11. Always Second Guessing
Adelina had laid in the same spot for hours, her body a lump in the floor. She felt like all the hope had been sucked out her body. She was losing control of her mind, slowly unraveling into insanity.
As she laid in the floor with her back up against the wall, tears began to build up in her eyes.
"When did you become such a big cry baby,"Adelina mocked herself.
She was still playing the victim and she was fed up with it.
She sat in the floor crying while her family was out there. She thought of Daniel and the horrible memory of one of the men grasping him by the throat.
"Is he okay?" she sniffed.
"Do you often sit around and talk to yourself?"
Adelina jumped as the voice startled her. She turned towards the voice and saw a man standing in front of the door. She sat there for a moment studying his features. Her eyes widened and mouth dropped open with realization.
"YOU!" Adelina yanked herself up and stalked over to the man standing in the room. Rage shook through her body and angry tears began to spill from her eyes.
"Ah so you do recognize me, then again how could you forget a face like mine?" the man said as he bowed low and smiled wide at her
"You, YOU WERE THERE in my town. You are the reason all this has happened. You MONSTER!" Adelina said.
Adelina, in a fit of rage, lifted her fist and threw a punch at the man. He grabbed her hand and jerked them behind her back.
"And what are you going to do with all this anger you have, Adelina?" he began to laugh.
"I was right about you." the man whispered in her ear and placed her arms to her side.
"Now lets not try that again, okay?"
Adelina backed away from him until she felt the cold wall against her back.
"Why are you here?"
"To take you to the doctor. I've been told you have a few nasty cuts that need to be looked at," his tone was no longer playful.
"I'm Samuel, by the way," Samuel offered her his hand.
Adelina stared at his outstretched hand with her mouth agape. She threw her hand towards his and violently pushed his away.
"I know who you are. You are the reason this happened. You did this to my family and to my friends."
Adelina lifted her fist, thinking of throwing another punch, but she looked down at her injured arm.
"I'll go with you, but I'm not taking your hand. I'd prefer you not to touch me either."
"Well what the lady wants she shall get," Samuel mocked.
"Follow me."
He punched a code into the door again and Adelina followed him to the exit of the room. His hands fell to his sides and he is careful not to touch her.
She looked behind her as they stepped into a large hallway and noticed someone else was following them too. She stared into the other mans harsh eyes and realized he was another one of the other men who had been at her village that day.
"Sorry, but we heard you like to run. Extra guards to make sure that you don't do something stupid."Samuel said as he noticed Adelina glaring as rage flashed in her eyes in Frederick's direction.
"Although I don't think you'd have much luck. This place is pretty much made out of concrete. It can survive almost any kind of attack. We built it that way on purpose, you see. Plus the guards are also pretty vicious," he said while he pointed to a creature guarding a large door.
Adelina tried to keep a straight face.
Don't show fear, she kept repeating over and over in her head.
As they neared the creature, though, she couldn't help but jump back. The creature had horns, like a elk. It leered at her and she noticed tiny razor like teeth framing its mouth. She wanted to scream but wouldn't give them the satisfaction.
"Lovely things aren't they?" Samuel said. Him and Frederick laughed as Adelina scowled at both of them.
The two men led her forwards and through the halls. Adelina noticed more and more of these demon creatures guarding a lot of the doors. Every time she saw them she couldn't stop her heart from racing.
"You should be thanking Asmund. Falentine had assigned some more colorful guards, but Asmund didn't want to frighten you." Frederick spoke this time as he noticed Adelina's mouth drop every time they passed a guard.
"Oh, I'll be so sure to thank all three of them for all of this." She rolled her eyes at the thought.
They walked for a little while longer and soon the air began to stink of disinfectant and alcohol. Adelina hadn't smelled that smell often, but she recognized it from the few times her mom had cleaned up her father after he had hurt himself.
Soon they come up to another door and another guard at the door. Samuel looked at the demon, who stepped away quickly. He pushed a few buttons and the door opened to reveal a room covered in wall to wall with books and various tools.
Adelina gasped. She had never seen anything like this before. She felt her heart race, again, when she noticed how awful some of the tools looked.
A young woman stepped out from behind a shelf and smiled when she saw Adelina. That smile didn't last as Frederick and Samuel entered the room after speaking to the guard outside the door.
"The princes have ordered her to be cleaned up and checked out. She is going to need some stitches. I'll be outside. Just let me know when you're done." Samuel said, not a hint of kindness in his voice. Him and Frederick both leave and shut the door behind them.
Adelina's eyes grow bigger as she looked around. The young woman noticed her fear and gently grabbed her hand.
"Shhh don't worry nobody is going to hurt you here. You're okay." The woman gave Adelina a few reassuring squeezes.
"I'm Malora, I'm the doctor here."
"I'm Adelina."
"Let me have a look at what you have under those bandages on your hand and arm."
Malora began to unravel the make-shift bandages from Adelina's arm. As she does Adelinas arm began to bleed profusely.
"Yeah, you're going to need stitches for that one. I'm going to numb your arm. Let me see the other one on your hand real quick too."
She unraveled it but it doesn't gush blood like her arm did.
"That one I think we can just glue. Let me clean up both of these real quick and we will get started"
"I'm sorry, but what?" Adelina looked at Malora with horror.
"Why would you glue my wound?!" She had heard of glue but not for a wound.
"Don't worry I promise I know what I'm doing. Before I was captured.."Malora said but trailed off before finishing.
"You were captured too?"
"I was a doctor for my town. I didn't know a lot about medicine, we honestly didn't have a lot of illness or anything. I was trained though and I did know how to handle illness should it arise or minor cuts. When I was taken here, though, I was trained immediately in a more 'modern', as they told me, medicine. They have a few other doctors, but I'm the only human one."
Adelina stared at Malora in shock and Malora decided it was the best time to use the needle to numb her arm.
"Ouch!!"
"Sorry, I thought while you were distracted would be the best time to get that out of the way."
"So we both were captured? Do you have any idea why?"
"I honestly have no clue why you were captured. I was captured mainly because they wanted a human doctor. I'd probably be in a worse situation if it wasn't for my knowledge." Malora said and began threading the needle through the wound on Adelina's arm.
"But why me?" Adelina asked again hoping for some answers.
"I don't. I'm sorry. It must be something, though, because there are only a few humans that reside here. The rest get locked up temporarily downstairs and usually they stay down there and are used as a food source. Occasionally, some get sold or traded but most are just food or playthings for the princes and their guards."
Adelina gasped and felt the bile rising up in her throat.
"Oh shit. I didn't mean to scare you. I'm so sorry. Besides I've said too much. Listen, I'm not one who is gong to sugarcoat things for you. This place isn't a good place. This is nothing like where you came from. These demons here are cruel. They will not hesitate to kill or hurt."
"I'm not planning on just standing around to let them kill or hurt me."
They sat there in silence while Malora finished stitching her arm. She wrapped it up carefully in soft cotton bandages. Malora grabbed Adelina's hand and began to work on cleaning it up as well.
"I'm sorry what happened to you, but thank you for telling me the truth. I'm glad at least I know now how ruthless these men or whatever they are, are. They have my family. They have my entire village. I'm not going to just stand down. I can't just give up on them. I can't just give up on Daniel.
Malora looked up at Adelina and raised an eyebrow in question. They sat in deafening silence for a few moments. Malora finished cleaning up Adelina's hand and glued the skin together. She wrapped the hand up tightly and walked back towards a large cabinet.
"We will have to change your bandages a few more times. Be careful when you shower or take a bath. Try not to get either one wet. Here take this," she said while she handed Adelina some plastic.
"You can wrap this on your hands and arms when you shower so it won't get wet."
"Thank you."
Malora stood up and knocked on the door twice. A few seconds later Samuel entered the room and Frederick trailed behind him. A third man entered the room a few seconds later and Adelina realized he was the third man from the village.
Of course, she thought to herself.
"Is she done?"
"Yes, but as I told her we will have to change her bandage. Make sure you bring her back a few times."
"Let's go," Samuel said and grabbed Adelina's arm.
As they walk through the halls Samuel noticed Adelina's eyes are focused on the ground. He had wondered what was running through her mind, as she looked deep in thought.
After a long silent walk, they arrived back to the room where Adelina was staying. Samuel led her back inside the room while Frederick and Charles stayed outside. The princes had charged the three of them with keeping an eye on her and keeping her safe.
"I need you to get cleaned up. You should take a shower and put on some clean clothes. The brothers want to see you tonight and you can't exactly go looking like a mess."
Adelina looked down and realized her clothes had been shredded and tattered. Her feet were covered in mud and blood. She thought about ignoring his demand, but a hot shower was needed.
Samuel walked out of the room and Adelina walked into the bathroom. She grabbed the plastic Malora gave her and wrapped it around her arm and hand. She took off her torn up clothes and crawled into the warm shower.
She let the water warm her core and soon thoughts began to haunt her.
Her family. She had to know where they were and if they were safe. Adelina felt weak and she slid down the wall until she was in a fetal position at the bottom of the shower. She laid there listening to the water hit the walls. She didn't cry. She held back all the tears that were threatening to escape.
"Are you okay Adelina?" Samuel yelled through the door.
"I'm fine." She said plainly.
"Okay, well if you could try and hurry up. We don't want to keep the three princes waiting."
"Let them wait," bitterness dripped out of Adelina's voice.
"You should know, you won't be the one who pays the price, Adelina."
Adelina's mouth dropped as she realized what he was saying. She got up and out of the shower, as she almost tripped in the process. Adelina didn't bother drying her hair or brushing it. She grabbed the clothes someone laid out before she entered and puts them on.
When she was done she looked down and realized everything was completely white. She ran her hands over the silky fabric. She had never felt or worn anything like this. She gave herself a quick look over and left the bathroom. Samuel stood beside the door waiting.
"I guess that will have to do for now." Samuel grabbed Adelina's arm, but she yanked it away.
"Okay, okay we need to hurry. From what I hear Falentine is already pretty upset."
Adelina followed at Samuel and they walked at a fast pace through the maze of hallways. Adelina tried to keep track of how many times they turned and which direction they were headed, but soon she couldn't keep up.
Samuel smirked as he was purposely taking them the long way. He knew she would try to memorize the place. Finally, Samuel turned down a big hallway and outside into a large garden.
Adelina looked up and saw at least ten demonic guards standing in front of a door that led to a large building. The door made her gasp. The design was intricate and had markings she had never seen.
One of the guards looked at the two of them and smirked. He bowed to Samuel.
"Open the door. The princes are expecting us."
The guard nodded and began to open the door.
As the door crept open Adelina's breath got stuck in her lungs. She felt like time had frozen.
"If you think I am going in there, you are absolutely crazy SAMUEL." Adelina had already began to back away.
Samuel glared at her with a shocked expression.
She sure is brave, Samuel thinks to himself.
Adelina looked around at the guards and at Samuel. Her heart was beating frantically and her vision began to waiver.
She can't think.
She can't breathe.
She only has one thought.
RUN!
