Chapter 53 : The Thumber's orcubulum

"The Protector of fire, Ignis and the Protector of light, Lumeira. Two of the strongest forces in the magical dimension is fire and light."

Timothy and Emile gasped and stared at Ermand in awe. Ermand frowned, his eyes casted on the floor. The scene where he was scolded by Professor Chestnut for not knowing the names of the Protectors of fire and light came to his mind. He didn't know the names of his parents and who they were while all of the students knew. He was blinded by his own barriers.

"Are they alive?"

"Of course. They live young and healthy for five hundred years unless they get killed by a force greater than them. However, Protectors die one way or the other. Ignis and Lumeira were last found eighteen years back, Ermand."

"My age? Where did they go?"

"None among the Protector society knows about it and so none of the Spellcaster know. Now that you gained you Aslehm, you'll be reconsidered to attend your finals. Today was clan studies, right? It'll be rescheduled for tomorrow. Now go and take rest," he said, tapping on Ermand's and Emile's shoulders at last.

Timothy and Emile nodded and walked forward, leaving the room. Ermand, who was behind them, turned back to the Professor.

"Professor Lewcent," he called.

"Yes, Ermand."

"Odin was Odeoris. How come you don't know that?"

"I'm perplexed about the same. I didn't know that when he entered into the hall and sat on the chair with all of the Professors and me sitting alongside and opposite to him, that he was Odoeris, the greatest mastermind of evil spellcasting."

"If I'm the Potestum, his next move will be..."

"After you, Ermand. And you should learn to take control of the privilege of immense power you have. Since you're the Potestum, which is quite strange, you have immortal powers."

Ermand nodded. He couldn't consume more of what the High Professor would say. All of it was confusing for him. He exited the room, leaving Professor Lewcent alone.

He wanted to ask him about the voice that echoed in his head several times but he wasn't ready for more surprises.

Zaugustus walked toward the cube, he touched the little bits of blue ash on it and rubbed it between his fingers and stared at the window above him.

"Odoeris. Finally, you have shown up yourself after all these years of hiding. This time, you will not stand high, for Ermand Odistte will never be an easy play," he whispered.

"I'm not an Odistte!" Ermand shouted at his friends.

"It is a rare privilege, Ermand. Think of all the changes hereafter. You can even slap on Damien and his father's face!" Timothy told.

"I don't want that rare privilege that I acquired from those I hate. And no one except you, Emile, Charlie, Edwin and Professor Lewcent will know about this secret-"

"Secret!" Emile interjected. "You want to keep this a secret, Ermand?"

"I've a rational reason behind this. Think. If all of you know that I'm the Potestum Odoeris is after, and also an Odistte. It'll cost your life, not mine because Odeoris won't destroy the Potestum. Fortunately or unfortunately, the destruction he had created all over Iyerth only affected others not me. Now that the truth is revealed, he knows what is at stake. So, I want the truth enclosed between us."

Emile and Timothy remained silent for a long time. They realized that Ermand had a point in all of what he had told them.

"The thing that Professor Lewcent gave me and Charlie when we first entered his office with Ermand was worthy, right? Good that Charlie smashed the sphere he gave when all of us realized things were different," Timothy broke the silence.

"I'll have to remain a Chisel in front of everybody, maybe forever. But one thing is for sure, I'll never let him have the Potestum. Professor Zaugustus Lewcent told me that he's a notorious man known to all. But I don't understand what's the actual use of a Postestum, what is it exactly?"

"If an exceptional and strong magic power or secret spell is enclosed in an object, the object is called a Potestum. Potestums are usually objects, but here it was you, Ermand - a person. A living being can never be a Potestum. Did the High Professor give you any hint on that?" Emile asked after the explanation.

"No. He told me the same. It was strange that I am the Potestum..."

"So you know who Odoeris is too, Emile?" Timothy asked, sitting near to Edwin on the bed.

"Yes. There had been news twenty years ago that he had disappeared or maybe dead. Now, he was back. Maybe, I can give you more information, Ermand."

"What?"

"Didn't you have all those pain at times when you fell to the ground, wriggling and screaming?"

"Yes. I even had it just when the destruction was happening."

"If I'm not wrong. The orbuculum in his hands was the reason for Ermand's pain," he asserted, rubbing his chin. He got up from the bed and dug out a hardback book from his wooden chest.

He placed it on his table and started turning pages. Ermand and Timothy gathered around him.

"Finding the Thumber's orbuculum, known for its accurate prediction although difficult for man to perceive, have been a quest for the Spellcaster ever since it was known after the death of Cholker Thumber, the founder. It shows where anything is by putting an invisible and untouchable connection between itself and the thing the master, the owner of the orbuculum, is searching for," he read and turned at his friends.

"The Thumber's orbuculum would never go wrong but what had gone wrong was that Odoeris never thought Ermand was the Potestum. He might have had suspicions whether Ermand has it but he would never have thought it was Ermand himself, none of us would."

"So, that's why he asked for my crystal in the name of his sick mother?"

"The crystal one acquires with that test will be deeply connected to the person and I'm assuming that if he used the crystal in some sort of way to confirm whether you truly have the Potestum or not, he might be confused about the results he found."

"What results?" Timothy asked.

"The orbuculum showed him the result of the Potestum being somewhere within the boundaries of this college, the most probable reason for him to disguise as a student. He might have believed that it must be somewhere in the building. Later, he suspected Ermand of possessing the Potestum with him that confused him with the result the crystal gave him. The crystal might've shown something else."

"I didn't get you," Ermand frowned.

"In other words, the crystal showed him that Ermand doesn't possess anything like a Potestum with him with an underlying fact that Ermand himself is the Potestum, which he failed to take notice of. The final pain you experienced, Ermand, is because of his last test on the orbuculum. He must've believed the orbuculum more than Ermand's crystal."

"And the destruction he caused?" Timothy asked, staring at Emile.

"The destruction over Tawarn is a mystery to me. But the fact that it was all around Iyerth was to create a barrier against the world leaders' suspicion of the strange phenomenon happening only in Tawarn. This would also help as a distraction to whatever he was doing."

"So, he must have been busy cooking different plans while we all thought he had gone to take care of his non-existing mother," Timothy guessed.

"Precisely. Moreover, the pain wasn't due to the invisible rope of the orbuculum, Ermand. Since you're an Odistte, you have immortal and vital powers which defends you without even you knowing it. The pain was a side effect to your body's defense. I read it from one of the books in the library. I actually didn't have any intentions with reading it but it kind of intrigued me to read. Fortunately, it came useful to make a fair conclusion now, although there are mysteries clutching somewhere."

Ermand processed all of Emile's words. It was quite difficult to understand but somehow he could relate through the situation he had gone through.

"I know of somebody who can disclose the mystery," he whispered.
