17. As Old As Your Omens

A few days had passed since anyone visited her room, besides those who brought her meals. Adelina laid on the bed watching the fan as it spun in never-ending circles. Her thoughts were racing, just as they had every day since she spoke with Asmund.

"People you care about will die"

Those words kept playing in her head, unending, just as the fan spun above her. Her body shook in fear every time somebody would knock on her door.

Please, please, please don't let it be time, she pleaded to herself. But what could she do? She was weak compared to these creatures. How was a weak girlsupposed to stop supernatural creatures and their sacrifices? These thoughtsbrought tears to her eyes and she began to sob in to her pillow, beating at thesoft mattress.

A knock at the door made her jump up and face the source of the sound.

"Come in," she said as she wiped the tears from her eyes and straightened her clothes out.

"Sorry to disturb you, but we have good news." Charles said as he stepped into the room. He was followed by Samuel and Frederick.

"Are you joking? What kind of good news could you possibly share with me?" She laid back down on the bed to watch the fan instead.

"You'll be moving into your permanent room today," Samuel spoke up.

"Permanent," Adelina scoffed.

"Nothing here is every permanent is it? The brothers could easily tire of me. Or how about somebody decides to tell them my blood somehow will resurrect someone or some crap like that.I'm sure there willbe a reason to be rid of me soon enough. And you know what, maybe that won't beso bad. I think I'd rather you all be rid of me instead of keeping me away fromeveryone I care about." Adelina let the bitterness pour out of her.

All three men remained silent and stunned. Finally Samuel cleared his throat.

"Well let's get going to your new room. I think you'll enjoy it. You'll have more entertainment and won't have to sit around staring at a fan spin."

She picked herself up, lazily, off the bed. She lumbered towards the three men and followed them out the door. They walked through the corridor's twisting and turning before they finally stopped down a small hallway with multiple doors. Adelina watched as a guard sidestepped away from a door as they walked up on it.

"This is Edward, but he is only a temporary guard. Frederick, Samuel, and I will be your main guards. Asmund, Falentine, and Taavi's rooms are all down the hall at the end too. Obviously, if there is anything you ever need you will be able to ask. You'll be safe as well." Charles said giving Adelina a reassuring smile.

"Safe? More like watched or guarded. No other way to describe this prison."

Without another word, Charles turned the knob and they entered into a large room. The room had been painted a beautiful light green color. She took in the large bed that had a polka-dot bed spread and matching pillows. Her heart skipped as she noticed a large French door.

"Asmund said I'd be able to spend time outside with a garden?"

"Yeah there is a garden outside. It is quite large. It connects to all these rooms in this corridor. You are welcome to take a look, but we have a meeting we need to attend." Samuel said and turned on his heel. The three of them exited the room in one swift motion.

Adelina looked around some more taking in all the beautiful paintings on each wall. She also noticed a large closet and bathroom as well.

"At least I'll be comfortable until they kill me." She said to herself.

Soon the thought of her family seeped into her mind and she realized how selfish she was being. They were sitting in a cold, dank prison while she lived a life of luxury. Lost in thought, she walked over the large doors and stepped outside.

The wind was cold and prickled at her skin as she stepped into the garden. She went to sit down close to a fountain that was spraying cold water into a pond below.

"You'll catch a cold if you are out here without a coat." A voice said and Adelina jumped up and swirled around to face the person who had spoken.

"Tessa?" Her heart skipped a beat and tears brimmed in her eyes.

Adelina didn't think as she ran towards Tessa, throwing her arms around her. Tears spilled from her eyes and onto Tessa's shoulder, dampening the warm coat she had on. Tessa wrapped her arms around Adelina.

"I have missed you." Adelina said as the sobs of joy racked through her body.

"I missed you too, Adelina." Tessa pulled away and led her back to where she had been sitting by the fountain.

"Where have you been?" Adelina questioned. She had so many things she wanted to ask her, but this was the first thing that came from her mouth.

"I've been here, since I left the Illysia." Tessa said; being vague on her answers.

"Well I figured, but what happened to you? That night you never came home. Dad and I went and looked for you but things happened." Adelina paused.

"I don't even know where to begin with that story. I'm sorry if it is overwhelming with all these questions, Tessa. But I just don't' understand. I haven't been allowed to talk to anyone for more than a short time. And now here you are" Adelina clasped onto Tessa's hands as she said that.

"I don't know where to begin, Adelina. I am fine, though and so are you. That is what matters, right?"

"Haven't you seen the creatures that live behind these walls, Tessa? Have you seen the things they do? They have mom and dad in a prison. Irene, Lydia, and Molly are with them. It is awful down there. And Daniel." She choked out the last part.

"Daniel has been beaten, Tessa. I only saw him for a brief moment, but he has been tortured. They won't let me near him. And they say they need me, for some kind of ritual. They say they will kill people I love to bring their father back from the dead." Adelina rambled on as she became more hysterical with every sentence.

"Shhh... It is okay. We are together. That is all that matters now." Tessa held Adelina's head on her shoulder, running her hand through her curls.

"But what about Mom and Dad? And our sisters? Tessa they won't even tell me who they are going to sacrifice." Adelina lifted her head to look at Adelina.

"We can figure this out, Okay? For now I am just happy to see you."

Adelina stared into Tessa's eyes. Something was different about her. She smiled down at Adelina, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. She hadn't shed a single tear upon seeing her sister.

"Tessa, you seem different. Are you okay?"

"I am fine Adelina. I am just happy to see you."

Adelina sat there staring at Tessa for a moment longer, before pulling her back into a hug. She was being paranoid. She held her close to her once again sobbing into her hair.

"Well, would you look at the happy reunion we have here." A voice boomed from behind a willow tree. Falentine stood staring down at them.

"Falentine." Tessa greeted him. She stood and sauntered over to where Falentine stood. She wrapped her arms around him.

Adelina stood and backed away from the two, who stared at her. Tessa smiled widely, while Falentine looked impassive.

"Wh-a-t is this?" She stuttered out.

"They've been taking good care of me, Adelina. I've become close to them. I've never had this kind of freedom before. I've never been treated like this before in general. And now you're here with me." Tessa chuckled and smiled widely as she looked up at Falentine. A look of admiration passed through her eyes.

"They have our parents TESSA! Our parents!" Adelina became hysterical.

Why was Tessa acting this way?

Tessa let out a barking laugh.

"Our parents? They aren't our parents Adelina. They are just two people who were put in charge of keeping up locked away and hidden from the world."

"What have they done to you Tessa? Why are you acting like this? Of course they are our parents!!"

"No, Adelina, they aren't. Just ask them next time you see them."

Adelina leaned back on to the edge of the pond. Her head began to pound, as her heart raced. She looked down and watched the water beneath her ripple. She felt her legs wobble and soon she fell to the cold hard ground.

"You're lying. They brainwashed you." Adelina stated plainly as a sob escaped her throat at the end.

"You'll see Adelina. You'll understand soon." Tessa said.

Falentine stood there with Tessa, unmoving. His gaze was cruel and a smile tugged at his lips as he watched Adelina.

Adelina picked herself up off the ground, not letting her eyes drift back to the two of them, and ran to the French doors to her room. She threw them open and flung herself inside. She rested her body upon the cold hard doors and slid down to the ground.

"Tessa, what have they done to you."

"It's all chemistry of a car crash."
