Folke's Chapter

I know it's been a while. I'm sure most of you can understand with the holidays and how crazy they are. Anyway I promise I'm working on this! Also some exciting news I have been invited again to the Wattpad block party in February!! :) I will be putting up a chapter from my new book "The Zombie King"

Anyway this isn't really an update. This was the chapter I wrote for Folke for the last Block Party.

Folke-

His blonde hair floated around his body as he sprinted through the trees. The trees swirled around him turning into colors of brown and green. He pumped his legs faster. He needed to

forget. He needed to feel the pain that burned inside his entire body as he ran.

Forget, one word his mind kept repeating.

Forget the past. Forget what happened.

He pushed his body even further until his legs collapsed underneath him. He gasped as he fell onto the hard ground, rolling his body onto his back. His lungs fought to be filled with air. His heart pounded violently in his chest, causing the sound to echo in his ears. The sun shone through the trees and into his eyes as he raised his hand for cover. Memories began to flood in as he laid there on the cold forest floor.

The breeze had been cold that day with the wind whipping his long curly hair around in the wind. Spring had been around the corner, but the chilly weather had been persistent. Folke was outside his house, bundled up tightly with a thick blue coat, woven hat, and gloves his mom had spent hours making.

His dad had put him to work early in the morning feeding the horses and mucking the stalls. His little cheeks and nose had been red and dirt dusted his face. Folke had finished cleaning and was now brushing out his favorite mare, Rosy. She was beautiful and sweet as could be, as she let Folke stroke her long brown mane. She nudged at his hand when he stopped to grab a brush.

"Patience, Rosy." Folke whispered in her ear as he began to brush her.

"Why don't you go help your mother with dinner? I will finish up in here for you and I think you could use a break." His father said as he entered the rust colored barn. He bent down to place a kiss on the top of Folke's head.

"I'll come back with a treat for you Rosy." Folke gave her one last pat.

The horses began to pace nervously as Folke exited the barn, their tails and ears flicking. Folke paused and turned back towards where his father was trying to soothe them. A few of the horses began to kick at their stalls as the nickered and neighed, the sound echoing.

"What has gotten them so riled up?" Folke said walking back over to Rosy who's eyes were shifting back and forth. "It's okay girl."

"I'm not sure what has got them so worked up."

Before his father got the words out, the ground began to rumble underneath them and the sound of gravel crunching in the distance was heard. Folke made his way back to the door, but was stopped by his father's grasp.

"Shhhhh..."His father said as they sat there in silence listening.

The rumble grew closer and a roar followed. The sound of gravel being spit out and flopping around sounded off the barn.

"Folke, I need you to listen to me." His dad grabbed his shoulders making sure folke was facing him. He bent down and stared into Folke's blue eyes. "I need you to run and run fast. Go into the woods and hide for me, okay?" His father's voice broke as he spoke the words.

Eyes wide, Folke nodded, turned and ran out of the barn towards the forest. His legs pumped faster and faster as he made it to the thick line of trees. He tripped over his feet as his eyes struggled to adjust to the sudden loss of sunlight. His heart beat in his chest and his lungs burned with every breath he fought to take. His small body fought to keep moving forward as his legs ached with every step he took.

Folke stopped and plopped his small body up against a tree, his legs refusing to go any further. His breath was ragged and he coughed as he tried to find a steady breath. He leaned his head against the tree behind him as tears began to pour down his face and onto the ground beneath him. The sobs racked his body as he let the fear really set in. He sat there until his sobs turned quiet and the tears had dried up.

The forest was quiet with the occasional bird chirping in the distance. His ears perked up as he heard the crunching of footsteps in the distance. Panicked, Folke looked around before he swung his body upwards and began to climb the tree he had rested on. Limb by limb he climbed and climbed. His arms begged him to stop, but the adrenaline kept him moving upwards. When he could no longer see the ground below him, he stopped and pushed his body up against the trunk, tucking his legs in to his chest.

The footsteps below grew closer and closer. Folke peered down, but the branches were too thick to see around him.

"You saw him run into the forest?" A raspy voice questioned.

"Yes, the little twerp headed straight towards the forest." A second voice sounded.

"Let's spread out and search through these woods. He's too small to have gone too far." The first voice stated.

Folke peered down again and his heart stilled in his chest as a warm fear spread through his veins. Below the tree stood a creature unlike anything he had seen before. The top of the creature's head was red and had black splotches of scales spread throughout it. Folke could see that the creature had large black spikey hooves in place of feet. As the fear pumped through him he pushed his body farther up against the trunk, until pain shot through his back. He listened, quiet, as the footsteps retreated deeper into the forest.

He sat like that as long as he could until his back throbbed from the rough trunk behind him. He let his body fall slack and pushed his legs out onto the sides of the limb he rested on. He looked up towards the sky that was dusted in purple and pink hues. He rested his body, preparing for a long night in this tree and hiding. He watched as the sky turned darker and darker until it turned black. He watched as the stars came out and began to glitter up above. They twinkled and shone as he fought to focus on them. His eyes became heavy but he forced them to stay open.

He laid there all night. His eyes felt like lead as he made his way down the tree with slow, cautious moves. His feet touched the ground and Folke swayed on the solid ground. Gripping the tree, he found his balance and pushed himself up and off of the tree. He walked through the forest this time, keeping a careful eye on his surroundings and listening for anything out of place.

He made his way through and saw the clearing that opened into a tall field of wild grass right by his house. He peeked out from behind a tree and saw his house sitting at the bottom of a hill. Everything looked eerily quiet as he sat behind that tree, but as he watched he saw no sign of anyone or anything close. Folke crouched his short legs down and began to make his way towards the large barn. As he opened the door a smell arose causing him to take a step back outside the door. He grabbed the door and pushed his head towards the barn. Bile rose in his throat and released onto the floor as he saw Rosy lying to the side, dead. As his eyes made their way across the barn he saw the rest of their horses had been murdered as well.

Folke's stomach churned as he ran towards the house without caring the noise his feet made. He threw open the backdoor and it swung in the wind. He screamed as he saw his mother's body lying in a pool of blood next to the oven. The room had been destroyed and pieces of furniture were scattered around her body. As he moved closer he grabbed onto her hand.

"Mommy, wake up please. Please mom." He shook her hard as her body felt stiff and unmoving. "Please..." he begged.

He bent his body down and lifted her pale face into his chest holding on to her tightly. The tears rolled off his face and onto hers, washing the blood away from her slender face. He sat there holding her in his arms for a while before releasing her and moving deeper into the house. He came up into the living room and saw his father's body slumped against the wall closest to the front door. His dad's eyes were open in terror looking towards where Folke stood, but no breath escaped his lips. Folke lurched towards him, reaching out as he neared. His father's body was as stiff and cold as his mothers had been. Folke sat there next to him letting the painful truth set in. He held his father's hand in his as he sat there staring at the wall before his eyes began to shut against his will. Folke let his head rest on his father's shoulder as he let the exhaustion take over and his body fell asleep.

A sudden jerk brought his body into attack mode as he threw his hand out in front of him.

"I'm not here to hurt you." The man in front of him said as he carefully grabbed onto Folke's hand. "Are you hurt?" The man's eyes roamed checking for anything out of place on the boy's body.

Folke kept his mouth shut as he starred into the man's big brown eyes. The man in front of him resembled his own father's dusty blonde hair and deep brown eyes. The man frowned at Folke's silence.

"I'm sorry we weren't here sooner. We had heard there was a string of attacks going on and we tried, but we weren't fast enough. My name is Aaron." His eyes glimmered as the tears threatened to release.

"My..m-om.. and d-ad." Folkes voice shook with every word.

"I know. I know." Aaron soothed. "Why don't you come with us and we can get you fed and some rest."

"I can't leave my parents."

"there is nothing we can do for them now, son. But I can promise you we will give them a proper burial and you will be cared for as well."

Folke looked towards his father whose eyes had been shut and body placed onto the floor. He looked peaceful now laying dwon on the ground. As Folke lifted his eyes he saw his mother had also been moved into the room and the blood had been cleaned off her face. Folke watched as a few others entered the house, cleaning things up on their way.

"You can go up and grab some things if you'd like." Aaron said in a soothing voice and led Folke up the stairs and into his room. He grabbed a bag and began to stuff some things into it. He moved into his mother and fathers room and looked around until his eyes landed on a silver chain with a heart shaped pendant at the end. Folke opened it and saw the dried dandelions his mother had placed in the locket. He quickly threw it around his neck and made his way back to Aaron.

"I'm ready to go."

Aaron grabbed the boys hands and led him down the stairs and out onto a large horse.

"His name is Lucky, he will take good care of you until we get back to our camp." Aaron helped him up onto the large black horse. They took off into the forest and away from the home that had brought him so many happy memories.

Folke let the tears fall down as he laid in the dirt where he fell. The day had haunted him, awake and asleep. He shook off the fall and raised his body. After that day he had gone down a dark path and for a time he let the vengeance and anger eat away at him. He had reveled in the killing of demons and vampires. Even now that he had let go of the anger, he still couldn't deny the love of watching the life drain from these monsters eyes.

Aaron had trained him to control his anger and channel it in other ways, but it lingers deep inside of him. When Aaron had been captured by these creatures Folke swore on everything he would get him back. He had gathered as many that he could for the attack that day. He couldn't help the smile that spread across his rugged face as he remembered the bodies of demons lying around the compound after they had thrown explosives into it. The fear in the eyes of the vampires as he had carved out their hearts and worn their blood on his face.

He lifted back into standing as he began to jog through the forest letting the anger flow through him. He made his way towards the pond that had become his spot to think. As he neared it, he heard the sound of humming. Folke stopped jogging and began to quietly creep up towards the pond, on guard.

His breath hitched in his chest as he saw a woman sitting by the water. Her pale blonde hair swayed in the wind wildly and whipped around her face. Her pale blue eyes were focused on the water. He moved closer, stepping on a twig and bringing her attention his direction. Folke silently cursed as she jumped up off of where she was sitting and faced him, her big eyes widened with fear.

"I didn't mean to frighten you." Folke said as he starred at her. His heart thumping in his chest, he tried to regain his composure.

"I scare easy right now." The girl said looking back down towards the water. The sadness shone through her eyes as she watched the water flow down into the stream.

Folke had known that Aaron had taken a female home with him after the attack on the compound, but he had no idea how breathtakingly beautiful she was. Folke smiled down at her again.

"I'm sorry, again." He said as his smile widened.

He sat there listening to her talk. Her voice was sweet and melodic. He felt a peace set in as the two introduced himself and talked.

Adelina. She had said her name was. The way it rolled off her tongue was music in his heart. Soon she started to open up more to him about the horrors she had experienced. His heart hurt as she told him about what she had been through with the same creatures that had ruined his life.

Soon Folke had offered to take her and show her around the village, not ready to part ways with her yet. As they talked her eyes would light up in a smile every so often. They walked through the village together and Folke introduced her to everyone he knew. As they made their way back to Aarons house he watched her from the corner of his eye as she smiled and her eyes lit up. He laughed at her using her hands animatedly to speak, flailing them every direction.

"Thank you for showing me around the village." she stated as they walked up the stairs.

"I don't mind. I can come by tomorrow some time or we can meet up some time soon if you'd like."

She nodded and he watched as she went into the house and shutting the door lightly behind her. He smiled as his heart felt a jolt of happiness shutter through. He realized he hadn't smiled like this in years and as he strolled off back into the woods, he couldn't help but laugh.
