Chapter 27: Trial and Error

Eita's POV

The next day, I stood in front of the counter as I was getting myself a glass of water. I was really tired and my mind was blank. As I raised the glass to my lips, I heard someone say my name. "Eita?"

I flinched and accidentally dropped the glass, making it shatter when it hit the floor. I turned around to see that it was Konan who called me. "I'm sorry. I'll clean this up." I said, tending to the mess.

"I'll help you. It's my fault, anyway. I shouldn't have startled you." Konan apologized as she walked over to me. "No, it's fine. Really." I insisted. I went to pick up a broken piece of glass, but I cut my finger when I attempted to pick it up.

"Shit!" I cursed, yanking my hand away. "Are you okay?" Konan asked as she crouched down beside me. "It's just a small cut. Nothing serious. I'll be fine." I said.

"Let me see."

"I said, I'm fine!"

Konan was taken back by my tone and I looked at her a bit surprised by my tone myself. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap at you. I'll clean up the mess." I apologized, and started cleaning up the broken glass. "Eita," Konan said, placing her hand over my mine. "Are you okay?"

"Yes." I answered. "Your face is pale, and you look like you haven't slept in days." She mentioned. "Konan, I promise you I'm fine." I said, giving her a reassuring smile. But she was still giving me a worried look.

She raised her hand and placed it over my head to check if I had a fever. "I'm fine," I said, moving my head away. "I appreciate your concern. Please excuse me."

I went back to cleaning up the broken glass, then threw them in the trash. I went to exit the base until I bumped into Hidan. "Hey, watch where you're going, will ya?" He yelled at me. "You're the one who bumped into me, dumbass!" I yelled back.

"I dare you to say that again, you damn kid!" Hidan said, grabbing the front of my cloak.

"I'll gladly say it a thousand times, you little piss-ant!"

"You wanna go, Shingeru?!"

"Any time, shithead!"

"That's it! You're dead!"

"Not unless I kill you first!"

"Eita."

I turned my head as Itachi stood there, looking unamused at the whole situation. "That's enough. Leave Hidan alone." He said. "But he started it! And I'm about to finish it!" I informed.

"Be the bigger man. Or do I have to remind you of your behavior?" Itachi said, slightly frowning at me. I tensed up before muttering, "Tch."

"I'm sorry for bumping into you, Hidan," I mumbled to Hidan as my hair covered my eyes. "I'm going to my room."

I turned around and quickly walked away. "Wow. I've never seen Eita walk away from a fight before. Or apologize, un." I heard Deidara say. "Looks like you have him on leash now, huh, Itachi?" Kisame said, impressed.

When I got to my room, I closed the door. I went into the bathroom and took a shower, letting the hot water splash on my face. After my shower, I got dressed in some comfortable clothes, then headed into the hallway, walking past Pein's office.

I heard him talking with Itachi, so I creeped up against the door and eavesdropped on the conversation.

"Eita's attitude seems to have withered down a bit. Looks like whatever you're doing is working."

"I appreciate the compliment, Leader."

"Not only that, but his behavior has changed a bit as well. Nice job, Itachi. Now, if only we can get him to follow orders when given a mission."

"That shouldn't be a problem."

"Well, whatever you're doing, keep it up."

"Yes, sir."

I frowned and left the area, walking down the hall. 'So Pein put Itachi up to this. Only so I can stop acting like an ass towards everyone. Well, played.' I thought.

"That son of a bitch. I'll find a way to get them back. Just you wait." I mumbled to myself.

I waited until everyone was asleep and snuck my way into Pein's office. I noticed there was another door on my left, so I can only assume that's where is bedroom is. Which means I have to be quiet.

"He's got to have something to have something he doesn't want anyone to see." I whispered as I started looking through his drawers. I was looking for something I can use against Pein and Itachi. After I'm done here, I'll go to Itachi's room and use whatever I can find against him.

"What do you think you're doing here at this hour?"

My heart nearly jumped when I heard that, but when I looked towards the door to see that it was just Itachi, I was pretty relieved because I thought it was Pein. "You know you're not allowed in here unless you're summoned." Itachi reminded me.

"You can cut the bullshit now, Uchiha. I know Pein put you up to this, so you can stop all this." I said. For some reason, that made him smirk. "You think I was doing that for Pein? I was doing it because I wanted to." He said.

"Yeah, for sure." I said, rolling my eyes. "Do you know how bad this situation would look for you if Pein caught you in his office without permission?" Itachi asked. "Yeah, yeah. I'll face the consequences. I've heard it all before." I said.

"Then, you know what I'm going to do to you,"

I turned around and I felt my heart sink in dread when I saw Pein standing by the other door. "You better have a good explanation for yourself, Eita." Pein said, angrily. I've seen what Pein can do with his powers, but what can he do with them when he's angry?

"Well? I'm waiting." Pein said. I honestly didn't have a good excuse at the moment, so I think it's safe to say that I'm pretty much screwed.

No! I shouldn't chicken out now! I should confront him about the things Itachi has done to me on his order! "I was in here because-!"

"Because he wasn't sure what he was doing." Itachi interrupted. "Huh?" I looked at him in confusion. "Eita hasn't been feeling well lately. Not to mention, he's been known to sleepwalk from time to time, so it's possible he wandered in here in his sleep by mistake." He lied to Pein.

I looked at Pein to see his reaction. He still looked angry, but he also looked like he was believing Itachi's story. He glanced over at the open drawers from his desk, then at me. "Is there a reason why you've opened the drawers on my desk?" He asked.

"Maybe he didn't know he was doing it while he was sleepwalking." Itachi lied again. I couldn't say anything because I didn't have anything to say. "I'll let this slide once. But if I catch you doing something like this again, I won't go so easy on you." Pein said to me.

"Generous of him, wouldn't you say, Eita? Thank our leader." Itachi said. 'Like hell I'm gonna do that!' I thought. But how else am I supposed to get out of this situation. I balled my hands into tight fists and gritted my teeth.

"Thank you, sir." I said through gritted teeth while giving a small bow. "Good. Now let's get you back to your room." Itachi said. "I can go there myself! I don't need you to hold my fucking hand!" I snapped. I left Pein's office and stomped down the hall.

When I got to my room, I slammed the door and flopped on my bed. My door didn't stay closed for long as it was opened. Can you guess who opened it? If you guessed Itachi, then you guessed right. I sat up and frowned at him. "Why did you do that?" I asked.

"Do what?"

"You know what I'm talking about. Why did you lie to Pein? Why protect me?"

"The reason isn't important. Just be grateful I was able to convince him."

"Yeah, I'm super grateful," I said, sarcastically. "You only did that because you knew I'd have to repay you in some way. Which gives you an opportunity to do more of those things to me. Sorry, pal. But there's no way in hell I'm repaying you for what you did for me."

"Are you suggesting I should go back there and tell Pein the truth?"

"What? No! I didn't say-!"

"Because I can, Eita," Itachi said, walking over to me. "Pein will know the real reason why you were in his office and who knows what he could do to you. But it doesn't have to be that way. If you want me to keep my mouth shut, you'll have to do what I say from now on. Just until I think your debt's been repaid."

I looked down with a frown, realizing I was screwed both ways; If I don't do what he says, he'll tell Pein the truth. If I do what Itachi says, he won't tell Pein, but that'll give him opportunities to do more awful things to me.

"What's your answer, Eita?" Itachi grabbed under my face and made me look at him. "Do you want me to go back and tell Pein the truth, or are you willing to repay your debt to me?" He asked.

I glared at him before avoiding eye contact as my hair covered my eyes. "I'm yours. I'll do whatever you want." I mumbled.

"Wise choice."
