Chapter 39
Gabriel's POV:
"Mr. White?" A voice called, my eye brow automatically went up at the intruder and an amused smirk crept on my face. I was already walking out of the home office to see for her but here she was on her own. I crossed my arms on my chest, indicating her to go on with whatever she was coming up with that had needed her to address me by my full name and that too, this formally.
"Sorry... Was that a 'come in' that you didn't say?" she said snarkily, already stepping inside. I returned to head towards my desk. Although I'd already called it a night but I still found myself reaching for the file on the table.
I wasn't interested in working now that I was done with it already but seeing her come in had me back to it. Not obviously with any intention of resuming the work but just giving myself and her the illusion that work was what I was more interested in, in the given moment.
I just adored the way she cared for me. It was endearing to see her always stressing over my lifestyle, governing me with her scowls and scrunched face looks. Those mostly validated and showed her concern towards me and I was getting too addicted. It's never irritating to me instead I just wanted to hold her close to me whenever she looked at me like that.
"Sure" I said when she poked her tongue out at me and slipped in the chair. She rolled her eyes at me but started playing with a pen on the table. I kept glancing her from the top the my file, waiting for her to reprimand me on the work I was doing at the time.
"Sometimes I actually wonder why did you even build this giant place? You could've just got yourself a nice comfortable couch in the office building itself" she said, scribbling something on her skin. I placed a note pad in her hand to stop her from scraping her palms through the nib. She had sensitive skin, it mostly always caught a rash at any mild irritation, I'd observed it multiple times but would she ever take care of her? No. I keep these things in my mind for... for her benefit only of course...
That doesn't mean anything, right? Specially not making me'whipped' as Ken likes to put it.
"Oh, I forgot that your office does have comfy couches" she added to her own sentence as she pushed away the offered pad and stood up coming close to me. I held her hands in my grip and found them icy, a frown made way on my face.
"Cold?" I asked as I pulled her closer, wrapped my arms around her and tucked her head under my chin. immediately. She huddled closer to me, pressing her cheek to my chest without any sort of a resistance.
"No shoot Sherlock" she mumbled when I reached for my blazer that I had discarded on the seat and placed it on her, she shrugged it off but had also refused to step out of my arms. Not that I had any problem.
"Take this" she shook her head and chose to scoot closer to me, I brushed the hair from her face, running my finger through the ends.
"Nope, I'd rather choose your sweatshirts over this" she replied to my unasked question.
"But you're cold" I argued at the same time tightening my arms around her providing the warmth that she needed.
"Not formally, just casually cold" she said making me chuckle. She poked me in my ribs making me look down at her.
"What?" I asked smiling in disbelief at her words, she tilted her head towards the door. She wanted to go from here and truly I couldn't wait to leave either. I just wanted to be there with her, wherever she wanted to go.
"Okay" I mumbled, lifting her off her feet and bundling her form to me. She hooped her arms on my neck and rested her head on my shoulder, giving me a lazy smile.
"I'm tired" she said, tracing her fingers from my nose to my chin making me shudder. Her touch does that to me but I contained it making sure she doesn't see me quivering under her touch.
"I can tell" I said, clearing my throat. My sound was huskier than before but I hoped she didn't notice. I carried her to my room because that's where she chose to be.
"Why don't you ever sleep, vampire?" she asked, I placed her on her feet as we reached the closet. She leaned against the wall, looking at me while I remained doing the task in hand.
"I do sleep" I told her whilst rummaging through articles of clothing when I heard her snort.
"When nobody sees, right? ... because secretive" she said laughing to her own joke. She definitely was very sleepy because this was typical sleepy Jenna trait to blabber and laugh on her own speech and like everything of hers, I found it adorable.
I did however turn around to catch a sight of this golden moment and sure enough she was running her finger through one of my winter coats, "Like I said, I am tired." I couldn't resist myself and walked to her standing form and ended up kissing her forehead, looking at her.
"We're not sleeping in a wardrobe, I'm not that cold" she said as she looked around.
"It's warm here though" I offered.
"Can't say no to that" she replied with a slight tilt to her lips.
"Raise your arms" I asked her and her nose scrunched up., the confusion quite clear on her features.
"...and drop your weapons. Whatever you'd say would be used against you." she said yet complied to me by doing as I said.
"What arw vu duvin" came her muffled voice from being stuffed with a cloth against her mouth as I pulled a sweatshirt over her head.
"You needed it, you just said" I said, smiling slightly at her red nose. She huffed but thanked me nonetheless. There couldn't have been a sight better than seeing her in my shirt and swimming in the pooling fabric of it.
"Thanks" she said, completely drowned in my top, the sleeves were too long on her and were hiding her hands. "Can we Eskimo walk?" she asked and I looked at her clueless, racking my mind to come up with anything that was related to it. I believe I always happen to look dumb whenever she asks me of something but instead of charming my way out of it I decided to tell her the truth.
"I don't know how to" I asked and instead of answering she came and placed her feet on mine and grabbed my shoulders, making my eyes widen.
"This way" she said grinning, I returned it in a form of smile. Eskimo walking we both headed out.
"I can't see" she said looking right in my eyes. They were just the perfect chocolate brown and to I was ready to drown in him. Of course she couldn't, she was looking at me while I was guiding the both of us.
"I wont let you fall to get hurt, don't worry" I said sincerely, not being able to pull myself out of her bewitching eyes.
"I know" she said softly. The way she said it reassured me how much she trusted me had my heart yell in jubilation.
"You do?" I asked, I couldn't hold myself back as I pressed her back to the wall while I kept gazing at her. Her hair framed her face giving her the look of utter innocence.
"Mhmm" she responded as I leaned closer and her hands tightened around me owing to give her a control but her hold makes me lose mine.
"What are you looking at?" my breath was fanning her face but I couldn't stop looking at her, my hands skidded down her waist and they effectively had her release a shaky breath.
"You're beautiful" I mumbled to her, dazed by her.
"Oh, tell me something I don't already know" she gulped. She was all red in the face, clearly informing me of the emotions she was feeling inside.
"I'll come up with something when you'd stop blushing whenever I give you compliments" I said and her blush intensified making me smile.
"I don't blush" she said, looking down.
"Do you not, now?" I asked as spoke against her lips. Her reply was a sharp intake of breath.
"Gorgeous" I muttered as I stole a kiss from her lips. She'd shut her eyes close and her ragged breathing was doing things to me.
"Gabriel?" she called out in a small voice making me want to groan at the sound of it.
"Hmm?" I replied as I placed a kiss at her jaw making her breath hitch.
"I know it's silly to admit to it but if you come any closer, I might start blurting out random statements" she admitted as a smile marred my face, knowing all too well that it was coming although it was surprising to know that she agreed to it.
"Trust me, I know" I said nuzzling my face in her neck and pressing a soft kiss there, "I am waiting for them to come" And no sooner they did.
"If you want to have your elastic band lasting longer. Keep the rubber bands in the fridge" she said randomly.
"Noted" I chuckled, dragging my nose from the hollow of her throat the base of her chin.
"Chalk is edible" she said sucking in a quick breath.
"It is?" I asked, my voice somehow inched being seductive and I didn't bother working on it because it was seemingly doing the game, "Good to know"
"An ostrich eye is bigger than it's brain" she said.
"So is yours"
"What?" she said, abashed. She was triggered and a frown incapacitated her face and I wanted to smack my head against the wall. I've got her angry and now her face was red for a very different reason but I still pecked her pout.
"I was here to get you to sleep but I am pretty sure you've forgotten about that" she huffed at my statement. She raised her hand to tuck her hair behind her ear.
"What's on you hand?" I asked her, there was an ink patch on her hand. It could be from the pen game she was playing whilst we were in the office.
"You" she said, her mood still slightly off from the last jab I'd given unintentionally.
"Me?" I asked holding her hand to see her palm.
"Angry bird" she said, grinning.
"Yeah sure" I said, shaking my head as I lifted her and placed her on the bed. Wrapping her in the duvet, I stepped back and she grabbed at my hand.
"Where are you going?" I didn't have any answer. She pushed the sheets to one side, "cuddle me, I'm cold" And could I ever say no to that? I don't think so!
"Whatever you want, beautiful" I said but she snuggled close to me, resting her head on my chest.
We remained silent where I assumed that she had fallen asleep but then felt her fingers tracing patterns on my chest. I kissed her head and worded the question that was running in my mind.
"Paraiso, what if I'm not telling you something... a secret?" I asked, anticipating her reply.
"It's your wish Gabriel. I will not force you into telling me anything you don't want to unless it's about me" she said.
"About you?" I probed, already dreading where it was going.
She lifted her head slightly and looked at me, "Yeah like, Sorry Jenna I accidentally ate the nutella you kept hidden because I was craving it. So you see how it's important for me to know about it. Since it's so clearly about me"
"Got it!" I said and she returned to her act.
"Hey, Gabriel?" she asked after a while. I hummed, waiting for her to continue.
"Are you really a vampire?" she asked.
"A very interesting question?" I responded and scoffed.
"Answer me" she said encouragingly. Her voice had genuine concern making me feel offended funnily. Did she actually believe I was one? Or was she too good at playing serious?
"Not that I know of, why?" I said amused.
"Because... I hardly see you sleep" she complained, placing her chin on my chest and looking at me with the beautiful eyes of hers.
"I'm usually working" I reasoned although I just avoided it because it always directed me towards thoughts I didn't want to see. Recently, I just want to do everything that is routine but hadn't been to me.
"Well, so let's not work today. I'll help you sleep?" she said.
"How- oh!" her soft hand was placed on my eyes.
"Close your eyes, I'll tell you a story" she said.
"I-" I interrupted when she placed her other finger on my lips, I was lost - really I was.
"Shh..." and the way I could hear her soothing voice and soft words. They were giving me the impression of taking me to a place that brought me peace. Like sand under my feet and the breeze of the sea.
Serenity...
Only that the peace was more a person to me... than any place could ever be.

"The person who's doing all this is among you. They have all the information of Ms. Stephen's whereabouts. They also happen to be conspiring some plan on a larger scale that is possibly keeping them off the charts these days. Do you happen to know if someone is slacking off and avoiding interactions?" Stan informed and my fists clenched.
Also, as the pattern of everything suggest, they do happen to be knowing extremely personal information. The few links that had been matched are connecting to the... the-" he hesitated.
"Say it!" I boomed.
"...Mafia. But we're not too sure yet, sir. We did happen to see shady activities going around the block but we can't actually accuse on the basis of no solid proof. The security around Ms. Cassie Calder's house has been tightened till Ms. Stephen's stay there.
Our cars are following her, we've got all directions covered. Also, there happens to be this watch that was dropped with the parcel someday accidentally. We've sent it to run tests for DNA but it's a designer collection and there are only a few pieces of those available so it'll be easier to trace."
"Designer collection?" I asked and the answer to everything seemed to be clear as day in my mind.
"Yeah, a recent launch. Advertised on magazines and billboards only as of yet" Stan said. "There's a huge possibility that the security surveillance of this building is breached too since the mule is close and happens to know almost everything. We're trying to locate the parcel that we've received today, it happened to have a loophole, it'll give us information."
"I want her safe and I want this done and over with" I said, my jaw was set and the rage I was feeling was unreal. It was quite visible of what was happening and there is no way I'd let this person who'd put my Jenna in trouble breathe even a breath of air with peace.
***
"So how long has this been going on?" I said bursting through the door and grabbing him by his collar. The crowd next to him silenced to a whisper at my intrusion and gasps resounded the whole room. Everyone was shit scared of my wrath and they should be.
Ken's eyes were wide as he looked at me when I clutched his shirt in a grip that was threatening. He looked at me and there was a sliver of fear that sparked his eyes when he saw me. He gulped looking around, hoping that no one had seen what was happening.
"You've been snitching behind my back. What good did it bring you?" I said in a voice that was menacing and sure it did the work as people started clearing up the room and leaving us to be. Some confidence they had.
"Gabriel, you-" he hesitated when I pushed him hard against the door, feeling his collar to the back of his throat, making him cough.
"I know, Ken. I. Know. Every. Fucking. Thing" I said inching closer to him. He looked at me as though he didn't know what I was talking about but there was a certain panic that had started filling in, confirming that he realized what it was based on.
"So this means..." he started, squaring his shoulders and standing up straighter with a smug smile on his lips. The previous display of fear on his face was washed away by the confidence that now over took it.
"Yes, I know everything" I stated, my jaw set so tight it pained my temporal region.
"Where's your watch, Ken?" I asked, crossing my arms looking around the room. I walked towards the table before he could and started shuffling at the contents of his desk.
"I don't wear the watch you give me everywhere, Gabriel" he said, walking towards his seat and authoritatively sitting on it, ignoring my search of the items on the table. I was furious at his actions but I also couldn't give up on the opportunity to do a quick search.
"But you haven't been taking it off from as long as you've got it" I said distracted, the slight panic started getting to bubble in me but I counseled myself to focus on work.
"Don't you thing its too late now?" he asked sipping through some cup that was on his table aggravating me even more.
"I was playing it right under your nose and you never figured it out" he added, chuckling sarcastically, I clenched my jaw. I didn't bother replying to him and continued with my search. I'd deal with him later, I was sure of it and the way my anger was blowing up I knew it wouldn't end satisfactorily.
"Well, I'm surprised you never found out" she came rounding the table and running his hand on the couch where he then lied like some royalty. He really should remember his face now, it wouldn't look the same.
"Not appearing at her house, knowing everything. Leaking her whereabouts, getting her gifts. Ahh, that was some fun shit to do. Took you way long to figure out, considering that you're some genius shit, aren't you?" he asked, scoffing.
My head snapped towards him and he smirked at me. He stood up and walked towards me and no sooner a fist came flying towards me out of nowhere. I was taken off guard and couldn't duck.
"I always wanted this" he said, throwing a small gadget on the table. It was disabled now and remained lying on he surface and I looked at him blankly.
It was a microphone that was now turned off.
"Punching me was so extra" I said, rolling my eyes at him.
"Yeah, it was fun though" he said innocently.
"Let me have my share of fun then?" I said raising my fist which he dodged. Placing the back of my hand on my nose that had blood dripping off it, I took the small devise in my hand.
"It was a joke, don't get serious" he said, crisscrossing on the table. "This microphone was on the couch" he told me.
"That means you had disabled it but you had to add a punch" I said, not understanding him. When I came marching in, I had a feeling that we were being monitored. Ken was obviously being put into this whole situation to make my attention divert to him.
We had to give an impression that we had fallen into whatever trap was being set because we have to give the prey the illusion of being let go before a solid position is searched for the scavenge.
Ken wasn't told of it before but he always happens to catch up with the scenarios like these and with all the hints and pieces I was receiving it sure felt like a well planned situation to get Ken in it as the messiest.
"To make it look realistic" he said. They must obviously want to see if their plan was going according to the plan which is why it was well expected to find a searching apparatus at Ken's office and sure enough there was.
My PI team was being tricked by them, they believed that they are manipulating my team to reach to the clues they're purposely dropping. What they don't know is, I have a network of those running. I anticipate their next move before they even think of it..
They knew that if I were given the cards that I was, my attention would go straight to Ken and I would confront him and at the time, obviously at his office. They planted a microphone to affirm that their plan was going right.
Only that it wasn't! Two can play this game...
"How was my acting?" he asked, trying to make the environment cheerful but failing at it. There was a tension in the air. He cared about Jenna a lot and no proof was needed for it.
"They're framing you" I deadpanned.
"I realized that" he said blankly. His face showed that he had an idea about this too, probably before I did. He had seen this coming and now he was playing like he actually was involved in it to trick them into questioning their own scheme.
"When?" I asked.
"I don't know how long had this microphone been here. Anyway, I'll link this to the detective team, let's see where this takes us to" he said, running a hand through his beard. I nodded and headed towards the door when I heard him laugh at me.
"So your face shows she's pissed at you" he said, I picked up a book from the shelf close to the door and threw it behind me, he obviously caught it
"Yeah, thanks" I responded emotionlessly.
"Need my help?" he asked, laughing like a maniac.
"Fuck you!"
***
I shouldn't have but I knew it was important for me to see her and that's what I did when I glanced inside the glass door of her office. She was sat concentrating at some work on the computer.
Her eyes drifted from the screen and landed on me and I felt my heart jump. Her eyes narrowed at my face. I must've forgotten to wipe off the blood or the punch might've left a bruise. Weirdly enough, I was thankful at being beaten up... if it had her notice it, despite the circumstances.
This isn't simping.
Before she could say anything, Cassie walked passed me uttering a small greeting and lightly side eyed me. She mustn't be in favor of this little exchange between Jenna and I. Not like I care but her look made Jenna realize something and she lowered her head, making my heart drop.
I closed my eyes slightly and walked to my room. What I didn't know was that I'd be given the worst surprise ever when I heard a voice.
"Gabriel" he said and I felt like all breath had escaped me and I was hit with a sledgehammer. I was blank and couldn't believe what was happening.
"Son-" he reached out and I immediately flinched back in a heartbeat not understanding the sight in front of me. I squared my shoulders, mustering courage for the showdown that was promising to be open.
"Don't!" I said with a hard voice, inside I was plainly in shock on seeing him there and the audacity of him to stand here in front of me in a place that acted like a shield to me when he left me in the warzone had me weak. This was an area that kept me in it's cave when there were daggers aiming to tear me.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" I screamed, not being able to control myself. I was pushing his topic so behind that he came around standing in front me, haunting me. All the memories I was dreading were hitting me full face with a strong force.
"Gabriel-" he said, his own voice shaking but I knew all too well that these were his theatrics. I would never fall for those.
"Who has even let you in?" I was more of a morbid animal now, I was fuming. I had to use the anger to overcome the pain that was ebbing my soul for it was excrutiating.
"Listen t-" he tried but my summoned anger was enough to overcome all the jerkiness in emotions I felt. What was he doing here after all these years? I understood that the first interaction was unplanned and accidental but now?
"Your criminal activities hadn't done for you enough that you're back for more?" I threw a jab and it did the right when he winced, it gave a satisfaction I didn't know I needed.
"Still breaking through places" I added. My hands were fisting and I couldn't even control myself. I had Mia's face flashing in front of my eyes. When they covered her with that sheet, her screams.
I shut my eyes close. I knew I couldn't risk revisiting the memories especially when Jenna wasn't around me, to hold me. To stay by me...
"Hear me out" he wasn't giving up on his efforts while I was fighting to not think of the scars in my soul. To not feel the mind numbing pain they bring just as someone even scratches the surface of the wound.
"Get the fuck away from here" I screamed throwing a file away and he inched towards me to touch me. I knew it wasn't long before I would slip into the dark abyss. Jenna had pulled me out of there, I don't wish to return to the same dark.
"Don't. Fucking. Touch. Me" I seethed. I was wondering if he liked to see me break and I was sure he did. I wouldn't give him the satisfaction though, he deserved nothing.
"Don't do this to Jenna" he said finally hitting me in my weakness. I looked at him in shock and scoffed at his reverse psychology that he was using on me.
"Don't you fucking get her in this" I turned around facing him. He needed to know that I wasn't the same Gabriel who had seen Mia suffer and stayed quite, Jenna would never feel any pain. Come who may,
"I don't want to" he said, raising his hands in surrender, seemingly terrified of my anger.
"She's already in so much mess" I said quietly, thinking about my girl and the unwanted hurt she's feeling. He was responsible, I knew he was. Everything bad in my life was because of him, he ruined everything for me and now he was ruining Jenna.
"It's you isn't it. You were the mafia, right?" I said automatically as the dots aligned. Why hadn't I thought of this before, it was him of course. The core of all these problems.
"I wont hurt her" he said offended. I sneered at him. He believed I would trust him, he can get his own daughter-. Shutting my eyes close, I stopped myself from thinking about it but my mouth didn't comply.
"Exactly how-" I was cut off from completing the aweful sentence
"I didn't kill Mia" he claimed and the fake pain that he added to his voice. His eyes were glazed with a sheen that I rolled my eyes at.
"Don't even say her name" I said stepping towards him. He didn't deserve ever be able to say her name. Mia shouldn't have been linked with him at all.
"I know you are upset with me" he said and I nearly laughed in disbelief.
"Upset?" I asked, rewording it in my mind. Does he still think I'm in my rebellious teen phase that he would term me into being upset.
"Listen to me, Gabriel" he continued.
"You are completely deluded" I said, looking here and there not quite believing anything happening around me.
"I want you to talk to me" he insisted and I was marveling the stubbornness and the confidence he had. What did he take me as?
"The gall you have to show up here and expect me to talk" at this point I was only questioning his and mine sanity. One of us had definitely lost it, it showed.
"I don't want to make a scene here. Jenna is already here and she shouldn't be dragged into more of your shit than you've already put her in. I wont hesitate to call security on you" I was done playing. I had nothing more to say and I didn't want to tolerate him in front of my eyes anymore.
"I know you don't trust me" he added when I walked towards the door.
"Trust?! What the fuck are you high on to even bring that word up" I asked, facing him. I was yelling at this point and I didn't care. "Just go" I said.
"So you wont go?" he was frozen to his place with his eyes just staring at me.
"The Mafia is after Jenna" he said without any emotion, my hand paused midway from where it was reaching to call the security
"Mind elaborating" I said, stabilizing my voice to not make it seem to have any emotion in it.
"I know you're worried about her" he said making my blood boil. What was he trying to do, play the Jenna card on me?
"Cut the crap and tell me what you know. It's because of you, isn't it?" I asked, not even paying heed to the exploding anger in me. He remained silent
"Oh for fucks sake say something, Werent you done killing one that now..." he shut his eyes, looking away. I didn't complete my statement for the pain it brought to me didn't permit me to.
"What have you done to her that she gets nightmares?" I asked him, remembering about Jenna's nightmares.
"She's scared of the dark" I added, placing things in my mind.
"Is she the only one you would talk about?" he asked, disturbing my interrogation
"You're not worth speaking to. Don't tempt me, answer me. Who's after her?" I said with clenched teeth.
"How are you, Gabriel?" he asked. Is he fucking nuts?
"Jenna respects you a lot and I, her. Don't test me" I said and only I knew how I controlling myself.
"She's the only family I have left, Gabriel" he said.
"She's my family" I said and it silenced him.
"For her, please listen to me" he said and I looked at him without saying a word.
"Nothing any of us can do would save her. They want to kill her"
