I float in the dark of the silent abyss,
Numb to my thoughts and feelings.
I do not complain nor fight what I feel;
Sleep offers me some sort of healing.

I wish to never again know the light.
I wish to never open my eyes.
All I want is to remain in the dark -
These desires I do emphasize.

You jolt my shoulder with the force of a blast.
My eyes snap open in fear.
I blink and see you in front of my face
And wonder why you were here.

Why did you wake me? I ask myself.
There was such peace in my sleep.
I wish to sink deep back into sweet dreams,
Away from these sorrows I reap.

You grab my hand and pull me to my feet.
You seem to be in a rush.
You look me straight in my two eyes.
You say just one word:

"Run."

Just like that, and off we go.
You clasp to my hand tight.
We run through fields and forests and streets,
We run and run through the night.

I don't have a clue of the place where you lead -
For all I know, we are lost.
But I follow you as we run through the city,
Holding tight to your hand at any cost.

We reach the outskirts of the sleeping city.
We come to the entrance of a cave.
We stop for a moment. You point towards the hollow,
And we run straight in with rave.

Inside, the cave was full of light.
The walls shimmer, lined with jewels.
Such an awesome sight to behold...
The atmosphere is clean and cool.

Though we rush through tunnels and turns,
I soak in every image vividly.
You look behind and grin at my awe.
I smile back and laugh with glee.

Slowly the floor begins to slope
And up we run to the top.
The walls begin to shrink and the path grows narrow.
Still we never stop.

Finally, we reach where the path splits in two.
We stop, stirring up debris.
You let go and turn to face towards the right.
You reach out your hand.

"Do you trust me?"

I hesitate, unaware of what was to happen.
I stretch out my hand, slightly stiff.
You grab it tightly. You smile at me.

And we dive straight down a cliff.

In shock, my racing heart skips a beat.
I have somehow lost your hand.
I'm filled with fear as I plummet down fast.
I close my eyes and wait to land.

A petrified scream lodges up in my throat
As the fear of crashing sets in.
I await to meet the inevitable end.
Then I feel your hand touch my skin.

I open my eyes and see you there,
With that bright, wide grin on your face.
You grasp my hand and don't let go.
And together we fall down apace.

I feel so secure with you by my side.
I slowly cease to fear.
As my mind calms down, we no longer fall
(To my surprise) through the atmosphere.

The sky surrounds us and so do the stars.
They hug us, though I don't know how.
No experience before ever had I felt
That I compare to what I feel now.

We have run through a city asleep, unaware
And have found this new world we're defining.
Running was a journey, and we'll never stop.
We run still, but now we are flying.

I'd always wished to run from my burdens.
Life is hard. I just wanted to quit.
But I find, as we run, I'm not escaping life.
Instead, as I run, I embrace it.

I'd always thought that life was cruel.
I'd never known real joy or bliss.
But now I see just how wrong I was.
My eyes have opened thanks to this.

There is no escape from the sorrows of life,
But we can learn to embrace the rush.
If ever you feel that you can't go on,
Get up. Heed one word:

"Run."
