Thanks again for reading this! It makes me so happy. On with chapter 10! It's Leo and Hazel's POV ...
Chapter 11: A Cold Cell - Leo's POV
Dark.
That was my first thought.
Now, you may call me Captain Obvious, but it needed saying.
I was lying face down and could feel cold concrete beneath me. Opening my eyes and pushing myself into a sitting position, I looked around.
Nothing was visible.
I brought my hand up and gingerly touched the lump on my head. I winched. That was some hit. My head felt like someone had filled it with wet sand. My eyesight was fuzzy and my tongue was dry.
My next thought was that I wasn't alone. I listened carefully, and could hear the sounds of heavy breathing. As I listened closer, I could hear that the breathing was in an irregular pattern. There was more than one other. There was heaps of us in here.
'Hello?' I whispered the word, but it echoed around, indicating that we were in a small, enclosed space.
Someone stirred.
I could hear the clanking of metal, and that's when I realized that I was bound around the ankles. Thick, metal chains wrapped around my feet and latched to the wall. I could only assume that it was the same for the others in here.
'Who's there?'
That voice. I recognize that voice.
'Percy?'
'Leo?'
'Yeah,' I said, 'It's me.'
I heard him shuffle around, trying to get comfortable. But that's kinda hard when you're chained to a wall.
'Any idea what happened?' he called to me.
'None,' I replied, 'It's so dark. I can't see a thing.'
We stayed silent for a few moments, shivering in the cold room. I put my hand on the metal around my ankles and traced it all the way to the wall.
'What about fire?' Percy said suddenly, 'Your fire. Can you light it?'
I wanted to bang my head against a wall. Fire! How could I have not thought of that earlier?
I held my hand out, willing flames to leap up from my palm.
Nothing happened.
'Gods, damn it!' I yelled, along with some pretty nasty Greek curses. Hey, I was frustrated.
My shouts woke the other people in the room that I now figured was a cell. They called out to each other;
'What happened?'
'Who's there?'
'Piper?'
'Annabeth?'
'Yeah! Where are we?'
'I don't know.'
'Guys, what happened?'
'Frank!'
'Frank!'
'Yeah, whats going on?'
'We don't know.'
'Hey guys,' I interrupted, 'We're in some kind of cell.'
'Who's that?' I heard from Piper.
'Its Flames,' I said, hoping she wouldn't give me away.
'L-Flames!' Phew!
'Maybe we should have a roll call,' I suggested, 'Everyone shout out your names, 'cause its too dark to see.'
'Annabeth.'
'Piper.'
'Frank.'
'Epsilon.'
'Flames.'
'Angel.'
'Angel?' Percy called out, 'You're here?'
'We'll obviously, Epsilon. Otherwise I wouldn't have said so,' there was a suggestive eye roll in her voice, 'I woke when Flames said to shout out our names.'
'Oh,' I said, 'Good to have you on board, Angel.'
'You're glad that I'm in a freezing cell in who-knows-where?' Bianca asked me.
'Well, no. But I'm glad you're with us.'
'Oh, ok.'
'Guys,' Percy shouted, 'We have to figure out a way to get out of here.'
Suddenly, the door burst open. But no one was there.
Light flooded into the room and I could see the others chained to the walls of a room that felt no bigger than three meters squared.
I looked at Percy, who shrugged and shook his head, 'Wasn't me. No power in here.'
Then, outlines became visible. Vaguely human like shapes made of pure darkness. They looked a little like the Chaos warriors when they teleported, except these figures had a much more sinister feel to them.
Shadows, I realized.
They were the people who conked us out and dragged us here. They were the reason that my head felt like a bowling ball.
The figures continuously faded in and out as they moved towards us. There were six of them all together, one for each of us.
For something that looked like smoke, they felt incredibly solid. The one that came for me, unlocked the chains around my ankles and hauled me to my feet. Its grasp on my arm felt very sturdy and very real.
We were marched out in single file. The shadows pulled us down endless corridors. I tried to keep track of where we turned; left, right, left, left, right, left, right, right, left. Eventually, I lost count. I hoped Percy had more luck remembering where we were.
We finally arrived in an enormous throne room. I looked like a replica of the gods throne room on Olympus, except everything was pitch black. Even the fire blazing in the torches along the walls was the colour of coal.
And there was only one throne.
Walking down long hall, I felt small and insignificant. Judging from the cornered looks on the others faces, the felt the same.
We reached the throne, and the shadows forced us to kneel. My knees scraped painfully on the black stone floor, yet I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of knowing that.
The man sitting on the throne exerted power and evil. I could feel it as much as I could see it. He was dressed in a black robe that twisted and screamed like it was alive. His long, inky hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and his eyes made me think of everything bad that had ever happened to me. They swirled with each and every terrible human emotion; hate, anger, lust, jealousy.
I looked away form him to stop the raging torrent of emotions now flooding through me. Without having to be told, I knew that this man was Destruction.
'How nice of you all to pay me a visit,' his voice sounded like evil itself; as ancient as the universe.
We all just glared up at him.
'Come now,' he taunted, 'You are my guests. This is no way to treat you host.'
'Host!' Percy spat, 'Guests! Don't flatter yourself. We are not your guests, we are your prisoners.'
Destruction nimbly leapt off his throne and crouched in front of Percy.
'Commander Epsilon,' he jeered, 'The mightiest, the bravest, the one who saved over again. Where has that all got you? A place in my prison cells.'
'Speak nothing of my past, Destruction,' Percy bellowed, 'You have no rights. You will never win this war.'
Destruction's eyes flashed. In a sudden movement, his hand lashed out and gripped Percy's face, who recoiled. But Destruction's grip was strong.
'I don't think so, demigod,' he breathed, 'I will win this war. And you are going to help me.'
He dropped his hand and stood up, turning to return to his throne. Percy glared up at him with hatred, and I imagined his eyes flashing beneath his hood.
'Never,' he mumbled. Then he shouted, 'I will never help you.'
Destruction froze. Percy's last words echoed around the space, making it eerily quiet when the sound died down. No one spoke for a while.
Finally, Destruction looked over his shoulder at the commander.
'We shall see.'
Then, with a wave of his hand, the shadows picked us all up and delivered us back to the cells. But they no longer bound our ankles with chains. Maybe it slipped their minds. If you can have a mind when you're a shadow.
When the door to our cell finally clanged shut, we all shivered in fear. Someone had evidently lit a torch since we'd been gone. Regular firelight danced around the room, highlighting the cold concrete floor and similar walls. Whippie.
'What now?' Piper whispered.
Percy shook his head, 'I don't know.'
'What do you mean he meant by "we shall see"?' Annabeth directed her question at Percy, 'Epsilon?'
Again, he shook his head despairingly.
We heard a grunt of frustration, and we looked around to see Frank shaking, his eyes closed and his hands balled into fists.
'Frank?' Piper asked.
Another grunt. Then he let his hands fall limply to his sides and opened his eyes.
'Trying to change,' he said miserably, 'My shape shifting wont work.'
'Neither will my fire,' I said.
Percy closed his eyes, then opened them after a few moments, 'Nor the powers of Chaos.'
'Man, Destruction must be pretty powerful to dampen Chaos' powers,' Bianca spoke up. She'd been so quiet, I'd almost forgotten she was there.
'Indeed,' Percy leaned his head against the wall wearily, careful not to let his hood slip back to reveal his face.
'Angel,' I said, 'We're in the earth. Maybe you powers will be stronger.'
She thought about my reasoning, then clicked her fingers. The concrete rumbled. I thought that a skeleton warrior would burst forth from the ground, but the rumbling only died out, leaving Bianca disappointed and a little more tired.
'Nothing,' she whispered.
'We have to think of a plan,' Annabeth announced, 'There has to be some way out.'
'How?' Frank asked, 'None of our powers will work.'
'The Chaos warriors will come after us,' I said confidently.
'And the campers,' Piper agreed with the same determination, 'We'll get out of this. We just have to have hope.'
'Hope,' Percy repeated. He looked as sad as I'd ever seen him, 'It has hard to have hope, when you no longer remember what it means.'
Hazel's POV
I rushed to the meeting point.
I'd checked the cabin area. Nothing. Maybe the others would've had more luck.
When I arrived at the sword arena, Nico, Jason, Reyna, Octavian and Chiron were already there. All of them appeared crestfallen. They looked up hopefully as I approached, only to slump back down again when I shook me head in despair.
'Nothing' Reyna asked.
'Nothing,' I admitted.
'Where have they gone?' Jason yelled, slamming his fist into the wall, 'Where are they? We need them.'
'Calm down, my boy,' Chiron said gravely, 'The others may have found them yet.'
Then, one of the Chaos warriors, Iroas, jogged into the arena.
'Most of the woods have been searched,' he informed shakily, 'My warriors are finishing up the last bit. We haven't found them. But ... we did find this in a clearing.'
He held out a bronze knife which Jason immediately grabbed.
'Katoptris,' I whispered, 'Piper's knife.'
Jason caressed it gingerly, like it would magically bring Piper back to him. It was false hope, though.
Then someone else stepped into the arena.
'There rest of the woods have been searched, nothing else has been found,' it was a girl, one of the Chaos warriors.
'Thanks, Drakon,' Iroas slumped like the rest of us, 'Do we know who's missing?'
She nodded looking dejected, 'From our side, we're missing Angel, Flames and-' she swallowed, '-Epsilon.'
We were all silent. The most powerful person we had on our side, our biggest advantage, was now quite possibly in the hands of our enemies.
Iroas finally broke the silence, 'And from your side?'
'Annabeth, Frank and Piper,' I murmured, 'Gods, I'm so stupid. I was with him. If I had made him come down with me, he would still be here.'
'Don't blame yourself, Hazel,' Jason sounded like he was blaming himself, though.
'Absolutely,' Chiron agreed, 'Blame turns only into trouble.'
More silence. I had a feeling that we were all secretly blaming ourselves, even Chiron. I knew that if I had stayed with Frank, he would never have been kidnapped. Jason was probably thinking the same about Piper. Iroas and Drakon thinking similarly about their kidnapped friends.
'We gotta rescue them,' my sudden outburst surprised everyone, including me.
Even more surprising, my brother, Nico, joined in.
'She's right. We can't just stand around blaming ourselves. We have to start looking!'
Reyna, Iroas and Drakon shouted, 'Yeah!'
Octavian and Jason looked a little skeptic while Chiron nodded to show his support. I felt a tiny fire of hope rise up inside me. Maybe this could work.
'Come on,' Reyna encouraged the other two, 'We will never win this war if we don't get them back. And what are you going to accomplish by standing around doing nothing?'
Slowly, the two of them began to grin. Then they pumped their fists into the air and shouted, 'Yeah!'
The fire in me grew into a forest blaze. We could do this.
'So,' Iroas said, 'Does anyone have any idea how we can find them?'
Silence once more. The fire suddenly shrunk and dissipated, the last of my hope curling away with it. No one seemed in a hurry to respond. To say what we all knew was true.
Finally, I sighed, 'None.'
