CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE — BURN IT UP
"A bowling alley," I pursed my lips. "Well, there are worse places to meet."
"Look, I hate to be the one to say this, but everyone needs to prepare," Luther said, his arm flung lazily over the seat beside him.
"For what?" Diego glared, his brows knitted together in a frown.
"To do whatever it takes to stop Vanya," Luther replied.
Allison smacked her notepad against Luther's arm.
"For once, I'm actually agreeing with Moon boy here," I drummed my fingers on Five's knee, playing with the shadows that emerged from my fingertips.
"We may not have a choice, Allison," Luther defended.
"Bullshit," Diego said darkly. "There's always options."
"Yeah, like what?" Five asked.
"I don't know," Diego looked down.
"Look, whatever we decide, we need to find Vanya." Frustration laced into Luther's voice. "And fast, okay? She could be anywhere."
"Or here," Klaus had been reading the newspaper. He adjusted it and spread it out. "Look at this."
We all crowded around him, finding a print of Vanya's picture alongside an advertisement of the St. Pluvium chamber orchestra.
"That's right, her concert is tonight," Diego spoke up.
"Hello," a voice came from behind us. I turned to see a uniformed employee of the bowling alley approach us. "I hate to intrude, but my manager says if you're not gonna bowl, you gotta leave."
"Who's turn is it?" Diego teased.
"Oh for-" Luther rolled his eyes, grabbed a bowling ball in front of him and tossed it into the alleys without even looking.
I raised my eyebrows and nodded my approval as the ball jumped two alleys across and still managed to knock all the pins down.
Allison held up her notepad and tapped it for attention. "She's our sister" was scrawled across in capital letters.
"We're the only ones capable of stopping this," Luther shook his head. "We have a responsibility to Dad."
"To Dad? No, I've heard enough about-" Diego managed a deadpan expression.
"He sacrificed everything to bring us back together," Luther sneered.
"I'm with Luther on this one," Five leaned forward from his seat. "We can't give her a chance to fight back."
Klaus looked behind us with wide eyes. I whipped my head around to find nothing again before narrowing my eyes at Klaus. Am I hallucinating or is he still high?
"There are billions of lives at stake. We're past trying to save just one," Five continued.
"Hey, you know, guys, uh, maybe I could help," Klaus spoke up hesitantly.
"Now is not the time," Luther held back an obvious groan.
"No, let him finish," Diego waved his hand dismissively at Number One.
Luther couldn't mask the surprise on his face.
"He saved my life today," Diego added.
"Is that true?" Luther shrugged.
"Yeah, yeah, I did-" Klaus nodded, pursing his lips. "-take credit for it."
He sighed, "In fact, the real hero was Ben."
Luther narrowed his eyes, gaping at Klaus.
Five shifted in his seat and leaned back, obviously fed up.
"Today-Listen," Klaus clenched his jaw. "Today, he punched me in the face! And earlier at the house, he was the one who saved Diego's life, not me!"
Oh my God. "I can kind of vouch for him, with the saving Diego thing," I spoke, shrinking into my seat as Luther shot me a harsh glare.
"Not you too, Zero," Luther shook his head. "You are both unbelievable!"
"You want proof, is that it?" Klaus stated. "All right, I-I'll give you proof."
He sniffled, picking up a bowling ball and looking behind me again, "All right, it's showtime, baby."
He tossed it up and I ducked, the ball bouncing harmlessly on to the ground behind me.
Klaus grabbed the back of his head and pouted. Diego looked like he had been betrayed.
"Is there any way to silence that voice in your head that screams to be the center of attention?" Luther spat.
"You know, I liked you a lot better before you got laid," Klaus retorted.
"Allison's here, Klaus!" I jerked my head to our sister.
Luther's eyes widened and I bit my lip. Shit is going down.
There was a pause.
"Which was a complete-It wasn't his fault, 'cause he was ridiculously high, right?" Klaus attempted to explain. "And-And the girl, she thought he was a furry..."
Allison screwed up her face, looking like she was about to explode.
"Stop!" Luther's face was crimson with fury.
Klaus raked a hand through his hair, "Okay."
"He popped his cherry," I let out a low whistle, adding salt on the wound.
Luther glanced at Allison slowly, who slammed her hand on a nearby table and walked away. "Allison, wait," Luther followed her closely.
"Excuse me!" A lady in glasses came over with a nerdy-looking boy. "Excuse me, it's my son Kennys birthday, and, uh, wouldn't your son be happier playing with kids his own age?"
I bit my lip, choking back a laugh as I nudged Five. "Baby, you wanna go play?"
"Assuming it's okay with your two dads," the lady added with a brilliant smile.
Klaus and Diego looked at her like she grew a second head, exchanging a glance with each other and ignored her.
There was a moment of silence and Five leaned forward, a sneer on his face as he replied, "I would rather chew off my own foot."
A familiar whoosh came from the ball return and a sharp clunk sounded.
"Let's go, Kenny," The woman led her son away from us.
Five stood up, and I was about to follow until he waved me to stay. I watched as he approached the machine and yanked a familiar metal tube out.
"If I was going to date a man, you'd be the last man I would date," Diego said to Klaus.
"You'd be lucky to get me," Klaus replied.
Five held a piece of paper in his hand as he walked back over to me, his eyes never leaving the small note.
"How did she find you?" I asked, resting my head on my palms, leaning on my legs.
"Tracker in candy wrapping," Five replied.
He swooped down to kiss the top of my head quickly. "I'll be back soon."
"Okay," I smiled. "Stay safe!"
