Chapter 13: More Problems - Frank's POV

The next time they came, it wasn't just for Epsilon.

He was much better the next day. Epsilon was already up when the rest of us woke. He shook Piper and me awake, then crawled over to wake Annabeth.

While Epsilon was handing out the food the shadows brought, I pulled her aside.

'I thought you said you were going to take watch,' I said, 'Why was it Epsilon who woke us? It shouldn't have been him after whatever happened yesterday.'

'It wasn't my fault,' she insisted, 'He woke up and we talked. Then he put his hand on my forehead and put me to sleep. Looks like Destruction couldn't take all his powers.'

I felt hope flare within me. If we could use that one power to our advantage ...

'Hey guys,' Piper called, 'you're missing out on breakfast.'

We laughed at the joke. This was not breakfast; it was breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I took my small share of bread and wolfed it down hungrily.

All through the day, Epsilon seemed determined to show everyone that he was stable and completely capable of doing things, despite our efforts to get him to sit down and rest.

He pulled himself together enough to tell us what happened when the shadows took him yesterday. When he was done, everyone was looking at him in horror. Even Annabeth who'd heard it before.

'Oh my gods,' Angel stuttered after a long silence.

Epsilon just nodded.

'Why didn't you tell us?' Flames said, 'We could've helped.'

'No,' Epsilon stood, leaving us on the floor, 'I didn't want to tell you because I don't want Destruction using it against you all. You can't let him know you know.'

'Why not?' Angel demanded sternly, 'We want to help, Epsilon. We don't care.'

'You should care!' Epsilon grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her, 'Thats the point. I don't want you to care. I don't want any of you getting hurt because of me. I wanted to die, Angel. That's how bad the pain was. It made me feel like I just wanted to end it all.'

Piper and Annabeth jumped up and pulled him away from Angel who was shaking. Epsilon leaned against a wall and slid to the ground, crying.

'I don't want any of you to die because of me,' he whispered.

Annabeth knelt next to him and put her hand on his shoulder. They seemed to be a lot closer since last night; Epsilon would no longer tense when she was around and she was a lot calmer around him.

'We're not going to die,' she said softly, 'We have to have faith in ourselves and each other. Otherwise, this war will be lost before its even begun. Faith is so important and if we don't have it, all is already gone. If we don't have faith, what are we fighting for?'

Epsilon barely registered her words. I was about to jump in and say something, when the door swung open again, revealing the shadows standing there.

Annabeth and Angel each grasped Epsilon's arms, as if that would keep the shadows from taking him. Epsilon was shivering with fright. Piper was frozen to the spot, too scared to move.

I jumped up and moved in front of the shadows, blocking Epsilon from their view.

'You wan't him? Well, you have to go through us first!' I yelled.

'Frank, no!' Epsilon tried to pull me back, but I stood my ground.

Then, one of the shadows spoke. Its voice was quiet and soft, but dripping with malice.

'So be it,' it whispered.

Then it grabbed me by the arms and hauled me forwards. I tried fighting against it, but it was as solid as rock, even though it was made of smoke.

'Frank!' Piper screamed.

I looked back and saw the rest of the shadows moving into the cell, grabbing the others. Epsilon was muttering, 'No, no, no, no, no.' Annabeth had her fists clenched and her eyes shut tight.

They pulled us along through the halls, turning left and right and left and right. I felt like I was going around in a circle.

Until we ended up in the room Epsilon had told us about. A single marble pillar, bare tables.

And chains; lots of chains.

While the shadows chained Piper, Annabeth, Angel, Flames and I to the wall behind us, Epsilon was dragged over the pillar and chained there. He was already shaking, anticipating what was coming. Piper and Annabeth were chained on the left side of the door, Flames, Angel and I on the right.

Annabeth was crying. Piper and Angel were shaking. Flames was roaring in anger, trying to start his fire powers. I was struggling against the chains to no avail.

Destruction entered the room, emerging from the door between Annabeth and me. He gazed around the room, looking unsurprised to see us all there.

'So,' he mused, 'You tried to stop my shadows. Very well. You shall face the consequence of that.'

I felt rather than saw everyone shiver.

He walked over to stand in front of Epsilon who did his best to stay strong. With his face still hidden under his hood, it looked convincing enough.

'Dear little demigod,' he mocked, 'Tell me, which of your friends shall go first.'

'Me!' Annabeth shouted, 'Hurt me!'

'NO!' though Epsilon must've been terrified, his voice carried throughout the room, 'I'm the one you want, Destruction. Leave them; don't hurt them. I am yours to take. Just let them go.'

'Tempting,' Destruction tapped his chin as if considering. He looked back at us. 'But I think not. I will, however, grant them mercy. As you ask, I shall not ... harm them. For now.'

He turned slowly to face Epsilon, 'I cannot say the same for you.'

Epsilon started to tremble. Destruction held out his hand and darkness poured out of it, just as Epsilon described. It wound its way to the pillar, twisting and swirling. When it got to the pillar, it melted right into the marble.

I saw Epsilon take a deep breath as Destruction clicked his fingers. The marble swirled with black and sparked with white lightning. When the energy inside of the column had built up so it couldn't hold anymore, it released all that energy into Epsilon.

From the first moment, his body began to shake. He was biting down on his lip so hard, he drew blood. It kept going until it got a stage where he couldn't hold it in any longer.

He let out a strangled scream that sounded like he was both trying to restrain it and let everything go. His body convulsed like he was having a fit and his skin went pale.

Then it stopped.

Annabeth was crying harder now, along with Angel and Piper. Flames had just got madder, bellowing in frustration. But within his shouts, I could clearly hear concealed sobs.

I can't say I was any less calm. I grabbed the chains around my wrists and pulled, trying to get free. When nothing happened I growled and tried to shape shift. Still nothing!

Epsilon hung limply, held up only by the chains wrapped around his wrists.

Destruction turned to face us, 'Who enjoyed that?'

Silence.

He only laughed, 'Predictable. Who want's to see that again?'

More silence. Annabeth glared at Destruction, her cheeks stained with tear tracks.

'Didn't think so,' Destruction continued, 'Now, if you don't want to see that again, you will tell me about your camps defences.'

Annabeth looked like she was considering. She opened her mouth when-

'No! Don't say anything!'

I was stunned that Epsilon had the strength to say anything at all. He pushed himself up so he was standing instead of hanging. He looked exhausted out of his mind, but he managed to stay standing.

'Do not say a thing,' he commanded us, 'Angel, Flames; I forbid you. I can't command the rest of you, so I beg of you; Do. Not. Say. Anything.'

Destruction glared at Epsilon over his shoulder, 'You're a real spoil sport, you know that?'

He clicked his fingers again. Epsilon twisted in agony, crumpling under the immense torture.

'Stop!' Annabeth screamed, 'Stop!'

It stopped.

'You have something to say, my dear?' Destruction smirked.

'No!' Epsilon called, 'Nothing!'

'This is too much,' Annabeth cried, 'I can't take it anymore! I will tell you if you stop.'

From across the room, I heard Epsilon mumble, 'Oh, no you won't.'

Then he took a deep breath and called softly, 'Sleep! Annabeth, sleep!'

She tried to fight, but the small amount of power he had was no match for her lack of any. Her eyes drooped until they shut completely. She hung from her chains, peacefully asleep.

Destruction roared in anger, 'You will pay for that!'

He clicked his fingers once more, generating even more power this time. Epsilon threw his head back. I shut my eyes and tried to block out the piercing screams, but it was no use.

It felt it didn't stop for an eternity. When it did, I opened my eyes to see Destruction sweeping out of the room, leaving Epsilon dangling from his chains, all his energy spent.

The shadows untied us and hauled us through the corridors, back to our cell. They threw us down on the cold stone floor. Piper leapt up immediately and banged on the door as it slammed shut, screaming, 'You monster!'

I helped Flames to his feet while Angel propped Annabeth up in a corner where she continued to sleep.

That's when I remembered.

'Epsilon!' I shouted, slapping my hand to my head.

Angel, Flames and I hurried over. Piper ran to get some water. Epsilon was lying face down on the concrete. We hauled him up and realized that he had passed out.

'No wonder,' Angel murmured, 'That was some pain he was forced to endure. We're lucky he's not dead.'

We leant him against a wall and Piper tipped a little water into his mouth.

We all looked him over. His lips were stained red with blood and his skin was whiter than paper. He had a burn down the side of his right leg, probably from the lightning racing across his skin.

He shuddered in his sleep.

'What are we going to do?' Flames asked.

'We're going to get out of here.'

No one had even heard Annabeth approach. We were all too concerned about Epsilon. Annabeth crouched down next to him and examined him quickly.

'How, Annabeth?' Piper said hopelessly, 'We have no power, our strongest warrior is slowly being ripped to pieces, and no one even knows where we are!'

Wow. Talk about a pep talk.

'We have to have hope,' Annabeth said, repeating the words she used with Epsilon earlier, 'Because without hope, we have nothing. We just have to believe we'll find a way.'

'Yeah,' I raised an eyebrow, 'But which way is that?'

Jason's POV

Three days now.

A whole three days without Piper. Oh, and Frank, Annabeth and the Chaos warriors.

I wondered what was going on with them .That torture scene was just a little too much for me. I almost threw up. Reyna did throw up.

Boy, Octavian was not pleased.

I rushed to a meeting in the Big House Rec Rom. I was the last one there. I hurried in and took my place next to Hazel and Chiron, who was already talking.

'-no new information,' he said. He looked up hopefully when I walked in, 'Jason. Have you-'

'Nothing,' I sighed.

His face fell. All around the table, shoulders were slumped and eyes looked weary.

'We'll find something,' Hazel tried to encourage everyone, 'We will.'

She received some grateful looks, but I guessed that they were just to humour her. Hazel seemed to realize that, too. She sunk back into her chair looking tired.

I gave her a smile, but she barely noticed. I couldn't really blame her.

'We can keep looking,' Chiron announced gravely, 'There may be places we haven't looked.'

'Where haven't we looked?' Iroas said, 'We've searched both camps, New York, Olympus. Nico even searched the Underworld. All the Chaos warriors' power cannot locate them.'

'There must be somewhere we haven't looked,' I muttered, 'Maybe a clue that we've overlooked. There must be-'

I faltered. I saw something flicker in the light from the small hanging lamp. A dark blur; the shadow of someone watching us.

I jumped up suddenly and the shadow froze.

'Jason?' Reyna, Hazel and Chiron said together.

I barely registered their words. I raced over to the door and chased the shade that bolted out of the room.

When I ran out of the Big House, the sunlight glared in my eyes. I thought I'd lost the shadow figure until I saw it out of the corner of my eye. Standing in the sun and blending with the landscape.

I walked in its general direction, acting confused and disoriented. The shadow seemed to buy it and stayed incredibly still.

When I was close enough, I struck; jumping on the shade. I wasn't sure whether or not I'd be able to make contact with it. But it was taken by surprise and I grabbed it, pinning it to the floor.

'What were you doing watching us?' I growled.

By then, the rest of the campers and Chaos warriors had come out of the Big House. Hazel gasped.

'Tell me!' I yelled.

'I do not answer to you,' the shadow whispered spitefully, its voice soft but clearly audible.

Hazel ran forward and pulled out her cavalry sword. She held it against the shadows throat.

'You will tell,' she demanded.

It hissed but kept its dark eyes on the sword in her hand.

'Lord Destruction sent me to spy on the plans of Camp Half-Blood. The captured ones have not cooperated.'

'Captured ones,' I whispered to Hazel, 'That must mean Piper and the others.'

She nodded in return, 'Where are the captured ones?'

It hissed again, 'The fortress of Lord Destruction.'

'Where is that?' I shouted.

'I must not tell.'

'Tel me!'

The shadow suddenly melted into darkness and I fell forward into the grass. I got up while Hazel sheathed her sword. Chiron cantered forward. His expression told me that he'd heard everything.

'The fortress of Destruction,' I said, 'Where could that be?'

Reyna, Sally, Octavian, Iroas and Drakon walked forward to join us.

'I don't know,' Hazel muttered, 'Perhaps Chaos will know?'

We all looked at Iroas and Drakon hopefully.

'We haven't been able to contact Chaos,' Iroas said miserably, 'Destruction is probably still interfering. We can't connect.'

'So we have to track down the fortress of Destruction,' Reyna said, 'We have to start looking.'

'And inform the other campers,' Sally added.

'Then lets go!' I shouted, 'We have to save the others!'

We all walked off to the Big House, feeling more hopeful than we had in days. For the first time, I felt like we had the start of a plan.

AN: There! Two chapters in one day. That was tough. I know I'm updating this a little late, but I have schoolwork, too.

Anyways, the general; please vote and comment, I love recieving them. I've almost reached 100 votes on this book. That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I don't have much to say, but if you want to read a chapter from the POV of someone in particular, comment or private message me. I love recieving ideas from fans!

And one last quick question for fun; If you were a demigod, who would be you're parent, and would you be Greek or Roman? For example; I am a Greek daughter of Poseidon!

Thanks again, guys. Cya!
