Twelve
My heart was racing as I rush through the crowds of the busy tourists. I needed my hotel. I needed my room to hide my head under the sheets as if a scary monster was coming to get me. How could I have possibly ran into Carter? What were the odds of something like that? Especially in a state as huge as California. I didn’t even know he was still here and yet there he was. My head shakes as I fumble through the hallway, passing the numbers on the wall until I found the one that labeled my room. My hands shake as I try to pull the key out of my pocket.
The world was spinning so quickly that I felt myself growing a little sick. My stomach rolling as if it was caught on the waves of the ocean. I temple in my own skin in the foyer of out hotel room. Rushing towards my bathroom I collapse to my knees as I let my stomach contents come out. The acid burning my throat as I wipe my mouth. Spitting a few times I grabbed some toilet paper to hide the mess I'd made before flushing the water away.
What was going on here? It wasn't that big of a deal seeing Carter. Why was I so worked up about it? I fall backwards leaning against the wall. My eyes blurry as the tears fill the corners. My body felt more calm as I lay against the cool floor, wincing as the bright light nearly blinds me.
Carter was here first. I needed to just head out and let him be. This was his state he had lived here for years and when he comes to New York he always seems to leave me be, whether I want him to or not. I found myself shaking my head once again as the tears fall slowly down my cheeks. I knew I wasn't going to throw up again and that gave little relief. I tried my best to push myself up off the floor before heading back into the room. I needed a nap or something, my body craving to just relax for a moment. I fall onto the bed before I slowly drift off into darkness.
Meanwhile my friend was still off talking to someone I hadn’t thought of in almost a year.
Clara’s POV
"Hi Carter, uhh I'm so sorry about her," My foot digs at the carpet of the ring shop. My heart was racing in my chest as I look around the building. Erin had ran out and that slightly annoyed me. Why wasn't she able to stand up to her problems? This should have been a happy reunion. I shook my head bringing my attention back to Carter.
"Clara, what are you two doing here?" He fumbles nervously in his pockets as he places something in them. I had no clue what we were really doing in this state. I knew Erin was having problems with Andrew and from the way she was talking earlier it seemed like they were broken up. That was another reason this should have been a happy reunion. I shook my head again, my brown curls falling around my shoulders. Placing the smile back on my face I looked into his beautiful eyes.
"Girl's trip," I squealed looking around the room once again. A younger couple stopped to look at me before shooting Carter a weird glance. I chuckled lightly to myself and if Erin had been here I would have tried to embarrass her slightly but playing further into their questions.
"You convinced Erin to leave the shop for a vacation?" He chuckled to himself before running his hand through his hair. I watched carefully as his body language pulled him further away from me. I wondered why he was acting so strange. Erin and him had been so close. Maybe he was still upset with her for picking Andrew last year over him. I couldn't blame her, Andrew was around, he didn't just show up when he wanted, he was reliable.
"Yeah, we are here for a few weeks actually, it's quite a long trip," Carter nods his head like he was really taking in the words I was speaking. I beamed to myself at this thought. "Yeah, what are you doing tonight, maybe I will try and find Erin and hopefully she has calmed down and we can hang out," I figured it was worth a shot. Fate had put these two back together and I was all for the happy ending. My heart was pounding in my chest as Carter glances back and forth between me and the door.
"I actually have plans tonight, I have reservations at a nice restaurant so I can't really break them," He whispered looking down at his very own shoes.
He was going to dinner?
“That’s okay, where are you guys going? You will have to let us know if it’s worth it,” I was doing the best I could to continue the conversation, all I needed to do was get Erin and Carter somewhere together where neither of them could run away and things would work out. I could feel it in my bones.
“It’s called Lofthouse,” He paused for a moment pulling his phone out of his pocket, he fidgets for a moment before drifting towards the door, “I really have to go, I have to be at dinner in a couple of hours and I really can’t be late, text me if you have any questions about where to go or cool things to do, I’m going to be kind of busy so I’m not sure I can hang out with you guys but you know, keep me updated.” He quickly pulled out a piece of paper before scribbling his number on it and handing it my way. I nodded waving as he rushed out of the ring shop heading towards the parking lot. Jumping in his car he tries his best to back up waiting for all of the pedestrians to get out of his way. I glanced down at the number once again before putting in my pocket. Erin didn’t need to know about this.
I decided I better get back to her. I needed to figure out where she had ran off to. I was willing to bet it was the hotel room.
I wondered for what felt like hours but had really only been a few minutes through the crowds. Our hotel wasn't far from here but the walk felt lonely without my friend. Again I felt a little frustrated that she had ran away so quickly without even a word. What if she had gone to a bar or something, how was I supposed to meet back up with her. Pulling my phone out of my pocket I worked through the motions of calling her...no answer.
I knew she would be safe in whatever she was doing but that didn't subside the fear at all. She was my best friend and I had hoped she hadn't been kidnapped or anything. I watched the faces walking past me carefully before stopping at a drink stand. I needed something to refresh myself in this hot sun. I stood in line for a few minutes watching the sidewalk carefully as people shuffled by, none of them seemed like they had anywhere to be or anything to do. Shaking my head once again I ordered a Dr. Pepper from the drink stand before handing them some money and continuing towards the hotel.
I tried calling her once again but once again there was no answer. My heart started races with more horrible thoughts about what could have happened to her. My pace quickened as I reached the parking lot of the hotel. Once inside the sliding doors I could feel myself speeding up yet again. I opted to take the stairs, my emotion would explode if I didn't find something to distract myself in the elevator. Erin and I were on the 6th floor and the flights seemed to get longer with each corner I turned. Steps after steps that seemed like they would never end.
Finally I reached our floor and as I practically run down the hallway towards our door I fumble with my wallet to get my key card out. I stopped sliding the card quickly praising the door for working the first time. This was rare in my case. Rushing in the hotel room I wandered around for a moment, there was nothing. Everything was quiet. Way too quiet for my liking.
So far this wasn't the most fun girls trip I've ever had. So far this was a mess.
I searched the living room next checking for any sign that she had been there. Nothing was out of place. I began to panic again as I opened the door to her bedroom. My heart only slowing down as I saw her sleeping soundly on her bed.
The panic subsided some more as I entered the room further heading to the bed. Taking a seat next to her I was able to see her breaths flowing smoothly. She must have been so exhausted. I figured it was better to let her rest. Heading back into the living room I decided to turn on the television to pass some time. There wasn't much to do without Erin. I would wait until she woke up before I informed her I had the perfect place for us to go to dinner. She would have no say about it, and I knew it would bring her and Carter closer together. The thoughts of them talking and laughing together was enough to pull me into my very own dreams.
Erin’s POV
My body ached as I finally opened my eyes.
I stretch yawning as I look around the room. Searching for the time, I hadn't realized it'd been hours since I'd gotten back to our hotel. My heart jumps in my chest. I had left Clara all alone on the beach and I hope she was okay. Maybe she would be mad at me. Searching my phone I realized she had called me a few times. My heart sank into my stomach making me want to empty it once again. I shook my head.
Jumping out of bed I took a moment to regain my balance as I into the living room. My body feeling relieved as I saw Clara sleeping soundly on the couch. My stomach growled gently as I walked towards her. Glancing at the TV I laugh as she watched yet another episode of Big Brother, that was her secret obsession.
Placing my hand on her shoulders I shook her gently until she woke up. She shot off the couch with a start flailing the pillows at me as quickly as she could, nearly knocking me over with one accurate blow to the stomach.
"Holy shit!" She shouted as she bends forward her hands on her knees, she was taking deep breaths as she tried to regain her composure. I needed to the the same. Brushing my hair out of my face shooting her a glare.
"What the heck was that," I griped under my breath heading towards the kitchen to see if we had any snacks from the airport left. We didn't.
"You scared me, what do you expect," She moaned as she picked the pillows up tossing them back on the couch before slouching her shoulders. "Oh man, I missed all the good drama," She watches the TV carefully, her mood destroyed by the realization that she had fallen asleep.
"You will be fine," I chuckled looking around the room once again. I hadn't really taken in it's beauty since I was too excited to get to the beach before. Kicking myself for not being more patient. I hadn't expected to see Carter and honestly this trip would have been better if I hadn't. I was already confused enough without adding more to my plate.
"Hey, are you okay though?" Clara questions as she plops down on the couch turning the television off. I nodded my head taking the seat beside her on the couch.
"Yes, I am fine, sorry for running out on you like that, I'm just really confused right now," She rolled her eyes picking at her nails before bringing her attention back to me.
"What the hell do you mean you are really confused right now?" I could feel the tension in her voice. Was she mad at me for running out on her like that? I know I would be if I was here.
"Andrew and I broke up... I think," I stare down at my feet glancing at my toes that were freshly manicured for this trip. My nails painted to match. Clara stares at me for a moment her eyes blinking. I could tell she was trying to process the words I had just said. I was ready for the flood of questions even if I didn't fully understand the situation myself. I watched as she carefully formulated her response, she must have know from some of my earlier comments.
She shook her head before letting out a loud sigh.
"Erin, you are one of the most confusing people I have ever met and though I love you for it, sometimes it can be difficult," She chuckled as she leaned back on the couch.
"I don't even know what to tell you," I chuckled leaning back on the couch as well. It was relaxing to finally have that off my chest. I glance over the ceiling the white paint taking all of the emotion out of the room.
"So now what," She questions turning to look at me as I leave my head planted against the cushions. I shrug my shoulders giving myself a few more seconds to formulate my words.
"I have no clue honestly, I don't know if we are together, or if he was just angry and everything will blow over," I could feel the thoughts rushing through my head as my body begins to tense up once again.
It would take a while for me to come to terms with what had happened to Andrew. There were so many questions about if we were still together or not. Would he wait for me when I get back? Would all my stuff be gone by the time I made it to his house? What would happen after we told everyone we cancelled the wedding? Would his mother dance for joy at the thought of me not being in her life anymore? I could feel everything bubbling back to the surface and I realized I needed to just not think about it. I needed this vacation more than ever. My stomach lets out a loud growl as I continue to stare at the boring ceiling. You would think a place this nice they would have spent more time on the paint. Maybe that's why it was just paint though.
"Geez, looks like you are hungry and guess what I know the perfect place we could head to," Clara smiles as she hops off the couch before pulling me off of it as well. "You are not going to sit here and well in what could have been with Andrew, I mean yeah you are giving up all the money in the world but come on, Carter is so much cuter," I could feel my body jolt under her grip. The sound of his name had stirred me and suddenly I didn't want to move again.
"Why did you have to bring him up? I don't want to see him," I mumbled allowing her to pull me off the couch once again. I knew she wasn't going to let me sit her and mope even if that's what I wanted her to do. I wanted her to just come down to the water with me. We could enjoy it as it rushes over our toes and watch the moon as it kisses the night sky. It would be perfect, no boys needed, nothing to think about other than the sounds of the world around us.
"The Lofthouse is waiting for us," Clara smiled as she looked down at her phone pulling up the directions to the eatery. "So hurry up because it's going to be packed and we need to get there before we starve to death," Clara chuckled as she hopped towards the door. She was always on the move. I groaned following her towards the door. I was never going to win this fight, if she had picked somewhere to eat then I guess that is where we were going and there was no sense in fighting her on that.
The door locked behind us as Clara and I rushed into the hallway. She dragged me down the hallway as If we were going to be late. I fumbled along behind her as she continued towards the elevator.
"I'm not taking those stairs again," She shook her head glaring at the door the held the entrance to the stairway. I chuckled for a moment slightly confused at what she was talking about.
"Why?" I questioned before I realized we were going down. The elevator traveling slowly between the floors. She shook her head.
"Long story," I decided that was all I needed to know. Honestly there was nothing about stairs that was all that interesting so I figured my thoughts were better spent somewhere else. Somewhere like the restaurant Clara was so determined to go to.
"Hey Clara," I paused for a moment as she turned to look at me, hope in her eyes for a question that would excite her. I knew it wouldn't. "What made you pick the restaurant we are going to?" She was fiddling with her hands as she inspected every part of the question.
"I heart Kim Kardashian was going to be there, so I figured we just had to go," She shook her head hopping out of the elevator once the doors opened. I stumbled after her even more confused.
"You hate Kim Kardashian,"
