Tempest
"Come on my little storm!" mother had her hands outstretched towards me, and I waddled over the best I could. Her big brown eyes were warm, and her touch was soft. We both cuddled on the couch, and eventually I began to dose off to the sound of the crackling fire, and the pleasant looking paintings that lined the wooden log walls of our home.
"Time to go!" Grandmother called from outside the window. I looked up at my mother in question. I don't remember us planning a family trip.
"Time to go, my little whirlwind." My mother looked down with sad eyes.
"Where are we going mommy?" I asked her with my multicolored ones. Her eyes welled up with tears, but she brushed them away and took me in her arms. I nuzzled my little head into the crook of her arm, and we walked out of the large oak door into the crisp morning air.
Our century old suburban was parked in our dirt road driveway, and the trunk was loaded with suitcases and boxes. I looked around at my surroundings and noticed something,
"Mommy, where's daddy?" I questioned. I thought she looked down at me with a new kind of sadness and hurt, but I must have imagined it because it disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.
"He'll be there when we arrive at our new home. We're going to the city, sweetheart. We're gonna have a new beginning." She sounded like she was trying to convince herself.
We piled into the back and my mother started driving. I don't know when, and I don't know how, but eventually we traveled to an inn.
"come on now Tempest, let's go and sleep." I was half asleep by the time we got there, and the sun was already setting below the horizon, making the large oak in front of the motel look like nothing more than a shadow. I slumped into my mother's arms as she carried me up the stairs, my head nuzzled in the crook of her arm. The sun warmed my face although there was almost none left to spare.
"Here, give her to me so you may open the door." My grandmother commanded my mother as she struggled with the key. They struggled with the change in formation, and after a couple of tries, we waltz into the room. There were two twin beds and a dresser, and that was it. My mother laid me down on one of them, and I fell fast asleep.
"Good night my little Storm."
I woke with a start, practically lurching forward in my restraints.
Wait a minute, I thought frantically. My arms were tied to their full width, and my legs were stretched downward. Itried to move my head to look at my suroundings, but as soon as I moved my head, I felt a sharp pain shoot through my shoulder blade. I flinched and it took all of my willpower not to cry out. If I was where I thought I was, then showing weakness wasn't an option. I attempted to look at my shoulder and gasped. There was a bandage on it, which I found strange. But what shocked me most was the amount of blood that was on the bandage. I could still feel the bullet inside of my body, which meant that wither they were too lazy to dig it out, (which I highly doubted), or it was near an important artery.
"Careful, its still not healed yet." I was jerked out of my sickened trance by afemale voice that came from the opposite side of the room. I looked toward the voice and was taken aback.
"Yvette? Why aren't you tied up?" I asked her. She was embroidered with jewels and her movements where calculated and planned. She was also planked by at least a dozen guards, who were more heavily armed than Jax. Yvette looked at me with amusement and simply replied,
"I think you know why Tempest." I felt my eyebrows come together in confusion, because I still had no clue as to what she was talking about. Then it hit me.
"You inserted yourself into the log books. That's why your healing stats were so damn high." I felt my anger boiling beneath my skin. I felt my eyes turn from a confused grey to a violent shade of brown, so much so I bet they almost looked black.
"You were the one who contacted the guards outside the convenience store. You were here to get us arrested the whole time, weren't you!" I lurched forward in my chains but was overcome by the pain in my shoulder. I felt my energy become drained, and I slumped forward, unable to do much else. Sweat dripped down my forehead as the pain began to increase, I'm guessing because of the strain that I applied to it when I was ranting.
Yvette smiled sadly, as if she was taking pity on me. That just made my blood boil even more.
"Yes, it was me. I've been plotting this for months, ever since you 'took me in'. Here's the thing; I wasn't homeless and hurt. i was exactly the opposite. And that story that I told you was made up so that you would let me infiltrate your little hidey hold of misfits. And the best part is, the story was thought up by my own mom. The most genius woman in the world, if I do say so myself."
I suddenly felt freezing, as if the air surrounding me had dropped 10 degrees. I felt my face go pale, and I suddenly understood what was going on.
"Diana Moon Glampers is your mom?!" I screamed in horror. There was no way, no how. But if this were true, then the Unfamiliars were in serious trouble.
Yvette just gave me a sly smile, and pulled out what seemed to be a remote control. I narrowed my eyes and tried to read what the label said that was attached to it.
"now, Tempest. Before I press this button, let me have you know that even though you were a loyal and trustworthy friend, the punishment for your hiding does not hinder. In fact, thanks to you, the entire underground will be put to death." She said this with glee, and as I opened my mouth to respond, she pressed the button.
"Say hello to your fearless weapons instructor!" She said with delight. I looked up at the ceiling and to my horror found Chris being brought down on a metal pole. His hands were tied behind his back, and he was bruised and bleeding almost everywhere. His head was slumped over and he didn't appear to be moving... except for his index finger. It was tapping against the pole rapidly, and I was so distracted by it that I didn't notice that Yvette was still talking.
Her monologue was so annoying and just so pointless to the point of making me deaf, I stopped listening altogether and turned my attention back to Chris, who still wasn't moving, but his finger was still very much alive with activity. All of a sudden, I understood what he was trying to do
Morse Code. I immediately thought back to all our past lessons and something struck me. Back when I was ten, Alyssa made us all translate a one-hundred-page book from Morse code to English then back again. I'll have to thank her later if I ever get out of this mess. I looked at his excessive tapping and realized he must be tapping the same message over and over again, and was probably not gonna stop unless I gave him the okay.
.... . .-.. .--. / -.-. --- -- .. -. --. .-.-.- .-.-.- .-.-.- / -.- . . .--. / .... . .-. / --- -.-. -.-. ..- .--. .. . -..
It took me a minute to figure out, but I was able to translate it into;
"Help Coming... Keep her occupied."
I nearly started crying out of joy, and was just able to contain myself. I gathered my wits and was about to interrupt her speech, when the door exploded.
"Go, go, go!" Jax's voice cut through Yvette's droning and all hell broke loose. I opened my eyes and I smiled larger than I had in days. I saw Catom come in swinging with his scythe, and Olivia with her glock. Jessica just showed up with a normal hammer, but she was wreaking havoc. Even the little kids came and started to fight. Little Mattie was given a tiny dagger, and thanks to Alyssa, who was swinging her cane like a madman, he was one of the most dangerous warriors we had. Shyla, who was 8, was given a tiny handgun, and she was shooting and obviously had no mercy. Yvette fell on the ground due to surprise, but it wasn't long before she got back on her feet. She turned to me with a wickedly evil smile and drew a small handgun. She pointed it at me point blank, and said one thing.
"Good bye Storm."
My eyes widened and I suddenly felt the world spin. The bullet would leave the gun, and my life would ultimately end. Everything that I've done, every hope and dream that I hoped to achieve would go flying out the window. I suddenly saw myself as a little five-year-old, smiling and happy at the handle bars of a tricycle, my mother guiding me down the hilly slope. In a flash, I was seven, standing over her dead body and staring in horror at the Gamekeepers. Then I was ten, and I finally met the gorgeous jack. So kind and considerate. If only I had the chance to tell him. Then fourteen, my first kiss with Justin, who was later shot because of a failed mission. Then we come back to the present, which is now my future.
But the boom didn't come. The killing blow was delayed.
How cruel... I thought.
Then I heard a grunt and I opened my eyes to find jack standing over the broken form of Yvette, his green eyes glowing with hate. His eyes immediately turned to me, and I was able to get the words to slip past my lips.
"Jack..." I whispered. He ran over to me and immediately started scanning me to make sure I was alright. I was smiling and I couldn't make sense of how he managed to escape, but to be honest, I wasn't complaining.
"Tempy..." he took out his Swiss army knife and set to work on the metal bands that held me in the air. He took out one screw, then another, then another...
"ugh..." my non-injured arm fell forward, but he still had about 40 screws left to go to set me free.
"Jesus, they almost had you as tied up as me..." he said. I was surprised that we weren't shot, and I looked around and I realized why. The floor was scattered with the broken and bloodied bodies of the gamekeepers. Jax was tending the wounded, but she looked worried.
"Jack, we have to get moving. Yvette had infiltrated the Underground," she looked at all of us and said with despair in her voice, "We have no home."
Catom's hand started shaking, and he turned his head away from sight. Jessica broke down into tears and Olivia was as white as a sheet, which quickly became a popular reaction.
Alyssa ran over to Chris, who was still tied to the pole, and started working on his restraints. She was hysterical, and you couldn't tell that by just looking at her. On the outside, she was calm and collected. But by the way her eyebrows were drawn in and her eyes seemed to be tearing up, that's how you could tell.
I fell to the ground in a heap, and it wasn't long before little Johnny was at my side along with Jack.
"We don't have time for this." Alyssa said while she helped Chris onto her shoulder. "We have to leave now. Me and Chris thought that something like this might happen. We have to go."
I struggled to get to my feet, but Jack saw my shoulder and his eyes immediately narrowed.
"im fine." I grunted. He just slung my good arm over his shoulder and we all ran out of my cell.
The alarms blared in my ear, and I resisted the urge to cover them. Half of us went with Alyssa and Chris, who was alright enough to walk again, and the other half with Jax, jack and me.
We ran through the facility and I kind of regretted killing Yvette, she might've been able to help us find a way out of this maze.
"Right!" Catom yelled. We took a right and we were met with the blaring sunlight that instantly blinded me. I didn't have time to recover though. We soon heard large footsteps come barreling down the corridor.
"Go!" Jax screamed as she started running with her 45 millimeter Koch in hand. Jack decided to just pick me up bridal style and started sprinting. He grabbed Johnny by the hand and dragged him along as I heard the pops of gunfire erupt behind me. Catom was dragging along Shyla, who was shooting her little gun behind her. I looked around and spotted something behind the gamekeepers.
"Jack, give me your gun!" I screamed as we hid behind a corner. Everyone else had taken cover as well, but it wasn't going to last
He looked at me like I was nuts, but he didn't argue. He set me down and I took his gun from his belt. I looked around and I spotted the radio tower behind the gamekeepers.
This will probably get me killed. I turned to Jack and Johnny.
"Thanks Jack." I said. I pulled him in and kissed him hard on the lips. He breathed in deeply and put his hands in my hair, gently pulling me in closer. I pushed away and took one last look at his features, memorizing them.
His blond hair, his green eyes and chiseled face. I smiled sadly and said one last thing.
"See you later Alligator."
Jacks eyes became alert again and he was about to say something, but I ran out into the gunfire and started firing round after round at the Gamekeepers, taking down one with every shot. I heard Jax yelling out at me, but I hardly heard her. I was a monster, destroying the enemy with everything that I had. I had taken down ten of them and was so close to the tower. I aimed at a Gamekeeper and fired, but there was nothing left to fire. Cursing, I watched as the bullet leave the barrel and immediately moved my body.
It grazed my arm and I winced. I drew my dagger and ran faster than I thought I ever could.
I sliced his neck and watched as his friends sprinted towards me. I was at the radio tower, and I sprinted up the stairs faster than should've been possible.
When I reached the top I smiled to see a lever labeled;
"EMERGENCY SHUT OFF"
I flipped the switch and watched as the worlds lights slowly shut off Immediately. The world was surrounded in darkness. I knew that even though I shut off the worlds power, I also shut off the Handicaps.
The guards stopped in their tracks, and immediately fell over.
Electrocution. I thought to myself. Then I heard a boom. I felt a sudden burning pain in my back, and I turned to find Diana Moon standing over me as I collapsed in agony.
"Did you really think that you could get rid of what I have built my life on?" her eyes smoldered and they were puffy. She aimed the gun at my head and I looked up and smiled at her.
"As long as there are people here to defend our freedom, you will never win." I drew my knife and stood up, ignoring the pain in my stomach and my shoulder. She smiled and probably thought that she had won. Probably because I had brought a knife to a gun fight. She pulled the trigger and by some miracle was able to deflect it off of my blade. I lunged at her and drove the knife in between her shoulder blades.
Her grey eyes shone with surprise and she started to sputter.
"H-how?" she said, blood starting to dribble out of her mouth.
"Because I am not your toy." I snarled before I shoved her off of the tower and onto the ground below.
The adrenaline was wearing down and I was starting to feel the full effect of my wounds.
"TEMPEST!" I heard Jacks voice as he ran up the stairs. I fell to the ground and was beginning to loose consciousness, making it hard to see.
"jack..." I said as my vision began to blur, making it impossible to see if it was actually him or not.
Then I slipped into darkness.
