On December 11th, 2009, Disney came out with a new movie, Princess and The Frog. The movie tells the story of Tiana, a waitress from New Orleans who dreams of getting her own restaurant one day, a dream she shared with her father. She accidentally gets turned into a frog by Prince Naveen of Maldonia, who makes a deal with Dr. Facilier, a voodoo witch doctor, that does not go the way Naveen thought it would. The two humans turned frogs go on an adventure through the Bayeuo facing hunters, the shadows, and making new friends along the way, In the end of the movie, with the help of Tiana's best friend, Charlotte La Bouff, Tiana and Naveen is turned back human and Tiana still gets her restautrant . This is why Charlotte is an important character to Tiana's story. Charlotte and Tiana have a solid friendship because when they were little girls, the scene at mascarde ball, and how they look out for each other.

When the two were growing up, they were the best of friends. This friendship did not change with age but only got stronger. In the time that the movie is set, New Orleans in the 1920s, segeration was the norm. Segeration was the seperation of the white and black races. There were differnet buses for the whites and the blacks, different public restrooms, differnet everything. This, of course, did not matter to Charlotte or Tiana. They were so close that the opening scene of the movie shows Charlotte and Tiana in Charlotte's room listening to Eudora, Tiana's mother, telling them a story about the Frog Prince. This shows how strong their friendship is because neither girl was letting how society is and just stays friends throughout the years, despite their very clearly different upbrings. Charlotte's father was a very rich man who bought her anything she wanted and Tiana lived in a much smaller house with her parents.

During the scene of the masqudare ball, Tiana falls into the table of her bengins and gets her dress all dirty. Charlotte who came over to tell to Tiana about Prince Naveen, who she happened to be dancing with in the previous scene, and sees her best friend all dirty and her first thought is to help Tiana get cleaned off and into a new dress. This is once again showing how strong their friendship is because Charlotte's first thought was to help her friend in need, rather than go back to dancing with the prince of her dreams. In Charlotte's room, when Tiana comes out in a beautiful light blue princess dress, Charlotte immediaetly tells her how pretty she looks, saying she looks "as pretty as mangnolia in May"(Musker and Clements, 21:22-21:25). Charlotte places a crown on her head. This is showing the strength of their friendship because Charlotte knew what to say to Tiana to make her feel slightly better about what had transpired earlier.

Throughout the movie, it shows so many moments of Tiana and Charlotte looking out for each other. Here are just a few. Charlotte giving Tiana more money than she needed to for her beignets for the masquerade ball, that is enough for Tiana to get the downpayment for her restaurant. Tiana comforting Charlotte when Prince Naveen, who was really Lawernce in disguise as Prince Naveen, is late to the masquerade ball. Charlotte giving Tiana a replacement costume after hers gets really dirty after Tiana collides with a table full of foods and drinks. Charlotte telling her that she can not believe both of them are getting their dreams from when they were younger, Charlotte dreamed of marrying a prince, she believed Prince Naveen was going to propose to her soon, and Tiana dreamed of opening a restaurant with her dad, but after her father dies, she dreams of getting the restuarant in honor of her dad's dream.

Some people might think that Tiana and Charlotte's friendship is not a great one and one young girls should model their friendships after. These critics might say that given that Charlotte having a lot of money without seemingly helping Tiana and her family might bring into question her commitment to helping her friend get her dream restaurant, which is a run-down sugar mill that will require more money to fix up. However, it is unclear whether or not Charlotte did not do this or had the funds to do this. Just because her dad was a rich man, does not mean that Charlotte had the disposable income to give to Tiana or a hard-working girl like Tiana would take Charlotte's money. Tiana seems like the type of person to not take an handouts as in evidence in the song "When We're Human", when she explains to Louis, a talking and trumpting playing gator, and Prince Naveen, that her dad taught her the only way to get what you want in this world is through hard work.

The significance to Tiana being the main character of the story is it is a part of Disney putting more princesses of colour as the heroines of their stories rather than having white princesses who need saving. This means that little girls who are not white can see themselves in the princesses that they are watching on the screen. Along with that, they are seeing princesses who are taking control of their stories and lives. Tiana works two jobs to save up for her restaurant and at the end achieves her dream of getting her restaurant. Charlotte is an important character to Tiana's story but only so far as her best friend and not the white princess who gets the prince in the end. Charlotte's encouragement in Tiana's dream and how she was willing to give up the prince she had always wanted because he fell in love with her best friend instead, proves that she was always there for Tiana. Tiana, giving Charlotte words of encouragement when Prince Naveen was late to the ball, shows how she was there for Charlotte. In the end, the friendship shown between Charlotte and Tiana in The Princess and The Frog is a strong and solid friendship that should be what all female friendship should be modelled after.
