Prologue
1800.
A princess born to the King and Queen of the Fire Realm. Glorious for all; all except the Queen herself. From the moment she was told a daughter would be born to her, your mother had lost interest, no love nested in her heart. She had always wanted a son. Sons ruled strong kingdom's and lead militia for the world to fear. Not pathetic Princesses who would have to marry for power.
Therefore she discarded the child immediately to the midwifery, ignoring it's existence completely. Nonetheless, the King adored the baby in his arms that night and had promised he would raise a woman of reckoning. No nation would uproot the future Queen.
1803.
The King held a meeting with the monks of Cave Azula as he did every fortnight. You sat at the cave's edge with a meditating Guru. He didn't pay much attention to you nor did you pay attention to him. The rattle in your hand was far more engaging.
Each gathering of Azula, the monk's would relay their visions. The first monk spoke of the abundant crop of this year and merciful rains that would soon shower every corner of the country. The second monk warned of Air Realm activity. Sails seen close to the Water Realm border. The third monk who came forward wore a more complex expression, gaining the King's attention more than the others.
"My King. Before you came, I had a vision that has troubled me most, therefore, I would propose to address the council with your blessing."
The King stroked his small plaited beard and nodded, "please, let us all hear what you have to say."
"My vision took place in the Raion Jungle. There were no animals but four. A prime bull, broad and sturdy, dark brown in furr. An eagle of pure white, it's wings at least a span of 14 feet. A dolphin with a crystal blue outer, fins and nose sharp. In the centre of all of them stood the mighty dragon, red scales and hazel eyes. They moved together in one formation. The last of my vision is when the dragon roars and emits a mighty blue flame."
Those seated at the round table mumbled and the King stirred in his seat. "What does this mean?"
"In my most reliable knowledge, I would say the bull is a symbol of Earth, the eagle of Air, the dolphin of Water and the dragon, Fire, Your Majesty."
"They illustrate the four Realms you mean?" The King was now intrigued for he had not heard such a strange vision before. "But blue fire is strange."
The monk could not decipher the rest and apologised when all of a sudden a child's cry echoed down the cave. A minute later, you were brought to the King, tears falling as you had scratched your knee after a small tumble on a rough rock.
"Was no one watching the child?" the King demanded as he stepped towards his daughter. You cried and clenched your small fists when a puff of smoke arose and blue sparks ignited from your knuckles. You stopped crying and stared at your hands with glossy eyes; your father and the monks stood still, speechless.
"I think I could shed light on the vision now, Your Highness," the monk from earlier stepped forward and held his hand out for you to grab- which you did and took a few waddling steps with his guidance.
"I think this was not a vision but an insight to the prophecy."
Many murmurs took over the cave and it seemed all attendees had an understanding.
"A man shall come forth who will unite all the nations. His signature will be that of the blue spirit for all to know who he is," and then he glanced down at you, playing with the rattle once more, "but I think the man is not a man, and is rather a woman. A princess in fact."
The King lifted you in his arms and swallowed all this newfound information.
"Will harm come to her?" he asked with worry and a stern face. You gurgled and clung to your father's vest.
"Indeed it will. However, she has the will and the power to fight through all coming hardships. Her destiny has been brought to light, Your Highness."
Your father let out a sigh.
"Her destiny she will take charge but for now, I wish of no one to learn of this secret. I shall consult my wife and until then we speak not of our findings." Then he left the cave.
It was safe to say the Queen after hearing of the prophecy was in denial and enraged.
"A Queen who can firebend? This has never happened before and I will not be the first to expose such ridiculousness upon our history. The child is different enough. Let it be forbidden for her to practice or I myself shall give the news to our sensitive people!"
The King took heed of his wife's words and did not retort because he knew the evil witch would take action immediately and find a way to have you killed or removed. She was heartless and he knew it- if the nation knew, there would only be chaos and uproar for not everyone was a supporter of the unification of all the realms.
1806.
The child minder had ran off into the greenhouse, ordering red roses for the Queen's dinner table this evening.
You sat outside in the garden, curious of a small critter hiding inside an old oak tree.
"Come out little fellow, I wish not to hurt you!"
The creature stared back at you with yellow glowing eyes the size of cricket balls. Reluctantly, it crawled out of it's small hole and you laid eyes on what you had learnt to be a rare animal; a Flying Shepherd puppy.
You squeaked with excitement and picked the creature up carefully, "I'm going to name you Yujin." With a bounce in your step, you ran quickly to your father in order to show him your new friend.
"Father look!" you barged into the throne room.
"Splendid. She brought a rodent into the throne room. I shall leave now." The Queen spat and strode away much to your happiness.
"What do you have there, darling?" The King leaned forward, resting his elbows on the arms of his luxurious throne.
"I read of a creature that grows to be gargantuan and can fly to all ends of the Earth if fed enough," you smiled and stroked Yujin in your arms, "I called him Yujin. He's a Flying Shepherd."
"Ah, he must have ran away from the barn," you put Yujin down so he could pace around the grand room freely, "but I am afraid you will have to return him to the keeper so they can be taken to other homes."
You startled and shook your head, "no no no!"
"You can't keep it in the castle."
Water gathered in your eyes and your hands waved in the air as you began your tantrum, when out of nowhere blue shots flew out of your hands and burnt the parchments on the table in front of you. You froze on the spot and looked daringly at your father. He blinked thrice before stepping down and putting out the dead flames.
"Father, what just happened?"
He frowned and handed the animal back to you, "you may keep him." Then he turned his back and was about to leave but you pulled on the entrails of his robe.
"Why are you ignoring me, Your Highness?" A skill you had picked up to gain your father's attention was to address him formally. He didn't like it at all as it felt like you were distancing yourself from him.
"Y/N..." he warned and faced you again, this time kneeling down on one knee, "let us not speak of this."
"Fire came out of my hands! How could I not say anything?"
"I will not tell you anymore."
"The feeling was amazing! I felt the surge in my bones. Am I magic?" you asked, blissful to the King's serious tone.
He sighed and watched your expression of marvel.
"Come with me," he ordered quietly.
That day, you had been introduced to a master Ablazier- the firebenders. His name was Gin Wei and he would teach you in secret all there was to know of the art and make you a powerful Queen. For years that is what you did instead of learning how to waltz in the ballroom or what each fork's purpose was in the banquet hall- you didn't care for the etiquettes. Unfortunately you still had to learn them yet your eagerness lay in being a formidable Ablazier.
1818. Today.
It was nightfall, almost dawn by now. You sat peacefully wrapped up in multiple blankets on the armchair in front of the crackling fireplace. A book nestled in your fingers and your bottom lip prisoner to your top teeth. Tonight's book was on the Water Realm.
It was forbidden to wander the castle at night because of the dangers it held and of course, a princess needs her sleep. However you weren't interested in sleeping when there was more to understand of the world. Your fascination grew greedily with every book you read. It was eye opening to know of tradition and the culture of other people.
Not that your people would empathise. The Fire Nation's citizens were rigid and over emotional. They disliked other nations for their differences and past wars. You sighed as the thought entered your mind and you could imagine the scowl on your mother's face.
Boom.
An explosion interrupted your thoughts as you were thrown to the ground, almost into the fireplace- luckily you stopped a few centimetres in front of it. Your chair had collided to the ground, revealing a raging fire that was running along the other side of the library, rapidly making its way over to you. Book case after book case enveloped in fiery flames and books flew around the room. Thick, black smoke gathered at the ceiling and was choking you as the soot got stuck in your throat. You coughed repeatedly and used your arms to pull yourself further away.
After much struggle, you wafted your hands in the air to move the smoke and got back up onto your feet. You could see a gaping hole in the castle wall.
Not only had Gin Wei taught you how to emit fire, but also how it could be controlled or more importantly in this instance, absorbed. You sank into a horse stance and held out your fingers straight and firm. With slow swaying of your arms, you were able to guide the thick clouds of smoke out of the large hole and clear the air in the room. It took focus as smoke wasn't exactly fire.
Next on your agenda was dealing with the fire. Most of your beloved library had now been destroyed and burnt to nothing. There was no way of saving all the books but you could get out alive. You stood tall and held out both hands in front of you. Taking a deep breath in, you moved your right hand back, and then your left hand in alternating motions until every ember was assembled into a ball of red and yellow. You clicked your fingers away as smaller balls were dispersed into gas and released into the air until there was nothing left.
You fell back onto your buttocks and yelled angrily, your eyes searching the immediate area with sadness. How could your one place of freedom become nothing in a blink of an eye. You dropped your sight to the ground and thoughtlessly lifted a burnt corner of parchment. Your eyes scanned the page and you stuffed it into your dirtied night robe.
Guards marched into the crumbling room and helped you out.
Initially, you thought there would be a statement given personally by the King in the throne room to all the Colonel and East Wing residents. You were wrong. Instead your father had told you to follow him. You both walked down the hallway and stopped at a painting. No one else was around and your father pulled at the frame until a door became visible. He allowed you through first. You walked down a spiralling staircase deep underground and at the bottom a guard met you, holding out a clean robe to wear over your mucky gown and a wet towel to wipe your blackened face.
"Thank you," you nodded and walked towards the wooden table in the centre of the strange basement. Your eyes caught sight of the setting, ornate dishes and vintage ottoman rugs scattered around. It wasn't difficult to realise this was a secret chamber for the King. Conspiracies anyone?
"Gosh." You rolled your eyes at the hag already at her place around the table, sipping from a gold-plated goblet.
"Could you be any more imperious or vile?" You muttered under your breath, fully aware she could hear every word. Your mother scowled and your father ignored any small talk.
"No dilly-dallying women. A rebel attack has just taken place and our East Wing is wholly destroyed at the Library." His face portrayed frustration and angst. No wonder they had forgotten to enquire why you were not in your own quarters at sleeping hours.
"Rebels?" you asked naively and merited a cackle from the Queen. "The little one knows nothing of royal affairs because all she does is play. Of course there are rebels!"
"Are you okay?" your father consulted you and you nodded, "I am fine." "I shall find whoever did this and make them pay dearly."
"How is she still alive? And always in the wrong place at the wrong time I must point out."
"I wouldn't be surprised if it were you who ordered the attack!" You informed her of your honest opinion and she only smiled into her goblet.
"A mighty accusation. Many must want you dead."
You bit your lips.
Don't bite into her provocations.
"Do not quarrel. We are in a time of imminent danger and we must think of the future of our nation. My daughter, I dread that a number of individuals have discovered of your ability."
"How could that be?" you asked confused.
"Indeed. There is no way." The first time maybe ever your mother had agreed on something with you. You gave a side glance in her direction only to be met with cold eyes.
"We might have a traitor in the castle, who knows? It doesn't matter. I have a plan." The King was confident that the Queen had not anything to do with this plot of treason for even she had too much to lose if the heir of the throne was assassinated.
"Please share..." the Queen sarcastically responded. The tone of her unpleasant voice made your blood boil and it took every ounce of self control not to set her alight on the spot.
You provided a trustful smile of support.
"Y/N, you must offer your hand in marriage to the Crown Prince of the Water Realm."
Your jaw dropped and the woman beside you gripped the table, her nails digging as strongly as they could into the wood.
"How could our next course of action become the laughing stock of the world?" she spat, "there is no way this would work and we would look weak to every nation."
You hated to admit it but something so unique could only ever be mocked. No realm had ever allied before as the four sects were all too different in their ways, regardless of their powers.
"Father, I am not sure... I don't want to get married! I am only 18 and I am not the most knowledgeable in political circumstances."
He leant over and placed his hand over yours, "no child, you are the smartest person in the nation with the number of books you have read. You need not squander space in your brain for such miniscule matters."
"How can we be sure they do not deny me then?" you asked further, not fully convinced. It clicked in your mind that if you were successful in this endeavour, you would travel so far and experience new culture first hand instead of by the means of paper. Deep inside, a new expectation within yourself had kindled.
"I shall make you Queen."
It felt as though the air in your chest cavity had been knocked out of you and your mind went blank. Speechless, you only ogled at the King.
"You will do no such thing!" Your mother barked after sanity returned into her being. The heaviness of his words had caused such a shock, she had lost consciousness for a second.
"I am the King and I will do whatever I see fit!"
"Father, I- I cannot be trusted with such stature. It is too soon, I am scared I may fail you..." you whispered the last few words. There were only a rare few instances where you had felt overwhelmed in all of your existence and this moment in time had to be the most overwhelming moment in your entire lifetime.
"I believe in you. You will go to the Water nation, offer your hand and such an offer is impossible to reject. Then with their protection you will be safe and in exchange we shall ally in future movement." His eyes were glossed and you knew that it hurt your father to send you away. It hurt you more to leave him behind with the crony who loved no one but herself.
"This decision is preposterous and the girl is ignorant. I bet she has been practicing her witchery privately which is why she has been caught. I have always warned a daughter to the monarchy is weak and our only source of power will be from marriage and now our kingdom will be sold. I shall tell the people-"
"You utter a word to anyone and I shall see to your head being dismembered! She has practiced indeed under my decree for no one will rule over my kingdom but my child!"
Queen Suki wavered and a guard escorted her out of the chamber.
Such harsh words coming from your father felt foreign however, seeing them stand up to your mother delighted you beyond words.
You leapt into your father's arms and made your resolve; "I shall ride on the morrow if my father so wills. For the future of my country, I shall succeed."
Your father wrapped his arms around you and smiled weakly, "you will do great things, little one."
"I only ask for one favour..."
"What is it?"
You pulled away and looked into their eyes, "allow me one day of freedom to do as I please."
