Chapter 24: The Battle Begins - Chiron's POV

Everywhere I looked was chaos.

And I don't mean Chaos chaos, I mean everything-is-completely-crazy chaos.

In the dim light of the raging flames, every growl and ever scream sounded sinister. The atmosphere felt forbidding and gruesome.

Fallen campers lay scattered everywhere. As battlefield medic, I did my best.

I galloped over to a young girl lying face down on the ground and hoisted her onto my back. She didn't look any older than ten. In the firelight, her pale face was coated with red, and her blonde hair streaked with blood.

'Hang on,' I told her. 'Everything will be okay.'

I cantered to the amphitheatre where a small band of about six or seven Apollo kids were already tending to the injured. I lay the girl down on a stretcher and took a look.

I grimaced when I took in the ghastly appearance of her leg; a knife was embedded hilt deep in her thigh. From the looks of it, the knife could've been poisoned, but it was also razor sharp.

'Don't worry,' I said soothingly. 'You will be okay.'

She nodded her small tear streaked face, closed her eyes and lay back.

With a pang of sorrow in my heart, I headed outside to retrieve more of the wounded.

Clanging metal, roaring monsters, and cries from the marred all spun through my head. This wasn't the first war I'd taken part in, but it would definitely be the worst.

My eyes scanned the battlefield and I saw young Commander Epsilon standing over two boys, both of whom were wounded. As I watched, he defended them and prevented them from becoming the dinner of a couple of laistrygorian giants.

I made my way over as fast as my hooves would take me. Even before I reached them, Epsilon had disposed of the giants and was waiting for me to take the boys to the Apollo cabin.

'This can't work forever,' he warned as he helped heave the two boys onto my back. 'It was a brave plan; the best plan. But we need something more.'

'I know,' I said. 'But what else can we do?'

Beneath his helmet, I could see his eyes for the first time. They were the brightest sea green I'd ever seen, filled with determination, strength and sacrifice.

'I may be able to call reinforcements,' he said slowly. 'An old friend. But it may take time.'

'Take the time,' I called as I turned. 'We need all the help we can get.'

He nodded and sprinted off to join the battle. Securing the two boys, I returned to the amphitheatre where the Apollo cabin informed me of new developments.

Nineteen injured campers were in stable conditions, three more were in critical states. I felt hollow when I learned that one of the three was the ten year old girl.

It was only the first hour, and we were already down twenty two people. Epsilon was right; we need something more.

But what?

Annabeth's POV

I fought viciously alongside some of my family.

My brothers Malcolm and Sam as well as my sister, Jamie. Together, the four of us faced of against six empousai.

'Six against four,' Jamie muttered. 'That's hardly fair.'

I chuckled, 'But we're the children of Athena. We still have the upper hand.'

The six empousai lunged in sync; two went for me, two at Malcolm, and one each at Sam and Jamie.

I grinned. I was experienced. I could fight off two at once. I wasn't sure how Malcolm would do, but I would have to worry about that later.

I ducked under the first empousa's strike, and caught the other's blade on the hilt of my dagger.

Drawing back, I did a half flip over their heads I landed behind them in a kneeling position. I slashed at one's legs as the other turned and stabbed at me.

I winced as her sword grazed my shoulder where my armour didn't cover.

Gritting my teeth, I grabbed the back of her head, and slammed it into the hilt of her own sword. The empousa past out cold.

Unfortunately, its sister wasn't finished with me.

She advanced slowly, limping on her miss matched feet, hair sparking and crackling like a whip.

She lunged and jabbed at my side, but I swerved out of the way.

Caught with a sudden idea, I smirked and grabbed her wrist. Throwing all my weight down, I judo flipped her over my shoulder where she landed next to her sisters.

Wasting no time, I spun around and stabbed my dagger hard. The empousa went limp. I did the same to the one I'd knocked out and watched as the disintegrated to ash, making it so much easier for the clean up crew.

Racing back to my siblings, I saw Jamie and Sam facing off against their empousai. They weren't strong fighters, but they were doing well.

It was Malcolm I was worried about.

He had bested one of his opponents, but evidently not before I landed a good blow on his leg. He limped around, trying to get in a good angle to fight off the last empousa.

She lunged first. Malcolm caught her strike on his blade and pushed her back, wobbling on his bad leg. Strain was clearly visible in his face.

I switched paths, heading towards Malcolm instead of Jamie and Sam.

'Malcolm!' I yelled. Be careful!'

I should've known better than to call out.

Malcolm whipped his head around, and in that moment, I could see everything he felt; pride, fear, love, pain.

And courage.

In the split second Malcolm was distracted, the empousa hissed in triumph. She whirled forward and stabbed so brutally, her sword cut right through his bronze breastplate, her sword tip protruding out his back

I think I screamed. It was hard to tell with the blood pounding in my ears.

Malcolm doubled over, coughing blood. With shaking hands, he pulled the swords from his chest, and he straightened with obvious effort.

I could only watch in awful horror as Malcolm continued to attack with one hand, the other covering the gash on his chest.

With a roar of anger, he sliced his sword straight through the empousa and she vaporized.

Once she was gone, Malcolm dropped to the ground like a sack of flour. I was barely aware of anything except me, my brother and the horrendous wound. The sounds of the battle seemed dim and far away.

I ran to him as fast as I could and pulled his head onto my lap.

My fingers fumbled on his armour straps as I tried to pull his breastplate off. I heard shouts of, 'NO!' from behind me, and knew that Jamie and Sam had noticed Malcolm.

I paid no attention. I heard them approach and drop down beside Malcolm. Jamie gripped his hand and murmured encouragement, tears slipping silently down her cheeks. Sam just shook his head, too stunned to speak or cry.

I finally got the breastplate off and examined the wound. My heart sank. The blade had pierced a vital organ, I couldn't tell which.

'Annabeth,' Malcolm whispered. 'Jamie, Sam.'

I shook my head, 'You're not aloud to speak. As head councillor, I forbid you to speak.'

He cracked a smile and my heart broke even more as blood spilled from his mouth. I took his hand.

'You need to get back to the battle,' he managed, 'all of you. I'm going to die, there's no stopping it.'

'I said no speaking,' I scolded, my voice breaking. 'You're not going to die; I forbid that too.'

He locked eyes with each one of us in turn, ending with me.

'You have to win,' he whispered, squeezing my hand. 'That's my last request; win it for me.'

I nodded as tears cascaded down my cheeks in a waterfall. No noise escaped my lips, I was too hollow to  make a sound.

'I promise.'

He took a shuddering breath-probably the last he would ever take.

'Good,' he muttered. 'Good, good.'

Then his grip on my hand slackened and his turned glazed. I bent over his body and cried.

My brother was dead.

Jamie screamed at the sky, 'NO! Curse you! Why would you take him?! What will you gain?!'

Sam stood silently and wiped the tears from his eyes. He was always a quiet one, but I'd never seen him at such a loss for words.

At last, I took a deep breath and set Malcolm's head down gently. As I picked up my sword and stood, I could feel my eyes heat up with anger. They will not take my brother without consequence.

'Come on,' I growled to Jamie and Sam. 'We promised him we'd win this war, so that's what we're going to do.'

Travis' POV

I tried not to feel anything as I watched demigods fall.

At one point, I could see Chiron racing across the battlefield, two boys spread across his back. It was a terrible sight and downright depressing.

I finished off a giant and hurriedly glanced around the battlefield, trying to figure out where I was most needed.

I decided to head for a monster being fought off by a boy about my age, not to far from the amphitheatre and the wounded.

I groaned as I approached, recognizing the creature from Monster Class with the Chaos warriors. It was a Chimera; the head and front of a lion, the back end of a goat and tail of a serpent. Just great.

The boy didn't turn as I came close. He couldn't, or he'd get his head bitten off.

He stuck out at the monsters side with his sword, but the Chimera snapped its head around and almost took a chunk out of his arm. He tried to reach around the back, but the snake tail lashed out.

'Careful,' I warned. 'The snake's poisonous.'

'Thanks for the heads up. Snake, poison; never would've made that connection.'

I almost gasped aloud. Not because of the sarcasm, but because I recognized the voice that used it. He may have been wearing a helmet, but I would know him anywhere.

Connor jumped aside as the monster whipped around, striking out with its serpent tail. I dropped under its guard and tried to use its size against it, but the thing was impossibly fast for its size.

'I've tried that,' Connor said regretfully. 'It wont work.'

'There has to be something,' I grunted. 'We have to kill it. We're all that stands between it and the hospital!'

Connor nodded grimly and tried to feint to the left, before rolling to the right. But this thing was unfortunately intelligent. It anticipated the move and bit at him. Thankfully, he moved away just in time. I tried the same, and achieved the same result.

We went on the defence as the Chimera began to press us back, towards the amphitheatre.

All I knew was that we couldn't let it get in there. It would tear the place apart, potentially killing all the wounded.

I grasped Shadow tighter in my right hand as we fought back against the beast. It was too close to the hospital now; any closer and it would be over.

'We have to hold out,' I managed through gritted teeth.

'I know,' Connor groaned. 'We can't let it get through!'

He suddenly pressed forward with renewed ferocity. I grinned and followed his example. The Chimera reared back, and it seemed like we had it on the run. Until-

'Look out!' I cried.

Too late, I realized it wasn't retreating, it was preparing to pounce. The thing lunged at Connor and latched its jaw around his outstretched arm. He screamed in agony as the Cimera's teeth tore through his skin.

'Connor!' I screamed.

I didn't care if he wondered how I knew his name. All I cared was that my little brother was about to be torn appart by a monsterous beast.

'RAGH!'

I swung my sword wildly, driven on by pure blind rage. The only thing that matter to me was destroying that monster.

It didn't take long to reduce the Chimera to a pile of ashes. I couldn't even tell you how I did it. I only knew that it had hurt Connor while trying to get to the people in the hospital to hurt them.

I ran back to Connor and pulled his good arm around my shoulder, hoisting him up. I walked him into the amphitheatre where we were greeted by two Apollo kids who began to inpsect Connor's arm.

I helped walk my brother over to a bed where he lay down, semi-conscious. He focused on me with some difficulty.

'You knew my name,' he muttered. 'How is it you knew my name?'

I smiled sadly and knew it was time.

'How could I forget my own brothers name?' I asked as I reached up and removed my helmet.

His face broke into a huge smile, 'Travis! You're alive!'

He tried his best to sit up to give me a big bear hug, but I gently pushed him back down as pain flared across his face.

'Yes, I am,' I agreed. 'But you won't be if you don't stay still.'

My head jerked up as an enormous roar rung throughout the valley. I looked back at Connor.

'Stay here,' I said. 'The Apollo campers can fix your arm, but you've lost too much blood.'

He shook his head weakly, 'I wanna help.'

'No. You can barely stand, let alone fight off an army. You're better off here. Once you can stand, help with the wounded, because there sure as hell will be a lot more.'

Connor didn't like it, but he eventually agreed, and I rushed outside to rejoin the fight, replacing my helmet as I ran.

I stumbled to a stop at the entrance to the amphitheatre and watched in terror as a small army charged straight through the wall of dimming flames and right into battle.

Great, I thought, reinforcements.

But a loud yell made me reconsider the thought.

'Fight!' the voice shouted. 'Protect the camp!'

I smiled and sighed in relief. They were indeed reinforcements, but not for the enemy.

For us.

I marched right back into the attack as Tyson the Cyclops, Percy's brother, led his brethren into war against Destruction's army.

Happy, happy, happy. Three different point of views, three different fights. There will be plenty more in the chapters to come.

I hope you enjoyed all the little surprises in this chapterm and in the chapters to come. So much planned ...

My cover comeptition is still running. I'm not sure when I'll end it, I just wanna give everyone a chance to enter. I'll probably choose a winner on the weekend. I'd love for everyone to get involved.

Anyway, thanks for reading and if you could do me a favour and vote, comment and follow.
Thanks a bunch guys! :)
