Chapter 41
Nalia's POV
"Ms. Chen, you have a guest, she's coming in right now," My secretary tells me through the intercom.
The double doors open and Granny walks in like she's on a runway show.
"Child, you have got to help your granny with the wedding planning. I'm hopeless here" She sat down elegantly crossing her legs.
"I will granny, I'll find you the best planners out there and you'll be slightly released from the stress" I said making her smile in content.
"So, I heard you took Diamond in, a few months ago. Where is she now?" Granny asked placing a fist under her chin.
I look up from the papers on my desk.
"Oh, she's back at her parents home," I tell her looking back down continuing what I was doing.
"I thought she was staying with you?" I sighed resting my back on the leather desk chair.
"Diamond stole from me that's why I sent her back to where she belonged." I gritted out already over the direction this conversation is going.
"I knew she couldn't be trusted" She whispered to herself.
"Granny, who told you about this," I asked her perplexedly.
"I kept tabs on you, and before you tell, it's me it's all for good reasons. I wanted to know if you were safe that's why" I nod my head before sitting back up to finish up these documents.
My cellphone rings, I look over at the screen and it's an unknown number.
I usually don't answer these kinds of calls but something in me told me to pick it up.
"Child, it's ringing" Granny voices out gesturing to my phone.
I wrapped my fingers around the phone, slid the answer button across the screen and placed it on my ear.
"Oh thank God!" Immediately I recognized the voice.
"Please, please don't hang up" Just as I was about to pull the cellphone away from my ear Diamond's beseeching tone stopped me.
"What do you want? I thought I told you I never want to hear from you again. Huh?" I gritted through my clenched teeth.
Granny sat up from the couch walking in front of my desk.
"Who is it?" She mouthed and I used my left hand to write 'Diamond' on a post-it note.
Granny nods her head going back to where she previously sat.
"Nalia, I know I'm one of the last people you want to hear from but Dad had a car accident last night and he's in a coma" Diamond informs with her voice cracking almost like she wanted to cry.
Although, I don't care much for them anymore they're still my blood relatives.
"What hospital is he at?" I asked her keeping my tone leveled.
"Jamaica Hospital Medical Center" She answered quickly.
"I'll be there soon," I told her before hanging up.
"Granny, my father is at the hospital and I'm going to see what happened. I'll meet you at the dress shop at around 3:30 pm. Alright?" I pack my things into my purse and ran over to where she sat kissing her cheek.
"Bye-bye, please be safe," She tells me placing a kiss on my forehead.
"Ok" I made an 'O' sign with my fingers.
I enter the elevator pressing the basement button leading to the parking lot.
Since I came to the office on my motorcycle I decided to ride it instead of the already reserved Range Rover I have parked here in the lot.
I wore my leather jacket, zipping it up to my neck and wrapped the lengthy strapped bag over my shoulder.
Settling on the motorcycle, I place the helmet securely on my head and put the keys inside the ignition and rode out the parking lot into the busy streets of Manhattan.
Time skip...
I made a good decision to ride the motorcycle because I got to the specific hospital earlier than expected.
Parking on the side of the road adjacent from where the hospital was, I put coins inside the parking meter, to avoid getting a ticket for illegal parking.
I walked into the entrance of the hospital going straight to where a group of different nurses are.
"Hello, good afternoon" I politely greeted the elderly woman who smiled at me.
"Hi, how may I help you?" She asked in a softer tone that fits kind features.
"Umm, I'm here to see Ernesto Andrews, he's my father," I told her smiling nervously.
"Oh, he was rushed in here late last night, he's in room 225 the second floor" I nod my head thanking her.
I brought out my boldface walking to the room I was told he was in.
Softly knocking on the door I opened it, walking inside to see Diamond sitting by the window wiping her eyes and Talia sitting beside the bed holding her husband's hand.
I heard Diamond gasp in surprise running to where I stood, she hugged me.
My hands stay by their sides just looking forward not saying a word.
"I thought you weren't going to come" Diamond blurts out after removing her arms around me.
I gave her a tight-lipped smile before walking towards the bed.
"What happened? She told me he's in a coma." I asked Talia who still sat on the stool sniffling.
"He was drunk driving and he crashed into a street pole completely destroying his car and hitting his head. The coma is only temporary the doctor induced it for self-healing to his brain" Talia informs me whilst still staring at her husband longingly.
She stood up abruptly dusting her dress of wrinkles and whatnots.
"Nalia can you please take a walk with me?" She asked me and I nodded exiting the room first.
"Thank you for coming, it was very nice of you" Talia voices out smiling sadly.
"I know we haven't had the best mother and daughter relationship but I hope you forgive me, your father and sister. We are still your blood after all" I bit on my bottom lip to refrain from the cold unapologetic way her tone sounded.
It's like she has no remorse for what they all put me through all these years.
All the verbal abuse and manipulative words to guilt me into doing their demands.
I wouldn't say I'm fully over it but I still want no I mean need to hear a sincere apology come out of their mouths.
"Talia, we're very similar in some way," I said breaking the pregnant silence.
"How so?" She turns her head to the side curious to what I had to say.
"Moms" That was the word to leave my mouth.
I look over at Talia, her eyebrows knitted together and her lips pursed.
"My grandmother, your mother was physically absent. While you, my mother is emotionally distant. Do you now see the correspondence?" I told her gazing towards the flower pots sitting by the windows near the bench we sat.
I stood up and turned around to say something.
"I'll send a check, I hope this is the last time we see each other. Goodbye Mom." I said before exhaling the breath I didn't realize I was holding.
I coolly walked back to the area where the kind nurse from earlier was stationed.
I said a few words and goodbyes before heading to the direction of the hospital exit.
I took my phone out of the bag and called Granny.
"Hey sweetheart, how'd it go?" She asked rushingly.
"It was fine, I don't feel too good. Sorry, I won't be able to meet up with you anymore" I blew out a shaky breath feeling my eyes start to burn.
"Aww, it's alright sweetie go home and take the rest of the day off. I'll handle the rest of your workload. Stay safe love you" Granny tells me in an affectionate tone before she hung up.
When she said that last part I broke down bending to my knees crying my heart out.
"Miss, are you okay?" I heard a concerned voice ask beside me.
I look up at the stranger, teary-eyed and snotty-nosed.
"No, nothing is okay. I-I'm not okay!" I screamed looking back down on the concrete ground furiously wiping the uncontrollable water works.
The young lady discreetly backed up walking away.
My tears fell on their own, the mental pain I felt all these years had finally penetrated my emotional anguish.
"Good riddance family," I said standing up to my feet and wiping the strayed tears.
I reached into my bag once again, grabbing a hold of my sunglasses and placed it over my eyes.
Holding my head up as I walked back to my motorcycle parked on the other side of the road.
