Chapter 13
-What do you think about this one?- she asked, looking at herself in the mirror.
They were getting ready for Bob's concert, at the Gaslight Cafe. She was dressed in a navy blue, short, strapless dress, she bought recently. She looked around, but her boy was nowhere to be found.
-Bobby?- she asked loudly.
She could hear a faint sound of his guitar, coming from the living room. She quietly crossed the hall, only to stand in the doorway and look at him. He was sitting on the sofa, bent over his second lover, his fingers dancing on her strings, carresing them gently. He was in his own world, not letting reality have a hold of him. She stepped a bit closer and sat softly in front of him, on the coffee table. He played the sweetest and softest tunes and she sat there, with her eyes closed, listening to his beautiful voice. During times like this, she found she loved him even more, if it was possible. After a few endless pieces of pure art, she felt a warm hand on her knee. She opened her eyes, only to look into two deep seas of love, in front of her.
-Hi- she whispered.
-Hi- he whispered back.
She leaned in and kissed his lips, gently. He kissed back, closing his eyes and humming, quietly. She smiled. He placed his guitar next to the sofa and took Corrina in his arms, placing her in his lap, not breaking the soft kiss. He gently caressed her body, wanting to feel her warmth against himself. She broke the kiss and looked at him, with love shining in her green eyes.
-I love you, Bobby. More than anything, you know that, right?
-Of course I do. And you know, I'll never love anyone the way I love you- he smiled at her, kissing her jaw and neck.
She laughed and got up. He looked at her, confused.
-We need to hurry, you can't be late- she smiled, winking at him.
-Concert!- he jumped off the sofa and ran to the bedroom, to get changed.
She skipped after him, giggling. He quickly took off his T-shirt and threw on a green turtleneck.
-Is it cold?- he asked.
-Yeah, a little...- she smiled, coming up to him and wrapping her arms around his chest, from behind, laying her head on his shoulder.
-You look beautiful- he smiled at her in the mirror. -That dress looks good on you.
-Thanks- she kissed his cheek. -Wait for me, please. I need to put on tights.
He nodded, pecked her nose and went to the hall. He threw on his warm, trench coat and high boots. She joined him, quickly, put on her coat and boots and they went out, walking hand in hand, throught the empty streets.
-Thank you very much! Thank you!- Bob smiled to the cheering crowd.
She sat right in front of the stage, looking at him in awe and clapping with others, smiling like mad.
-This next song, I wanna sing... Thank you! This next song, I wanna sing is dedicated to someone very special. A girl, that made my life complete. The one, that brought out a poet in me. My goddess and inspiration- he winked at Corrina.
She blushed and looked at him from behind the thick curtain of her eyelashes. The crowd whistled and he began to sing.
Black, black, black
is the color of my true love's hair
Her lips are like a rose so fair
And the prettiest face and the neatest hands.
I love the grass whereon she stands
She with the wondrous hair.
Black, black, black
is the color of my true love's hair
Her face is something truly rare.
Oh I do love my love and so well she knows
I love the ground whereon she goes.
She with the wondrous hair.
Black, black, black
is the color of my true love's hair
Alone, my life would be so bare.
I would sigh, I would weep,
I would never fall asleep
My love is 'way beyond compare
She with the wondrous hair.
Black, black, black
is the color of my true love's hair.
Corrina couldn't hear the cheering crowd. It was only her and her lover. He bowed and came off the stage. He ran up to her, took her in his arms and kissed her. She wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him back. He broke the kiss, giving her one of his sweetest smiles. She smiled back. Their eyes were shining with eternal love, that made the world go on. They were soon surrounded by people, congratulating Bob on his wonderful performance. He smiled nad thanked them, shaking their hands, never letting go of Corrina, who was holding his guitar, standing as close to him, as possible.
-Let's go home- he whispered, kissing her hair.
She smiled and nodded. They put on their coats and headed into the night.
They walked holding hands, in a comfortable silence. The wind blew in their faces and it started to snow.
-Why Judy wasn't with us, tonight?- he asked, after a while.
-She's tired. She's at the hospital everyday. I told her not to come. I'm sorry- she looked at him, apologetically.
-It's all right, Sunshine- he smiled. -I understand. Just wanted to know.
They had fallen into the silence, again.
-It was beautiful- she said quietly, after a few minutes.
He looked at her, frowning.
-What was?
-Your performance. The song. It was beautiful. Thank you.
-You don't have to thank me. I wanted to show you, how much I love you.
She stopped, stood on her toes and kissed his cheek.
-I know you love me and you don't have to show anything to me, but I'm glad you did. I felt special.
-You are- he grinned at her.
She blushed and they started to walk, again.
-What do you want for supper?- she asked.
-Maybe toasts?- he shrugged.
They sat on the floor of Bob's living room. The radio was on and the cats were running around, chasing each other. The two lovers were looking through a box full of bills and shipment papers from the antique store. They wanted to sort everything out, so Mr. Bennett wouldn't have to worry about all the paperwork, after coming back to the shop.
-What about this one?- Bob asked, showing Corrina one of the electricity bills.
-I've already paid that one. Put it over there- she said, pointing at a black notebook.
It took them a few hours to sort everything out and exhaustion started to creep onto their faces and backs.
-I think we're finished- he said, putting away last few papers.
She nodded, yawning. He giggled, got up and picked her up, in his arms. She smiled sleepily at him and closed her eyes, wrapping her arms around his neck. He took her to the bedroom and laid her down on the bed. She smiled up at him and sat up.
-I'm gonna take a quick shower- she smiled and hurried to the bathroom.
He took out his guitar and started to fiddle with it. She was back after a few minutes, so it was his turn to go to the bathroom. She laid down on the bed and hugged the covers close to her chest, sinking into the mattress. When he entered the bedroom, she was already asleep. He smiled at her, lovingly. He laid next to her, stroking her face.
-"She's so beautiful"- he thought. -"I really am a lucky man."
He smiled and wrapped his arms around Corrina, closing his eyes and letting the peaceful sleep surround him.
-I'm coming! I'm coming!- he shouted, running to the door, putting on a pair of old trousers, in the process. -Jeez! What's so important?!
He flinged the door open, only to reveal a shaking woman.
-Judy? What's wrong? Come in- he said leading her to the kitchen, offering her a chair, which she gladly accepted.
He made her some tea and sat next to her.
-What happened?- he asked, concerned.
She didn't look up from the steaming mug in her hands. Her body was still shaking and she was incapable of making a sound. Tears started to ran down her cheeks.
-Hey, hey...- he took her in his arms, pressing her head to his chest. -Shh... It's all right...
He stroked her hair, rocking back and forth, trying to calm her down. After a while, she stopped sobbing and looked at him.
-I'm s-sorry- she said, her voice filled with sorrow and misery.
-No, no. It's okay. Don't be sorry. Just... Tell me, what happened- he smiled down at her, reassuringly.
-Okay- she nodded. -I was at the hospital and... He-he... He has woken up- her eyes were filled with tears, once again.
-What?!- he nearly jumped in his seat. -What do you mean, he has woken up?!
-What's going on here?- a dishelved woman came into the kitchen.
She was dressed in a pair of undies and a large T-shirt. She looked around the room and saw their guest.
-Judy? What happened?- she asked, quickly standing next to her, putting a hand on her shoulder.
-He has woken up- Bob smiled at her lover.
-That's wonderful!- she grinned, but felt Judy shiver under her touch. -What's wrong, Judy?
-He-he has woken up, bu-but- she started to weep.
-Shh...- Bob hugged her, again. -Calm down a little and tell us, what exactly happened.
The woman took in a few deep breaths and told them the whole story. She was at the hospital, when Mr. Bennett came to his senses. Unfortunately, right after that, he went into cardiac arrest. The doctors were able to bring back a steady heart rhythm but he was in the coma, once again. She said, that the doctors weren't sure, if he'll ever wake up, again.
-Judy...- Corrina leaned foward and hugged her. -It's gonna be all right, I promise- she said quietly, into her hair.
She felt someone tugging at her sleeve. She looked up, meeting a pair of crystal blue eyes.
-Can we talk?- Bob asked, quietly.
She nodded and followed him to the hall.
-What shall we do?- he asked, taking her in his arms.
She put her head on his shoulder and looked at the shaking woman.
-I don't know- she sighed. -I think we should put her to sleep, or take her back to my flat.
-Maybe it's better to leave her here? We can always keep an eye on her- Bob suggested.
Corrina nodded, wrapping her arms tightly around his torso and pecking his neck. He gently kissed her head and hummed, against her hair. She smiled, delicately and slowly stepped back.
-Go. Put a shirt on. I'll take care of her- Corrina whispered, touching his chest, lightly.
He nodded, only now realising he was half naked.
They changed the covers and put Judy in the bed. Corrina gave her clean clothes. They decided to let her sleep, checking in on her, from time to time.
-So...- he sighed, letting his head rest upon her calfs, laying on the sofa.
They were in the living room. It was getting late and the wind blew heavily. She sat on the couch, with her legs bent and hands mindlessly carresing his sculp. He sat right in front of her, staring blankly at the wall.
-We need to wait- she whispered.
He turned his head, slightly and kissed her leg. She smiled, delicately.
-You should get some sleep, Sunshine- he said, with concern.
She only shook her head. He stood up and sat on the couch, as well, taking her into his arms.
-I'll look after her. You need some rest- he kissed her forehead.
-I'm fine- she mumbled into his shirt.
He smiled, running his hand through her hair.
-Bobby?- he heard a faint voice.
-Yes, dear?
-Will you still love me tomorrow?
-Of course, I will- he looked down at the half asleep girl. -Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow and the day after the day after tomorrow... I will love you till the end of time and one day longer.
-I will love you, too- she smiled, drifting off to sleep.
He let the women sleep peacefully. He checked in on the both of them, for the rest of the night.
-"Why is this happening to us?"- he thought, when the morning Sun started to peek through the blinds. -"I thought it was gonna be easier here. New York. The great city, full of opportunities."
He looked around the room. Corrina was asleep on the couch, her head resting on a dark blue cushion. He got it from his mother, when he was leaving home. She always supported him. Said, he was talented. He smiled dolefully.
-"Oh mum, if you only knew..."
He stood up and lit himself a cigarette. Corrina didn't like them. Called them ''cancer sticks". He only laughed at her, reminding her, that everyone smoked, nowadays and it couldn't have such an impact on them. He didn't mind the smoke travelling around his mouth. He kind of liked it. It was similar to a lover's tongue, only less physical. He liked when it fleeted through the air, only to vanish after a few seconds. The smell lingered for a long time, though. He got used to it. He just didn't notice it, anymore. He tried not to smoke at home, because of his love. Of course she smoked, from time to time, but definitely less than him.
-"Maybe she's right?"- he took a long drag. -"She's always right."
He chuckled quietly and looked at her. Her breathing was steady and deep. He came a bit closer, admiring her. He studied her body, like a sculpture. He wanted to carve every detail of her sleeping form into his memory.
-"She's the beauty queen, that owns my soul... How am I even this lucky?"- he smiled, put out the cigarette and sat down, next to her.
He stroked her long curls. He kissed her forehead and nose. He mumbled sweet nothings into her ear. She smiled from time to time, never waking up from her slumber. The Sun started to shine brighter. He stood up and stopped by the window. He looked outside at the twirling snow and grinned, like a child.
-"One day, I'm gonna make her a crown of ice and snow, just to see it melt from our love"- he chuckled at the thought. -"You're one hell of a poet, Bob!"
He turned his head, after hearing a quiet moan, coming from the couch. He slowly made his way back to the sleeping woman.
-Baby?- he whispered, softly. -You okay?
She gave a rather loud sigh and turned, to lay on her back. He smiled down at her and sat on the coffee table, lighting another cigarette.
-"Man, I should really stop smokin', this much..."- he looked around the room, that was now lit by the morning Sun, and smiled broadly. -"It's so good, that you're the same, wherever I go... You light up my paths, to let me see clearly, but now... I've found someone, who's much more dear to me. She makes the darkest nights, bright as a day. She's the one, that leads me through the hardest roads, not letting the shadows get me... I'm sorry Sun, my dear, but I'll always love her more, than I love you, or anything else in the Universe."
The sunlight dimmed for a while, as if the Sun have heard his confession. He smiled again, puffing out a soft cloud of smoke.
-"Life is as ephemeral as the smoke... We should make the most of it, before our time comes"- he frowned, rubbing his eyes with his hand. -"I should lie down, before I'll become another useless philosopher."
He put his cigarette out and lied next to Corrina. She shifted, a bit, hugging him close, laying her head on his chest. He closed his eyes and breathed in her scent.
-I love you...- he whispered, softly.
Soon after these three words were spoken, he has fallen into a shallow sleep, interrupted from time, to time, by a soft moan, coming from his girls lips, or a loud thud of one of the cats, running around the flat.
He felt her turning around, lifting her head and looking at him. He slowly opened his eyes.
-Baby?- his voice was hoarse and he had to cough a little.
-Hey, did you sleep well?- she asked, caressing his cheek.
He chuckled, lightly, shaking his head. She frowned at him, not really knowing what his actions meant. He laughed even more, taking her head in his hands and kissing her hard. She moaned in surprise, returning the kiss. The made out for a while, until they've heard a soft gasp and rushed footsteps.
-Did you hear that?- Bob asked, breaking the kiss and turning his head towards the door.
-Judy!- Corrina gasped, remembering, they weren't alone.
They quickly got up and headed to the kitchen. Judith sat at the table, a bit abashed.
-Hey, did you sleep well?- Corrina smiled at her.
-Y-yes, thank you- the woman hesitantly smiled back.
-I'll make us breakfast- Bob offered and the girls nodded approvingly.
-Thank you for letting me stay here. I didn't want to be alone...- Judy smiled sadly.
They were standing in the hall. Judith wanted to go back to the hospital, to be with her grandfather. They offered to come with her, but she wanted to go alone, said she needed to think.
-You're welcome here, any time- Bob smiled, handing the woman her coat.
-You sure you don't want us to come with you?- Corrina asked, worried.
-Yeah, yeah... Thank you, but I'll be fine- Judith glanced at them, her eyes a bit hazy and absent.
They said their goodbyes and the couple went to the living room. They sat on the floor, turning on the radio, skimming through a few magazines, a friend of theirs brought.
-Look- Corrina handed her lover one of the colourful papers.
-Hmm?- he took it in his slender fingers.
He looked down at the opened page. There was a lovely girl, sitting on a blue stool, in the middle of a forest. She was wearing a colourful dress and a pair of yellow shoes. Her hair was hidden underneath a flowery shawl. Bob looked at Corrina, frowning.
-What about it?- he asked, confused.
-Do you like it?- Corrina layed her head on his shoulder, wrapping her arms around his neck.
-Do I like what?- he was even more confused.
-The stool- she giggled.
He looked at the magazine, again.
-The stool?- he repeated with disbelief.
-Yes- she smiled. -Maybe we should get one?
He turned around, so she could sit in his lap.
-Why?- he wrapped his arms around her.
-Well...- she sighed, touching her forehead to his. -We're living together right now and I hope it'll stay like that, after Mr. Bennett will come back to work. I just thought we might buy, or make, it doesn't matter, new furniture, just for us...
He looked her in the eye, processing everything.
-Do you really want to live with me?- he whispered.
-Do I have a choice?- she answered quietly. -I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.
-Well...- he smiled broadly. -I guess we should start planning everything, then.
-So it means, you want to live together?- she grinned.
He only chuckled, kissing her hard. She gasped, nearly falling off his lap. She returned the kiss with a giggle, quickly replaced by a long moan.
-I love you- he broke the kiss and looked her in the eye. -I want to be with you. Forever.
-I want that, too- she smiled.
They kissed again with a heat and passion of a dying star, that explodes, swallowing planets and smaller stars anywhere near her.
A/N: The song is called „Black is the colour of my true love's hair". Bob probably never sang it (I couldn't find it on his site), but I think it suits the story. ''There are many versions of the tune. It is best known as a tune from the Southern Appalachian Mountains in the U.S. It is probably based on an 18th century English tune. There is a version with a similar tune but different lyrics, Black is the Color of My True Love's Eyes, and an English tune with similar lyrics but a different tune, Dark is the Color of my True Love's Eyes.''- info about the tune, from
Sorry I didn't post for this long! High school is a drag and I don't have spare time, anymore :( Hope the chapter isn't all that bad.
