Baji opens the door to his house. I step inside and I can feel my legs shake when I enter. I drop to the floor. Baji, Mikey, and Draken all look at me with wide eyes. I finally stop hiding the tears. I let them fall down my face. I yell. I punch the ground until my knuckles hurt. I pull on my hair. I start to remember what my father said. 'You're a mistake.' 'She was pretty developed for a 13 year old.' 'Tanaka is my son.' I feel my heart tear. I've never felt this before. It really hurts. I didn't even notice the arms that wrap around me. The only thing I can remember was Tanaka's face.
'Please don't leave me Hana'.
"Fuck, why? Why do I keep on fucking up?" I scream into the chest of someone wrapping their arms around me.
I hear an unfamiliar voice. I calm myself down. You look pathetic right now Hana. Crying isn't going to do anything. I quickly wipe my eyes and look to where the voice is coming from. An older woman, with the same sharp features as Baji, runs to me.
"Oh my sweetie, come here," she wraps her arms around me.
I put my head against her chest. She smells like freshly brewed coffee. I feel warm tears silently fall. All I can think about is my mom. She has never hugged me. We've never been close. I wish I could've had this. Do I really not deserve happiness? What did I do so wrong to deserve this?
"Come on, let's go give you a bath," she picks me up with my hands and leads me upstairs.
She takes me to the bathroom inside someone's bedroom. She turns on the hot bath, and I sit on the closed toilet seat, waiting for her.
"Have you ever gotten a bath from your mom?" she asks noticing my uncomfortableness.
I shake my head. She gives me a sad smile. "Come on, I'll show you."
She helps me into the bath and helps scrub down my shoulders. She washes my hair and helps me into a robe.
"Let's go downstairs and talk with everyone else okay?" She asks.
I nod and follow her downstairs, still in the very warm robe. I see the boys sitting on the couch. They look like they were already talking about something serious by their faces. They notice me come in and all their eyes dart to me. I sit in between Baji's mom and Baji.
"Can you guys tell me what happened?" his mom asks the boys.
Draken sighs. "We were sleeping over at Hana's house. When we woke up, there was a banging at the door and Hana went to go get it."
"We stayed in the room talking to Baji about something, until we heard yelling," Mikey adds.
Baji clenches his fist. "A man that's supposed to be her father was about to punch her in the face so I stopped him."
"He also punched him in the face," Mikey adds causing us all to chuckle.
"Do you mind if I ask what he said to you?" the kind woman asks me.
I look over at the boys uncertain. I feel Baji hold my hand.
"We know what he said. It's bullshit Hana. We all understand, you don't have to feel judged," he says.
I sigh, looking down at my hands. "My parents kicked me out. My da- that man told me that I'm not his biological daughter, and he doesn't see me as his daughter. He uh- he used to do stuff to me when I was a kid," I say seeing a tear drop into my hands.
"I've been taking care of Tanaka for as long as he's been alive. They said that he's their son. They didn't even acknowledge me as their family," I say biting my inner cheek to stop myself from going any further.
The room goes silent. I can't muster up the courage to look at everyone. I hear sniffling, so I finally look up. I see Baji's mom is crying.
"Oh Hana," she wraps her arms around me tightly, crying into my shoulder.
I'm shocked by this. My body is rigid, trying to get used to what's happening. My mind finally registers and I hug her back. This lady hardly knows me, but she cares so much. Is that what a mother is supposed to be like? The woman that would be there for you through anything? She pulls her head away from my shoulder and wipes her eyes clean.
"Okay, that settles it. You'll stay with us, Hana, if that's okay," she says.
"I can't cause you trouble, this isn't your problem to deal with," I say.
"Please Hana, I want to help you. We want to help you," she says.
I sigh and give her a small smile. "Okay."
She smiles big and gives me another hug before standing up. "I have to get her some stuff from the store, I'll be back boys. Best believe you are all staying the night."
When she leaves, I look over at the guys. Mikey looks into my eyes with determination.
"We need to come up with a plan on how to get Tanaka back to us and to take care of your parents," he says.
"Let's just shoot them and take Tanaka," Baji says cracking his knuckles.
Draken shakes his head. "We can't do that. We'd get arrested."
They start arguing about it and I clear my throat. "Guys, don't worry about it for right now. We can come up with something tomorrow, when our brains are fresh."
"I made a promise to Tanaka. I said I'd come back to him. I don't plan on breaking that promise. But we need a stable plan, something that'll work in the long run. So let's do it with level heads," I say.
Mikey and Draken agree, but Baji stays quiet. Mikey yawns. "Come on Kenchin, I want to sleep and I need you to tell me that bed time story again."
That causes me to crack a small smile. "Goodnight guys."
The say goodnight and head to a room down the hall.
"Are you okay staying with me?" He asks.
"As long as you don't take all the blanket," I say and he finally smiles.
He takes me to his room. It's an average sized room, but there's tons of pictures on the walls. I see pictures of him and Mikey when they were kids. I smile. He looks so happy and young.
"Here, you can change into this, it's cold," Baji says handing me a sweatshirt.
I take it from him and step inside his closet. He has a walk in, but there's not a lot of things in here. I realize I'm still in my pajamas. I never changed from earlier. I put on the sweatshirt. It hangs long, covering my shorts. But it's really warm. It smells like Baji, too. Ew creepy. I walk out and see him already laying in bed. He takes the left side, so I assume I'm the right. He notices me and I see his eyes trail down my body quickly before looking back up. I slip in under the sheets. I curl my legs up to my chest. I'm facing Baji.
"Are you warm?" He asks me.
I nod. "Yeah, thank you."
"Do you want to talk about today?" He asks me.
I shake my head. "Honestly, I've talked too much."
"I'm sorry about my mom, she can be kind of extreme with her emotions sometimes," he says.
"Actually, your mom is amazing. My own mother and I have never hugged. It was weird in the beginning, but it was nice," I say.
He reaches up to my head and brushes my hair back from my face. "I'm really sorry."
I sigh. "I can't do much about what happened. The only thing I can do is figure out how I'm going to fix this."
I feel myself move closer to Baji. I don't know what goes over me but I wrap my arm around his body and put my face against his chest.
"I... like how it feels when we are like this," I say feeling my cheeks heat up at the confession.
His body is stiff for a moment, but then he wraps his arms around me. "Me, too."
