzcut scoffed loudly, rolling his eyes. "No, I didn't say she ate it— I just said it was missing." He corrected. Shivani arched a brow. What else would the girl do with the liver? Besides, it did make some sense that she'd eat it if she was hungry enough. "And you know what? Even if she did, so what? It's the most nutritious part of the body." Buzzcut added.

"I never ate anyone's liver. . ." The other one pointed out. Again, Buzzcut rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, right. 'Cause, when it comes to Werewolves, you're a real model of self-control. . ." Mr. Buzzcut shot back. Shivani furrowed her brows. Okay, maybe this town really is crazy. The people here seem to be out of their senses. The girl shook her head, leaning deeper against her chair, watching as the teacher entered the room with a sour look, ready to start the day off with chemistry class. So far there were 'werewolves' and crazed girls running around eating livers. What was next, lizard people? The thought almost made her laugh.

"Everyone please turn your attention over to the board. As you can all probably guess by the stack of papers in my hand, today's a pop quiz." The two sitting beside Shivani quickly shut their mouths, but not before groaning.

"Starting the class on a darker note, police are asking for help on a missing child advisory. It's a sick girl. . . Roaming around." The teacher informed. "So, police are organizing search parties for tonight. Feel free to sign up to these search parties, this girl needs our help."

The two boys next to Shivani shared a knowing look. They needed to find Lydia quickly, before the Argents and preferably before the police. If they found a wolfed out Lydia hunched over a piece of liver. . . Let's just say it wasn't good news at all.

After the quizzes had been handed out to the entire class, Buzzcut boy continued whispering to his friend about whatever. It was really bugging Shivani. This was her first day and she already had to deal with a pop quiz and an annoying guy who wouldn't shut up.

"My gosh, can you shut it?" Shivani snapped at the boy. He threw his head around to look at her in suprise.

"Huh?" He replied, confused. Had he been that loud?

"This is a pop quiz, Mr. Stilinski. If I hear your voice again, I may be tempted to give you detention for the rest of your high school career." The teacher said, stopping at Mr.Buzzcut's, also known as Mr. Stilinski's, desk. The boy gawked at him with wide eyes.

Of course, he couldn't help himself but to continue speaking. "You can do that?"

"There it is again. Your voice— triggering the only impulse I've ever had to strike a student repeatedly and violently. I'll see you at three o'clock for detention." The teacher said. Shivani snorted loudly in amusement. The boy looked absolutely shocked.

She came to regret that quickly. "You too Ms. . . Who are you?"

"Eh, I'm Shivani Caddel. I'm new here." Shivani replied politely, feeling majorly uncomfortable with the several sets of eyes locked on her. She could feel a blush creep onto her cheeks as the embarrassment grew.

"Well then, Ms. Caddel, well done. Your first day, and you've already managed to land yourself detention. I guess I'll see you at three o'clock as well." What an asshole, Shivani thought, internally groaning. He leaned closer. "I would advise you on the heaviest to try getting on my good side again."

Shivani sighed, nodding, turning her attention back to the pop quiz. What a wonderful way to start her first day.

The rest of the school day went by fairly quickly. When the final bell finally rang, she was more then ready to head home. Sadly, she was reminded that she actually had detention. The Stilinski boy had reminded her of that. He had approached her by her locker, awkwardly offering to walk over there togheter. For a moment, Shivani had considered ditching it, but she figured it would just create a bigger mess then she already was in. Reluctantly, she followed him.

"You're new? I'm Stiles." Buzzcut, Stiles, introduced himself. Shivani threw him a small smile, adjusting the bag on her shoulder. It was nice of him to offer walking to detention togheter. She wasn't really used to be approached like that. At her other schools, the principal would simply assign someone to show her around. Apparently Beacon Hills rolled differently. Without a guide, Shivani had been running around like an idiot trying to navigate through the building.

"Uh, yeah. I'm Shivani, nice to meet you, Stiles." His name sounded weird, but Shivani liked saying it. It had a certain. . . Ring to it. "Just moved here last week."

"Hope you're liking Beacon Hills so far. School here is really not too bad. Most of the teachers are nice. Well, other then Mr. Harris that is." Stiles said. Shivani nodded. She appreciated his initiative to show her kindness, but couldn't help but wish he hadn't. Thinking of things to answer was draining.

"Yeah, I guess." Stiles seemed like a nice guy, but Shivani wasn't really interested in making friends with anyone. Especially a guy. Keeping her secret was hard enough as it was already. She didn't need any friends lurking around getting closer to her secret. No one had seen her in all her fishy glory before, and she wasn't about to start showing anyone either. After hiding away all these years, she had grown accustomed to being by her lonesome. Some polite buzzcut teenage boy wasn't about to change that.

The two entered the chemistry classroom. Mr. Harris was already seated at the front, his eyes not leaving the book resting on the desktop infront of him. He looked incredibly snotty with the thin glasses resting on the bridge of his nose and with his hair slicked back. Shivani had decided. He was by far her least favorite teacher. Her favorite teacher? Definitely her PE and economics teacher; Coach Finstock. She'd only had one class with him so far, but his whitty banter and hint of crazy made her like him. He was funny.

"Feel free to take a seat and get comfortable. You'll be here for a while." Shivani rolled her eyes, slipping into a seat next to Stiles.

"How long does this thing last?" She asked, pulling some of the homework for the day onto the desk. Might as well make the best out of the situation and get some work done. Was that a dumb question? The girl second guessed herself. Keeping to herself had made her all the more self conscious when speaking to others. She always found herself overthinking every word she uttered.

Stiles copied her actions, pulling his own books ontop of the desk. "About an hour." Shivani sighed in response. This was going to be one agonizing hour.

As expected, the hour went by painfully slow, but finally it had passed. Just as the clock struck four, Stiles leapt out of his seat, carelessly shoving his stuff into his bag. He had been bouncing his legs nonstop through out the tail end of the hour. and it has been stressing Shivani out. He had sneakily tried to check his phone aswell, but Mr. Harris had busted him and confiscated it.

"Sit." Mr. Harris ordered to the two, barely looking up at them.

"What? But it's been an hour!"

"My detentions are an hour and a half." He responded, a smug look on his face as he watched the two teens slump back down in their seats.

"You can't do that." Stiles argued in defeat.

"Oh, but I can." Shivani really hated Mr. Harris. "You see, Stiles, after your father was so judicious in his dealings with me, I've decided to make you my personal project for the rest of the semester. You are going to benefit from the best discipline I have to offer." Stiles stared at him in disbelief. "Now sit down— before I decide to keep you here all night."

Shivani remained silent. Whatever Stiles had done to make Mr. Harris despise him that much, she wasn't going to make the same mistake. As he himself had said previously that day, getting on his bad side was nothing but a bad idea. The Caddel girl leaned back in her seat, eyes slipping to the clock. Twenty five more minutes to go.

She let her eyes slip close. She almost fell asleep, until Stiles started rustling through his bag, looking for something. Her eyes snapped open. "Do you mind?" Sure, she could be considered shy, but oh boy did she value her quiet time. Stiles, evidently, did not. He was constantly bouncing a knee, or jittering around. It was starting to really get on Shivani's nerves.

Stiles shot her an awkward smile. "Sorry."

"No speaking."

With some more rustling, Stiles pulled his water bottle out of his bag. The sight alone made her skittish. She scooted away from him as she watched Stiles unscrew the bottle, gulping down water hastily. Noticing Shivani staring, he held the bottle out for her. "Want some?"

Quickly she moved away, wide eyes watching drops of water fall on the desk infront of her. "Eh, no thanks."

"Okay then-" Suddenly the bottle slipped out of his hands, flying towards Shivani. Before she had any time to move away, the open bottle poured all over her. Her eyes widened. "I'm so sorry. It was an accident I swear—" Shivani didn't let the Stilinski boy finish his sentence. She flew from her seat, ignoring Mr. Harris calling after her as she stormed out of the classroom.

"Mr. Stilinski get her back here, or you'll both be here all night." Mr. Harris ordered. Stiles nodded, scrambling to his feet after Shivani. He stormed down the hall behind her, watching as she disappeared into the janitors closet. Stiles heard a loud thumb as he reached the door.

"Hey, Shivani, you alright in there? Look I'm really sorry. It was an accident." Stiles said, grabbing the door handle. This was so typical of him. Of course he'd get all clumsy around a pretty girl. Gosh, he needed to get a grip.

"Don't come in!" Shivani ordered in distress, her tail pushed up against the door, keeping it shut. "I'm fine, okay? Just leave me alone for a moment." She held her hand clenched above her tail, steam coming off of it. She needed to get dry, quickly.

Stiles furrowed his brows when his eyes landed on the steam leaking out the crack at the end of the door. "What is that smoke thing coming out of there? What's going on?" Stiles grabbed the door handle once again, flinching. "The door handle literally just burnt me." He spoke out loud, stunned.

Just as Stiles was about to try opening the door again, it flew open. A completely dry Shivani stepped out, forcing a smile at him. "Guess detentions over now, right?"

She brushed past a very confused Stiles. "How are you completely dry?"

"Stiles is it?" He nodded. "I'll guess I'll see you around then. Bye!" With that the brunette disappeared from view, slipping into the classroom to gather her stuff before heading home.

This had been one long day. And that had been a close call. One day in this place, and she had already come this close to revealing her secret. Something was telling her that Beacon Hills wasn't like the other places she had lived, and for here on out, she was going to have to be extra careful. . .
