➳ 79: where nothing stays buried
KOL and Marcel rushed into the compound to tell Elijah about Davina and what the plan of action was.
Elijah had a hand on his hip and he licked his lips with a shake of his head. He tapped the table in front of him with his index finger and gave them a stern expression. "This is a war. Please, understand, I despise the situation." He attempted to reason with their anger, brushing Davina's death under the rug as a minor inconvenience.
"No, that's the wrong answer!" Kol snarled and stepped toward Elijah threateningly, almost as if he were trying to start a fight.
Marcel placed a hand on his chest to stop him and looked at Elijah with a desperate face. "No, no, no, I know this is a war but I've lost a lot of friends, too. Today I need your help."
"And you will have it." Ingrid replied seriously from her spot across the room, shooting Elijah a displeased sneer before smiling at Marcel. "Anything you two need, we will do our best to provide."
"Come on, Kol. Let's get you cleaned up." Klaus advised with a small smile and threw his arm around the younger Mikaelson's shoulder, leading Kol out to wash the blood away.
Marcel turned toward Ingrid with a relieved expression and walked toward her, grabbing her hands gently. "Thank you." He said while glaring over at Elijah. He smiled widely and kissed her on the cheek before leaving the compound.
Elijah waited until he was sure Marcel was completely gone to gape at Ingrid incredulously. "You loathe Davina."
"True." She mused with a nod of her head and sat down in one of the arm chairs, crossing her ankles. "However, Kol and Marcel have significant relationships with her and if we can help, we should. They're family."
Elijah laughed humorlessly and shook his head. "Yet... you killed Hayley. A woman I loved."
Ingrid rolled her eyes with a loud groan and rested her head against the back of the chair. "Are you not over that yet? That was forever ago and it was for a good reason! Plus, she broke your heart! She used you then ran off to marry some random man. I did you a favor. You should be thanking me really."
"How do you suspect Marcellus will react when he finds out you killed Camille?" He questioned curiously, ignoring her annoyance.
Ingrid's face slowly fell as she realized that Marcel didn't know that she had killed Cami let alone that Cami was dead. Her heart sunk when she began to ponder how Marcel would take the news.
Elijah noticed this reaction, pointed a finger at her and gritted his teeth together. "You forgot." He commented knowingly with a hint of disgust.
"You kill so many people, you tend to forget who is who." Ingrid commented dully, nonchalantly shrugging her shoulder to cover up her worry. "Do you remember every one? No. They just become blank faces."
Elijah scoffed and clenched his hands into fists, appalled by her attitude and lack of concern. "Do you have intentions of telling him?"
"Yes." Ingrid answered immediately in absolute honesty. "I refuse to lie to him. I forgot that he was close to Camille but... I will tell him."
"Even if he hates you?" Freya asked curiously as she walked into the room with her arms folded over her chest.
"Even if he hates me." Ingrid answered with a nod of her head then looked down at her hands for a moment. Sighing heavily, she glanced back up at them. "I would rather be honest and have him hate me than lie to him and pretend for the rest of eternity. Marcellus deserves honesty and respect and I'm going to give that to him."
The Mikaelsons gathered back in the living room and listened to Freya explain her plan to save Davina from the Ancestors. "I'll draw Davina's spirit to a circle. As long as she's there, the Ancestors won't be able to torment her. With luck that will buy you some time to find a way to resurrect her, but I'll need to channel an Original if I'm going to sustain the spell."
"Well, take me. Put me down for all I care, if it keeps her safe." Kol immediately offered himself up for the opportunity, wanting nothing more than to save Davina from that torment.
Freya frowned and shook her head in rejection. "No, you've been marred by the Ancestors' magic, so, Klaus, Elijah, rock, paper, scissors." She looked between them then noticed Ingrid's disappointed scowl. "You're pregnant. I can't do that to you. It has to be one of them." She explained to her, motioning between the other two Originals.
Suddenly, all of the candles on the table suddenly flared up and Elijah looked at them, uneasy. "That can't be good."
"My early warning system. I think a New Orleans witch is trying to meddle with one of you." She informed him with a dark expression.
"Lucien has the new Regent at his beck and call. It's me he's coming after." Klaus replied in a sneer.
Rebekah's portrait caught on fire and they all gaped in horror and surprise. Freya stared at it and shook her head quickly. "No. He's going after Rebekah."
"He's kicking hornets' nests, until we have no choice but to confront him." Klaus commented, pacing the floor frantically.
"Presumably, he still believes she's at the bottom of the ocean." Elijah reminded them, holding a hand up in a small shrug.
"Exactly." Ingrid said, motioning toward Elijah in agreement. "There is no way in hell Tristan or Aurora gave him the coordinates."
"I cloaked all of you, but with the Ancestors working for Lucien, it may take awhile, but if he wants to find Rebekah, he will." Freya remarked with wide eyes, terror coursing through her.
"I'll go get her." Klaus offered quickly and walked toward the door.
"It's not safe out there." Freya called out frantically causing him to stop on place.
He turned on his heels to glance at her while snapping impatiently. "What then?! Are we to sit here and play cards until Lucien slides Rebekah's bitten corpse down the hall?"
"Let me go." Elijah requested and was about to leave the room but Klaus grabbed him by the arm to stop him.
He turned his brother to face him with a sheepish expression. "I moved her." He admitted and Elijah gaped at him. Klaus scoffed and rolled his eyes. "What, don't look so surprised. I never did like you two sharing secrets."
"Tell me where she is, unless you expect me to stay here and leave our sister entirely defenseless." Elijah snarled unhappily.
"I expect you to prevent Kol from suffering the same loss that you did." Klaus answered, hinting toward Hayley in an attempt to win over his cooperation, and spared a look at Ingrid, who raised an eyebrow and chuckled lowly. "Lucien deserves our collective ire. Today, your grievances are tabled."
They all agreed that Klaus would go retrieve Rebekah while Elijah stayed behind with Kol and Freya.
Klaus was on his way to his car, about to get in, when Ingrid appeared and stops him from getting into the car. He turned toward her, concerned and slightly impatient. "Yes, love?"
"I'm coming with you." She replied sternly, her hand holding his driver side door closed.
Klaus instantly shook his head in rejection and wagged a finger at her. "No. Nope."
"Niklaus, please." Ingrid pleaded strongly and looked up at him. "I cannot stay home another minute. Don't bench me. Please. I am asking nicely."
"Ingrid, I can't risk your safety." He argued, shaking his head again, and refused to back down from his position.
"I am not a porcelain doll you store on a shelf because it's so fragile the smallest touch could break it." She snarled defensively, narrowing her dark eyes into slits. "I am a goddamn Original hybrid. I can take care of myself and you know that better than anyone else."
He walked toward her and grabbed her shoulders, staring deeply into her eyes as he tried to get his point across the very stubborn woman standing before him. "You are pregnant." He said slowly.
"I am aware." She replied in the same manner with slight venom lacing her voice. "But I'm not the person you sit out. I will be perfectly fine. Just let me help. Please!"
Klaus couldn't understand why she was pushing so hard and took a small step back, looking at her in frustration. "Why?"
"When I was pregnant with Hope, I sat by and watched you two muck everything up. I couldn't do anything but try to convince you two morons to back down. We all know how that ended." Ingrid reminded him with a bitter smirk. "I won't be helpless again. There are only two options here, my love. And we both know they end the same way."
Klaus scoffed at her and rolled his light blue eyes. "Seriously?"
"Yes, seriously." She mocked his voice and folded her arms over her chest. "God don't say that. You remind me of Caroline." She snarled in disgust and he rolled his eyes at her. She ignored him and gave him a pointed look. "Accept that I'm coming and appreciate the help because otherwise I'm coming with you regardless and you get to be pissy the whole time." Ingrid remarked with a bitter smile and clapped her hands together. "Your choice, Niklaus. What's it going to be?"
There were times when Klaus enjoyed her stubbornness, found it attractive even, but in this moment, he realized just how frustrating she could be. Ingrid was a woman who didn't ask for permission and if she wanted something, she would take it. She wasn't keen on listening to people telling her what to do and if you pushed her too hard, you were met with a violent force. She did what she wanted, when she wanted to regardless of others.
Klaus held his hands up in the air and clenched them into fists with an aggravated growl. He knew she was right. Sighing heavily, he undid his fists and closed his eyes for a moment. "Fine!" He relented and she grinned in victory. "But---!" He interjected causing her to roll her dark brown eyes.
Klaus then pointed a finger at her, a stern expression plastered across his face. "You do not leave my sight and if it turns ugly, you run away. Don't try to be a hero and save me." He demanded and she rolled her eyes again. This angered him and bit the inside of his cheek and blew out a breath of air to calm himself. "Ingrid, I'm being serious."
"Fine." Ingrid gave in, annoyed, and held her hands up in surrender. "If it gets ugly, I'll flee despite every instinct not to. Abandoning you when you need it sure seems like the ultimate play." She grumbled sarcastically, practically dissing his idea entirely.
"Ingrid--" He growled in a warning tone but was cut off before he could finish.
"I said fine!" She snapped at him then held his door open for him. "Let's go."
Klaus stared at her for a moment and she stared back. A tension between them as they stood a few feet apart, challenging the other to make a move or say something and neither one wanting to back down. They usually had a balance of who had the control, of who got to be the alpha, but there were times where they both wanted that role and the other wasn't willing to back down, to submit.
Ingrid snapped her fingers and gestured for him to get in the car with a raised eyebrow. "Hey! Any day now." She said in annoyance, holding a hand out at her side.
Klaus bit his lip, keeping himself from lashing out on his wife, and clenched a fist. Flattening his lips and shaking his fist to himself, he walked toward the car and glared at her. "Tread lightly, my love." He advised in a slow, warning tone of voice and climbed into the car.
"I could say the same, darling." She shot him a patronizing smile and slammed his door before speeding over to the other side and joining him.
He glanced at her from the corner of his eye while adjusting the settings in the car and inputting the address into the GPS. "At least put your fucking seatbelt on."
Running her tongue across her teeth, she sucked the air and nodded slowly to herself. Grabbing the seatbelf from behind her, she pulled it across her body and snapped it in, the clicking sound signaling it was in place. She then held her hands up with a passive-aggressive expression on her face. "Happy?" She condescendingly questioned then rolled her eyes at him. "Now watch your fucking tone."
He put the car into drive and pulled out of their driveway. It took a lot to hide the smirk that was fighting at the corner of his lips. It wasn't often that he battled with her for dominance and he had forgotten how relentless she could be when challenged. He wouldn't lie and say he didn't enjoy it. Sometimes it was hard not to yield to her but he knew he need to stand his ground and remain stern.
The drive was quiet and not their usual comforting quiet. It was tense and neither said a word to the other, still locked in their conflict. Ingrid never back down, she usually kept pushing until Klaus would ultimately give in. This was a very rare instance where Klaus refused to give her her way and it frustrated her. Adding in the fact that she was seven week pregnant and rapidly approaching the hormonal stage, it was going to be increasingly difficult to get Ingrid to yield at all.
A phone call from Freya was enough to pause their contest and bring them back to the task at hand.
"And Freya is certain this power will be enough to kill Lucien?" Klaus clarified after Freya explained her plan.
"Yes. But we'd be placing Davina in terrible danger. The only thing protecting her from the Ancestors is Freya's circle. Now, if it is broken..." Elijah trailed off suggestively.
"They'll torture her." Ingrid snarled at him in a dark voice.
"What choice do we have?" Elijah questioned in frustration and desperation.
Ingrid threw her hands up and scoffed to herself. "I don't know... anything but that."
"No. Find another way." Klaus ordered sternly causing Ingrid to look at him in shock. "If we destroy Davina, we lose both Kol and Marcel. I won't have us all turning on each other. Keep looking, brother." He advised before handing up the phone and the couple returned to their silence.
Soon after, they arrived to Klaus' secret hiding spot for his sister, the Bayou. He was in the middle of putting Rebekah's coffin into the back of his car when Ingrid rolled her window down and stuck her head out with a bitter smile. "You could have hidden her anywhere in the world yet you choose this bug infested swamp. You make some very questionable choices..." She mused lowly and made a disapproving face.
Klaus knew what game she was playing and instead of giving her the answers she wanted, he decided to play back. "You're right. I do." He replied, closing the trunk and wiping his hands together.
Ingrid raised an eyebrow and narrowed her eyes. "Excuse me?" She intrigued for clarification and watched him walk around to get back in the car. "What the hell does that even mean?"
He started the car again and shrugged his shoulders, nonchalantly. "I don't know, Ingrid. You're smart. You'll figure it out." He answered smugly, giving her a condescendingly look, and drove off.
She shifted her eyes side to side with furrowed eyebrows, debating on what her response should be while narrowing her eyes. "Hmm..." she mused lowly to herself and nodded her head with a humorless chuckle. "Okay." Ingrid mumbled, nodded her head, and pursed her lips. "Oookay..."
She held a finger up and turned back toward him, ready to respond, when a black car came speeding their way and crashed directly into them.
The sound of the horn blaring and the emergency lights blinking was heard faintly off into the distance. Klaus woke up from his position against the steering wheel, bleeding slightly from the head. He groaned in pain until he remembered Ingrid was in the car with him and began to panic. He turned toward her side of the car to see her slumped over in her seat with her head hung low and blood falling from her forehead and nose.
The airbag had deflated in front of her and the only thing that kept her from flying through the windshield was her seatbelt. Klaus quickly reached toward her and placed a hand on her carotid artery, taking her pulse. After realizing that she was still alive, just knock unconscious, he sighed heavily in relief then placed a hand over her abdomen. He tuned into the baby and picked up the faintest of heartbeats pumping away.
Ingrid and the baby were safe. That was the only thing he cared about in that moment until he noticed a figure standing in front of the wreckage. He turned to look out of the shattered windshield to meet the amused smirk of Lucien Castle.
Klaus pulled himself out of the destroyed car and stumbled slightly to his feet, glaring furiously at the beast standing a few feet away.
"Nik, I was hoping to run into you." Lucien greeted him with a smile then suddenly punched Klaus into the car. "Oh come now! There's no fun if it's easy."
The two began to engage in a heated physical battle across the field as Ingrid came to with the sound of her phone ringing away im her pocket. She stired slightly with a low groan then reached across the car to smack where Klaus was prior. "Niklaus... turn it off." She whined at the sound and shifted in her seat, not yet opening her eyes. "Niklaus." She called out to her husband but received no response.
The hybrid slowly opened her eyes and studied the scene around her with blurry and disoriented vision. "What---?" She mumbled to herself in confusion and groaned at the pain radiating through her head. She reached up to touch her forehead and hissed when her fingers made contact with the gash in her forehead. Her hand shook as she pulled it away, looking down to see blood on her hands.
She lifted her fingers to her head again and pulled out a small shard of glass. The gash began healing as she stared down at the glass in her fingers. "What the hell?" She whispered in confusion and turned to face Klaus, only to find that he wasn't there. His seat empty, his door left wide open, and his blood on the deflated airbag. "Niklaus?!"
Ingrid tried to sit forward and was held down by the locking mechanism of the seatbelt. Her back slammed against the seat and she groaned at the soreness in her chest. She looked down at her chest to see a deep purple bruise shaped like the seatbelt across her ribs. It healed and her skin returned to it's usual pale complexion.
Her phone was still blaring away next to her and she undid the seat belt, sending it flying off her body. Pieces of the windows was scattered across her lap and at her feet, the glass clinking together with every movement. She reached for her phone and answered it without checking to see who it was. "Hello?" She greeted in a low grumble while grabbing the handle and opening the door.
Ingrid climbed out of the vehicle and fell to her knees on the grass. The person on the other end of the call had been speaking but she only heard faint noise and a slight ringing in her ears. "Marcellus?" She questioned in confusion, picking the familiarity of his voice out from the static.
"Yes. Did you hear me?" Marcel responded, fury and depression lacing his voive.
"I---I'm... I'm sorry. No." She whispered honestly and squinted her eyes from the harshness of the sun. "Where---? Where the hell am I?"
"Ma? Are you okay?" Marcel could tell from the tone of her voice that something wasn't right and spoke in pure concern.
"No. I'm---" She stumbled on her words while trying to recall what had happened. "Niklaus and I were in the car. We were driving home and now..." She tried to put the pieces together and looked at the debris. "Ah... Lucien crashed into us."
"You were in a car accident?" Marcel asked, worried and frantic. "Are you okay?!"
Placing a hand on her forehead, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Seems like it. Yeah." She remarked with a nod of her head and shakingly stood to her feet. "I'm alright. I'm safe. I can't find Niklaus and the baby---" She cut herself off and her hand flew to her abdomen. "Oh, God. The baby." Ingrid waited impatiently to feel or hear the sound of her growing child's heart beating. Once she heard the very sound she hoped for, Ingrid sighed heavily in relief and smiled slightly. "The baby is fine."
"Now, what were you saying?" She asked the younger vampire in confusion. "I'm sorry. All I heard was Elijah and Davina. Nothing of actual context. Is everything okay?"
"No!" Marcel snarled furiously, a switch had flipped and all his concern was gone, causing Ingrid to freeze in her spot. "Elijah and Freya undid the circle and... Davina is gone."
Ingrid felt her blood run cold and her posture stiffened while her dark eyes narrowed into two dangerous slits. "He did what?" She sneered out in rage. "Marcellus, I can assure you, that was NOT the plan. We told him not to... that..." she trailed off in anger, closing her eyes and resting her fist against she forehead. Taking a deep breath, she opened her eyes and glared at the emptiness before her. "I will deal with Elijah and Freya." She snarled darkly.
"Mom... I love you but it's clear to them I'm not family." Marcel responded in a watery tone and Ingrid could tell that he was crying. "And anyone who's not family just ends up dead."
"No! Marcellus, you are family!" Ingrid agrued sternly and tried to convince him without being aggressive. "Elijah has a warped vision of what family is. Listen, when I get back I will personally help you get Davina back. Right now, I need to save Niklaus from Lucien and save you too. But I swear, I will help you. Please just give me the chance to deal with them first."
"I'm sorry... but I can't trust a Mikaelson." Marcel emotionally rejected her offer.
Ingrid bit her lip and shifted on her feet, tears pooling in her eyes. "Even me?" She asked and when he didn't responded, she took his silence as an answer. Nodding her head slowly, she mouthed a few words before speaking aloud. "Okay. I respect your choice. But... uh... I need to tell you something." She stumbled on her words and ran her hands anxiously against her jeans. "I killed Camille. She's gone."
He was silent and sat on the line for a few more seconds before hanging up the phone without saying anything.
Ingrid slowly pulled the phone away from her head and blinked away the tears. Slipping the phone in her pocket, she stormed off to search for Klaus.
Inside the barn, Klaus stood up from Lucien's attack and turned around to see Lucien with Ingrid. Lucien stood behind her with his hand held above her chest, threatening to plunge his hand into her thorax and pull out her heart. "Oh well, a queen and a king caught by a one-time pawn. Thus the game comes to it's inevitable end."
Klaus stared at his wife with wide eyes then looked at Lucien with a desperate expression. "Don't kill her. Not her. It's me you hate." He pleaded, shaking his head and taking a small step toward them.
"Was I not clear when I murdered Finn? I don't care who dies!" Lucien snarled then tiltled his head with the side with a sinister smirk. "But since you do, indulge me and I might just spare the mother of your child. Kneel!" He bellowed, giving the order for Ingrid's safety. "Get on your knees! I can feel her heart pounding in her chest." He taunted his sire and raised an eyebrow when Klaus stood there, frozen in place. "Do you really want to measure your pride against my mercy?"
Klaus listened to Lucien and knelt to the ground, bowing his head. Ingrid watched her husband submit to Lucien and cried softly.
Suddenly, Elijah appeared from behind and threw Lucien back, away from Ingrid. Klaus stood up and rushed toward Ingrid. He held her face in his hands, observing the tear and blood stains on her face. "Are you alright?"
"I'm okay." She assured him quickly, giving him the best smile she could muster at that moment.
Freya then walked in and started reversing the spell. Lucien shouted in pain as he lost his upgraded powers. After a moment, Freya glanced at Klaus and nodded. "His power's gone. He's nothing but an ordinary vampire now."
Klaus kissed Ingrid on the forehead and walked away from her, slowly approaching Lucien. "You see that family drama you so joyfully derived does have its merits."
"You can kill me but the prophecy still stands, you cannot outrun it." Lucien commented in a mocking fashion.
"I've heard about thousand years too much from you. For a century you lived with my name and you never did quite recover from losing it, did you? You became a man of wealth and stature but you never could crawl from my shadow, and in the end, despite the gift of immortality, you have always known what you truly are. You are nothing." Klaus snarled at him and used a piece of broken glass to cut Lucien's mouth like Tristan did to him over a millenia ago. Lucien looked up at him, tears and blood running down his face and Klaus ripped out his heart before dropping it on the ground.
A few minutes later, Klaus used a lighter to set fire to Lucien's body, watching the flames devour the vessel that once was Lucien Castle. He wrapped his arms around Ingrid, who had stood silently next to him, and kissed the top of her head. "I'm sorry." He apologized earning a confused expression from her. "I was being a dick. Marrying you was the greatest decision I ever made in my entire life. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I love you."
"I'm sorry." She apologized as well causing him to look at her in confusion. "I should have listened to you. I was being a stubborn asshole and I refused to listen to you. But you... were right. I need to sit this stuff out. I need to be benched. It's what's best for the baby." She reluctantly agreed with him and frowned deeply in disappointment.
He was about to respond when Freya walked toward them with a face full of regret. "Klaus, there's something you need to know."
Elijah walked over, prepared for their to be a rage filled battle between himself and Klaus. Ingrid saw him coming and smiled sarcastically at her sister-in-law. "Oh. Is it that you killed Davina?"
Elijah and Freya both looked guilty and ashamed. Ingrid took a step toward them, snarling in absolute fury. "Do you want to know what you've done?! You betrayed everyone! Marcellus wants nothing to do with us anymore because none of you seem to be able to treat him with the respect he so rightfully deserves. Marcellus is family and yet you treat him like a fucking errand boy." She jabbed Elijah harshly in the chest with her finger. "Kol will never trust us again! If someone dies by family, I won't be surprised if it's Kol behind it. You killed the love of his life after he begged you to help him which you didn't even want to do in the first place."
She then licked her lips and shook her head. "We are not family. Family doesn't betray each other at every turn. I am disgusted. Niklaus asked you to find another way and you did the exact opposite without any consideration for anyone else. We have now made three new enemies in the span of a day. Congratulations!" She clapped sarcastically at them. "The list just keeps growing. We were so focused on stopping the bloody prophecy that we didn't realize we started the damn thing! We can only blame ourselves but I---" Ingrid said walking toward them with a dark expression. "---blame you."
