The Year Package (Feedback)

Comments: 1. The book definitely caught my attention being that I've never read anything that combined an escort service featuring a human serving supernatural clients. I thought this was very clever and both the title and descriptions were clear in what the book was going to be about.

2. The book was very well written and definitely met my expectations with regard to grammar and writing style!

3. The plot was very interesting and something I had never read before. I was excited to read the next chapter once I was finished with one.

4. The characters both from the human and supernatural spectrum were very compelling and very believable. I enjoyed reading their internal dialogue very much. I find myself writing that way also from each character's perspective so that's just a personal preference for me. Very well done!

5. The pacing was spot on. You gave just enough to keep the story flowing without over doing it.

6. You definitely have a strength in setting the scene for your readers. I loved how descriptive you were, down to even describing Dominic's dimples when we are first introduced to him. You show a scene without telling which is so important in writing. I could feel what was happening and did not have to make up anything in my head. It was all there for me to enjoy!

7. I loved your writing style. Keep doing what you are doing with those dialogues and details :)

8. I would most definitely read more of your work!

Comments: Despite the many grammar mistakes in this I could still easily understand the storyline. However, how the characters feel for each other and who they are, are both a little fuzzy. We do get introduced to some characters in this but when things happen to them we don't really know how they feel about it or what they want to do next. Even when two of them meet, it's literally like they just stare at each other.

So my recommendation would be to focus more on how characters make each other feel. And be a lot more descriptive on what is happening and what they want to happen, other then just the blankly stares from across the room.

Comments: This was an interesting twist of what kind of seemed like a modern twist of beauty and the beast. At least that's how it appeared to me. Dominic is a multi-billionaire vampire who hires a hooker from a mythological brothel, basically. It is one of those possessive relationships, where the guy want to own the female.

I was surprised, honestly that Mae was a human. I figured she'd be at least a witch. It seems like kind of a dangerous situation to have a human to do. She could be easily killed.

I did read every chapter in this story and enjoyed it. The chapters seemed very short, and a few of them lagged a bit. I get that the IRS/FBI investigation is important to the plot, but I did struggle thought those chapters, just not quite as gripping as some of the others. I am curious though. If mythological creatures exist, are they suspecting that they are mythological or is this a mortal view. I just can't imagine in a world where all this is real that a mythological agency doesn't swoop in and take it completely over to hide their world.

I did enjoy the plot line. It's interesting to be sure, and I would like to keep reading the story. It's like 'Pretty Woman' with vampires, lol.

I can't say that I can relate to a whore and a vampire, but the characters seem to fit their roles well. Mae has stayed her strong willed-sassy self and Dominic is still the broody vampire. The sub-characters are slowly introduced throughout the book, and I am looking forward to seeing how their parts play out throughout the story and what roles they will play to the main characters.

Descriptions were done well and painted a good mental picture for me. The only complaint that I have is some double usage of words. For example, that was a part where ti said the manager managed... since the person's job description in its title, the managed is repetitive. There were several other spots where this was done. In the intro the writer also pointed out that there were tense changes, and there definitely was. I hopefully wasn't too annoying while trying to help point them out.

I did enjoy this story and plan on following it as it's updated.

Comments: The title 'The Year Package' matched what I suspected from the get-go based on the blurb. The first five chapters I read were exciting to me. A human as a prostitute for the supernatural. The plot is unique. Why Mae? Why does this vampire want her for a year? What is his fascination with this human? These are the questions that kept me reading this book. Delilah/Mae is relatable as a prostitute who's in it for the money. I like the introduction of the different supernatural beings and their different quirks and personalities. The pacing of the chapters was on point. There are a few minor spelling errors but nothing final editing cannot fix. I liked how the writer slowly introduces the different personalities of the main character. Her brashness is refreshing even though she's in the requested 'character' of her client. I will read more of the writer's work. This new take on the hooker/client story in a supernatural world is different, I like it. I do agree that this writer's strongest trait is the uniqueness of her story, and editing should help with her grammar and spelling. The writer's help request is maintaining interest. The only thing that comes to mind is frequent updates, so you don't lose those interested in your story. Abd by the way, I love the cover. Thank you.

Comments: One of the first things I noticed while reading your story, is the constant switching between past and present tense. If you're like me, I tend to dictate in past tense, but narrate my books in present, so I manage to get myself confused a lot! But, one thing I've found that helps me is, once I'm done with each paragraph, going back and reading the same passage aloud to see if it works. For me, that seems to help minimize that particular problem greatly.

Also, there are a lot of run-on sentences, or sentences that seem to be missing a key word needed for the reader to understand what you, the writer, are trying to get across.

I'll give you an example of all three with the third paragraph from Chapter 1. It say,

"Weirdly, it makes the five-o-clock shadow more prominent, at no point has he removed his sunglasses, and to be fair neither have I."

You might can try something like this instead:

"Weirdly, this new look, makes the five o'clock shadow on his face more prominent. At no point, since walking inside has he removed his sunglasses, but, to be fair, neither have I."

Overall, I think the plot of the story is a tad slow to develop at first, but eventually introducing just enough of a twist to the fundamental elements to hook any reader! I must admit though, I found it kinda hard to relate to either of the main characters through the first six chapters. I wish you would have gone a little more into detail regarding how Delilah ended up becoming a call girl to the Supernatural during the beginning also.

Other than that, I really enjoyed reading this story! It has a good balance of both mystery and unanswered questions to hold my interest. Keep up the good work!

Comments: The Year's Package didn't have me at the first chapter, but the first bite had me intrigued. I never thought vampires could be used this way or in this case a prostitute human. You have a unique system when it comes to money, and Magenta is a total mystery to me which I feel like she wil be back in the story to cause a little mayhem for Mae and Dominic, mainly fir Dominic's sake. Anyway I did notice a few grammar mistakes but it wasn't enough like it's a huge problem. However I only read four chapters. I'm not sure about rather the story maintains my interest as I didn't get a chance to read further, but so far the story has my interests. Some tips I would give is to keep sine things a mystery like if he lies to her about her being in danger. Don't right out let him tell her. Let the attack on them surprise her instead.

Comments: Reading the description, I wasn't that into it and that eager to start reading. I felt like the story of a prostitute for supernatural beings wouldn't be that interesting, I guess. But I actually enjoyed the first 3 chapters. I will continue reading, but being close to the deadline, I felt the need to finally submit my review. First off, I would definitely read more of this author's work as grammer and expression are really good. The storyline flows flawlessly and there are no gaps. Other than that, the writer uses a wide variety of words to tell her story in a interesting and intriguing manner. The characters are plausible, as are their conversations. I imagine people would actually be talking like that. Aside from that, the thoughts and feelings are described well and in detail. However, having read to the end of chapter 3 I realized, that in my opinion the characters could use more depth, more of what makes them special and relatable. For example: The way she reacted in chapter 2, realizing she's not at the hotel anymore. Shouldn't she be like tearing the walls down, demanding answers a lot more aggressive? And when he informed her, that he would be buying her for a year, that was no problem for her lifestyle? Nobody, family or friends at all who she would talk about that first? If she doesn't have anyone, fine, but what about her own life then? The way I understand it, she wouldn't be very free during that time. Doesn't she at least need to think about it? Those were the thoughts running through my head. But like I said, I'll read the rest because I'm curious and like the story so far. Plus, the shower sex scenes was perfectly written and graphic.

Comments: The plot was kinda confusing to me but what intrigues me is the characters. Delilah is somewhat of a shy woman but is very eager to satisfy her clients. Dominic is very possessive and willing to anything to have Delilah by his side without realizing the consequences of actions and how it would effect the balance between the human world and supernatural world. The story is okay but the plot is very confusing.

Comments: So the first thing I have to say is that I thoroughly enjoyed the premise of the story. The supposition of certain tropes in different genres creates a lot of opportunity for unique plot points and beautiful world building and The Yearly Package certainly does not disappoint.

As usual, I'll cover a bit of the technical aspects. I especially enjoyed the amount of showing versus telling, even to introduce us to the characters. I also adore the care put in with all the accompanying aesthetics. The extra touch shows how much the writer cares. In terms of areas for improvement, I believe the story can use an edit, especially around punctuation and certain sentence and paragraph flows. Also watch the overuse of adverbs. Lastly there are some odd word choices such as "I peek the beginnings of a...". That is an odd use of the word peek and something like "I spy..." may be more appropriate. It may be worth to find someone to do line edits for a chapter or two. I personally found that I learned the most looking at someone's edits on my stuff.

Moving on to the broader topics, I want to also discuss the main leads for a moment. Mae is a wonderful character and I look forward to seeing her personality unfold more throughout the book. Again, I also want to compliment again how much showing instead of telling there is in characterizing each of the cast. It's a wonderful strength the author has.

That said, I struggled with the male lead. My favourite part is when Sybil smacks him for inferring she might not have control. It's the only endearing moment of him so far. I'd like to see more of him outside of his thoughts of Mae early on. I want to understand him and see him more fleshed out outside the context of Mae. Or rather, I want to see him as early on as possible not as defined by the female lead.

The last bit I want to offer for consideration is how the mind reading works. I love the formatting used to indicate thoughts he can hear but I want to understand the mechanics more. Can he hear all thoughts? Selective hearing? Or thoughts other people project especially loud? I'd like to understand the rules around this more as a reader.

A quick minor nitpick - white wine is chilled. Red room needs to be enjoyed at room temperature. So at the beginning of "Who Am I?", the author may want to reconsider that.

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the story so far and am looking forward to see how the characters evolve.

Comments: I tried my best in this review since the writer had reviewed a lot of books than me. As mentioned by the author about the weakest traits: Grammar. I noticed there are some grammar changes. I am not good at this, though. Maybe that is the grammar should be used CMIIW. And I also noticed some typos. But it's very little and even we missed it. As the story itself: I am really hooked with the story. Everything seemed perfect. The dialogue, the writing style, and also the words u used. I always learn how to write like you and some authors, honestly. The adding of Author Note with your question, giving another vibe on the story. It's made the reader questioning and wanting to read more. Good Idea. Maybe I will use to my story 😁. For the character: Because the MC is a vampire, yeah he seemed a relatable vampire with a lot of lust. Magenta is more intriguing, is she bad or good. As the FMC, I am not so into her for the six first chapters. I will read more for the rest of the story. Thanks.

Comments: Reading this is actually very interesting as I'm a massive fan of the vampire genre. The concept of a supernatural escort agency providing personnel to high paying supernaturals just works so well and fits with the whole concept perfectly. I've only ever read one other story like it and that one had a supernatural match making service. So this was a nice twist. The description was fairly decent and the characters have a good amount of flesh to them, making them believable. Dominic both makes me cringe and entices me, and he really comes off as an arrogant immortal. Mae fits pretty well with a human trying to maintain some measure of control inside a supernatural world, which leaves me wondering just how long that facade will last before it shatters. As for the request on the grammar, it takes practice, but it's a relatively easy fix. Breaking up sentences into smaller ones where necessary and adding commas and full stops where they're needed. But I haven't seen any of the dreaded there, they're and their mix ups, so that's a positive grammatically. To, too and two are the other ones people tend to mix up. For example this line at the start of your sixth chapter "I sit beside Dominic as we eat, Sybil had done precisely as instructed prompted by Dominic when we were heading back" can easily be edited to "I sit beside Dominic as we eat. (maybe add an emotional descriptive here) Sybil had done precisely as Dominic has instructed; prompted while we were heading back." That's just an example, but I hope it helps. I often go through my own work and change around sentences like that. Overall, a really intriguing story and I will definitely be continuing it while I have the time between contracts.

Comments: 1. How many chapters did you read?

I read the first 4 (Welcome to FolkWhore)

2. What did you think the book was about?

I think the book summary was very clear that Mae is a human prostitute that serves the supernatural and will be hired for a year by a client. It seems that she may be in for quite the experience with her new client while also running into trouble with receiving so much money.

3. Did you feel that the book fulfilled your expectations?

Yes, the book delivered as promised and delved into a world of prostitution and the supernatural (vampires, faeries, witches, mind-reading, etc.) I think the concept is very unique.

4. What about the plot?

The plot pulled me in because it has an element of the unexpected. Mae (or Delilah) starts out as if it's just a regular date with another Jon, but even the first chapter establishes that this will be no ordinary date. The next thing we know she's waking up and unsure of where she is, how long she's been sleeping, etc. It turns out that Dominic had such a good time that he wants to keep her for a year but is it truly just for food and sex? I wonder who these other girls are that his servant/mentor Sybil mentioned are "starting to talk". The plot is intriguing and I'm genuinely eager to see where the story goes.

5. Do the characters seem real and believable?

Yes, great characterization. Moving back and forth between Mae's and Dominic's points of view allows the reader to get inside both of their heads and connect with the story. Mae's sassy personality shines through, even a bit of humor, while Dominic's stiff, rigid nature and his need to be in control comes across clearly.

6. How was the pacing of the chapters you read?

The pacing was good, the chapters weren't too long or too short. There were some issues with spelling, grammar, and sentence structure that interrupted the flow. Specifically, I noticed some run-on sentences where I think they could have been phrased better through the use of commas or splitting one sentence into two. Also, some of the sentences could have been structured better and have issues with changes in tense or improper word-use. Overall, however, the errors were not so much in abundance that it took away from the story and it was an enjoyable read.

7. How was the description of the chapters you read?

I thought your descriptive language was good. You take care to describe people's appearances (tattoos on the skin, eyes, hair, etc.) as well as their tone of voice, gestures, and expressions. These are all important to make a story richer than just plain dialogue. You also did a good job describing the surroundings.

8. Describe what you liked or disliked about the writer's style?

I enjoyed that you shift character point-of-view so the reader can connect with both main characters in the story. Also, the shifting is very clearly indicated at the beginning of the chapter and not just haphazardly skipping around and making the reader confused. Additionally, I thought your erotic scene writing was excellent. The shower scene was hot! My only suggestion is to just tighten up a little on your grammar and writing in the proper tense but otherwise, I can't complain. Great story.

9. Would you read more of the author's work?

Yes, definitely.

10. Comment on their strongest and weakest writing trait along with their help request and give overall thoughts.

You listed your strongest writing trait as "uniqueness" and I completely agree. I've never seen a story such as this one, I think the concept is fresh and original and definitely will keep readers interested. Although there were some grammar issues, it was not enough to take away from the overall story. My best tips for improving grammar are using the spell-check function (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.), finding a beta, and also always making sure to give your chapters a once over by reading them out loud. Often our brains will skip over errors when we read silently but reading out loud will catch everything, especially sentence structure and run-ons. I'm looking forward to reading more about what happens between Mae and Dominic. Thanks for sharing!

Comments: The story is definitely something that I haven't seen before, and is a very interesting concept with a lot of potential.

I enjoyed the author's creativity, especially her play on words. Where the character's interaction was concerned, I felt like it was good though there was room for a bit more depth as a few more words of description could have really helped illustrate the actions better.

Overall, her general descriptions were good, but it's clear from her writing that she has a lot more to offer and sometimes I felt like she was holding back.

The storyline was so gripping that it intrigued me from the first chapter, enough for me to keep reading after the first few chapters as I wanted to see where things were going.

The tense changes were a bit confusing in parts and did disrupt the flow though, so that took away some of the enjoyment for me.

I felt like after 19 chapters there should have been more "oomph", if that makes sense? As the book started out with such a bang and then the pace sort of fizzled out and I'm excitedly waiting for the next big bang.

Like the first 10 chapters were captivating, then I kept waiting for more, and it started to feel like the story was dragging.

Nonetheless, the author definitely has something special and unique on her hands and I look forward to seeing what she does with it.

Comments: What did you think the book was about?

A hooker who caters to vampires meets 50 shades of grey

Did you feel the book fulfilled your expectations?

Yes. I think you did a very good job sticking to your summary of events. The story starts out intriguing with the two in a hallway and her leading her male counterpart to the bedroom. There was lots of action and showing all at a pace that kept me wanting to read on so I could learn more about Mae and what she was doing there.

What about the plot? Does it pull you in? Or did you feel you had to force yourself to read the book?

I'll be upfront and say this isn't really my kind of story. That said, the way you have written the story and formulated your plot was well done and kept me curious. I didn't feel as though I was being forced to read anything. In fact, I was intrigued and found your story line likeable and relatable despite the paranormal basis.

Do the characters seem real and believable? We're you able to relate to them as a person and their predicaments? To what extend do they remind you of yourself or someone you know?

I think because the story is paranormal not all characters can be down to earth relatable. Since Mae is human I think I connected with her the most, but I did appreciate the mysterious nature of Dominic. You introduced him in such a way that I could help but get chills up and down my spine whenever he spoke to her. Also, I think you have developed Mae's character wonderfully in the sense that she has human flaw just like the rest of us, and makes mistakes and has the normal type of internal monologues that we all do. She is funny and witty and I really liked reading her characters. I also liked how you showed her repeating the rules of her job back to herself, as if she was still unsure of herself despite her slick demeanour with Dominic. This was a very cool part of the story.

How was the pacing of the chapters?

I thought the pacing was well thought out. Chapter three brought out the main focus of your story summary; the 800 thousand dollars deposited into her bank account. With a story like this, it's important to get to the point early on to capture the reader's interest and force them to learn more, and you've done that here.

How was the description of the chapters?

I thought your formatting was done well. I will say that I didn't get much visual description of setting. I think you could describe the hotel more, and the room. Also the smells and sounds. How does Dominic smell? How do his lips taste? How does his skin feel? Since he's a vampire is he very cold? Very pale? What about Mae? Is she cold? Nervous? Sweating? All of these things will give us a better sense of the world you are building.

Describe what you liked or disliked about the writers style. Why?

I really enjoyed the cool mysterious vibe of this whole story. You've done a great job creating mystery around your characters, especially Dominic. I don't have much to touch on here, because your writing style flows well, you don't veer off topic and stick to the point, which is nice.

Would you read more of the authors work?

Yes I definitely would.

Strongest writing trait: Formatting, story flow and writing style.

Weakest: I wouldn't say weak, but I think you can focus more on characterization, feelings, and setting

Help Request: Maintaining Interest

So I think the most important thing for you to do is give us more information on Dominic as the chapters progress. Also, progress the relationship between Mae and Dominic. I also want to know how Mae feels about being "purchased" so to speak. Does she want to stay? Is she intrigued by Dominic or is she just too scared to leave? Just focus on Characterization and you won't have to worry about maintaining interest.

Comments: I went into The Year Package intrigued by the premise. It's summarized to the readers clearly in the first few chapters. Mae is a human escort and is paid a very hefty sum to serve Dominic, an arrogant businessman, for a year. The drastic increase in her bank account ultimately draws suspicion and prompts an investigation that could jeopardize her and expose her line of work. I liked the idea of intertwining vampirism and sex work. It gives it a nice fantastical edge to the plot.

The descriptions were generally well done and there is an evident focus on character development, so we luckily get to know both Mae and Dominic's personalities only a few chapters in. I love character driven stories like this one; it makes it easier to invest in these characters because I'm able to connect with them.

I think the writing is strong and captures both the scenes, as well as the emotions, though there were some parts where punctuation was missing so the sentences were confusing to the point where I had to reread to comprehend it. Some of the quotes were also followed by a period when the author used a dialogue tag. In these cases there should be a comma. These errors weren't so excessive to be distracting but they do require some editing. I know the author said her weakest trait is grammar. I don't believe grammar itself is necessarily the issue. I think it's more about polishing up punctuation, using semicolons and commas when they are needed.

As brought up in the aforementioned comments regarding the characters, there is a base of decent development. However, Dominic is not a likeable character. He's not even some miserable, bitter lead I find myself rooting for despite his imperfections and transgressions. He treats everyone like garbage, most of all Mae, and is very self-obsessed. His relationship with his family is lousy from what I've read and he seems to have the impression that money can resolve anything. He doesn't feel remorse for the ramifications caused by a drug administered by his company that led to a drug overdose. He starts a project to prevent this from happening again but only to stroke his already inflated ego. He even thinks he's the 'King of Seattle'. Everything about him is also cliche. I feel like I've read this character in so many other stories. I don't think that characters like this should not be created, but they often have traits that make them unique and stand out. I might have to read on to see if he's a true flawed anti-hero.

There was one thing that baffled me. Dominic tells Mae that he's going to call her by her real name instead of Delilah, but in the chapter 'Medicine' the name Delilah is mentioned again. I didn't get this. Does he know someone else with this name? Or does he revert back to calling Mae this? This wasn't clarified at all so I didn't really get it.

Mae is an interesting character and I loved the way her job was outlined when details of the year package was given to Dominic. It went very in depth which I hadn't really anticipated. I would have liked her to have some more opinionated and strong-willed thoughts when it was in her perspective. Maybe as the story moves forward she'll find her voice.

The last few chapters I read threw me off a little bit. Up until chapter seven the book alternates between Mae and Dominic's point of view in first person. Then out of nowhere it changes to third person when Rebekah and Conrad are introduced. This type of perspective switch is not smooth and it's never necessary. The book should have still introduced these two characters and kept it first person to stay consistent with the narration.

I would have loved some vampire lore and background on Dominic in this book. I thought I would get that because there were several mythical creatures where Mae works and part of Dominic's reasoning for choosing her was so he could draw blood from her when he wants. But this, I felt, went to the backburner quickly. I get that Dominic is a vampire who wants a semblance of a normal life where his true identity isn't conspicuous, but I think that the fantasy aspect could be a little bit stronger.

I would definitely read more of the author's work. Her style is captivating.

Comments: So, first time for me that I read supernatural erotica. I'm not really comfy with vampires, blood and stuff to be honest.

Yet at first I was not really a fan of Delilah/Mae. I found her a bit arrogant. But you have to keep in mind she is swimming a world with bigger sharks. Clearly I would do the same in her spot.

Not a fan of Dominic personally but his persona is great book wise. Pretty much like the other character.

There is something close to cinema when you read this book. There is light, shadows, motion... each chapter a scene you could picture in front of your inner eyes vividly, the narration doing the perfect job of revealing the little details exactly when it needs it.

And this is exactly what keeps me reading it. I didn't have to be a fan of the characters to get hooked this time. I was hooked by what the book was giving me, a world to dive in. I could feel the heat, the sweat and the rest.

Great read.

Comments: 1) What did you think the book was about?

I originally thought the book might be about a woman working as a sex worker for supernatural beings who makes a long term arrangement with a client.

2) Did you feel the book fulfilled your expectations?

I was actually pretty surprised. I like the fantasy aspect of it— the entire exchange between Delilah and Dominic, talking about the invoice of her services was a creative part in the story. It pulled me in and made me want to keep reading.

3) What about the plot? Does it pull you in? Or did you have to force yourself to read the book?

Definitely. I took to the plot quickly. I like the way the relationship started with their initial sexual encounter. However, I think more dialogue between the characters after the sex scene and before the next morning would help establish why Dominic is so drawn to Delilah.

4) Do the characters seem real and believable?

Yes! So far I like Delilah and Dominic. Both of them are pretty mysterious and there isn't a ton of inner monologuing going on between the two of them, but I'm curious to learn more about Delilah as a character and see more of her personality as I keep reading.

5) How was the pacing of the chapters?

The chapters are pretty short, but it's not necessarily a bad thing, I just think that hearing the MC's thoughts and opinions (that inner monologue) in between dialogue will help readers better understand the characters. So far, Dominic seems to have more of an inner monologue than Delilah so we hear more of his little thoughts and opinion on things.

6) How was the description of the chapters?

I personally think that the description in itself is fine, but it'd be nice as a reader to hear more of what the author thinks about that description. For example during sex scenes, more description of what Delilah thinks about her encounter with the man.

7) Describe what you like and dislike about the writer's style.

I personally don't have a problem with the writing style. I prefer first person and I like that the story is dual perspective.

8) Would you read more of the author's work?

Yes, I would and I'm excited to keep reading. I want to see how Dominic and Delilah's relationship continues to develop.

9) Strongest Writing Trait:

Creativity, character development.

Weakest Writing Trait:

Staying in tenses (past/present), balance between describing the events and the MC's reactions to those events/what they think.
