Working Together. Or Not

Linda slowly stepped forward. Then she froze.

"I don't remember." She whispered. "Why don't I remember anything?" Her face was frozen in a fearful expression.

"I don't know, but I can't remember either," Sam said, taking Linda's hand gently and guiding her to the center.

"I woke up here a few days ago and there were only three things. The bread, the water, and the note." Linda picked up the note and read it.

"Escape? Who wants us to escape?"

"I don't know," Sam said. "But I figure we should."

"Well, that doesn't make sense," Linda argued. "We should find out who put us here first."

Sam sighed, not wanting to fight. "But we can find that if we escape."

"What if they're evil! We could escape into the middle of an evil organization or something, I don't know!"

"How would you know, you forgot everything remember?"

"So did you!"

"At least I've been here longer!"

"And you think you know more?"

Sam stopped, taking a drink of water. Linda furrowed her eyes and frowned.

"That's gross." She remarked. Sam wiped water from her mouth.

"It never get's dirty and never runs out. I don't know why."

Linda opened her mouth, speechless. She peered in and swiped her finger across the surface. Her long black hair was tied in a ponytail, so she didn't have to worry about it getting wet. She leaned forward and drank some, eyes widening.

"Sam, this water... It's good. Like, I can't describe it, but it's..."

"Pure?"

"Exactly."

Linda looked at the items collected in the center.

"What are these?" She asked. She picked up the twine and felt it.

Sam took it from her and set it down gently. "I'm collecting things to escape with."

Linda sighed. "If you want to escape, that's totally cool with me, but how do we do it?"

Sam frowned. What was with this girl? She was just arguing a few minutes ago and now she want's to escape?

"Well..." Sam led Linda to where she had destroyed the floor. She explained how she was pacing and discovered it.

"I'm really glad to have company now." She added after picking up the second note and showing it to Linda.

Linda knelt down and studied the container.

"If we could get the metal out that would be good." She said, studying it.

"I want to get as many materials as possible, so that would work."

Sam watched Linda twist her bracelet in thought.

"We could use that bracelet." She said quickly. Linda stood up and glared at Sam.

"No way! This bracelet is special."

"Sorry," Sam said quietly, apologizing. "But... Why is it special?"

Linda stared into space for a second, as if struggling with her thoughts. Suddenly, a single tear leaked from her eyes.

"Sorry sorry, it's just... Are you okay?" Sam didn't want Linda to cry.

"Stay away from me," Linda said, sitting down. Sam refused, however, and sat next to Linda.

"I know it's hard." She said, trying to keep her voice soft. It was too shaky, though, so she returned to a normal volume.

"I don't remember anything either. But I have learned several things about being here. So far I have two rules to live by. Rule one: Nothing is as it seems. Rule two: Never succumb to insanity."

Linda sniffed. "I just... The bracelet... I know it's special. I just... I forget why. I don't want to forget. You understand, right? To forget your past is to forget who you are."

Linda got up and knocked against the wall.

"What is this made out of?"

Sam got up, not at all minding the change of subject. "I don't know. It reminds me of plastic, but it's cold, like metal."

"Yeah." Linda agreed. "You can faintly see your reflection. It's a bit blurry though."

Sam looked at herself. She noticed that Linda was a couple inches taller. She felt a hand on her shoulder and quickly turned around. Linda was holding out her hair band, strands of hair trailing down her back and landing on her arms.

"You can use this." She said, grinning. "And the string on your sweater." Sam took off her sweater and looked at it, baffled as to how she never thought of that. Linda laughed and took it from her grip, pulling out the string.

"There we go." She tried to toss it to the center, but the string wasn't heavy enough. Sam quickly picked it up and placed it down carefully.

"I don't quite know what to do with this." She remarked, staring at the collection.

"We could make a tool to cut the wall away," Linda said. Sam shook her head. and slammed her fist against the wall. It didn't hurt, rather, her wrist was thrown back.

"I don't know what the material it is, but I think it pushes a force away if it applies enough pressure."

"So we need something that will apply a small amount of pressure? That would take a while."

"Yeah, it would. We need to find some other way."

Linda thought for a minute in silence.

"The metal container that the twine was in... What's beneath it? Could we dig out?"

Sam looked at her, eyes widening.

"I like the way you think." She said slowly.

"Let's do it!"
