Chapter 42 : Following the Qorder

Ermand turned his direction away from them and hurried toward Jack's dormitory. He found his brother having a good time with his friends with all of them sitting on one of their beds. Ermand drew a deep breath and exhaled, closing his eyes before knocking on the opened door beside him.

"Ermand!" Jack greeted, walking to him, smiling.

Ermand didn't reply, instead he showed Jack the crumbled paper in his hands.

"What's this?"

Ermand didn't reply again, he pushed the paper onto his hands. Jack took the crumpled paper and unfolded it in a proper manner and read the whole knocketer. He knitted his brows after reading.

"What's wrong?"

"Are you guys hiding something from me, Jack?"

"Hide from you. What is it that we should hide from you, Ermand?"

"I'm not part of you."

"Ermand, don't be childish. Tell me what the problem is."

"The knocketer is the problem. I can read mum's mind through these lines and I bet she's not sincere with the writing. She's hiding something from me, maybe all of us."

"Why do you think all of this?"

"I thought you'd understand me," Ermand said, his eyes narrowed at Jack.

"I don't understand what you're even trying to imply-" Jack paused whatever he was going to say.

Ermand shook his head and walked out of the dormitory. Both of his hands were clenched into a tight fist. He didn't dare to turn back at his brother calling back after him. He know he's being childish and stupid but he was not willing to admit his suspicion was completely false.

"Ermand Chisel! Are you alive in my class?" Professor Chestnut roared, bringing Ermand back to the class. His mind was elsewhere, he was still thinking about the knocketer and the encounter with Jack the last day. He surmised Mrs. Chisel was keeping something away from him. The dreams he had been having were not some ordinary dream. Most of them came true except for the nightmares. But he believes it could come alive too.

"Are you hearing me, Chisel?" Professor Chestnut shouted at the top of his voice that it could bring any child in deep sleep back to the present situation.

"Sorry, sir. I-I didn't hear you," he apologized after standing up.

"You didn't hear me? I am amused."

The Professor's words were followed by a background of laughs and murmurs. Ermand bent his head down when the Professor glared at him, his lips in a thin line.

"Forgive me, sir."

"Name me the Protectors of fire and light."

Ermand's lips trembled. He didn't know the answer. He was sure the Professor would probably throw him out of the class with a lot of humiliation.

"I-I..."

"Their names don't start with I, Ermand."

"Uh, I have no idea about their names, Professor."

"I should be banging my head against the wall over there, Chisel. And do you know why?"

Ermand didn't answer. His eyes were still stuck on the desk.

"Teaching hopeless students like you has become a revulsive job for me these days."

"Forgive me, Professor. I won't-"

"Damien Qorder, give me the answer."

"The honourable Ignis and Lumeira," The Qorder answered, smirking at Ermand.

"Sit."

Ermand didn't bother to get lost in his deep thoughts then. He scribbled all of the important points into his notebook without even turning a glance at his notebook, his eyes and ears were on the Professor and his words.

"The highest rank known, the Odistte clan, cannot be inherited from ancestry or job but by power and birth purity. An Odistte is he or she who was born for a protector or an Odistte. A protector is a Spellcaster who takes care of a single special element in the existence of our Spellcaster society. Note that they are born with the privilege and not inherited. They can be the son or the daughter of a low grade clanship member or a high grade. They withhold immense power so as to maintain and protect purity and peace among people in the history since the Protectors were known. Galvnal is the first known fully specialized Protector. The Odistte clan can be broadly classified into pure and impure Odisttes. Pure Odisttes are those who are born for protectors while impure Odisttes are those who are born for a pure Odistte or an impure Odistte. In simple terms, only the child of Protectors can be an Odistte and his or her child cannot be a pure Odistte.

"Pure Odisttes are tremendously powerful than the Protectors and could be the peacemaker and the troublemaker at the same time, all of it depends on their personality type. Don't think that you'll be a Protector out of nothing. To be chosen as a Protector you should be extremely lucky as well as good hearted and powerful, for which, I'm definitely not sure for you people. As for pure Odisttes, they're extremely rare. At this, we stop the discussion about the Odisttes. Next, we go into a brief description on the next high clan, the Qorders."

The Qorders present in the class suddenly became interested in the class. They leaned to hear the Professor as if knowing a deep secret that is to be unveiled.

"The reason behind Qorders to be classified as the highest clan after Odisttes has a significant reason behind it. They're known to acquire special powers under their control. Qorders, hence are mostly given the preference to rule the government. They can take maximum use from simple spells and hence are more prominent to be chosen for being a Defender. They know how to take the right decisions and sort legal and illegal laws in our society and this is how they should be respected in every manner," the Professor gave Ermand a deadly glare after the last words.

He knew the reason for it. It has been all over in and out of the university since the time Ermand stood up for Edwin in front of Damien Qorder.

At the end of the class, Ermand was told to write an essay no less than five thousand words based on the Qorder clan. He was told it was punishment for his inattentiveness. But Ermand felt that emphasizing on the Qorder clan is some kind of the Professor's way to humiliate him for the incident that took place a few months ago.

"You can come to my room in the teacher's dormitory and submit it. If you fail to submit it before ten tonight, prepare to write an essay double the word count," he stated before leaving the classroom.

"Don't worry. I'll help you, Ermand. Next time, don't think elsewhere during his class," Emile patted on his shoulder after packing some books into his satchel.

"Thanks," Ermand mumbled.

"I can't believe he's still roaming alone," Charlie said, leaning his head out of their classroom. He was watching Damien exit without anybody accompanying him.

"I bet he's up to something," Timothy whispered, slamming his palms against Emile's stack of books.

"Let's follow him," Charlie suggested. To their relief and dismay, Emile was not ready for it. After stacking his books in order, he made his way to the mess hall.

They followed Damien who almost tiptoed into the relatively smallest hall in the college which was detached from the connection of all the other halls. Although, sound could barely escape from the petite room.

"I noticed that at times in Professor Chestnut's class, he had been doing something queer, making sure no one was watching his business," Charlie whispered.

Damien turned around while the four boys hid themselves behind the fat colonnades.

"Don't speak," Timothy mouthed to all of them. The three boys responded with a nod.

When they peeked their heads near the doors of the small room after Damien sneaked in, the wonders they watched made their jaws drop. The four boys watched Damien's movement in horror and shock.
