Chapter 6: The Attack and the Cost

AN: I've decided that I'm going to dedicate chapters to the people who post the best comments. So this chapter is dedicated to Puppydude for his awesome comment, "You lie you say that its not very exciting I picked this over Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix like it was a no brainer." Thanks Puppydude! Now, on with the story!

Chapter 6: The Attack and the Cost - Luke's POV

I had a chat with Beckendorf on the way back to the Chaos Cabin.

'Hey, Blaster,' I smirked, 'nice moves in there.'

He threw his head back and laughed, 'I only wish Percy had come in a little later. I was having so much fun taunting those Ares kids.'

Silena caught up with us and wrapped her thin arms around Beckendorf's larger one, 'I left there thinking they were going to kill you. I never thought that you'd do something like that,' she giggled, 'Impressive.'

He smiled happily and lent down to kiss her. I pretended to gag and Silena punched me in the shoulder. Ever since Percy brought them both back from the dead, they'd started dating again. Silena had long since forgiven me for using her as a spy and getting her boyfriend killed.

Percy glanced back and saw Silena and Beckendorf. I couldn't see his face but I could tell he was smiling underneath his hood. I jogged to catch up with him, leaving Silena and Beckendorf talking in hushed voices.

'So,' I said once I'd caught up.

'So,' he repeated. I could hear the wariness in his voice. Heck, we were pretty much brothers. He knew where I was going with this.

'That was Xavier, huh?' I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye.

I heard him sigh. Yep, he definitely knew where this was going. 'Yeah, that was him.'

I had a bright idea, 'Can I go and beat him up?'

He stopped and looked at me, utterly bewildered. What can I say, I am bewildering. (AN: Is that a word; bewildering? Oh, meh)

'Why?' he said, shocked.

I rolled my eyes, 'Well, 'cause he was the one who messed up my brothers life and made him miserable, duh!

He chuckled. It was good to hear him do that. He hadn't been very cheery since we got here.

'Maybe,' he sounded weary and tired. I wondered how much sleep he'd got lately. 'I think it was enough to see Beckendorf taunt him like that.'

Percy turned to me, 'Have you decided if you're going to reveal your identity yet? The gods said that they'd forgiven you.'

I shook my head, 'It's not the gods that worry me, it's the campers.'

'I know heaps of them forgave you when you sacrificed yourself to defeat Kronos. I was around to see it.'

I grimaced, 'Maybe. I-I gotta think about it.'

He nodded in understanding. Then he slung his arm around my shoulders, 'Come on, brother. Lets go see the others.'

I laughed and slung my arm around his shoulders too. We were on our way back to the Chaos Cabin when we heard the first scream.

Percy's POV

Luke and I swung around, our weapons already out. Current twitched in my hand, eager for battle. Silena and Beckendorf ran up to us.

'What's going on?' Silena said breathlessly.

Then we heard the scream again. Followed by another, and another.

'It coming from over there,' Luke pointed over towards the strawberry fields.

I strained my ears and could hear the distant sounds of clanging, metal crashing on metal. A fight had started. I looked at my warriors. Silena had her knife out and Beckendorf was grasping his sword tightly, his knuckles turning white on the hilt.

'Come on,' I shouted, 'We have to help the campers.'

Without another word, we ran towards the havoc.

Over the ridge of the hill, a battle was raging. The warriors of Chaos and the campers were easily distinguishable in amongst the hoards of monsters. And leading the charge was a monster I'd really had enough of for two lifetimes.

It was like he grew bigger each time I saw him. His horns looked like they should've weighed him down, but he walked and fought fine, unfortunately. His hairy upper body was already coated with blood from the campers he'd taken care of. He was dressed in Greek battle armour and held a double-bladed axe in one hand and a long, thick sword in the other.

The Minotaur roared, a sound that was probably heard on the other side of the world.

I looked at my friends and then back at the battlefield, my eyes scanning the fight, trying to work out where all of us should go. I turned back and flipped straight into commando mode.

'Right. Pegasus, head over there to where some Athena and Aphrodite kids are holding out against the hellhounds. Blaster, over there where the Ares kids are taking on the dracaenae. Iroas, you're with me against old meathead.'

They all nodded and rushed off to where I'd directed them all. Luke followed me down the hill to face the Minotaur.

'Hey Beefbrain!' I yelled at him. He whipped his head around-which could not be good for him with those horns-and stalked over to me. He got a about 10 feet away from me and stopped. He roared again, his breath smelled like rotten meat and it parted my hair. I grabbed my hood to stop it from blowing back. Luke did the same.

I looked at him and understanding passed between us. Together we charged the monster, me darting to the left and him to the right.

With our new Chaos powers, we made quick work of the Mintoaur. Within seconds Luke and I both held a horn in our hands. We both tucked them away in our cloaks and ran to join the rest of the battle.

It was mayhem. I slashed, hacked, kicked and rolled. My warriors and I teleported behind the enemy lines and invaded from behind. Some of us-along with Annabeth who had her invisibility cap-melted into the darkness and attacked the unsuspecting monsters.

In the end, it was one of the quickest battles I'd ever fought. We were down to the last handful of monsters when I felt a chill up my spine, like the saying about someone walking on your grave. I twisted and saw Annabeth jump in front of me as she began to battle dagger on sword against one of the last empousa. I realized that, with my back turned, if Annabeth hadn't jumped in, I'd be dead. Even though I was immortal, I wasn't a god; I could be killed. My guess was that the same went for Annabeth and the rest of the demigods.

I stood, frozen to the spot while she fought the creature. She jumped in to save me. But she didn't know who I was, so why would she do that?

I jumped as I heard a clang as Annabeth's knife clashed against the empousa's sword. I hurried to help.

'Thank-Thank you,' I stuttered as I raised Current to defend against a blow.

She gave me a grim smile and opened her mouth to reply. The empousa took advantage of the second she was distracted and slashed her sword against Annabeth's chest.

My mind went blank and she seemed to fall in slow motion. Anger and fear washed my vision with red.

'NO!' I screamed. I ran at the monster, my body glowing with the power of Chaos. I closed my eyes and focused all my energy. I flung my arms outwards, my body shone as bright as the sun and I felt my feet leave the ground as I was lifted into the air. My veins pulsed with power and I let it all go in one mega-destructo blast.

I opened my eyes only when I felt solid ground beneath my feet again. My eyes scanned the battlefield and I found no monsters anywhere. I had destroyed them all.

I felt dizzy. There was no way I could release that much energy and stay on my feet for much longer. Then I remembered the reason why I'd gone all supernova and I ran back to Annabeth.

Luke knelt next to her, trying to force feed her ambrosia. He looked up at me as I approached, his face grim. He shook his head. I examined Annabeth. Her face was pale and she was bleeding rapidly from a deep gash that stretched horizontally across her stomach. Her chest was barely moving.

Staring at her white face, clammy with sweat, I knew what I had to do. I also knew that it would drain me off all energy and could possibly end up killing me in the exhausted state I was in. But gazing down at the wounded girl who was once my girlfriend, I knew I couldn't let her die. She may have cheated on me and broken my heart, but deep down, I still loved her.

I put my left hand on the cut and raised my head. I met Luke's eyes and his face went slack.

'No,' his voice quivered and he shook his head, 'Don't do it, Percy. You don't have enough left. Please, don't do it!'

But I closed my eyes and focused all the power had left.

Chaos was the creator of everything. He could mould new creatures and beings, he could raise buildings and fix broken objects.

And, he could heal.

Directing all my energy into Annabeth, I concentrated on her injury and imagined it closing. Healing is a process that usually takes time and care, and if was the fates decree that someone would die, healing them would take enormous energy and power, both of which were depleted in me.

I felt all my strength leave me and fought to stay conscious. I pressed my right hand to Annabeth's chest as well and closed my eyes as I felt my body begin to convulse. I shook like mad, my life slipping away with the effort it took to heal Annabeth.

Then, I heard a gasp for breath. Opening my eyes, I saw Annabeth lying on the ground, now awake. Her hands pulled at the grass and her grey eyes were wide with fear. She sat up jerkily and rubbed her hand across her stomach, feeling for the cut that was no longer there.

She looked up at me and began to smile, but it faded when I fell back. My body no longer shook, but I had used all my energy. I had no strength left in me. My eyes began to close.

'No, no, no, no,' Luke rushed to my side, mumbling, 'Stay with me, Percy. Stay with me.'

The last view I had before everything went out, was my brother staring down at me, his eyes wide and fearful beneath his hood.
