Astora Chapter 8: War Amongst the Snow (Shikon)

I glanced back as Sora followed closely behind. "So you've decided to pursue?" I asked, scoffing.

Sora smiled and threw a snowball at me.

I quickly hit the snow and rolled around as he continued to attack me. I grabbed a clump of snow as I rolled then threw it, nearly hitting his left arm.

I quickly got up and ran toward our castle, carefully avoiding the incoming snowballs. Shion's siblings aimed at me from nearby as well.

"Three versus one is unfair," I said, chuckling. I clapped my hands, causing the snowballs to plummet before they could reach me.

"Gravity, huh," Shion said, rushing over. When did she begin following me? Wait if she's here, then who was guarding her castle?

I was about to repel her attack when she drew the snow up with her own hands.

"You've awakened," I said, eyes wide.

"I have," she said, hitting me with a small wave of snow.

"How? When?" I asked.

She smirked. "I noticed my siblings move the snow a bit earlier. That gave me the idea to copy them. Also, I've seen my other brother do it years ago too. It was all a matter of piecing together how they did it." She stared at her hands. "A strange cold energy."

I smiled. "Still, you're really something to have been able to do that from observation alone. Your siblings had to be pushed a bit for them to activate theirs. That cold energy you feel is ice chakra. Now, Repulsion!" I repealed the following waves, sending them back at her. I reached out and grabbed the door of our castle and entered it.

"Chakra. I think Dad said something like that before," she said, splitting the waves of snow in half.

The door swung open as Shion drew closer with another wave of snow ready.

"Leave my brother alone!" my sister said, descending the stairs. She caused the ice around her to break off from the castle and threw it at her.

Shion's siblings got in the way and returned the ice back at her.

"You annoying kids," she yelled, breaking the ice into small shards.

"Such power," Sora said, glancing at Shion.

"I know, she's terrifying," Shion said.

"Hmph, don't turn your backs on your opponents," I said, throwing a snowball at them.

Shion stopped them in their tracks and broke them down into water. A blue Topaz started to appear in the center of her forehead.

Sora's eyes bulged. "Shion, your forehead!"

She touched her head and started to wince at the pain. "What's going on? Why do I have this stone here?"

"You're about to complete your awakening," I said, drawing closer to get a better look.

"Brother, ignore her. Our flag is in danger!" my sister said as she followed after Shion's siblings.

"You'll be fine, it'll hurt for a while, but it'll pass in due time," I said, ignoring my sister. I turned around and followed Shizuka, leaving Sora and Shion alone.

"This place is huge. Where is that flag," Shion's brother's voice echoed from above.

"You won't find it that easily," I said, smirking as my sister and I stood by the stairs. I snapped my fingers, increasing gravity's pull on them.

"My body feels so, heavy," Shion's sister said, falling to the ground.

"I-I can't move," he brother said, clenching his teeth.

"Leave my siblings alone," Shion yelled, creating ice shards around her behind as she stood on the stairs. She charged at me, but I managed to grab her by the wrist. "Let go of me!" She let the ice shards loose, cutting my sweater and shirt underneath.

"Look where you throw those shards," I said, putting my hand over a cut.

"You shouldn't attack little kids."

"Fine, sister take care of them," I said, looking back. All three children were nowhere to be seen. Shion's attack must've broken my hold on her siblings. "Where did they go?"

"They went upstairs," Sora said, glancing at the stairs.

Suddenly the castle started to shake violently. There was a massive amount of power coming from upstairs.

"What's going on up there?" Shion asked. "Is that girl having another tantrum?"

I shook my head. No, this didn't feel like Shizuka's power.

"Who are you people," Shizuka shouted.

"We are from the government," a man answered.

"The government?" Sora asked, rushing up stairs.

I chased after him. That voice, I recognized it from somewhere.

"What's going on," Shion asked. "Why's the government here?"

"I think the military found us," I whispered.

Sora and Shion grew quiet. When we reached the top my sister and Shion's siblings were busy fighting off a group of camouflage-wearing soldiers. Although, their camo didn't work at all in the snow. I don't know why military personnel insisted on using forest-colored gear in deserts and snowy places, but they did.

"Seriously you guys stand out like sore thumbs," I said as a triangular prism of opal arose from my forehead. "Repulsion wave!" I sent the army soldiers flying through the ice wall, crashing into the ground below. Surely the snow would break their fall, right?

"Hello, Shikon," a man wearing sunglasses said. It was my mother's cousin.

"How did you manage to get here?" my sister asked.

"We used this handy new invincibility device," he said, holding up his wrist to show off a silver watch. The man smiled and pressed it, vanishing in front of us.

"That won't work, I can feel your steps on the ice," Shion said, creating a dome of ice around whatever it was she was feeling.

"Nice job, I see you've awakened," the man said, turning back to normal. "What about you? The boy with the citrine eyes, have you awakened?"

Sora kept quiet.

He chuckled. "Pathetic. You're nothing like your father."

Sora gasped. "You know my father?"

His smile vanished. "I once did, yes. All I will say is that you'll never be as strong as him."

"Don't mock him," Shion said, causing the ice to close in on him.

"And this little snow globe is just as bad," he said, removing his contacts. Behind his blue contacts were Opal eyes like mine.

"You're that man who wore the mask," Sora said. "The one who saved that tantrum guy!"

"So, now you remember me."

"You're angry because we defeated your son?" Shion said, smiling.

"I could care less about that foolish boy," Sekin said, approaching her. "He's almost as pathetic as I was when I was his age."

Sora gasped.

Sekin. Mom said he used to be a nice guy. What happened to make him side with his sister?

Shion backed away from him and prepared to strike at his pressure points.

"I won't allow you to do that to me." He lifted his hand and sent her flying into a wall.

"Shion!" Sora yelled, running toward her. "Shikon, take him down."

I grinned and grabbed hold of Sekin, slamming him into the ground. "No need to tell me that!"

"I'm older and stronger than you Chosen one," he said, reversing the flow, slamming me against the roof.

"This guy," Sora said, backing away.

"Don't you dare hurt my big bro!" my sister said, furious as she held Sekin down with her gravity powers.

Shion's own siblings sent ice shards flying at him, shredding his parachute bag.

"Annoying brats."

"Don't forget about me," I said, jumping down from the ceiling. I grabbed hold of his neck and tried twisting it but it was like twisting metal.

"It's a wonder that you are the chosen one. It should've been Nokish, not you," he said, grabbing my arms and swinging me like a human rag doll. Finally, he threw me into a corner.

Nokish? But he just said he could care less about his son. Was he lying? Or was their relationship as complicated as the one he had with his father?

"Shik," my sister yelled, hurrying over to me. Tears stained her eyes as she hugged me tightly.

"I'm sorry," I said, patting her golden hair. I coughed up blood. "I'm not strong enough to protect you."

"Big brother," she wept.

"So, what about you," Sekin said, looking over at Sora. "Aren't you going to fight?"

Sora looked around and grabbed the flag.

"You plan to use that against me?" He broke out in laughter causing the ice to shake. "You are the weakest chosen one ever," he said, lifting him up by the collar of his shirt. "And here I considered sparing you as a favor to your father. But you're so weak, it'll be a favor to kill you instead." He threw him toward the opposite side of the room.

"Sora!" Shion yelled out, creating a snow cloud around him to catch him.

Sekin grumbled. "Tch, I was about to put him out of his misery."

"Damn you," I said.

"Come on Shikon, let's finish this," Shion said. Blood rolled down her left arm.

"My powers," Sora said, wobbling. "Come on, activate!"

Shion lifted huge slabs of ice from around us and covered Sekin with them.

Meanwhile, I increased the gravity around him and the ice, making it too heavy for him to lift up. "Now Shion, the finishing blow!"

"I'll do it," Sora said, hitting the floor with the flag stick. The ice around Sekin cracked and the ball of ice flew down.

"Is this all?" Sekin said, throwing the ice away from him as he fell. Bullets of ice flung up breaking the crystal floors around us.

"Shion!" Sora yelled out. The spot Shion was standing on cracked.

"Sister, Topaz siblings, protect one another and take Sora!" I said, running over to Shion.

"It's fine," Shion said, as the ice stopped moving.

"Come on, let's get out of here!" my sister said, waving at us.

"I'll stay here," Sora said.

"Suit yourself," my sister said as she and Shion's siblings started to walk out. Shion's siblings looked back at their sister and smiled. Suddenly a wall of heavy ice came between us.

"Brother!" my sister yelled.

"Shio!" the Topaz siblings screamed.

"Go on ahead," I yelled out as I tried to lift the ice but something was holding it still. "Damn that Sekin."

"He's holding us here," Shion said. She moved slowly so as to not break the ice. "Here, let me try." She closed her eyes and lifted her hands but the ice wouldn't budge.

Sora punched the ice creating a small crack.

"Good ice," I said, punching the ice.

"Guys stop that," Shion said, staring at the ceiling. "You're making the whole thing shake." A large slab of ice started to break away, falling near her. I ran up and covered her with my body.

"Shion, Shikon!" Sora yelled out as we fell to the floor below.

I let out a scream as something impaled my left leg.

"Shikon," Shion said staring at me as she stopped falling. "Why?"

"I won't allow you to be hurt." I stared at the shard of ice that had impaled my leg when I fell.

"But why? We're teammates. We can share the burden," she said, shrinking the ice but leaving enough to cover my wound. If she pulled it out, I would've bled to death.

I laughed as if it were a stupid question. "You're important to me, silly."

"Shion, Shikon," Sora yelled, running over as the whole castle started to come down. "Damn it, activate!" A flash of orange light covered the ice. Before our eyes, the ice vanished.

"Sora," Shion said, staring at his hand as it glowed.

"You've done it, Sora. You've awakened," I said, smiling as I closed my eyes.
