➳ 1: bringing out the dead

ABBY Bennett, Bonnie Bennett, and Stefan Salvatore were walking through a secret cave underneath Mystic Falls toward a room that held two coffins.

"Slow down!" Abby yelled breathlessly, trying to keep up with the vampire leading the way.

"Keep up, we don't have much time." Stefan snapped at her impatiently.

"Sorry Stefan, but I didn't have a choice." Bonnie said sheepishly, attempting to reason with her friend.

"It was a choice Bonnie, you made it and now we have to live with it. You told Klaus where the coffins were and he took them." He snarled furiously at her because his plan to get back at Klaus were shattered. "All of them except these two."

Then the two coffin were seen inside the room from the doorway. Abby peaked inside and raised an eyebrow at him. "These are the ones that are sealed?"

Stefan glanced over at the coffins with a nod and tight lips. "Yep. Fortunately it seems to be the ones he cares about most." He then pointed at the coffin with the chains wrapped around it. "Whatever, or whoever is in there, he is terrified of. I want it freed."

Abby nodded in understanding and walked across the invisible threshold. When she noticed that Stefan hadn't followed them in, she looked at him in confusion. "Aren't you coming inside?"

Stefan stopped directly at the entrance and shook his head. "Vampires can't get in. Damon had to compel a couple of Lockwood gardeners to bring the coffin in."

"This is a bad idea." Abby commented as she looked around and got an uneasy feeling about what they were doing.

"Look, if you're really the key to opening up those coffins, I think it's a pretty safe bet you're on Klaus's hit list." Stefan reminded her with a bitter smile on his face. "So I suggest you hideout here and figure out a way to open up the damn things."

"I told you, I don't have any powers." She argued sternly and moving her hands to match her expression, stressing her lack of magic.

Stefan narrowed his leafy green eyes and snarled aggressively at her. "I don't believe you. But time's ticking. Won't be long before Klaus calls his hybrids to find that coffin and kill all of us. So dig deep, Abby Bennett." He sneered her name, tilting his head to the side passive aggressively. "Scrape out whatever magic you have left." He suggested before turning on his heels and walking away from them.

Bonnie sighed heavily in frustration and looked at the signs of the Mikaelson family in the grimoire. "Is this the only grimoire you kept?" She asked her mother in curiosity.

"It was the only one I needed." Abby answered with a nod while looking at the etchings on the wall. "So...what is all of this?"

"Family history." Bonnie answered while leaning against the chained coffin. "About a mother, who loved her children so much, she couldn't bear the thought she might lose them. So she turned them into vampires. One of them is Klaus."

"The one you're trying to kill with whatever is in those coffins?" Abby asked while gesturing to the two red coffins before them.

Bonnie nodded and turned to look at the open grimoire on top of the coffin. "There's nothing in here that's going to help us. I've seen most of these spells." She remarked then noticed a page was torn out. "What was this?"

"It's the spell I used to seal Mikael in the tomb. I burned it and tried to get it out of my head. Didn't work though." Abby answered in shame then paused and pointed to a spell on the page. "Wait...Do you see this?"

Bonnie looked down at it and nodded with a frown. "It's a sealing spell. We're trying to open something... Not seal it shut."

Abby shook her head and turned thr grimoire toward her while pointing to what she was talking about.. "No. Right here. On this side. It's a blood knot. It means to bind it you need two generations. A bloodline. Like... two keys to a safety deposit box."

Bonnie processed her words while furrowing her eyebrows. "So...unbinding it, would reverse the spell. Unseal it. If we did it together. That may unlock it but how to do we get these chains off. Stefan said he tried bolt cutters but they won't work."

"They must be locked by the same spell." Abby remarked with a stern face while pulling at the chains. "There's no key hole meaning no key."

Abby and Bonnie stood on either side of the coffin, holding each other's hands on the coffin, and chanting a spell. After a minute, Bonnie pulled her hands from Abby's and looked at her in aggravation. "You're not trying! We've been at this for over an hour."

Abby sighed and turned away from her before glancing back at her with teary eyes. "The spirits are angry with me. For leaving you. Maybe they didn't want me to have my powers again."

"I had all of those dreams for a reason. The spirits wanted me to find you because your my mom. It's not them, it's you." Bonnie replied sternly then gritted her teeth. "You won't open yourself up to it. You know Dad never talked about you? And neither did Grams. I had no memories of you. So you know what I use to pretend? That you were dead. It was easier to do that than to wonder why you never came back for me."

Tears rolled down Abby's cheeks and she got emotional. "There is no way I can tell you how sorry I am for what I did."

"Yes there is. You can help me." Bonnie replied in determination and
placed her hands over the coffin again, reaching out for Abby's hands.

Abby hesitated for a moment but took her hands and they began to recite the spell again. The candles flared up, a deep rumbling could be heard, and after a moment the candles returned to normal and everything was quiet. The chains on the coffin undid and slowly fell to the ground. Bonnie let go of Abby's hands and went to open the coffin, the lid rattled but didn't open. She gasped in shook and looked at her mother in urgency. "It almost worked. I have to call Damon, tell him that we're getting closer. I'll be right back."

"Okay." Abby whispered uneasily as Bonnie left the cavern. She heard a thud behind her and looked at the coffin. She walked over to it and reached out to open it, but it opened by itself and all the candles flared up. She gasped at what was inside. A brunette woman lied there, sleeping with a golden dagger in her chest. Her skin was gray with deep, blue veins scattered across. She was wearing a long tunic like dress with old blood crusted on the neckline

Abby took a hesitant step toward her and wrapped her hands around the dagger before pulling it out. The woman's skin slowly turned into a pale color as the veins recceeded. After a moment, she opened her eyes and sat up. She sped toward Abby and pinned her against the wall by her throat but paused to look around her surroundings. She realized where she was and smirked happily. She then took the dagger from Abby, pointing it at her before speeding out of the tavern, leaving Abby on the ground.

Niklaus was holding Stefan's arm directly in the fireplace as he screamed out in pain and groaned through gritted teeth. "Go ahead and kill me. I know you'll do it when he brings the coffin." The Salvatore snarled knowingly.

Klaus pulled Stefan out of the fireplace and shoved him with an amused smirk. "You really have given up, haven't you? Where's the fight? Where's the ripper?" He questioned and pushed Stefan in a way to instigate the situation further and push Stefan's buttons. Stefan growled furiously and pushed him back.

Suddenly, Elijah and Damon re-entered the room with one of the blonde female servants carrying a tray.

"Elijah...why haven't you left?" Klaus questioned in annoyance, narrowing his blue eyes.

Elijah smirked and held his hands out at his side. "Where are you manners, brother? We forgot dessert." He pulled the cover off the tray the to reveal two silver daggers and one gold dagger lying on it.

Klaus glanced at it in horror as his heart began to pound harshly in his chest. "What have you done?"

"What have you done?" Elijah fired back with narrowed eyes and an offended expression. "You see, I've learned not to trust your vulgar promises, Klaus. We're doing this on my terms now."

Then a tall, brunette man entered the room wearing a dress shirt and a vest. Klaus glanced at him in shook and backed away from him. "Kol."

"Long time, brother." Kol remarked with a dangerous expression and stalked after him.

A man with long, brunette hair wearing century old clothing sped toward him and Klaus began to plead desperately. "Finn, don't!"

Finn grabbed a dagger off the tray and stabbed Klaus through the hand.

Klaus screamed in pain, rushed away, but turned around and ran into a blonde woman wearing a short, pink dress. "Rebekah!"

Rebekah snarled at him and stabbed him in the abdomen with a dagger. "This is for our mother." She pulled the dagger out and Klaus fell back into Kol's arms as Kol began to restrain him.

Then the brunette woman from the tavern walked into the room with a smirk and Klaus frantically tried to pull away from Kol. "Ingrid!"

"Hello, love." Ingrid greeted smoothly as she stalked toward him and grabbed him by the cheeks. She then held the gold dagger to his chest, right above his heart.

Elijah stared at his family while speaking to Damon and Stefan. "You're free to go." He said calmly and walked over to stand next to Ingrid. "This is family business."

Damon jerked his head at Stefan, motioning for them to leave, and the Salvatore brothers wasted no time leaving the Mikaelson mansion.

Klaus stood by as his siblings trashed his new home and stared down at then floor. "I like what you've done with the new place, Nik." Rebekah complimented as she threw a vase into a painting causing it to fall to the ground.

"I wanted it to be for all of us. A place we could all call home." Klaus emotionally responded as Elijah restrained himself from rolling his dark eyes. "A place we could all be a family. None of us would ever have to be alone again."

"Well you're right, none of us will be." Elijah responded while gesturing to his siblings and Ingrid.

"You're staying behind." Finn added as he walked toward the door.

"We're leaving you, Nik." Rebekah said while joining his side. "Right after I kill that doppelgänger wench, then you will be alone. Always and forever." She mocked using their sacred saying.

"If you run, I will hunt all of you down." Klaus threatened through his teeth with clentched fists.

"Then you'll become everything you hate." Elijah taunted, taking a step toward him with narrowed eyes and a slight smirk. "Our father."

"I'm the hybrid! I can't be killed!" He screamed at them furiously. "I have nothing to fear from any of you." He sneered while gesturing at his family

"You are the hybrid? Is that the title you have given yourself. The all mighty hybrid?"  Ingrid pursed her lips and mused to herself lowly. "How far you have fallen." She commented from her spot behind Klaus causing him to snap his head toward her. He glanced at her in embarrassment and shame.

Elijah was no longer amused and gritted his teeth in aggravation. "You will when we have that coffin."

They all heard the front door open and turned around to see none other than Esther walking in. Klaus gasped in shock as a tear rolled down his cheek.

Rebekah gaped at the woman in surprise and smiled slightly. "Mother?"

Esther pushed passed them and walked straight toward Klaus, who avoided looking at her in the eyes. "Look at me!" She demanded of him and he did as he was told through tears. "Do you know why I'm here?"

"You're here to kill me." He replied in a fearful whisper.

"Niklaus, you are my son and I am here to forgive you." Esther answered strongly then turned to face the rest of her children. "I want us to be a family again."
