CHAPTER TWENTY - KILL OF THE NIGHT

"I'm like a shooting star, I've come so far, I can't go back to where I used to be."

CHAPTER TWENTY — KILL OF THE NIGHT

"Who the hell is Harold Jenkins?" Diego repeated, glaring at the paper in Allison's hands.

"No idea," I shrugged. "Where's Vanya?"

"Irrelevant," Allison muttered.

Five tossed the coffee cup aside. "We don't know, yet. But we do know that he's responsible for the apocalypse."

"So we have to find him, and we have to do it now," I said.

Luther frowned. "How is he connected to what's gonna happen?"

"I don't know," Five replied.

"Wait, so you just know his name?" Diego's face scrunched together. "That's it?"

"That's enough," Five shot back.

Diego stared at him. "There's probably dozens of Jenkinses in the city."

"Well, we better start looking, then."

I looked out the window as thunder rolled outside.

"I'm sorry. Am I the only one that's skeptical here? I mean, how exactly do you know all of this about what's his name?" Allison blurted out.

"Harold Jenkins. You know the lunatics in masks who attacked the house?" I snapped at my sister.

"Oh yeah, I think I remember those guys," Klaus scratched the back of his neck.

"Yeah, the ones that attacked us while you were getting drunk," Diego looked at the two of us.

"Yeah. Them," I rolled my eyes at Diego.

"They were sent by the Temps Commission to stop us from coming back and preventing the end of life on Earth," Five said.

"The Temps what?"

Five clenched his jaw. "Our former employer. They monitor all of time and space to make sure that whatever is supposed to happen, happens. They believe the apocalypse is coming in three days."

"So we went to Commission headquarters and intercepted a message that was meant for said lunatics," I continued for him, Five smirked slightly.

"'Protect Harold Jenkins'," he looked at me. "So, he must be responsible for the apocalypse."

The others stood there in silence as they thought over our words.

Diego scrunched up his face even more.

Allison looked blankly at us.

Luther blinked and jutted out his tongue in confusion.

"What do you mean, protect time and space?"

"Where is this Hazel, Five?"

The three of them launched into questions immediately.

I rubbed a hand along my face, taking a quick look at Klaus as he muttered to himself. "My skin is on fire."

"Do you have any idea how insane this sounds?"

"You know what else is insane?" Five yelled over the commotion, his hand flitting over his blazer slightly. "I look like a 16-year-old boy. Klaus talks to the dead, and Luther thinks he's fooling everybody with that overcoat. Everything about is insane. It always has been."

"He's got a point there," Klaus drawled.

"We didn't choose this life, we're just living it."

I almost sighed. "For the next three days, anyway."

"But the last time we tried to stop it, we all died," Allison retorted in a matter-of-fact way. "Why is this time any different? Why shouldn't I go home to my daughter?"

"Because this time, we're here. We have the name of the man responsible. Guys, we actually have the chance of saving the lives of billions of people," Five said.

"Including Claire," I added.

"You know her name?" Allison looked at me funny.

"I do, and we'd like to live long enough to meet her," I stared back at her.

"All right," Allison crossed her arms over her chest protectively. "Let's get this bastard."

"You had me at Gerald Jenkins," Diego nodded towards us.

"Harold Jenkins," I quirked a small smile at him.

"Whatever. I've already lost two people this week, I'm not losing anyone else," Diego bowed his head.

"And Luther?" Five asked hopefully.

"Yeah, you guys go. I'm gonna stay and go through Dad's files," he replied. "I still think this has something to do with why he sent me to the Moon."

Why is he still so naive?

Diego took the words out of my mouth, "Seriously? Now you wanna make the end of the world about you and Dad?"

"No. "Watch for threats." That's what he told me," Luther glared at Diego. "You think that's a coincidence? This all has to be connected somehow."

"No, we should all stick together," Allison placed a hand on Luther's arm.

I cringed, whispering to Five. "Is that thing still going on?"

"We don't have time for this," Five raised his voice at the two of them.

"Let's roll. I know where we can find this asshole. Klaus, you're with me," Diego gestured at Klaus to follow him.

"Yeah. I-I'm good," Klaus slurred drunkenly. "I think I-I'll uh I think I'll pass, feeling a little under the weather, so, uh, yeah." He groaned as he walked out of the living room.

I sighed. "Come on, let's bounce. I can drive."

"No, you do not get to touch any part of the driver's seat," Diego glared at me playfully.

I pouted, "Fine."
