Chapter 5
“Who… ar.. are yo… you?” I stammered as I gradually turned my head to look at the source of the voice, mentally praying all of this to be mere a nightmare. I wanted to shriek and scream but my throat was parched and words did not come out from my vocal cords as I looked at the horrific sight in front of me.
Turning my head, I saw a tall man dressed in a black kimono with muscular legs and chiseled forearms popping out of his loose black kimono suggesting his strongly built body. A shiver ran down my spine as I noticed that he lacked a head. His headless body in the dimly lit room was terrifying me beyond measure.
The rational side of my mind wanted to tell me that it was perhaps, an optical illusion created by some rival of mine but fear inside me was overpowering my rationale.
“I am someone whom you are searching for, Mr. Ved”. I heard the headless creature talking to me in a loud monotonous voice with a glint of sadness and despair in his voice. The most horrifying vision was a muscular organ that palpitated on his chest while he spoke. Looking closely, I realized it was nothing but his bleeding heart that emanated a mercury-red liquid just similar to the human blood.
As I looked at him shockingly, mentally chanting all the names of God I knew, the terrible stench filled up the room all of the sudden. His heart like thing began to beat rapidly oozing out the blood like liquid when he dropped another bomb, “I am Ansh Awasthy, Mr. Ved and I am no more now”.
“You?” I wanted to ask loudly but my voice was barely audible to me.
“This is my soul, Mr. Detective”, that headless creature informed me patiently as he walked towards the tanned couch in my bedroom and took his seat terrifying me even more.
Being in a trance, I sat on my bed. I was perspiring in my air-conditioned room partly in fear and partly in shock. “Who are you?” I thundered with all the strength I had still refusing to believe that I had confronted a headless ghost.
The deadly headless creature stood up and walked towards my closet that had a collection of whiskeys and wines while I looked at him with surprise. Taking out the most expensive white wine from my collection, that terrifying creature opened the cork of the bottle.
“What are you doing?” I asked stammering only to meet an uncomfortable silence while he poured the wine onto his heart-like organ and sighed in relief.
Taking a deep breath, he gave a sated groan leaving me in utmost shock. I had brought that wine to gift it to Anvita on our anniversary. I was devastated at the loss of fifteen thousand bucks while I glanced at the headless creature menacingly who just chuckled in response.
The headless creature announced, “I have come here to tell you that I was killed”, with a sardonic laugh while I was sweating profusely. The idea of confronting a deadly spirit who was drinking wine in my room had left me appalled.
“Who killed you?”, I asked stuttering again curious to know about the whereabouts of Ansh Awasthy. No doubts, the disappearance of Ansh Awasthy had left me baffled. Being desperate to know the truth, I had begun investigating a spirit too but somewhere, the rational side of my mind was howling that it was an illusion created by my delusional mind.
“I don’t know”, that deadly headless creature sighed exasperatedly leaving me shocked to the core.
“What happened that day?” I asked curiously. Perhaps, the fear in my eyes was replaced by inquisitiveness and thirst of the truth. I was saddened at the fate of Ansh Awasthy, a young lad who was a brat but he had not done anything to lose his life.
The headless creature took a deep breath perhaps, reminiscing the happenings of his past. Recollecting the thoughts, he began his narration, “I had gone on an evening walk on that vile Thursday. While returning back home, I was enjoying the bliss of crepuscule when I heard someone following me on a lonely lane.”
“Why did you opt for a walk in lonely lane?” I questioned him with nervousness in my eyes trying to figure out if that headless creature was actually Ansh Awasthy or some illusion of mine. The idea of this headless creature being a trap to divert my attention from this case was also crossing my mind.
“Ah! Mr. Ved”, the spirit gave a sardonic laugh as he informed, “I had been using that lane since childhood. It reduces the distance between my home and the community park”, and I could not help but agree.
“Then?” I gestured him to continue his side of story while he obliged, “I did not even bother to turn back towards the rustling of leaves while I walked in my own world. When a black colored car stopped beside me, I was startled.”
With a sense of defeat and despair, he continued, “Two masked men came out of the car while one caught my hands from behind. They took me inside the car. Though I tried my best to struggle but they were muscular enough to overpower me. I was blindfolded and injected with something, perhaps, a sedative.”
“Where did they take you?” I asked agitatedly mentally making a note to get the CCTV footage of the nearby area. I was sure that the car would give us some clues to find out the culprit.
“I don’t know”, the headless creature whined like a small kid. With a tiresome sigh, he confessed, “All I know is, when I woke up, I found that I did not belong to this world anymore.”
“Whe… where is yo… your he… head?” I demanded in a barely audible voice. I was stammering in fear as I realized that asking a headless creature about his lost head was perhaps, a sentimental question.
Instead of giving me answer, that terrifying headless creature walked up to my bed almost killing me in fear.
