CHAPTER SIXTEEN — THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

"An ice cream truck? Out of all the cars and trucks you can pick at a parking lot this big you go for the bloody ice cream truck!" I growled at Diego as the three of us huddled together behind the vehicle in Diego's car.

Diego swiftly headed out of the car, ignoring my question and approached Hazel's blue car.

"Idiot," Klaus grinned lopsidedly as Diego narrowed his eyes at us from outside, leaned down, slapped a tracker underneath Hazel's blue car, and connected it to his router.

He quickly jogged back to us and hopped back into the driver's seat.

I eyed the motel cautiously as Hazel and Cha-Cha peek through their curtains.

"Bingo," Diego grinned.

"You do know that killing these people is not gonna make you feel any better," Klaus commented before taking another chug of his liquor.

"Yeah, but when it's done, I'm gonna sleep like a baby," he replied.

"Sure, you will," Klaus muttered.

We watched as a motel clerk walked up to their room with a paper in hand.

Not a few moments later, Hazel walked out of the room with an ice bucket in his hand.

"Stay in the car," Diego said, eyeing Hazel from afar.

"What are you talking about this guy tortured me!" Klaus scoffed.

"It's a trap," I replied.

"I have a plan," Diego shot back before getting out of the car.

I sighed and got out of the car once he turned into the motel staircase.

"Com'on Klaus, let's go," I waved my brother out of the car and followed Diego.

"So what exactly is the plan here, big guy?" Klaus asked as we reached the top of the stairs.

"I told you to wait in the car," Diego didn't bother to look at us.

"Yeah, but you also told me that licking a nine-volt battery would give me pubes," Klaus replied, taking another swing from his bottle.

Diego rolled his eyes, "We were eight."

"I'm not going to start on the things you said to me," I sighed at Diego.

Klaus shrugged, burping as he pushed past us.

Diego pulled him back.

"What? Come one," Klaus groaned.

"For once, I need you to listen to me, okay?" Diego dragged him down the stairs. "Now, go back to the car. If I don't come out in two minutes, that means I'm probably dead."

Klaus skidded to a stop at the foot of the stairway. "So-"

"That happens, go get help, okay?" Diego clutched Klaus' shoulders.

Klaus sighed and nodded. "Yeah, okay, okay, okay, okay."

"I'm coming with you," I crossed my arms at Diego.

"No, you're not," he glared at me, gesturing me to follow Klaus.

"This is a trap and I know these people, I used to work with them," I grabbed a gun from its holster and loaded it quickly. "I'm coming whether you like it or not."

Diego sighed and flicked his wrist as he clutched his knife tightly.

I positioned myself at the top of the staircase and cocked my gun to the side as Diego kicked open the door.

An engine revved down at the parking lot and I frowned as I watched the blue car peel out of their parking spot.

"Diego, get down!" I shouted, crouching down quickly and start reaching for the shadows at the sides, creating tendrils and throwing at the car.

Cha-Cha was leaning out the window as she pointed her gun at us and fired.

Diego yelled as he was shot and Klaus pulled him back.

"Shit," I cursed as Diego groaned from behind, grabbing my brothers and hurrying to the stairs.

Their tires screech and I ran over to the other side, grabbing Diego's only pistol and shooting Cha-cha twice at her arm. I could hear her shriek as they drove out of the motel.

"Oh, man. See? You used to think I was an idiot," Klaus told Diego.

"I still think you're an idiot," Diego panted, clutching his wounded arm.

"They're getting away," I said, already running down the stairs.

"Let's go," Diego followed suit.

"You're welcome," Klaus rolled his eyes before running after us.

I groaned immediately when I spotted the deflated tires of Diego's car.

"Shit," Klaus sighed.

"Get in the car. Oh-" Diego trailed off.

Klaus kicked the tire frustratedly.

"Was this all part of your master plan?" Klaus mocked.

"Shut up," Diego retorted.

I approached the ice cream truck, creating a solid tendril of shadow and taking Diego's dagger, wedging the top part of the side door open.

I stuck the tendril into the opening and unlocked the vehicle, yanking open the door and looked over to my siblings. "Let's go!"

Klaus grinned as he went over to the driver side of the truck and pulled the unlocked door open.

I watched as Diego gaped before shaking his head and hopped into the other side.

I plopped down on the seat as Klaus revved the engine to the ice cream truck.

"When did you learn to steal cars?" Diego asked.

"I learnt a lot of stuff that you don't need to know," I replied. "Can we go now?"
