Chapter Twenty-Two
Now, in a normal world, this situation would be kind of funny, but this isn't a normal world. How can it be, I've just discovered that the love of my life is the lead singer of Fall Out Boy, and now the rest of the band have burst in on us. Awkward.
The mix of expressions on the guy's faces is hilarious. Pete looks furious. Patrick looks terrified. Joe looks amused. Andy looks like he really wants to leave.
Pete is the first to break the silence, mainly because it's clear nobody else is going to. "Ok, someone tell me this is a dream."
"This is a dream?" says Joe, eyebrows raised slightly.
"Damn it. I'd never have a dream with you in." He looks at Patrick. "Mind explaining this?"
Patrick stares at the floor. I will him to say something, but he doesn't. So I do. "He's my boyfriend. Is that an issue?" I ask, sticking my chin out.
Pete looks taken aback, but then hardens his gaze. "And you know about Fall Out Boy?"
"Yes."
"Since when?"
Pete turns to Patrick. "And you didn't think to mention this? I didn't even know you were dating." Joe clears his throat and Pete turns to him. "Oh god. Don't tell me. You knew?"
Now it's Andy and Joe's turn to look at the floor. "Uh, yeah," says Andy.
Pete sighs. "I don't even know what to say to that." He looks at Patrick. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I knew that you'd react like this! Why can't you just be happy that I'm not having panic attacks or being generally screwed up? I'm actually socializing, for once." He folds his arms.
Pete shakes his head. "I am happy for you," he insists.
Patrick raises an eyebrow. "You're not acting like it."
"Just stop it, ok?" I yell. They all look shocked for a moment, and seeing as this is kind of the reaction I was hoping for, I continue. "Look, Patrick can do whatever the hell he wants. Who are you, his mother?" Hell yeah, I just sassed a member of Fall Out Boy.
Pete scowls. "If people find out about this, what do you think will happen? Do you think the fans will just leave him alone? I mean, we could deal with it, but Patrick? He'd be a nervous wreck."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence," mutters Patrick.
"I'm just trying to be realistic here," Pete continues. "You get me?"
My face falls as I realize that he's right. Patrick would never be able to cope with that. He'd have a nervous breakdown at the very least. I don't even want to consider it. "Ok. Sorry." I look at my feet.
Patrick breathes in and out slowly. Oh dear sweet lord. This is not a good sign. This is what he does when he goes into sass mode. Help us all.
"Don't talk to her like that, or it will be the last thing you ever do," he growls, balling his hands into fists. Pete looks stunned, and so Patrick continues. "You have absolutely no right to say any of that to Lydia, or me, and let me just remind you that this is my apartment, so if you carry on acting like this, you will be out on your ass before you can say 'apologize'. Is that clear?"
Pete stares at him, dumbstruck. Then he nods, slowly, and collapses onto the old, broken sofa. He looks at the others for a minute, and then turns to me and says, "Girl, you have one sassy boyfriend. Do you know that?"
Patrick suppresses a smile. "She knows, all right." Then we have a long silence that lasts for literally several minutes. Oh god, this is awkward.
"So..." Joe starts talking, and then he realizes that there's not really a lot to say. We sit in silence for a few more minutes.
You see, the problem with situation is that it is so intensely awkward. Patrick doesn't want to talk because... well, because he's Patrick, Pete doesn't want to talk because he's probably still annoyed, Andy doesn't want to talk because he doesn't want to be the one to break the silence, and Joe doesn't want to talk because... Actually, I don't know. The mechanics of Joe Trohman's brain elude me completely. So I guess it's up to me.
"This is ridiculous," I say. They all give me daggers, probably for breaking the silence, but never mind. I don't really care right now. "Are we going to communicate, or what?" Still, they're silent. "Actually, why are you even here? You obviously came for something, so at least do that."
Pete sighs. "We just came to drop these off." He reaches inside Joe's bag and pulls out a sheaf of papers. "Songwriting. You know. Joe and I have been working on a new song."
"How come?" asks Andy. "We haven't even properly completed the last album yet. Thanks to Joe" - here, he breaks off to give Joe a look - "American Beauty/ American Psycho is way behind schedule."
"Dude, when are you going to let that go?" grumbles Joe.
"Probably never."
"To be fair, I've been writing too," says Patrick. Andy looks at him for a minute.
"Oh great, am I the only person who hasn't been writing?"
"It sure looks like it," says Pete, smiling. "I wouldn't worry about it. To be honest, you're right. We do need to finish off this album before we move on to the next."
"Thanks to Trohman here," mutters Patrick. Joe buries his face in his hands.
"I said I was sorry! In fact, I said it like a million times!"
"That's an exaggeration," says Andy.
"You know what I mean! Come on, you're acting like I meant to do it!"
"Do what?" I ask. Andy, Pete and Patrick exchange a smile.
"Ok. Have you ever looked at our YouTube channel and wondered why the songs on American Beauty/ American Psycho are all available as singles, but the entire album is not?" I shake my head, and so Pete continues. "Usually, when we make an album or an EP or whatever, we'll record each song one by one, and then put them all together to make the album, whilst at the same time keeping copies of each song to be released as singles. It saves us having to re-record them, you see." Pete stops there, and starts giggling, so Andy carries on.
"Now, because Patrick and I are best at doing that, we're usually in charge of doing it. However, with American Beauty/ American Psycho, Joe begged us to let him do it. Don't even ask why. So we did. But when it came down to putting each of the songs on the album, we discovered that Joe had somehow managed to get the singles so that couldn't be put together into an album. They could only be released on their own, so that's what we had to do. So now, in order to have the entire album on there, we have to re-record the whole thing."
Joe sighs. "I really hate you guys, you know that?" However, whatever he says is no use, because Patrick , Pete and Andy are all having a laughing fit, and I must admit that, to some extent, I join in. It is pretty funny, I guess.
So we're all sitting there, laughing our heads off, and it occurs to me that this is the first time in a long, long while that the four have them have actually been together, and, more importantly, have actually been getting on. And it can't just be me who thinks that, because when we eventually calm down, they look at each other, and their smiles fade just a little bit.
