The First Time I Talked to You

Izzie Stewart is so goddamn beautiful. My eyes, her smile, the way her hair bounces when she walks. So of course, she makes me a nervous wreck. And right now, I was walking into the building. Fast. Hoping to avoid Izzie and all the other students passing me weird stares. "So this is what it feels like to be the new kid..." I muttered to myself. I took my time to walk to the principal's office because I knew that once I met him I would officially be part of this school and no longer part of Newton. Also because I wanted to take in how the building looked. It was crazy humungous with corridors everywhere. How does one not get lost?

The moment I pushed through the doors a gush of cold air hit my face. "Casey Gardner I suppose?" The lady at the front desk asked. She had short hair and purple glasses and a button down shirt with flower prints on them. I nodded nervously, gripping my bag strap. She started tapping away on her laptop without continuing so I just stood there awkwardly. "Principal Jeffers will see you in 5 minutes. He's currently with a client. Don't be too tense it's only your first day. Have a sweet," She said, pointing at the bowl of sweets on the desk, never once looking up at me. I took a sweet, just to not be rude, but there was no way this sweet was going to calm any of my nerves. Everything was so fast-paced here and I hated it. Maybe this was the wrong decision.

"Casey Gardner," A deep male voice spoke and I looked up to see Principal Jeffers. He isn't what I expected at all. I figured he would have a checkered shirt and brown pants and maybe some dressing shoes. But this man just wore a plain black t-shirt, jeans and sports shoes. And if you ask me, he was quite handsome. I walked into his office and saw pictures of his kids and wife I presume and some of him during his graduation days. He seemed to be an ex-student here.

"Alright Casey I'm going to give you your schedule with all your classes. Looking at your grades from your last school, I think we can put you in AP Biology," He said. "AP? Trust me I'm not an AP student," I said, and then immediately regretted it. Probably not the best thing to tell your principal on the first day. "You'll get used to it," He simply said, as he continued typing on the laptop. "Coach Crowley was really eyeing you after your big win that day," He said and I just nodded. "Good luck Casey. Not that you need any." He gave me my schedule and I looked at it for a while, and sighed seeing that lessons ended most days at 5. I simply smiled and walked out of his office. It was hard to fake that I was really excited because I was not. It was all getting so real right now. "Oh God Newton I miss you," I silently said under my breath.

I walked to locker 264 and was happy to see that there were not many students in the corridor. Just a red-headed boy sitting on the floor to study and a girl at the water fountain. Back at Newton, we didn't even have locks for our lockers. Ironic huh? The school could never afford them. I looked at the combination printed on my schedule and tried to unlock my locker but to no avail. "How do these damn things even work?"

"Need help?" A sweet clarion voice spoke and I turned around. My breath hitched and my hands got clammy when I saw Izzie standing in front of me. Since I was little, my hands would always start sweating the moment I got nervous and I wouldn't be able to mutter a word. That's why I was never great at public speaking and have been single my whole life. "Um... yeah.... yeah... I just... I'm new here so I don't know how to-"

"Yeah I know. Casey right?" She cut me off and I nodded. She knows my name? "I saw you run. You were great," She said, taking my schedule. "So you just gotta turn this thing like that... and then like that... sometimes it doesn't work so you just give the door a little nudge and... there you go!" She said proudly, opening my locker door. "Th-thanks!" I said. Goddamnit Casey keep it together. "My locker is next to yours so just ask me if you need any locker help in the future," She laughed. Wow I could hear her talk for hours. "Um Izzie, where's the class for World Studies?" I asked without any stammers, surprising myself. "Oh World Studies is just straight down the hall and turn left, first class to your right. I'll see you at training later?"

    "Oh yeah! Most definitely!"

    "See ya Newton."

    Newton?

I entered the class and walked straight to an empty seat at the back. No one seemed to acknowledge me which was great. The rest of the day was just me going to my new classes and having to introduce myself, and learn new concepts that were completely alien to me. But what I was dreading the most was training. If those girls don't like me then I'm completely screwed for the rest of the school year. I dragged my feet to the track which was huge by the way. At least twice the size of Newton's.

I set my duffel bag down on the bench and looked up to see the team stretching. "Um... Hi," I cleared my throat and they all looked up. "Guys! It's Gardner!" A girl yelled out to the other girls and everyone ran towards me. "So you're the new kid? How was school today?" A girl asked. "Oh... it was fine I guess... just same old same old. Ms Bowman talks like a record player though." I tried cracking a joke, in hopes that they would not see what a nervous wreck I was. Thankfully, they erupted into laughter and a smile was plastered on my face. "Oops sorry captain, we were just talking to the newbie here," She said, looking behind me. I turned around to see Izzie and I gulped. "We've met. I helped her with her locker this morning."

Training was bearable. Coach Crowley meant serious business but she didn't give us too much to do that day. We all gathered at the benches to cool down when Quinn started talking. "Shall we all head to Maison's today?" I looked at everyone in confusion. "Maison's Coffee is Izzie's family cafe business," Quinn explained. Izzie? Owning a cafe? I never would have thought. "We usually bring all the new members of the team to the cafe for an officiation. It's like a mini party."

"Yeah well last time when we had an officiation Izzie brought her stupid boyfriend Nate!" Another girl exclaimed, nudging Izzie. "I'm sorry ok! He was bored and I felt bad rejecting him. But I promise today is girls only. You in?" Izzie asked, handing me a water bottle. At this point, my mind was in a blur. She has a boyfriend. I hate him already.

"Oh what? Yeah, yeah let's do it," I said, taking the bottle. We all got into Quinn's Porsche. Half the kids here own fancy cars and I'm not surprised. Just the seat belt probably costs more than my entire house. I was really quiet the entire ride partly because I didn't know what to say and just joined in the conversation here and there but mostly because I was angry about Izzie being taken. Seriously what is wrong with me? I haven't even met the guy and I already hate him.

Maison's was a tiny cafe at the corner of the street and it was dimly lighted up. It had a small painted sign and a few plants on the outside. It was comforting. It was closed for the night but Izzie unlocked the doors with her keys and turned on the lights. There was a lower and higher platform of tables. The counter also had a display case which I'm guessing is for the cakes and the blackboard behind showed all the different drinks they sold. "Like it Newton?" I turned around to see Izzie standing next to me, her eyes glimmering. She is so cute...

"It's really nice Izzie," I said, smiling at her and then looking down because I felt my cheeks already burning up. Quinn returned with two bottles of vodka from the kitchen and raised them up high. Everyone cheered and Izzie laughed as she dragged me towards the group. "If my dad finds out about this he's going to kill us," Izzie warned. "We've done this so many times and he didn't suspect a thing!"

Quinn poured the vodka into coffee mugs for each of us. I loved how comfortable I was with the entire group on the very first day itself. They weren't what I expected. They weren't snobbish and uptight and they took life with a pinch of salt. I loved it.

    "To Casey!' Izzie said.

    "To Casey!"

    I felt at home.

"No way!" Izzie laughed, taking another sip from her mug. "It's true! The police had to come to our school. It was crazy. At least we got to miss lessons!" We had all sat in a circle and started to talk and they had asked me about life in Newton. Right now I was telling them about the crazy fight that happened in the science lab last year. "Your life seems crazy Newton," Izzie said, staring into my eyes. I felt my heart drop as I saw her bite her lip so I returned to my mug of vodka. "You know Casey, we're seriously blessed to have you in our team. You were insanely fast when we saw you," Jessica said, clinking her mug with mine. We were all slightly tipsy at this point and I decided to stop before I got too crazy. "We're all to drunk to go home tonight. Let's just sleepover. My house is right across Casey," Izzie said. I looked out of the cafe and saw the house she was pointing to.

My heart was racing crazy fast. Like really crazy fast. Even faster than during track. Sleepover at Izzie Stewart's house? This day couldn't get better... or worse

Obviously I agreed because she was right- there was no way I would be able to get home tonight. I texted Elsa that I was staying over at a friend's and we all went together to the house.

Izzie's house. That one I remember so clearly. I was insanely shocked when I entered because it didn't look like a rich man's house. It kinda looked like mine. Average, simple and liveable. So Izzie isn't one of the rich girls? "Welcome to my humble abode" She said opening her bedroom door. Strange that she was the only one here. Where were here parents? Is she an only child?

"Y'all I'm out," Quinn said, plopping on the bed and everyone followed suit. Izzie and I were the only ones awake. "Suddenly I'm wide awake," Izzie said and I laughed nervously.

I caught her staring at me. "You know you're really one of a kind Newton."

"You're really one of a kind too Izzie."

The next thing I know, she was yawning and I figured it was time for us to go to bed. Unfortunately, the rest of the team was knocked out on Izzie's bed. We looked at each other and laughed. Izzie and I decided to go downstairs to the couch. There was space for two people so we slept across from each other. A little too far than what I wanted but beggars can't be choosers.

    "Goodnight Newton."

    "Goodnight Izzie."

I am in love with this girl.
