Twenty One
The rest of the week had flown by. We spent it in vineyards and horseback riding. Carter was there for every journey. His flirtatious comments never leaving as he continued to express his love for me. I couldn't help but smile every time I saw him. It was like things had completely changed. It's been a rough two weeks and I was ready to go home but a part of me didn't want to leave Carter. There was something about being together again that made me forget about everything at home. I wanted the bridal shop to pick itself up and move to California. I imaged selling wedding dresses by the waves of the pacific ocean.
I sighed as I collapsed on the bed. The dreams of spending the rest of the summer here with Carter made me weak. The idea of going back to where it would soon be getting chilly in the mornings. The snow was coming within the next few months and I wasn't ready for it. I knew we could fly back for Christmas with my mother as I wasn't sure I would be able to handle a Christmas without snow.
I shook my head looking at the man that was taking a nap on the sheets next to me. We had stayed out all night watching the stars in the mountains as they fell from the sky. Clara and David had really hit it off as well, spending the last nights together before we packed to head home. But now it was time. Our trip had been extended and it wasn't possible to do it again. WE needed to get back to the shop. I'm sure my mother wasn't happy with me with how long she'd been in charge of the shop.
My phone started ringing, the noise echoing through the room stirring Carter from his sleep. He yawned leaning up on the bed as he stretched his arms out. I dove for my phone grabbing it to hit the answer button.
"Hello?" I answer quietly trying not to disturb him much more. Jumping up from the bed I head out onto the balcony to talk to the person that had called.
"Hi sweetie," It was my mother on the other side of the line. I'd felt bad because I hadn't told her about Carter and I hanging out. I'd told about his engagement but there hadn't been much time to explain to her that I had been going on dates with him every second possible.
I didn't know how she would feel.
"How is the shop?" I asked her, my finger drawing circles on the banister of the balcony as I waited for her to answer.
"It's been busy, I'm so glad you guys are coming home soon, I'm ready to get back to just focusing on alterations and letting my sweet girl do the boring business stuff," She chuckled, her voice sounding tired on the other end of the phone. I smiled to myself watching the water crash against the sand. I knew she hated the business part of things. She hated trying to cut the paychecks and the schedule. She hated answering emails, and the phones. My mother was very much the artistic part of our duo.
"Yeah I'm sorry we have been gone so long," I muttered, my mother wasn't expecting to be in charge of the shop for two weeks but Clara and I just weren't ready to leave. Extending our vacation had been an attempt to save my vacation from falling into the depth of hell and burning. The first half had been such a shit show that I wanted to just forget it. We did a do over and it ended up better than I could have ever imagined. There was nothing more fun than spending time with your best friends in a beautiful state doing things you could never do back home.
But it was time to go home, and as much as I didn't like that, it had to happen and I knew it did. I felt sad leaving this beautiful place. Sure I lived close to the ocean in New York but it wasn't really a big part of our life. We weren't a beach town, we were a huge never ending city. You have everything you could ever need all in one block.
"Hey, you deserved it sweetie," My mother sounded sincere as she spoke and this made me feel better. I knew she would make it through the two weeks we were gone but I was sure there was plenty of stuff for me to catch up on. It was just a matter of getting my things out of Andrews house that scared me. I didn't want to see him.
"Have you heard from Andrew?" I questioned, hoping my mom would have some kind of information for me. I could almost hear her shake her head no as she let out a quick sigh.
"No, it's been quiet here. I'm so sad to hear you guys have broken up but honestly, I feel it was for the better," She was trying her best to say something that would help. I knew it was for the best but it didn't matter how many times I was told that it didn't make the situation hurt any less. I had broken his heart.
I wondered what he was doing right now. How would he feel if he knew Carter was currently laying in my bed asleep from all the wild adventures we had gone on in the last few days. Cliff diving, horseback riding, snorkeling... we were having the perfect honeymoon vacation and it should have been with Andrew. Just the thought of that killed me though because there was no one I would have rather done all of those things with. Andrew was fun to be around sometimes, but Carter lit something inside me that showed me I could do anything I wanted.
"Are you still there?" My mother asks. I nod my head looking over the water as I try to catch my breath. I was really leaving this place. We were leaving early tomorrow morning and then I wasn't sure what was going to happen. Would Carter and I stay friends, or would things just go back to normal. How would he manage to keep up with me in New York while he was finishing his last semester of medical school? How would Clara take the idea of having to leave David behind?
"Yeah I'm still here, sorry. I'm caught up in the ocean and wondering about Clara," I chuckled to myself softly but my mother didn't seem to find it as funny as I had.
"What do you mean you are worried about Clara? What is wrong with Clara?" I didn't know how to explain it to my mother and I wasn't good at lying. I hadn't told her Carter and I had been practically together every second possible this trip. She didn't know he had been along for every single one of our trips. Every adventure, restaurant, night walks on the beach. Carter had been there for everything.
"Carter introduced her to this boy named David and they seemed to have hit it off really... and I mean really well," I paused waiting for my mother to have an issue with anything I had said. I hoped she wouldn't but I knew she would question me.
"Carter did what? When? When he proposed to Kylie? What do you mean they are getting along really well, Erin you need to tell me these things," My mother seemed like she was angry but also just really confused. She wasn't sure what I was talking about. I honestly wasn't sure what I as either. I heard Carter start to stir in the bedroom and instead of having to explain another awkward situation to her I decided I needed to just get off the phone.
"I will tell you all about it when we get home tomorrow night, I promise. I gotta go get Clara up so we can start packing and check out of our room," I quickly hung up the phone before she could say anything else. My heart was racing as Carter walks out onto the balcony to join me. Slowly wrapping his arms around my waist he bends down kissing my neck softly. My body turns to flames as I melt into his skin, my face a bright red from the sudden touch. I craved it and I knew it was going to be hard in New York. I was always going to want to go back to these moments.
"Good morning," Carters husky voice whispers against my neck as he continues to kiss me. Turning me around so that I'm looking up at him he plants his lips against mine pushing me against the banister. The kiss was passionate, filled with love until it was overflowing. His hands dancing on my back as he held me closer to him. We sat like this for a moment before pulling away. He continued to hold me close to him as he leaned down to plant a kiss on my forehead.
"I really don't want to go," I whispered wrapping my arms around his waist pulling myself into his chest. He was shirtless and at first it had been awkward but over the last few days I'd gotten used to him being around. Waking up next to him, getting food with him everyday, and doing anything we could with our time. It was nice. It'd felt like we were a married couple on our honeymoon. Carter had brought me flowers, gifts, cards. He was doing his best to show me he really did love me and I had to admit it was working. Though the flowers couldn't go with me and the cards were packed nicely in the front of my suitcase unlike everything else of mine, they had been so special to me.
"So don't leave then," Carter whispered back to me as he places his chin on my head looking over the water. "I don't want you to go," I could feel the sadness in his voice and It crushed me, but as much as I wanted to let it affect me right now, I just physically couldn't. My body was exhausted from everything that had happened the last few days and I needed a plane ride just to recover.
"Come on, I have to pack," I mumbled heading back into the bedroom before grabbing a few of my dresses and folding them. Neatly laying them on the bed so Carter could place them into my bag. We continued like this for a little over an hour. I would fold my clothes and Carter would organize them inside my bad to make sure they all fit. We joked and laughed and teased each other about things that could be, but would have to wait until he graduates.
"You know I'm coming to New York right?" Carter muttered as I zip up the overly stuffed bag. My items I had purchased from the surf shops and other cute boutiques was too much for the tiny bag I thought would last me the two weeks we were here.
"What do you mean by that?" I question as I pull the luggage off of the bed making sure I had everything. Rolling it into the hallway Carter followed me before he started talking again.
"It won't be long, you will see me again I promise. There is nor reason for you to be lonely, especially in New York. The city filled with so many people, but I want you to stay away from Andrew," His words cut deep. Who was he to tell me to stay away from Andrew. I planted the luggage next to the door. Random noises came from Clara's room as David and her laughed about something they had been talking about.
"What do you mean?" I said it as if it was a question but it was more of a statement, a fight for attention. Something to get me to the next step of this conversation.
"Stay away from Andrew, he doesn't deserve you and I don't want him thinking he can just swoop back into your life after you left him. You are with me now," He was trying to be cute and I could see it in his eyes. He really meant no harm by his words but for some reason they really seemed to piss me off.
"You can't tell me who I can and can't hang out with Carter, it does not work like that," I turned to walk away from him and I could tell he was panicking. He didn't want to piss me off this close to me leaving. Carter wasn't dumb and he knew what he was doing... especially when he grabbed my hand pulling me close to him as he wrapped his arms around me holding me to his chest.
"I know, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that, I mean you deserve better and I don't want you to fall into a trap of his, he was very emotionally abusive to you and it's not far, no girl deserves to go through something like that especially not you," He pulled away looking down at my face as he held my hands in his. I shook my head wanting to pull away from him but not having the strength to do so.
"This whole situation has been emotionally abusive, don't act like you are better than him, you too proposed to a girl you didn't really love, and I can forgive you for that, but not immediately, things will take time and so will getting over Andrew. I have to pick up my stuff from his house. I moved in with him and that will have to be okay, if you want me to trust you, then you better damn well trust me to be around my ex-fiance," I knew I was still wearing the ring and that must hurt Carter, but I didn't want to lose it. It was a silly reason but I wanted to give it back to Andrew and I couldn't risk losing it in my luggage or leaving it here.
Carter fiddled with it on my finger and nodded his head.
"You promise you will give this back to him as soon as possible?" He whispers looking down at the diamond he had made me take off at our dinner. I shook my head looking up at him and this time I placed my had on his cheek.
"Yes I promise, I don't want the reminder either," I tried my best to smile up at him to help reassure him that I was being serious.
Before Carter could answer Clara and David came rushing out of her bedroom. David held a bra of hers high in the sky as she chased him through the living room. She shouted as she tried to catch up, but he was just too quick for her. Jumping over furniture and weaving around obstacles, Clara just couldn't catch him.
"No, I need a keepsake of the cutie I met on vacation. I need something I can hold when I miss you," David chuckled as he held the bra close to him hiding behind the couch. Carter and I rolled our eyes as they continued to fight over the bra.
"Nope, take a lock of my hair. It's my prized possession and honestly less creepy than you stealing my underwear, at least not my nice bra!" She shouts as she stomps her foot on the ground. David shakes his head quickly, before shoving the bra in the pocket of his jacket he was wearing. Clara glared at him as she dives over the couch. He catches her in one quick swoop throwing her over his shoulders as he walks her back to the bedroom, shooting a quick glance to Carter and I.
"Sorry about that guys," He muttered closing the door behind him.
I looked up at Carter not really sure what to say. He chuckled quickly before looking down at me.
"I told you they were perfect for eachother,"
"I know, you were right, yet again!" I slapped Carter's chest lightly as I walked towards Clara's room. Knocking on the door I wait til the laughing stops before I announce myself.
"Make sure all your clothes are on, I'm coming in..." I waited a few seconds before counting down from three and opening the door. Clara was laying on the bed while David was clear on the other side of the room. They'd very obviously been making out and I had walked in at the worst time for the both of them. "Hurry up, we have to leave soon!" I chuckled grabbing Clara's fully packed bags before walking over to David.
"I'm not asking, I'm demanding..." I paused holding my hand out in front of me. "Give me her bra," Carter watched me in the doorway as David searched mine and his face for the answer to his questions. He wasn't going to get away with stealing my best friends bra. He knew it so he pulled it out of his jacket pocket handing it to me.
"Thank you, you two may now commence, but we are leaving for the airport in fifteen minutes so don't get too crazy!" I closed the door behind me wheeling Clara's bags into the hallway towards the front door. Carter was laughing as he hunched over to take a seat on the couch. His body jolting with the chuckles coming from his lips.
"You are insane!" He gasps as he tries to catch his breath once again. I shake my head. There was no reason for him to think that other than I wasn't letting my girl go home missing one of her favorite bras.
"huh?" I turned and looked at him quickly placing the bra in the suitcase, zipping it up and setting it next to mine.
"You are perfect, you know that right?" Carter smiles at me as he jumps up off the couch coming over to help me grab the bags.
"Here, let me help you take these downstairs to the car, I'll ride with you two to the airport,"
