10. Our Story
"You lied to me," I breathed out. Even the sight of Leo standing before me had my mind racing. It definitely didn't feel like it used to when it was just Leo and me, but the unresolved feelings had begun to stir again.
Leo shook his head and stepped towards me. I held my ground and didn't back away, but made damn sure he didn't get too close.
"I never lied to you, Macey."
"Well you sure as hell didn't tell me the truth! You're a wolf?" I still couldn't wrap my head around it.
Leo was a beast. A monster. My Leo was one of them.
"Macey, why are you here? How did you get here?" Leo questioned, looking stunned by my presence as well.
"Shouldn't you know? You are Third In Command, are you not?" I growled back. I was surprised at my aggressiveness towards my only teenage love.
"I am," Leo sighed, "but I didn't go with the men on the hunt for you. I stayed behind to watch over the pack women and children."
"Jackman. Your last name is Jackman?"
"Yes."
"You did lie to us. You lied to me and you lied to Kane," I accused, now stepping further away from Leo's presence. I got a sick feeling in my stomach.
"Macey, I'm sorry! I was falling in love with you, Macey, I didn't think that I would have been able to keep you if you knew what I am. Now we know that if I would have told you, your family would have killed me on the spot." Leo had a point there. But he didn't know we were hunters. Even if him lying had saved his life, he still had no way of knowing that we were hunters.
"You left, Leo. Why did you leave?" I could feel the emotion rising in me.
"I believed your dad was getting suspicious of me. I didn't know that you and your brother were hunters, but I had suspicions about your father. He acted towards me like I had something to hide, which I did."
"You didn't even say goodbye to me. You just left. You never tried to contact me!" I was angry again. "Did you ever consider how awful I felt after that?"
"I know, Macey. I'm so sorry." Leo reached out to me and I let him. I let him pull me into a tight, intimate hug that I tried to enjoy. I enjoyed the comfort, but not the comforter. Leo didn't give me sparks.
"Why don't I feel the same way around you anymore?" I sniffled, holding onto Leo even tighter. I wanted to feel how I had felt. I wanted the butterflies in my stomach that I had always gotten when hugging Leo.
"You found your mate. Alpha Chase marked you and now you can feel the mate bond with him," Leo explained.
I clenched my eyes shut and refused to unwrap my arms from around Leo's waist.
"You got taller," I mumbled. Leo chuckled softly and I felt his chin tap the top of my head while he nodded. "You also got more muscle. I don't think I could beat you up anymore."
"Macey, I've missed you," Leo sighed. He stepped back and held me at arms length. A frown replaced his smile. "But you've got Alpha Chase now, and he's got you. As much as I wish you were my mate, you aren't."
"When the pack got to my house, I sent a signal to my brother through my phone. It meant that I was in trouble and needed help. I'm not sure if he got it, but if he did, then he's looking for me. Is there any way you can contact him and tell him that I'm okay?" I requested. I didn't want Kane out there with a wild mind, not knowing what had become of his baby sister. We had already lost Mom and Dad and he didn't need anymore turmoil in his thoughts.
"Of course, Macey."
"Why did you lie to Chase about how we met and certain parts of our relationship? That's not how it went," I mentioned.
Leo smiled brightly and let out a soft chuckle. "I didn't want him to behead me from anger. There are certain things he doesn't need to know about our story, Macey."
"Oh." I blushed. Of course. "Okay."
"I'd also appreciate it if you didn't inform him about how infatuated with each other we were," Leo smirked, sending a quick wink my way.
"Oh don't you worry. I'll tell him all about your infatuation with my tongue," I teased back, smiling at the memory of just how much of our time together we spent just kissing.
Leo let out another laugh, a wide smile gracing his features. He sure grew up and he grew up nicely. "I've missed you, Macey. I've missed us."
I smiled back, ignoring the thoughts of Chase rampaging my mind. "I've missed us too, Leo."
We stood there for a few moments and I couldn't seem to take my gaze off of Leo's. His eyes were always dull to me, but his smile made up for it. It was sparkling and kind. His entire demeanor was softer than it probably should have been for a wolf. Then, I thought about how Third In Command was also Head Warrior.
I couldn't stop the giggle that slipped past my lips.
"What's so funny?" Leo inquired.
"Just the thought of you as Head Warrior to a werewolf pack. You are too much of a softy to be a warrior," I taunted, poking the muscle on his bicep with my fingernail.
"I'm tougher than I look, Mace," Leo responded with a slight pout. It made another laugh escape my mouth. While I smiled up at my old child hood sweet heart and ex-boyfriend, Leo frowned down at me.
"You should have fought harder, Macey. It's not good that they got you," Leo muttered, his voice dropping down to almost a whisper.
"What do you mean?" I tried to bite back the anger I got from him saying I should have fought better against my kidnapper. I knew that and I kicked myself for it, but it was over and done with. I'll just have to focus on escaping now.
"Your brother will search for you. You know Kane won't settle for me assuring him you're okay. He will want to know where you are and who you are with. He'll want to talk to you." Leo didn't need to explain all of this to me. I knew my brother and I knew that Leo was right. Kane wasn't just going to let me disappear when I had sent out that signal call. I would need to trick him into believing I was fine and to leave me be.
"Can't you tell him that I ran into you and...I don't know! Tell him I saw you and got overwhelmed from the past and ran off for a few days. The signal was a false alarm. Can you do that?"
Leo sighed, looking hesitant. I picked up on the nervousness he suddenly showed and I grabbed onto his arm. "Leo-"
"Time's up." The office door slammed open, making me jump and tighten my hand. Leo bowed his head and took a step away from me like we hadn't shared the past ten minutes reminiscing and comforting each other.
When I turned my head to look at the tensed Alpha who had interrupted me, I practically started drooling.
Chase's eyes were swirling from their intense green to a obsidian color. It was frightening, but so intriguing to me. His hair was sticking up in random places and it looked like it had been tugged and pulled on. His clothes were slightly wrinkled even. In other words, he looked like a hot mess. A sexy hot mess.
Damn, he's a fine looking wolf.
The scowl on Chase's lips twitched and soon he was smiling slightly. He shook his head and started to chew on his bottom lip like he always did. "Jackman, you are dismissed."
"Yes, Alpha," Leo acknowledged, leaving the room with just a discreet glance in my direction.
Boy, he sure grew into a fine man himself.
"Macey!" Chase barked, looking at me with appalled anger. I shot my own eyes to him.
"What?" Confusion. So much confusion.
"Nothing. Nevermind," Chase sighed, shaking his head in an exasperated way that made me want to laugh. He just looked exhausted. Honestly, he didn't even look bad even now. His eyes were tired and slightly furrowed, yet he was still incredibly handsome.
Thank God, he can't read my thoughts.
"What did you talk to Jackman about?" Chase asked. I could see the amusement in his eyes and I almost went insane. I swear, this Alpha had the most irregular mood swings.
"That is confidential," I answered, plopping down into the chair that Blake had occupied before.
"I am your mate, Macey. I deserve to know," Chase argued.
"But as a human I don't deserve my own privacy? Just because you are my so called 'mate' that does not mean that I don't have my own rights as well. I don't deserve to choose who I have a life with?" That last comment seemed to really trigger something inside of Chase.
He tensed up even more and a low growl vibrated in his body. I could see his hands curl into fists. He clenched his eyes shut. "Don't ever say anything like that ever again. Please."
The begging tone in his voice had me freezing, but the pained expression he also wore had my heart beating rapidly. He seemed physically in pain at the moment and he let out another growl. "God, why did it end up like this?" Chase muttered. I could barely here what he said, but the fact that I had stood up and stepped closer aloud me to hear word and every small growl.
"Chase, are you okay?"
"No!" His shout made me jump back, eyes wide and shocked. I didn't know what was going on and I was scared to find out. "Everytime you say something like that, anything along the lines of not wanting me, it hurts. It damn hurts, Macey, and I'm tired of it! No mate goes through this and I hate it."
"Chase-"
"Just shut up," Chase whispered, shaking his head and standing up. He opened his eyes and they looked dead. "I'm not letting you go Macey. I'm not going to let you leave me because I refuse to be alone again. I will wait as long as I have to for you to accept me, but just do not speak another word about not wanting me. I don't know how I will react to it."
Before I could say another word, Chase was gone. He left the office and left me there by myself to register all he had said.
Well, I didn't want to think about it. I didn't want any thoughts in my head that may lead to feeling guilt at escaping this place soon, so I walked out of the office as well. I travelled the pack house for anything that could take my mind off of what was actually going on.
I didn't want any thoughts of the Alpha in my mind.

Rounding a corner, I came face to face with none other than Penelope. Her hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail and she immediately bowed her head. "Luna."
"It's Macey," I scowled, shutting out the thoughts of a connection with the pack.
"Yes, of course," Penelope smiled kindly at me. She didn't really deserve for me to be short or snappy with her, but I didn't want to make a friend hear. I didn't have friends, and I certainly didn't want to break that habit with a wolf.
"Excuse me." I tried to excuse myself and step past her, only for Mark to come walking up behind Penelope, stalking straight for me.
"Luna, the Alpha has told me that you are to stay accompanied by either Penelope or myself for the time being," Mark stated. He sounded so formal and that part I liked about him. All business.
"What else did he tell you," I muttered sarcastically, wanting to roll my eyes at how many orders Chase seemed to have in place here.
"Funny you should ask that," Mark smirked, "You are not to be seen or left alone with Third In Command Leo Jackman until the Alpha states otherwise and Beta Blake may only be in your presence whenever you have a third party with you."
A thought clicked into my head. All of the guards seemed to be men, yet Chase seemed to have a knack for banning me from seeing them. Blake had already been banned from my presence for a mere misunderstanding and Leo was for us having a past. What company would I have if I just got myself into the same situation with any and all guards that Chase posted to me?
"Where is Chase?" I inquired, adding a longing look to my features. At least, I hoped it came off as longing and not creepy.
Mark narrowed his eyes at me before answering. "He is in the fields with the pack. They are discussing which men could rightfully hold the Third In Command title."
"But Leo already has that title," I interrupted, my voice coming out wary.
Mark scowled at me. "It seems you are getting a lot of people demoted from their titles lately."
No. No matter how badly I wanted out of here, I still didn't like how Chase was treating his pack. Blake was worthy of the Beta title just like Leo had gained his title. Due to my own actions and past, they were being punished. It wasn't fair to them and I refused to leave here with their reputation on my hands. Leo was a friend and he deserved better than that.
"Take me to him," I ordered.
