Outside, but Still Trapped

Linda had no clue what to expect when the doors opened. And she still didn't. Because the moment Charlie let the doors whiz open, Alexa screamed. A large swarm of... Insects? Small birds? Linda didn't know what they were, but judging by the screams that rang from both Alexa and Charlie's mouths, they were bad.

"Get down!" Gracie said. The creatures parted around her, and hovered about Sam and Linda.

"Don't. Move." Charlie uttered under his breath. He slowly slid one hand into his pocket and drew out a small gun-like device. Pointing it up, he clicked the trigger.

Despite being told not to move, Linda covered her ears and saw Sam do the same as a high pitched noise shot into the air. The creatures scattered, darting out the window with what looked like small strands of hair.

"What was that?" Sam panted.

"Virus flies," Alexa replied, feeling her head nervously. "They take human hair and build their nests in the ruins of buildings taken over by the Virus. The only known creature to survive the Virus without technological aid."

Linda shivered, looking around as if expecting more. "So they ignored Gracie?"

"Yes, they ignore anything that has no hair. Gracie has hair, but it's artificial, build to be strong and act as sensors that can pick up radio signals in case humans still live out there somewhere."

"It was Charlie's idea," Alexa admitted, "Although I was the one who made this." She held up a small box. "Inside is what I call an adrenaline battery. Take it out and spray the liquid inside onto the skin where your heart is. It will temporarily modify your heart rate, giving you a boost of energy."

Both Sam and Linda gazed in awe.

"I didn't even know that was possible!" Sam said. "Are we going now? I'm excited for this!"

Gracie looked at Charlie, who gave her a thumbs up.

"Let's go."

A second door opened, slowly. With the exception of Gracie, everyone covered their eyes. When the noise stopped, the looked up.

"Oh my... Holy crap." ((should i swear in this? maybe I could block a few letters? Tell me what you think))

"Yeah, it's pretty bad."

The town itself was not bad, in fact it was pretty. The buildings were concrete and stacked every which way
