1- Breaking things off

After hours of deliberation, the jury finally came to their decision and headed back into the courtroom with the jury foreman handing the verdict to the court officer. As he looked down at the ruling he held in his hand, Jocelyn looked at her client, leaned closer, and nudged him after seeing he was looking down at his hands. "Look up and sit straight, please," she whispered.

"Will the defendant please rise..." the court officer said as he locked eyes with Jocelyn's client, pausing until he stood. "We, the jury, find the defendant not guilty," he read out loud before handing the verdict over to the judge.

Jocelyn knew he had nothing to worry about with his case. Every piece of evidence she was able to find proved he was an innocent man and smiled as she looked over at her client, speaking quietly, "Not guilty, just like I said you would be from when I first spoke to you on the phone; you're now a free man."

The judge lowered his glasses to the rim of his nose and looked at the verdict the foreman handed him, then turned his head and looked at the jury as he removed his glasses. "Jury foreman, is this verdict correct?"

She stood while looking at the defendant, then looked over to the judge as she wiped her hands down the sides of her dress. "Yes, your honor. With all the evidence presented to us and after listening to all the witnesses provided, we, the jury, came together with the final decision of finding the defendant not guilty."

"Thank you. You may sit." He handed the verdict back to the court officer and instructed him to pass the ruling over to the prosecuting attorney. As the attorney looked over the verdict, his face fell, giving off a look of disgust, and he handed the paper back to the officer.

"Do you have any questions?" the judge asked the prosecuting attorney.

"No, no questions, your honor," he sighed, collecting all his papers and stacking them nicely together.

The judge looked at Jocelyn's client, congratulating him. "You're a free man," he said, then explained once he got back to the jail and completed the paperwork, he would be immediately set free.

Jocelyn stood, shaking her client's hand. "Again, congratulations. I knew all along they had the wrong man, and you would be set free."

With tears filling his eyes and still in shock about the verdict, he broke down while shaking her hand. "Thank you so much," he finally said. He never thought he would ever see the day of freedom after being accused of such a vicious crime, which he knew he never committed. He loved his wife more than anything and never would have brutally murdered her. It was still killing and haunting him since the day he came home from work and found his wife lying in a pool of blood on their kitchen floor with her throat slit and multiple stab wounds covering her entire body.

With tears still flooding his eyes, he couldn't help but hug his attorney, not wanting to go back to the place he hated. Although, he was more than ecstatic to know he didn't have to spend another night in a place where he had to make sure he slept on his back and had to keep his ears open at all times, not wanting to wake up to any surprises. "I now only hope they'll take the focus off me and find out who did this."

"They will," she assured him.

On the way back to the office, she couldn't stop smiling. It was her fourth win in one week, and she had one more case to go to finish off the week, hopefully with another win. She walked into the office and saw a group of attorneys huddled around in a circle, whispering amongst themselves. Not wanting to interrupt whatever they were discussing, she remained quiet as she walked past, trying to listen in on what they were saying.

"Jocelyn, I hear you've won another case," Alex, one of the attorney's said, stopping her. "Congratulations."

For the past week, Alex had been on her shit list and was about to ignore him. Instead of looking and acting like a bitch, she turned and smiled. "News travels fast, doesn't it?" she asked with a fake smile, with her smile slowly fading as she didn't care for the grin on his face.

"Only when someone has been on a roll... so, tell us, what's your secret?" he asked.

She looked at Alex and wanted to laugh. She couldn't believe they still employed him at McAndrews Law Firm. He hadn't won a case in months and had gone to her asking for help before they fired him for it. She felt terrible and did what she could to help; only nothing she did to help him worked. "No secret. I'm just an attorney who believes her clients, and I will do anything to prove them innocent. As for you, you worry more about getting into your clients' pants instead of proving their innocence."

His facial expression dropped, and his brows formed together while looking at her. He couldn't believe what she said in front of their colleagues and felt embarrassed when the other attorneys started looking at him. He started wondering if they thought the same as her. He knew he needed to defend himself before word got back to the big guys, Quinn and Finn. "That's not true. I can't help my clients are always found guilty."

"Then you need to find a new career," she not so nicely said, pushing her way past him.

"For your information, I won a case a couple of days ago," he called out while turning in her direction and pointing his finger into the air while watching her head toward her office.

A wicked grin formed on her face as she walked away, thinking of the expression he had on his face after calling him out on his affairs with his clients. She didn't know for sure if he was. She was only assuming he had been after seeing a client leave his office the other day with her shirt buttoned in the wrong holes, with him walking behind her, running his fingers through his hair, trying to fix what looked like he had just got done having rough sex.

"Oh, Alex," she grinned as she stopped and turned around on her heel. "One more thing... did you happen to see any clients recently, as in like, today?"

He adjusted his tie and smiled. "As a matter of fact, I did. A client of mine left just before you walked in. Why?"

"Because your fly is open."

She smiled and giggled as she shut her office door, knowing she embarrassed Alex in front of their colleagues, and walked over to her desk. Just as she sat, her office phone rang. Thinking it was a client calling her direct line, she answered it. "McAndrews Law Firm, Jocelyn speaking..." Her eyes rolled, and she leaned back in her chair once she heard who it was. "Miles, I thought I'd told you many times before not to be calling my work."

"It's the only way I can get a hold of you. You don't answer your phone when I call, and you refuse to respond to my texts. I don't know what I did, and I deserve to know what's going on."

"Nothing is going on. I've been extremely swamped," Jocelyn explained while looking at the stack of manila folders sitting directly in front of her. She spun her chair and used her heel; she stopped the chair from turning when she faced the window and then stared out into the sky.

Jocelyn and Miles have been seeing each other for about eight months. She likes him a lot, but she has grown a bit frustrated with him, frustrated he hasn't attempted to have sex with her. The last time they were together, two weeks ago, Jocelyn panicked after he brought up wanting them to be exclusive and that he wanted her to move in with him. She never responded, and that night after he fell asleep, she left quietly and hadn't spoken to him since.

"Jocelyn, I deserve to hear an answer about us, and it's been killing me you're ignoring me," he sighed.

She could hear in his voice how hurt and desperate he was and took a deep breath. Then her lips twisted when she thought back to the night she left and closed her eyes, feeling she might regret what she's about to say. "Fine. You're right. I owe you an explanation. I'll leave work early, and I'll meet you somewhere," she replied, unsure of what her explanation will be.

"Meet me at that Mediterranean restaurant you love so much. Six o'clock, and not a minute later... come hungry."

She hung up with Miles, then folded her hands together, thinking about what she'll say to him. She thought for a bit until she heard a knock at the door and stood quickly to answer it.

"Alex, what do you need?" she groaned, seeing who was at the door.

He looked behind him both ways, then turned back and looked at her, focusing only on her eyes, trying not to look down at her breasts. "I need to talk to you, please?" he quietly said.

She saw the desperation in his eyes and sighed.

"Please?"

Ugh, she groaned and opened the door further, allowing him to come in, then shut the door after he walked in, and he sat in the chair in front of her desk. "What did you need to talk to me about?" she asked as she walked over, resting her hip against the desk with her arms crossed against her chest.

"Why did you have to embarrass me like that?"

"Embarrass you, how? If I'm not mistaken, I wasn't the one with my fly wide open after having a client in my office."

"For one, you were telling everyone I've been sleeping with my clients when that isn't true, and two, you had to tell everyone that my fly was open. You could have whispered that one to me."

She laughed. "Could have fooled me. I've seen you and your women clients who have left your office looking like they just got fucked," she mocked, turning to walk around her desk, only to be stopped when he reached for her hand and pulled her onto his lap.

"Damn it, Jocelyn, you're the only one I've been sleeping with," he insisted. He leaned towards her, dug his face into her hair while closing his eyes, and smelled her. "Damn, you smell good," he whispered.

"Let go of me," she snapped, pushing herself up off his lap. "I'm not stupid. I've seen it. And for your zipper to be down, wide open for everyone to see? Give me a break!" she hissed as she walked closer to the window.

He slowly gulped and tilted his head back. "Jocelyn, I just so happened to have left the restroom and forgot to zip when I walked over to see what the others were talking about."

She laughed.

Ignoring her laugh, he tilted his head to the side and smiled as he looked her up and down, admiring her long slim legs. "Quit looking at me like that," she groaned after feeling his eyes undressing her.

"Let's go to dinner tonight and talk."

"I'm busy," she replied quickly.

"With what?"

She turned around and rested her hand on her hip, giving him a dirty look.

He cleared his throat, took a deep breath, then exhaled, "You're going out with him tonight, aren't you?"

"Even if I was, why would it matter? You and I are not a couple, just a couple fuck buddies, isn't that what you called it?"

"Not exactly... besides, I don't see why you're getting pissy with me when you're the one out seeing other people. Tell me, Jocelyn. Does Mark know you're out fucking other men?"

"His name is Miles... and that's none of your business. What I do behind closed doors is my business. Not yours, not his, no one's," she instructed while turning around. "You can go now; I have a ton of work to do, and I need to go over my paperwork for another big case I have tomorrow. One that I need to win."

He stood. Walked up from behind Jocelyn, slithered his arms around her waist, and pulled her tightly against him, resting his chin on her shoulder. "Please dump Mark, Miles, whatever the fuck his name is, and be exclusive only with me."

She turned around and tilted her head to the side as she looked him in the eyes. "I'm sorry, Alex, we're over too..." she said, removing his hands off her.

She walked over to the door, held her hand on the doorknob, and stared at him. "Alex, please. I was only there to try to help you win your cases. And you still fucked them up. You need to realize what we had was nothing more than just a fling. That's it."

"Jocelyn..." he groaned as he walked towards her. "What happened between us, the few times we were together, was fucking amazing. And you know it."

"Alex..." she said, looking down, then sighed, "Your fly is still open... you're not walking out of this room looking like that."

He looked down, zipped up his pants, and tried talking her into giving him a chance. "You can't tell me the sex wasn't amazing because it was."

"Alex, no it..." she began saying, then changed her mind. "Besides, I overheard you, gossipers, talking about Finn and Quinn coming into the office next week. The last thing I want is for them to find out two of their employees are fooling around. We're supposed to be professionals. Meaning we're attorneys who are supposed to be helping their clients, not attorneys helping other attorneys by locking their legs together and swapping gravy."

He looked at her like he had just lost his best friend. He knew he never had a chance with her but tried giving it a shot, anyway. As she opened the door, he kicked out his foot, stopping the door. "I want to know one thing."

"What's that?" she asked, wishing he would just leave.

"Was I that bad in bed?"

The corner of her lips twitched, and she placed her hand on his shoulder. "You weren't that bad, but... if you want to know the truth, I think you need more help in that department. I suggest you watch more porn to learn how to satisfy a woman the correct way."

He released his foot from the door and looked to the ground, wanting to say something but couldn't. He knew he fucked up and knew he better focus more on his work than trying to focus on getting into the pants of women and dipping his meat skewer into that warm sauce of theirs.

Jocelyn was buried deep into her work when it dawned on her about meeting Miles for dinner. She looked at her watch, saw it was six, and panicked. Along the way out, she tried calling Miles, only to hear his voicemail each time she called.

Crap, she muttered while hitting the elevator button a dozen times until the doors opened. She didn't know why she was freaking out. After all, she planned to end things with Miles and felt being a few minutes late wouldn't kill him any more than her breaking things off with him.

She rushed into the restaurant, saw him sitting at their usual spot, and when she noticed the look on his face and how he was checking his watch, she mumbled, Shit, he's pissed. Again, she wasn't sure why she was worried about how he felt until she sat down across from him and saw the hurt look in his eye.

"Sorry I'm late."

"Only thirty minutes late, but in reality, you're early. Usually, you're an hour late," Miles said, not surprised.

"I didn't mean to be late," she sighed as he poured her a glass of wine. "I honestly tried to be on time."

"You look like you could use a drink," he said while studying her face. He knew by the expression on her face; something was on her mind and the way she was avoiding eye contact with him. "If you're here to break things off with me, I'm going to ask that you wait until after dinner."

Jocelyn's eyes jumped up to his, then she grabbed the glass of wine from his hand, and as she looked at him, her brows drew together. "What makes you think I'm breaking things off with you?"

"It's written all over your face. Plus, you've been ignoring me since I asked you to make things official and to move in with me."

"I needed time to think, and I also needed that time without anyone in my ear deciding for me."

"And what did you come up with?"

Her mouth opened, then it quickly closed.

"Never mind. Wait until after dinner. I already know the answer. At least let me buy you a nice break-up dinner before you drop the bomb."

Her shoulders fell, and she looked away. She felt terrible knowing Miles figured what her plan was and how he was nice about it. She looked back at Miles and bit the inside of her cheek, thinking, making sure what she was about to do was the right thing.

She loved his dark chocolaty brown eyes, dark hair, and his deep voice that had her panties feeling moist almost every time he spoke. She looked at him once again, then she closed her eyes and took a deep breath, taking in how damn good looking he was. But the truth of the matter is, she knew they weren't meant to be a couple.

A part of her was saying, 'You're making a huge mistake.' Another part of her was saying, 'You're doing the right thing.' The hardest part was how thoughtful, caring, and devoted he was to her, but the more she thought about it, the more she hated herself for not returning the same gestures as he was to her.

Knowing how great of a guy he was, she knew he didn't deserve her and felt he deserved someone who would give him their full attention, which was something she hadn't done since the day they started seeing each other.

"Miles-"

"Jocelyn," he interrupted. "Before you give me the speech on how we're not meant for each other, can we at least enjoy this last night together?" He forced a smile, then lifted his glass. "Let's start this over, forget you were late, and forget you're here to break it off with me. With that said, I want you to know you look very nice tonight."

"Thanks, you too," she said, feeling remorseful.

After dinner, he walked with her outside and over to her car. Before opening her door, he had her face him and wrapped his arms around her waist, clasping his hands together as he looked her in the eyes.

"I do appreciate you being honest with me, and I wish you would reconsider us. I figured by eating that sweet pussy of yours; it would have been enough to keep you around. Apparently, I'm good at misjudging."

She had her suspicions on why they never had sex and had to ask. "Eight months, Miles... why stick your face in the pie, and not the meat?"

His face turned flush and leaned into her ear, embarrassed to say the truth out in the open, and filled her in on what she'd been suspecting for months. "I-I'm a virgin."
