Pandora's Box - Part Two, Trials of Hestia

Warning: Gore, Blood, that kind of jazz.

The Cursed Goddess: Previously on Escape the Night.

The Cursed Goddess: Joey wakes up in the forest with the YouTubers. The YouTubers question Joey from where he is.

The Cursed Goddess: Joey doesn't tell the group, but before the YouTubers could ask him more questions, My aunts Hera and Hestia find the group.

The Cursed Goddess: They ask for help, to save the other deities, but not before I send the Caucasian Eagle after them.

The Eagle Flies off, leaving the group Liza-less.  Hestia puts out the fire that caught onto her sleeve, as Hera watches the bird soar off.

Joey Graceffa, The Savant: That was the second time Liza got kidnapped by a bird.

"Oh my god, Liza!" Mac yells at the night. Thomas stands on his toes to see the bird, but the Eagle has flown too far for him too see

"We must hide, the Bird could come back any moment." Hestia warns. She stomps out of the woods, with Hera following gracefully.

Mac, The King: Guess we're going with the scary ladies, okay. The scary ladies with godly powers. Okay.

Hestia ushers the YouTubers into an open spot, a hearth sitting on the middle of the open.

We all gather around the big fireplace, the YouTubers looking behind them every now and them.

"How is this supposed to help us?" Ally asks the goddess. The other murmured in agreement with Ally.

Ally Hills, The Poet: There is space everywhere for the Bird to catch us. How? How?

"The Hearth is a space of holiness. Nobody could hurt us even if they tried. Especially with it's patron goddess within it." Hestia explains to the poet.

Damien and Thomas seemed to be okay with that explanation, sitting down at the logs that acted as chairs. The others stood, still nervous of the trees that hide potential threats.

"I doubt that-," Jaiden starts to say but a loud caw noise cuts her sentence off. They all jumped out of their skins.

The Eagle comes back, Liza nowhere to be seen. The monster flies towards them. Everyone screams, but an invisible orange barrier blocks it from hurting them.

"I could just, put out the fire." Hestia says passive aggressively.

She holds a water bottle to it, threatening to douse the flames. No!" The YouTubers yelled, as Hestia continues to dangle the water above the fire that kept them safe.

Mac, The King: I'm about to... *punches air*

Hestia takes the water bottle away from the fire. The YouTubers breathe in relief as the Eagle flies away, giving up on them.

"So, how do we stop it?" The Savant says.

Rebecca Parham, The Actor: Really? That's your first question? How about 'Where are we?' or 'Why is a giant eagle attacking us?

Hestia nods at the ground. "That, was the Caucasian Eagle. Every single one of them has that medallion they have. We need to break it to unchain the gods from their prisons."

"But we also have to kill the monster." Hera adds in to Hestia's statement. Joey sighed, hoping and wishing for an easy way out.

Joey Graceffa, the Savant: Why can't it be a little bit easy? Why?

"Thanks a lot, Joey." Safiya responded petty. Joey looked at her, shocked she pinned this on him.

Safiya Nygaard, The Apothecary: I know Joey and I used to be friends, but he's the reason I'm dead. If he didn't vote for me, I would probably still be alive.

"You think I did this" Joey says, hurt. Safiya glares at Joey. "We arrived here at the same time as you, when I almost escaped the jar.. You must've had something to do with that"

Hestia interrupted "This is not Joey's fault. But Joey is at fault for Safiya and Liza's presence here." Hestia said.

Safiya glared at Joey, as Joey looked ashamed at his feet. "Sorry?"

Safiya scoffed. "sOrrY" She mocked, and Joey felt the guilt pile up on his chest, dragging his self esteem down. Hera's eye twitched.

"You guys need to stop fighting." Hera said, pushing Liza and Joey apart. "This is a topic for another time. Right now, the goal is escaping."

Hestia nods, and brings out a map of the place. Everyone surrounds the map, seeing where to go. Hestia hums thoughtfully.

"We need two people too come with me. All we need is to kill the bird. Everything else will be explained once we do."

Thomas Sanders, the Singer: Is this animal abuse?

Joey and Safiya shared a look, knowing what's about to happen.

"Of course, one you will have to die. And you have to risk your life the entire time. Any volunteers?" Hera says. They all back up from her.

"Yeah, no." Damien says.

Damien Haas: The Playwright: Yeah, no one's gonna volunteer.

"Okay then. We will hold a vote. Whoever's name is drawn will be forced to participate, unless someone volunteers."

Hestia grabs a piece of fire and spreads it through the air. The flame forms into cards, with their faces in it.

Thomas gulped. The prospect of being forced into a deadly challenge scared him. You can do this Patton said in his head. Virgil quickly contradicted that though.

Thomas steps up first and looks at the cards.

Thomas Sanders, The Singer: I don't know who to pick. But Joey did drag Safiya and Liza into this, so I guess it's justified?

Thomas covered the deck and points to Joey's card, and sees Joey's cards float into Hera's hand. He rubs his shoulder, feeling guilty.

Mari steps up and looks at Thomas before facing the cards. So many faces, staring at her. She immediately felt guilty. She drags her finger around the cards for a sec.

Mari Takahashi, The Warrior: The only person I know is Damien. So not him. I guess I'll just pick at random.

Mari closes her eyes and taps one of the cards. She opens and sees it's Rebecca's she gulps and stays away from the cards.

Joey's turn.

Joey Graceffa, The Savant: I tried to save Safiya at the start, and now she's being a bitch. So I'm voting her.

Without hesitating, he points at Safiya's card. So on, and So on until Safiya's turn.

All the votes are in:

Thomas: The Savant

Mari: The Actor

Joey: The Apothecary

Mac: The Playwright

Damien: The Savant

Ally: The Savant

Jaiden: The Apothecary

James: The Apothecary

Rebecca: The Warrior

Safiya: The Savant

Hera shuffles the cards and two fly out of the deck. The rest gulp down their dread. Hera reads the names out.

Hera announces the first draw. "The Warrior." Mari flinches at her name as Damien frowns at the cards. Hera pulls Mari to her side, as Joey looks down to his feet

Safiya Nygaard, The Apothecary: I really really hope it's Joey.

Hera says the second name. "And the Apothecary." Safiya balls her fists. Glaring at Joey, she walks to Hera's side.

"Let's go get your friend" Hestia says. She summoned a fire and led the two to face their destinies.

Panting, Safiya and Mari finally found the Eagle.

And Liza. Who was banging on the cage with a rock. "Get fucked, bird man!" Liza yelled. The bird screeched at Liza, but Liza kept banging the rock against the rusting metal.

"This should be simple. All we need to do I grab Liza, The necklace, and kill the bird." Hestia says.

Safiya and Mari look at her. "Where not killing the bird." Mari says. Safiya nods. Hestia rolls her eyes.

"I'll do the killing, obviously." Hestia says. Safiya and Mari nod. "Just focus on getting Liza, I'll kill the bird."

Hestia leaps from they're hiding spot, revealing her godly power. She blasted a ray of fire at the bird, to be deflected by it's wings.

"Go!" Hestia says, she runs to the bird and summons a whirl of fire.

Safiya and Mari rush to Liza, as Liza waves at them. "There's a machine thingy there. I think it's too free me!" Liza said.

Mari runs to the device, with a note on top. Safiya comes to her side read the letter with her.

Mari and Safiya look to each other as Safiya read the note out loud.

"The Caucasian Bird thirsts for the blood of a mortal. When the bird is fed this box will open, which the Bird has hid Hestia's medallion and the key to it's cage."

Safiya Nygaard, the Apothecary: First off, that doesn't help us at all.

Mari sets down the note and looks to Safiya, who is massaging her head, trying to think of something.

"Guys! Hurry up!" Hestia screams as she blocks off a jab from the bird. A funnel of fire emits from her hand, which the bird deflected back at her with it's wing.

Mari tried to think of something, but her mind comes up with nothing. "Where's the padlock?" Mari asks. Liza points to the other side of her cage, which Safiya and Mari race to.

The padlock was bright silver, shining in the moonlight. Marks from a sword (probably Liza's) ruin the cleanliness and elegant designs, but that wasn't of their concern.

Mari Takahasi, the Warrior: How the Hell are we supposed to do this?

She slams her fist into the lock, attempting to dent it. The only thing it does is hurt her hand. "Ow!"

Safiya face palms. "Are you dumb?" Safiya hisses. Before Mari could retaliate, a voice behind them speaks.

"Yes, apparently." They turn, and see the Eagle, dangling Hestia by it's beak, who is spitting cusses at the Bird.

The Caucasian Eagle whips it's head forward, launching the goddess from it's big beak. Mari and Safiya move so their back is too the cage, ignoring the loud crash behind them.

"I won't hurt you for now. Here's a compromise: If you can solve my puzzle, I will give you the medallion to free Hestia and release your friend." The Bird says.

Two very different responses from the two girls. Mari cheered, glad that she could save her friend and Hestia. Safiya, however, sucked her teeth, frustrated. She's been in this situation before.

The Eagle, holds it's wing to the girls, who stared at the bird, confused. "Are you going to ride or what?" The bird said.

Safiya and Mari jumped onto the bird's wing, who shot up from the ground without asking if they're passengers were ready.

They held onto the feathers, looking down to the ground, seeing a Tiny Hestia looking at the sky.

Once they arrived, Safiya jumped from the ground and vomited, as Mari tried to steady herself, vertigo dizzying her.

The gestured to the space they landed on, which had two Greek pillars, with tiny red and yellow pieces scattered around the stands

Safiya Nygaard, the Apothecary: So, after I'm done barfing, I see these two puzzles, and I try not to vomit again.

The bird opens it's mouth- er beak, to speak. "Here are the rules:

Safiya and Mari have to fight to the death. Each have to solve a puzzle with 8 pieces which forms a picture of a Hestia's flame. The first one to do so will pull the item from the box, which will seal the loser's fate. To make the challenge harder, you can only get a piece once you answer the riddle that chains it down. Also the floor is lava."

The ground in which hold the puzzle breaks apart, which now holds large pieces of land, rocking dangerously as red lava splashed against theme

Mari Takahashi, the Warrior: Welp, shit

The bird opens its beak to speak again. "If you fall into the lava, you will not die, but you will be out of the solving process for 15 seconds. There are 20 pieces each of you must collect. Safiya, take the orange pieces. Mari, take the red ones."

Mari and Safiya step up to the edge of the lava pit, where they prepare to try not to die. "On my caw, you start. Good luck, you'll need it." A large caw signals them. Safiya and Mari jump into different pieces of ground.

Mari lands on her feet gracefully, beelining for a red piece. Safiya, however, almost fell to the lava, her feel dangling on the edge. The ground did not help.

Safiya Nygaard, the Apothecary: How the heck did she do that?!

After she solves the riddle, Mari snatches up her red piece, which she places onto the pillar. She flew away from the pillar and landed on another piece of rock, which rocked gently on the waves of lava.

Mari: 1 of 8

Safiya cussed her out under her breathe as she tried to steady the rock she stood on. She glances at the orange piece on her floating rock, which bared a riddle:

What was the name of the island where Artemis and Apollo were born?

She racked her brain for an answer, the word at the top of her tongue. "Delos." Safiya said. The piece glowed and the riddle disappeared. She snatched it up, and runs to her respective pillar.

Safiya Nygaard, the Apothecary: Thank all the gods that I read Percy Jackson before this.

Safiya: 1 out of 8

Mari jumps onto a floating rock, where she read the inscription of a puzzle.

Who is the god of death?

Mari snapped her fingers. "Hades!" Mari answered, but the lettering grew red, meaning she was wrong.

Mari Takahashi, the Warrior: I- wait- what?

The glow grew stronger and the piece she was on, started to sink rapidly, the lava consuming each piece. There was only narrow space left, which she stood on, that hadn't sunk under the lava.

She tried to jump, but the closest piece wasn't close enough. She felt her shoes touch the piece, but it crashed onto the lava with the rest of her body.

Mari fell into lava

Safiya witnessed all of this, gaping with her mouth open in shock. "What the fuck?" Safiya yelled.

Safiya Nygaard, the Apothecary: So if we get the riddle wrong, the piece sinks into the lava. What the hell.

Safiya takes advantage of the time, and lands on another island, where two orange pieces lay.

She reads the inscription:

Who is the goddess of wisdom?

She rolls her eyes, the riddle too easy for her. "Athena" she replies, and the piece glowed. She snatched it up and makes her way to the pillar.

Safiya: 2 out of 8

Mari is spit out by the lava, drenched and panting on one of the pieces. "Shit," she says before she starts scanning for a red piece. A red glint caught the corner of her eye, which she bee lined for.

Mari Takahashi, The Warrior: I'm falling slightly behind. I'm panicking.

Safiya jumps back to her original piece, which sways gently beneath her weight. She looked down at the second orange piece.

Who is Zeus's mother?

"Rhea" Safiya said after some thought. The writing disappeared, and she desperately grabbed the piece. She ran to the pillar.

Safiya: 3 of 8

Mari reaches the red piece she was looking for.

Mari Takahashi, the Warrior: I only have 1 piece. She has three. I'm probably going to die right now.

Name a demigod.

Mari instantly knew one. "Hercules" She answers. The writing disappears. She snatched at it and launched herself to her pillar.

Mari: 2 of 8

She stopped to see Safiya, who is holding two pieces in her hands. "Shit." Mari thought.

Safiya: 5 of 8

She ran towards Safiya, and body slammed into her. Her balance faltered, and she fell into a hole of lava. She grabbed the pieces that she dropped during her fall and tossed it out of the arena.

Safiya fell into lava

Safiya Nygaard, the Apothecary: So I was winning, and she just, pushes me out of the fucking way.

Mari Takahashi, the Warrior: I'm a nice person, but I have to win this. And Safiya was getting in the way.

After putting her red piece down, she launched herself from the pillar and chased after a red piece that dangled close to the edge of land.

Mari: 3 of 8

Safiya's body launched from the lava, coughing and gagging. She stood up wobbly and searched for another piece.

Safiya Nygaard, the Apothecary: Where the hell where the pieces that I had?

Safiya glance around her, and sees two pieces, a good few feet away from the pit. That bitch

Safiya sprints out of the pit and grabs her two pieces. Stealing a glance at Mari, she puts down 2 more pieces.

Mari: 5 of 8

Mari Takahashi, the Warrior: I'm pretty sure we're tied now.

The Warrior leaps to a wobbly platform with a red piece. I cannot let her win Safiya thought.

She runs to her platform and puts down the two pieces that Mari threw out of the pit of lava.

Safiya: 7 of 8

Safiya Nygaard, the Apothecary: All I need is one more, then I can solve the puzzle. Then, I can get out of here alive.

Mari Takahashi, The Warrior: I'm about to lose. Damnit, say goodbye to ____ for me.

Safiya spots her next piece and runs to it, as Mari sets down two more pieces.

Mari: 7 of 8

Mari Takahashi, the Warrior: I'm so sorry about this Safiya.

Taking off her shoe, she throws it at Safiya's head, and it hits her painfully. She stumbles, and the rocky land wobbles beneath her.

Mari turns and continues the challenge with one shoe, determined and already finding her red piece.

Safiya fell into lava

Mari Takahashi: I feel my hand grab the red piece, and I place it down the pillar. All I need to do is solve.

Mari: 8 of 8

Safiya is spat out of the lava, her body aching. Especially her head, who protested every movement her body made.

Safiya Nygaard, the Apothecary: I'm gonna die. There's no way of escaping this.

Mari solves the puzzle

Key found

Mari runs to the box and hastily opens it, as Safiya watches helplessly on her knees.

Two items greet Mari as she opens the lid carefully. Chains and a note.

Chains of Prometheus found

Note found

Mari shakily pulls out the note, as the loser stands, staring at Mari.

Safiya Nygaard, the Apothecary: I mean, I can't blame Mari for sabotaging me. But I can, hate her.

Clearing her throat, she read the note out loud. "Congratulations, you won. Yay. These are the Chains of Prometheus, the very chains that bound Prometheus to the rock. The loser will be tied to the rock with these very chains, who will suffer the same fate."

The note fluttered away from Mari's trembling fingers, Safiya backing away from the Warrior.

Mari Takahashi, the Warrior: Sorry, it's me or her.

The Warrior took a step forward, approaching Safiya, who was scrambling backwards. "Mari..."

"I'm sorry Safiya." She lunged her body at the Apothecary, grabbing Safiya's wrist. Screaming, Safiya's hands were bound and banging on Mari's armor.

Safiya Nygaard, The Apothecary: Are you serious? Again?

Mari tied her up to a rock with a fire emblem, her face stone cold. Oh my god. I'm actually gonna kill this bitch.

The Warrior backed up to see her work. Safiya was tied down by her hands, screaming her head off. Mostly profanities.

Whoosh, a large rustle of feathers appeared in the corner of her eye. The Eagle, about to kill Safiya. As soon as Safiya saw the Eagle, she started crying, pleading.

Safiya, the Apothecary: I'm gonna die. Again. What the hell. I hate everything.

The Bird plunged it's beak down Safiya's stomach. Mari shut her eyes tightly, not wanting to see the gore and blood.

She blocked up Safiya's screams with her hands, as hot tears ran down her face. The screams muffled by her hands, she desperately wished she would silence herself.

Then, silence. Cold, eerie silence. Mari opened her eyes too see Safiya with her stomach ripped apart, blood dripping and splattered around her.

The Eagle looks to her, which Mari flinched at. The birds feathers and beak glistened with blood in the starry night.

The Eagle held a wing to her, which Mari hesitantly climbed, swallowing her bile. She's riding the thing that just killed someone she knew.

She rested her head on the feathers, as she tried to think of anything else to keep her mind on.

Hestia was talking with Liza, who was anxiously walking around her cage.

Liza Koshy, the Hero: I'm really hoping Safiya is still alive. I have nothing against Mari, but I need to have an alliance against Joey before he kills us all again.

A caw echoed against the cages metal, and Liza gripped the bars anxiously. "The bird is back."

The Eagle landed beside Hestia and Liza. "Moment of truth." Liza whispered beneath her breath. The bird bowed down to the goddess and Hestia, and Mari's purple hair greeted them.

Liza was heavily disappointed, and Hestia ran to her aide. Mari jumped down from the bird, and hugged Hestia. She looked like she was about to vomit.

Mari looked to the bird, and nodded. Like a woman on a mission. The bird, flew to the machine and smeared blood over it.

A box opened near it, an orange glow illuminating the cage. Liza ran to the box, two items greeted back at her.

Key found

Medallion of Hestia found

Liza, eagerly, snatched up her key and ran to the other side of the cage, with the padlock that kept her bound. She opened her cage, and ran to Mari's side.

The Eagle flew to them, and dropped a Medallion into Hestia's waiting hands. She gripped the Medallion, and wrapped it around her neck.

Flying off, the bird left with no words, leaving a fire goddess, an Asian murderer, and a Zombie YouTuber, staring at the night sky.

"Oh my god, they both died." Thomas said. Ally was trying to calm him down, but his mind was racing.

Mac was casually talking to Hera, who told him tales of her adventures and such. Hera has summoned some food for them, which Joey ate anxiously.

Joey Graceffa, the Savant: You know, I know people are dying, but I'm glad we chose to team with the gods. They give us food.

"Mari!"

They all turned their heads. The animators approached her steadily. Her purple hair looked like a rat's nest. Her armor was covered in blood and scratches.

Joey and Damien stood and approached Mari, who's face was green. She looked like she was about to barf, so Joey backed up and gave her space.

Rebecca Parham, the Actor: What happened? Did Safiya really die?

Mac, the King: Where did Hestia get that cute meddalion?

Damien stood by Mari, and gripped her shoulders, comfortingly. Mari shoes away his hands.

"Oh my god, what happened?" Jaiden asked, sitting down Mari and wiping the blood of her with a cloth.

Mari Takahashi, the Warrior: Obviously, I'm not gonna tell them I killed her.

Mari balled her fists and wiped tears stealing down her cheeks. "We found Liza, obviously."
Mari waved her hand, and there was Liza, awkwardly waving at the crowd.

"Oh, hi." Mac said, and they all continued to listen to Mari's story.

Liza Koshy, the Hero: Wow, guys. Feeling the love. Totally not like I just escaped the claws of death. No, carry on.

Mari recounted the tale, as Hestia gave Mari a glass of water. She drank it gratefully. The entire group stood shocked.

Mac, the King: Damn

Thomas Sanders, the Singer: That's rough buddy

The silence stretched out between them, and they all quietly thought of Safiya and their own fates.

Joey Graceffa, the Savant: I refuse to die. I simply say no in the face of death.

"We have to team together. No more fighting." Mari said, glancing at Liza and Joey, who stood at opposite sides of the hearth.

"Truce?" Joey said. Liza nodded, refusing to even go near Joey.

Liza Koshy, the Hero: I don't touch murderers.

"Now that's settled, we have to figure out how the hell we're supposed to do this." Mari said, holding out the medallion.

"I know what to do with it" Hestia says. She gracefully takes the medallion and holds it to the sky. The others watch curiously.

"Yeet!" Hestia yells, and throws the medallion on the ground.
