"Where are we?" I ask as the TARDIS lands, then add as an afterthought, "And when?"

"Epsom Downs Racecourse, 1913."

"No way!" I reply, my eyes wide. "It's the Epsom Derby – the day Emily Wilding Davison sacrifices herself for the female suffrage movement!"

"Oh I met her once," The Doctor replies, looking reminiscent. "Do you wanna say hello?"

"I'd love to!" The Doctor grabs her coat and follows me out of the door and into the mass of people outside. "How did no one notice the TARDIS landing?"

"Human beings – completely ignorant. Stick a big blue box on the middle of a crowd, people just walk on past."

"Hey, we're not all like that!" I protest, affronted. "I noticed it!"

The Doctor grins over at me. "I guess you did! Oops, sorry!" A harried-looking woman bumps into her, dropping something from her hand.

I bend down to pick it up, then note the purple, green and white stripes and my eyes widen in surprise.

"Miss Davison," I breathe, handing her back the rosette and shaking her hand. "It's an honour to meet you. All your work for female suffrage! You're inspirational. You've really shown the world what us women are capable of."

"Thank you," she replies, slightly stunned. "Are you a suffragette as well, child?"

"More of a suffragist, to be honest," I admit. "Not a big fan of the violence." The Doctor smiles in agreement from beside me, but Emily's face contorts.

"Actions speak louder than words. Have it your way and we won't get the vote for another century. Now if you'll excuse me..."

Before she goes, a thought occurs to me. "It's a bit of a surprise to see you here today, Miss Davison. Are you here for the race? Only, I noticed the rosette in your hand."

"As I said, " Emily replies, "actions speak louder than words. Good day." Within seconds, she disappears within the crowd.

I turn back to the Doctor, feeling lost. "So did she commit suicide, or was it just an accident?"

The Doctor looks thoughtfully after her. "I guess we'll never know."
