➳ 41: alive and kicking
ELIJAH returned home to find a puddle of blood on the floor of the courtyard. When he walked toward it to take a closer look, he noticed a trail of blood splatter leading to a dead woman's body, which was propped up against the fountain. Elijah followed another stream of blood that trailed up the stairs and down the hall toward the couple's bedroom. He walked in with a disapproving facial expression to see Ingrid covered in blood.
Ingrid turned to him with a wide smirk and walked into the bathroom. "Hello, Elijah." She greeted warmly while turning the knobs to start the water in the shower.
Elijah gave her a face and she realized what he was looking at. Laughing, she waved a hand and pulled her hair up. "Oh! Yes... Niklaus took me out to the Cauldron and we just so happened to have a run in with some witches. I think we all know how that went."
"So, would you like me to remove your leftovers?" Elijah questioned in sarcasm, motioning to the dead bodies in the hallway. "Or were you planning on doing that?"
"Is that vexation I sense in your tone?" Ingrid asked him with a mocking smirk. "Save the lecture. Now, if you'll please give me some privacy so I may wash up." She remarked with a hinting look on her face, gesturing for him to leave the room.
Scoffing, Elijah rolled his eyes and stormed out of their bedroom while Ingrid chuckled and closed the door behind him.
Elijah walked straight into Klaus' study without permission and stopped in front of him. "You took her on a witch hunt?" He questioned incredulously, holding his hands up.
"I simply wanted to persuade those witches to locate the white oak stake for me." Klaus responded with a small smile on his face. "When they proved unable to do so, I let Ingrid have her fun."
"She grows more savage by the day! Can you not see that she is falling apart?" Elijah asked him in disbelief and crossed his arms over his chest.
"Perhaps the problem is your high standards?" Klaus remarked in aggravation then gave him a pointed look. "Ingrid has always been this way. You simply got used to her being cooperative and tranquil during her pregnancy." He reminded him, an amused smirk crawling across his face. "Your hope that she may have changed will only hurt you."
Elijah took a deep breath and closed his eye for a second before speaking through gritted teeth. "I am trying to help her. I thought you were trying to help her, brother."
Klaus angrily rose to his feet and glared at him. "I am helping! You should have seen her last night! Covered in witches' blood and smiling from ear to ear! She is embracing herself again. A little less criticism from you and Ingrid would be fine."
"Niklaus! The mother of your child deserves much better than just fine!" Elijah yelled at him in exasperation and the two glared at each other. "Now, more than ever, she needs a connection to something, some of her humanity, some degree of dignity."
"Yes, please continue to speak about me as though I cannot hear you." Ingrid commented sarcastically as she walked into the room, joining them. She then threw herself down on one of the couches and smirked over at her brother-in-law. "You're disappointed."
Elijah folded his arms over his chest and glanced over at her, matching her observation. "Well, I'm not exactly pleased."
"Oh, my apologies, I was not aware that we had to run our decisions through you." Ingrid snarkily remarked and pointed a finger at him. "I'll try to remember that for next time." She condescendingly added with narrowed eyes and a bitter smile. "So I do that two business days prior or just when I feel like doing it?"
"Ingrid---" Elijah began with a sigh but was cut off before he could get to his point.
"Humanity... it is such an outdated concept." Ingrid thought out loud, running her fingers across her lips as she spoke. "Elijah, your continous and incessant need to prove that we still have humanity after all this time is... almost entertaining."
"Ingrid, I understand you are having a hard time but you can't slaughter everyone in this city because you feel like it." Elijah argued sternly as Klaus watched with a smirk.
"The people of this city--" She sneered in fury with a harsh glare. "--took my daughter from me and I think they should pay the price for that." She explained her side of the story and laughed darkly. "Were you not the one who said we should kill all the witches?" She questioned, reminding him of his previous declaration causing him to look down at his feet. "I seem to be the only one still interested in doing so."
"I miss her too you know." Elijah whispered sadly after a brief moment of silence. "We need to build a home that will be safe for her to return to. That cannot happen if you continue on this path." He declared in a strong tone of voice. "Straighten yourself and your priorities out." He ordered then turned around and stormed out of the room, leaving they hybrids behind.
Ingrid rolled her eyes and sunk down deeper into the couch, looking at the wall in front of her with a blank face. She was absentmindedly fiddling with her wedding band while staring into space.
Klaus watched her curiously and walked toward the couch. "Do you think you're alone in this pain?" He asked her quietly, kneeling down on the floor next to his wife.
Ingrid snapped out of her trance and looked at him in shock. She met his eyes and ran a hand down her face with a loud sigh. However, she didn't respond so he thought of how to comfort her. "I have not stopped thinking about her..." He admitted in a depressed tone of voice. "When it pains me, I seek comfort in the idea of what I will do to those who would harm her."
Ingrid sat up on the couch and gave him a saddened look. "While I am pleased you found something that works for you, Niklaus... nothing is working for me. There is an emptiness that cannot be filled by pretending she will ever come home." She said emotionally before standing up and walked toward the door. "It is time to face in inevitable."
"Where are you going?" Klaus questioned in confusion and worry.
"I'm starving. I'm going to get something to eat. I'll be back later." She answered in a dull voice and walked out the door.
Ingrid walked into Rousseau's and made her way to a table across the room. As she walked by a young man with dirty blond, almost brunet hair and blue eyes looked up at her in shock. She ignored him and sat down at her table. Davina, sitting at the same table as the young man, watched her carefully, nervous and on edge.
The Original wasn't there to pick a fight or get back at anyone, she was simply there to order food and a round of drinks and that is exactly what she did. Ingrid ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a double scotch. She was slowly eating her fried one by one when Davina stood up from her table and walked out of the restaurant.
A tall male with black hair and facial hair replaced her spot at the table and sat across from who Ingrid assumed was Davina's date. "You're stalling." He commented in aggravation while Ingrid effortless tuned and continued on eating her foor, not bringing attention to herself.
The younger male rolled his eyes and sighed. "No, that's not creepy at all, watching me on me own date." He said sarcastically.
"Stop complimenting her and find out what she's hiding." The other one sneered furiously.
"I'm wooing her, Finncent. It requires charm, and personality-- something you'd know nothing about." He remarked in a taunting manner with a glare.
"Our mother wants answers, and if you can't get them, we'll do this my way." Finncent threatened through gritted teeth.
"Oh, what are you gonna do?" The brunet questioned with a smirk. "You gonna bore her until she can't help but tell you everything?"
"If you want to find out if someone has a weapon, you provoke them into using it." He explained harshly then cast an glance in the hyrbid's way and sat back in his seat. "Ingrid's here so don't blow our cover."
Davina pushed through a crowd of people to find her date, looking confused as everyone filed out of the restaurant. "Kaleb? What's happening?" She asked them with furrowed eyebrows.
"Some fellow just announced they were closing for a private party." Kaleb replied in annoyance.
"We should leave now." Davina urged anxiously.
Then a group of werewolves blocked the doors with taunting facial expressions. "And what's your rush, sweetheart? Why don't you stay and party with us?"
"Get out of our way. Now." Davina snarled angrily with a matching glare.
When the werewolf didn't move, she hit him with a pain infliction spell that brought him to his knees His fellow werewolf friends surrounded Davina and Kaleb, who immediately began to panic. "Can you do that with the rest of them, or...?"
"...Not all at once." Davina answered fearful, backing away from them.
The werewolf rose to his feet and shoved Davina across the room. Kaleb tried to shove him back but he was thrown against the wall behind the bar, shattering several bottles when he makes impact. The wolves started to descend upon Davina with their fangs out but Ingrid appeared out of no where and stood in front of her. "I would suggest this be the moment when you run away with your tails between your legs."
Davina hid behind the hyrbid, twisting the bracelet around her wrist and whispering a spell. "Jwen mwen vennez ça maintenant."
A werewolf tried to grab Davina but Ingrid threw him across the room, sending him flying into one of the tables before crashing to the ground in a painful heap.
"You filthy dogs." A familiar gruff voice sneered causing Ingrid to freeze in genuine fear.
Mikael lunged for the werewolves and began to fight them. Kaleb hid behind the bar and became fearful when he noticed the Mikaelson father alive.
Mikael snapped a werewolf's neck while Ingrid ripped the hearts out of several others. Across the room Davina had been grabbed by a different werewolf and in the struggle, she lost her bracelet. Ingrid sped toward them werewolf and sunk her fangs into him, bleeding the wolf dry.
Mikael noticed Davina's mistake and smirked victorious. "Well, now. What an interesting turn of events." He picked Davina up off the floor by the front of her shirt and bared his fangs. "I'm going to enjoy this, girl."
Ingrid let go of the wolf's dead body and looked up to see that Mikael was about to feed on Davina. She began to sped toward them when Elijah arrived and shoved Mikael off of the young witch, not realizing right away who he was. When he finally saw Mikael's face, Elijah was stunned and gulped in fear. "Father?"
"Hello, son." Mikael greeted in a sneer and tilted his head to the side. "I'd hoped to see your brother first, but we have some unfinished business as well."
Elijah sped toward his father and the two began to fight. Mikael pulled the white oak stake out of the waistband of his pants and aimed it for Elijah's heart while Elijah desperately tried to push his arms away while Ingrid sped in their direction and pushed Mikael away from him.
Meanwhile, Marcel arrived and immediately rushed to check on Davina. "We're getting out of here."
"No! Marcel, I need my bracelet. I can use it to control him." Davina informed him frantically, her eyes wide. Marcel noticed the bracelet nearby beside a dead body and quickly rushed to grab it.
Mikael grabbed Ingrid by the throat and held her down against one of the tables. She grabbed his wrist, pushing it away as he attempted to stake her in the heart with the stake.
Elijah broke a chair into pieces by tossing it against the floor and stabbed Mikael in the side with a makeshift stake. Mikael groaned in pain and eased up just enough for Ingrid to get the upper-hand and shove him away from her.
Marcel grabbed the bracelet and tossed it to Davina. Mikael noticed what was happening and sped away from the Originals, ready to attack Davina instead. However, she managed to put on the bracelet and use it to put an end to their fight. "STOP! Go back, NOW."
Behind the bar, Kaleb was still gaping in complete shock at this turn of events. Mikael sighed and reluctantly sped back to the church. Elijah, who was breathing heavily, stared at Davina in horror.
Ingrid pushed off the table and glanced at the witch with a furious glare. Marcel stared at her as well, disappointed, but Davina just shook her head at all of them and left Rousseau's. Marcel spared the Mikaelsons one last look before following suit.
Elijah finally noticed Kaleb behind the bar and gave him a look. "Something to say?"
Kaleb was stunned but he kept his cool and shook his head. "Not me, mate. Not a bloody thing."
Ingrid turned toward him with an unreadable expression then looked at Elijah, enraged. "That sneaky bitch!" She snarled furiously and threw a chair across the room.
"Ingrid--" Elijah began to try to calm her down but she turned to face him with a vicious sneer.
"No! Nothing you can say at this moment could possibly make this alright." She yelled loudly and ran a hand through her hair. Waving a hand in the air while humorlessly laughing, she looked at him with a flat lipped smile. "You go home. I will deal with this. I just need a minute before I can go home."
Elijah gave her an odd look but nodded in understanding, he knew better than to argue with her when she was in this state. Brushing her shoulder with his hand in a comforting fashion as he walked toward the door.
Kaleb attempted to sneak out quietly when Ingrid's back was turned but she smirked to herself and stiffened her posture. "Where do you think you're going?" She asked while turning to face him with a knowing look on her face. "Kol."
Elijah arrived home and joined Klaus in the wine cellar. Elijah was upset and anxious but Klaus was too distracted to notice right away.
"It is worse than we thought." Klaus remarked in a hollow voice as he broke the neck off of a bottle of liquor and drank a large gulp of it before continuing. "I met the witch, Cassie. I studied her-- her presence, the way she carried herself, the fervor with which she voiced her hatred of our kind. I looked into that girl's eyes, and, I swear to you, Elijah, she's not just guided by our mother. She is our mother."
Ingrid walked in to hear the last sentence and joined them with an unamused look on her face. "Guess what? No, wait, better yet... guess who? I ran into Kol and Finn." She then turned to Elijah with her arms crossed over her chest. "That boy from Rousseau's... that was Kol. Esther has reincarnated them into new bodies. Witch bodies."
Klaus turned to her with wide eyes and Elijah, already overwhelmed and worried about his earlier encounter with Mikael, was flabbergasted by these revelations. "What is happening?"
"I'm going to kill her. I will boil her bones and feed them to the dogs, if that's what it takes." Klaus snarled furiously and took another sip of his wine.
Elijah shook his head and tried to interrupt him. "Niklaus--"
"What? What could possibly be more important than the return of our mother?" Klaus questioned in a panic, turning to face him with wide eyes.
"Mikael." Ingrid answered in a terrified and shaky voice.
Elijah sighed heavily and walked toward him. "...Our father. I saw him standing there in the flesh as you do now. He was enslaved with some spell cast by Davina. He holds the stake. If she chooses to release him..." he trailed off, too afraid to say what may become of them.
Klaus was visibly shocked by this but it only served to make him more determined. "Well, then there's only one question we need to ask, isn't there? Which of our parents do we kill first?"
