Chapter 36 : The Chisels' knocketer

Ermand broke off from his sleep when he was interrupted by a coughing sound. He raised himself from his bed.

Edwin tried muffling his cough but it went futile. Timothy turned on the lights and removed his blanket.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

"Will he continue coughing if he was alright?" Charlie said.

"I spotted his coughing in the evening but I thought it must be minor coughing," Emile told, rising from his bed.

"You cannot go to a Healer at this time of the night."

"Charlie's right. But we can do something, I mean, Emile can, " Timothy suggested.

"What do you mean, " Edwin whimpered between his sneezes.

"Well, I don't know much about healing, but my mother was a Healer and I learnt some tacks from her. Are you feeling nauseous or something like that?" Emile inquired, jumping from his bead and moved toward his trunk.

"No, I--" He coughed again. "I'm feeling drowsy and cold around me."

"Alright then. Are you allergic to Beetlebee flowers?" He asked, scouring through different vials of coloured potions.

"No. But I'm allergic to their pollen."

"That doesn't count. Most of us are allergic to Beetlebee pollen. This one just consists of its petals that are dried and crushed to prepare this solution. You'd have to drink a spoon of this once in a day."

"For how long?"

"Two days if you're starting to drink tomorrow, in the morning, after breakfast."

"Thank you. How much should I pay?"

"Pay? Edwin, you're my friend. You should never pay for it. Aha!" Emile finally pulled out a vial of some pale green coloured potion inside. "It sort of tastes like grass."

"Eww and wow!" Timothy said. "You should definitely take a double degree."

"But I'm thinking of being an Innovator after I complete my Defense degree. Learning Inventions and Discoveries was my passion since I was young, " he explained, passing the vial to Edwin.

"I was just joking, " Timothy shrugged.

Emile responded with an unamused face and walked toward his bed.

"Tomorrow, it's Professor Derek Chestnut's class. Make sure you take a glance at your textbooks, " He muttered before resting his head on the pillow.

Ermand was again interrupted in his sleep. When he woke up, he found that he was in his old house in Fingercut street. It looked as good as it was before the streak fell. He slowly got up from his bed and sneaked out of his room and into Jack's. He watched his brother sleeping soundly on his bed that was broken after the streak hit their house. He immediately climbed down the stairs and opened the main door and gazed at the starry night sky. The sky looked tranquil and splendour with the full moonlight in the dark atmosphere where the stars were adorned as embedded pearls.

Ermand noticed one of the stars which was too bright and red in colour that gradually grew tremendous in size. It looked like a shooting star speeding toward their neighbourhood. The size of the star grew bigger and bigger. It was then Ermand noticed that it wasn't a star but a streak of red light that could hit them any moment.

Ermand's fear became real when the burning fleck of light hit the houses near to his, creating a boisterous noise. It was followed by screams and crying of people. Ermand turned left and right, unaware of what to do. He has to inform his parents and brothers about this.

"Ermand, hello?" Timothy tapped on Ermand's shoulder and shook him.

Ermand opened his eyes with a gasp. He was relieved to find that it all was a dream but he doubts if it was a dream after all.

"You got a knocketer from your parents," he informed and placed an envelope on the side table near to his bed.

A knocketer?

A thought occurred to Ermand.

Yes, I should write them a knocketer!

He immediately tore the envelope and pulled out the page inside.

Ermie,

We hope you are doing fine in Agledon. Sorry for sending the knocketer after three months since you left, we had been in the rush of sorting everything here. We couldn't find the right time to write a letter to the three of you since I had also started going for a job that's around two miles from UpHill block. Now, I don't want you to bother about that, Ermie. Also, quit your job in the café and try catching up with the academics, alright?

Although we only have a few neighbors, they're all very nice and pleasant. We even started gardening carrots and cabbages! All thanks to Greatman Chestnut. He lent us his piece of plot in the back of our yard to cultivate whatever we would like to. Even though we're far from the city, the atmosphere here is pleasant and serene. Still, I miss our house in Fingercut street. How is it going there? Are you doing fine? Remember to focus on gaining the Aslehm. By now, you might've known how important it is to achieve your Aslehm. Don't get into fights or troubles, dear. And do tell me if Jack is up to his old tricks again. I hope you do well in your present and future.

P.S : We miss you so much, Ermie.

Ermand sighed while tears welled up in his eyes. It has been three months since he was separated from his family. How he misses his parents and the cheerful atmosphere in his tiny but cozy house.

But it was time that he must learn to live alone without anyone leading him the way. He has to lead his own way. He immediately pulled a page and a pen from the drawer under his side table and dragged a chair near to him.

"Ermand, are you not going to have your breakfast?" Charlie asked, who just came out after bathing.

"No. I'm not feeling hungry," Ermand replied, scrawling something on the page before him.

"Alright," Charlie said, shrugging and exited the room after slipping into his uniform.

Ermand read the knocketer after he finished it. There was hope filled between each gap between the words he wrote.

Dear Mum and dad,

I'm all fine and I hope to hear the same from your part. Jack is doing good too (not into his tricks). Now I'm aware of the importance of gaining the Alsehm. Greatman Chestnut's son, Timothy, has gained his Aslehm yesterday. It displeases me to hear that you're working again and you're asking me to quit my job. I'm sorry mum, but I can't. Also, I wish I could see you both as soon as possible. I would've visited a long time ago if our house wasn't destroyed. I miss everything we had.

Today, I had a dream about the streak fall and it hit our neighborhood. I know dreams are equal to faint illusions but I'm curious about what Mr. Coop has told you about the terrifying dreams I had. Dad told me that he'd say but neither I did get a chance to ask him nor did he tell me. Can you please explain to me what the exact reason is? Plus, I wanted to talk about a strange phenomenon that has happened to me a few months ago which you might not be willing to believe but trust me, I'm not lying.

I love you both.

Ermand let out a heavy breath after he enclosed the page in an envelope and got up from the chair to pass it to Agledon's official Knockman.
