Chapter 9
The weeks flew by and the couple's bond was growing stronger with every day. They were inseparable. Their friends got used to the fact, that wherever Bob was, Corrina was for sure with him and the other way around. They even considered moving in together, but decided to wait a bit more. Bob found a good job. Where? Well, at the same antique store, as his love. Now he wasn't only living from the money he earned, every now and then, while playing at Basket Houses, but also from the fixed salary, that actually wasn't that bad. That also meant, that they were able to see each other, even at work. It seemed that everything was splendid and couldn't get any worse, until a one very cold and unpleasant Sunday morning...
She opened her eyes. The room was rather gloomy and she didn't feel like getting up. She looked to her left, at the boy, sleeping next to her. He was laying flat on his stomach, had his arm draped over her waist and was facing her. He was breathing softly, fast asleep. Last night, they were at one of the Basked Houses, where Bob performed. He had already written a few wonderful songs and decided to perform his own works, not only traditional folk songs. She was very excited to hear him. The concert was a success. The audience loved him and she felt that he was gonna be great in the future. After the performance, they went to her flat. They talked and kissed for a few hours, until dawn. He wanted to go back to his place, but she said, she won't let him. They didn't do anything inappropriate. They just laid down in their underwear, on her bed and went to sleep. She still wanted him and he felt the same about her, but they decided to wait, at least a few months.
She delicately touched his face and ran her fingers through his locks. His eyelids fluttered and opened, to reveal his beautiful, blue eyes. He smiled and pulled her closer to himself. He burried his face in the crook of her neck and kissed her warm skin.
-Hello, beautiful- he murmured into her ear.
He licked the shell of her ear and she shuddered.
-Hi, baby- he whispered, out of breath.
He laughed, quietly and kissed her neck, running his hands around her sides and stomach. She moaned and burried her hands in his hair.
After a while, he lifted his head and looked her straight in the eye. His two sea depths were full of love, that was pouring down on her face, body, mind and soul. He looked at her, as if she was the most beautiful thing in the world and the only one, worth his feelings. She loved that look. She dreamed about it every night, every day. She looked up at him and her restless forests held the same amount of love for him. Love that will never die. He kissed her. Slowly, lovingly. Letting her know, they had all the time in the world, for themselves. She ran her hands up and down his bare back, wanting to feel his hot skin, under her fingers.
Suddenly, a telephone started to ring. They broke the kiss and she groaned. He smiled.
-I can take it- he said and started to get up.
-No, babe- she said and got up. -I'll take it, you go make us breakfast.
She kissed his cheek and went to the hall. He followed her, to go to the kitchen, but changed his mind and wrapped his arms around her, from behind, kissing her nape.
-Yes?- she picked up the phone.
She paused, listening to the voice on the other side.
-Speakin'- she answered.
-What?!- she nearly jumped, causing Bob, to look at her, worriedly.
-How is he?
-Which hospital?
-All right, I'm on my way- she hung up and turned around, facing his lover.
-What is it?- he asked, cupping her face.
-It's Mr. Bennett.
-What happened to him?
-He had and accident- she whispered. -Someone attacked him, when he was closing up the store, yesterday. They took all his money, robbed the shop and beat him up. He ended up in the hospital. They said he's in a coma- the tears were streaming down her face and Bob delicately wiped her cheeks with his thumbs.
-Hey- he soothed -it's gonna be all right. Come here- he hugged her and kissed the top of her head.
She wrapped her arms around him, wanting to be as close to the boy, as possible.
-We should go- he said, breathing in her scent.
She nodded and went to the bathroom, to get ready. He followed her. She looked at him questioningly.
-What?- he asked, putting his clothes next to the sink.
-I wanted to take a shower- she said, pointing at the door, hoping he'd understand.
-Go ahead- he turned to the mirror and started to apply some shaving cream on his face.
-I need to undress, to do that- she frowned.
-Oh, right... I'll close my eyes.
She looked at him sceptically, but nodded. She started to unclasp her bra, but saw that he was still looking at her.
-Turn around- she said, blushing.
-Yeah, sure...- he had his eyes still fixed on her delicate form, as if not able to turn his gaze away.
She came up to him, took his head in her hands and turned it, kissing his neck.
-Don't look- she said, taking a few steps back from him and undressing completely, while still looking at him, intently.
She stepped into the shower. While she was doing that, his curiosity took over him and he let his eyes scan her body briefly, before looking down and blushing. He heard the running water and finally felt safe, to continue shaving.
-"Why she has to be so beautiful?"- he thought, shaking his head. -"I swear, this girl's gonna kill me dead."
-Can you hand me a towel, please?- she asked, after a few minutes.
-Yeah, sure. Which one?
-The green one.
-There you go- he handed her the towel, over the shower wall.
-Thanks- she quickly dried herself off and wrapped her body in the towel, stepping outside.
He looked at her, with hungry eyes. She took a few steps away from him, not sure what he was up to. He came closer to her and wrapped his arms around her. He kissed her pasionatelly, running his hands all over her body. She moaned into the kiss, turning her head slightly, to make it deeper. Bob started to tug at the hem of the towel. She quickly broke the kiss, but he only continued to nip at her neck.
-Bob...- she moaned. -Please... Don't...
He only pulled her closer to himself, starting to kiss her shoulders and collarbones, going lower with every second. She tried to push him away, but her body seemed to completely ingore her mind. He started to slowly reveal her upper body, kissing her chest and fondling her breasts through the fabric. She tugged at his hair and was sure, that she was gonna give up, but then something clicked in her mind.
-Bob!- she pushed his chest and caught the towel, that was about to slip off her body.
He backed away. His eyes were hazy and he surely wasn't thinking clearly.
-We agreed to wait- she said, angrily. -Besides, we gotta go to the hospital, remember?
The boy shook his head, as if trying to wake up. His cheeks turned a dark shade of red and he looked down, nodding.
-I'm sorry, Sunshine- he whispered, ashamed. -I don't know what came over me.
Her eyes softened and she slowly came up to him. She touched his cheek and he looked up at her. She smiled and kissed his nose.
-I forgive you- she said. -Just don't do that again.
He nodded, nuzzling into her palm. She smiled.
-I'm gonna fix us something to eat- she said and walked out of the bathroom, leaving him slightly confused and still hot.
He looked into the mirror, at his flushed face.
-"Bob, you fucked it all up"- he thought and got into the shower.
She put on a pair of black jeans and a blue buttoned shirt. She put her hair in a ponytail and applied a bit of mascara and eyeliner to her face, to make her eyes stand out a bit more, than usually. She checked herself in the mirror and nodded in approvement, then she walked to the small kitchen, to make them scrambled eggs. She put the kettle on the stove and fixed them both some tea. She heated up a pan and put some butter in it, to let it melt. She then added three eggs and mixed them. She turned around, to make the table and squeaked at the sight of the boy, sitting on one of the wooden chairs.
-You scared me!- she put her hand on her chest, trying to calm down her racing heart.
-I'm sorry- he said and got up.
He took her in his arms and kissed her head.
-Sorry for my previous behaviour, too- he whispered into her hair.
-It's all right, Bobby- she smiled.
They ate breakfast in silence, listening to the news on the radio. When they were finished, they put on their coats and boots and headed to the nearest hospital. They were told at the reception, after a few minutes of arguing, due to the fact they weren't Mr. Bennett's family, that he laid on the second floor in the room number 27.
She knocked lightly and opened the door. The room was painted white, with a green linoleum floor. On the walls, there were a few paintings of flowers and birds. There was a large window ahead of them. The lime green blind was shut and the sunlight, trying to peek into the room, gave it a slightly sick green colour. There were only two beds in the room, each of them on the opposite wall. Corrina and Bob came up to a figure laying on the left. It was Mr. Bennett. His hair were messy and his face was covered in stiches, same as his arms, that laid on the duvet. He was breathing peacefully, sleeping. Though they knew, it wasn't a normal sleep. She put a hand on the old man's forehead and sighed. Bob wrapped his arm around her waist and patted her stomach reassuringly.
They heard a light knock on the door and a tall man came into the room.
-Good morning, my name's Dr Richards- he said, extending his hand for them to shake it. -Mr. Bennett is my patient.
-Is he gonna be all right?- Corrina asked, with fearfull eyes.
-He's in a serious condition and...- he tried to avoid their gaze.
-Yes?- the couple asked in unison.
The doctor sighed and looked at them.Young, embraced, clearly in love.
-We can't promise you, that he'll get any better- he finally said. -He might have a long life ahead of him, but he might also die tomorrow. His internal injuries are very extensive.
The girl cuddled to the boy's chest, trying to stifle her sobs. He kissed her head, whispering that everything's gonna be all right and held her close, stroking her back.
-I'll leave you now- the doctor quietly said. -If you'd like to talk to me, I'll be downstairs in the room number two.
The young man nodded and uttered a quiet ''Thank you", before the door shut. He pulled a stool, from under the bed and sat the girl on it. She hid her face in his shirt and sobbed uncontrollably. He hid his nose in her hair and held her close. Bob looked at the elderly man and smiled, sadly.
-Baby- he whispered. -I think, we should go.
She just nodded and got up. She clutched to his side, not really trusting her weak knees.
He lead her to his place. He was about to play a concert in the afternoon, but he decided to stay with her. He didn't want her to be alone. Not right now. They sat on the sofa, cuddling, listening to the radio. They asked Dr Richards to call them, if anything changed and they anticipated the call, yet were very nervous about what news it might bring. The tension was in the air and Bob couldn't stand it anymore. He took his guitar and started to strum it. He didn't have a particular song in mind, he just let his mind travel freely. He had no idea, how that song formed in his mind, or why he let it come out.
He was a friend of mine
He was a friend of mine
Every time I think about him now
Lord I just can't keep from cryin'
'Cause he was a friend of mine
He died on the road
He died on the road
He never had enough money
To pay his room or board
And he was a friend of mine
I stole away and cried
I stole away and cried
'Cause I never had too much money
And I never been quite satisfied
And he was a friend of mine
He never done no wrong
He never done no wrong
A thousand miles from home
And he never harmed no one
And he was a friend of mine
He was a friend of mine
He was a friend of mine
Every time I hear his name
Lord I just can't keep from cryin'
'Cause he was a friend of mine.
He stopped playing and stared at the window. Suddenly, he felt a pair of strong, yet delicate arms, that took the guitar from him and wrapped themselves around his slim body. He instinctively wrapped his own arms around his girlfriend. He looked down and saw, that she was crying.
-Oh, baby- he whispered, kissing her hair. -I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to... It was just a song, nothing more. He'll be fine.
He took her face in his hands and looked her straight in the eye.
-He'll be fine. I promise.
She nodded and sniffed. He wiped the tears from her face, with his thumbs. He smiled at her and kissed her nose. She giggled, feeling a bit better, though the smile didn't touch her eyes, that were full of sorrow.
-We've got some time. Let's do something to cheer you up- he said, still caressing her face.
-Like what?- she asked, intrigued.
-Hmm. Maybe... You wanna go to the park?!
She shook her head.
-What about the Enchanted Garden?
-It's probably occupied right now.
-Yeah...- he hung his head, sadly. -A concert, then?
-Too loud.
-Okay... Sorry. I've ran out of ideas.
-Let's just stay here, baby- she stroked his cheek.
He turned his head, slightly and attached his lips to her palm. She smiled, delicately and laid her other hand flat on his chest. He took her hand from his cheek and put it around his neck, then he gently placed his lips on hers, pecking them. She closed her eyes and waited, wondering what he'd do next, but he just sat there, admiring his one true love.
After a while of complete silence, she started to stroke his chest and run her fingers up and down his nape. He shuddered at that and wrapped his arms around her, placing her slim frame on his lap. She laid her head on his shoulder and started to delicately kiss his neck. He moaned quietly. He pushed her a bit away and looked her in the eye. She raised an eyebrow at him.
-What's wrong?- she asked.
He just looked at her in silence. She touched her forehead to his and stared into his blue eyes.
-I don't know what's gonna happen, Sunshine- he started, quietly. -I don't know if Mr. Bennett'll get any better. I don't know, what we gonna do with the shop. I don't even know, if he's got a family! But there's one thing I'm sure of.
-Yes?- she asked, her eyes wet.
-I'm sure, that I'll always love you and never leave you. Even when you're gonna be fed up with me and you won't be able to even look at me. I'll stay with you. No matter what.
She felt the tears, running down her flushed cheeks, but she didn't care. The only things that mattered were his soft lips, kissing her, his hot breath on her face, strong arms, holding her tight and the warmth of his body, enveloping her.
She stayed the night. He wanted to behave like a real gentleman and sleep on the couch, but she insisted on him sleeping in his bed, with her. She just didn't want to be alone, with her thoughts. They cuddled, under a warm blanket. They couldn't sleep for a very long time, each of them rethinking the doctor's words and wondering what the next day'd bring. They of course, hoped for the good news, but they tried to brace themselves for the bad ones. Soon after midnight, they have fallen into a restless sleep, full of weird, dark shapes and fear. The kind of fear, that overwhelmes your body and you can't make it go away, even if you know, it's just your mind, playing tricks on you.
A/N: ''He was a friend of mine" is a song written by Bob Dylan, first performed on 6 September 1961 (I just thought it'd go well with the situation they're in). For more info, check: www.bobdylan.com
Yeah, I know. Five pages and nothing happens. And the ending is terrible. Sorry, about that... :/ And they go on forever about their big love... Meh
