Epilogue >> Chapter 05
u n e d i t e d
Echoing throughout Levi's thoughts roams his unspoken past as he stares blankly at the endless cement ceiling. Newspaper clippings, maps, and data charts were plastered neatly across the cracked walls. Levi's small bed ached his aging body, it's metallic structure displeased the man's taste but it was the best he could do in such an underground hideout. Such a bed was sanitary and easily kempt.
The man's thoughts wandered freely, his mind unraveling before him. A short lived life flashes before his eyes as he is enveloped in a story untold. Slowly, his eyes rest shut.
A mother stands before him. She is well dressed in white, a mask over her mouth. Levi, a small boy at the time, kicks his feet as he scribbles red on blank paper.
"Belle mére," says Levi as he doodles.
"Yes?" His mother responds, slipping on a pair of medical gloves.
"Is he any better?" Levi asks, his eyes never leaving the red mess.
Without confirmation, his mother immediately new of who he was speaking of. She smiles softly, even though it is unnoticeable behind the medical mask. "I'm sure your father will be well soon."
Levi believed his mother's words as she disappeared into the room that concealed his ill father. Levi was no younger then eleven years when his father grew ill. It didn't hurt him when he passed away that spring. It didn't hurt him that he never said goodbye.
What hurt Levi was the very fact that he believed in his mother's lie.
Levi sighs heavily and presses a small button on his watch, his eyes still closed. Bright lights escaped the small technological device, screening the ceiling above him. Using muscle memory Levi enters his four digit code, unlocking several hidden files. His tired eyes pry open and are met by a list of files on a hologram.
Unconsciously, Levi opens a file entitled Mére. Tapping the screen with his index finger several video files are at his reach. Of course, he selects one.
December 25
The video plays, the audio is raised for only him to hear. Levi rests his arm around his abdomen and watches the recording.
His mother begins the video by setting up an old camera. She is smiling as she announces the date, moving aside for the camera to film a small Levi smiling excitedly over a large cake.
Levi's mother kisses him on the cheek and tells him to wave at the camera. He does as he is told, his birthday candles melting before him.
Levi's older self unconsciously touches his left cheek, remembering the cool feel of his mother's lips pressed against his skin. He pauses the video at the exact moment his mother looks into the camera.
Levi gazes at her. Her long black hair was perfectly tied into a loose ponytail. It was brushed across her shoulder and slightly frizzed. His mother's dark eyes wrinkled at the ends, something he always loved. Levi reaches for the hologram of his mother, his throat itching.
Oh how he wishes to feel his mother's embrace once more.
"Um, Mr. Levi?" A teenage voice echoes outside his door.
Levi jumps in his skin, startled by the boy's voice. He quickly cancels the rest of the video and clears his throat.
"Come in," he orders. His words were innocent yet so demanding. Chills ran down the boy's spine as he slides the iron door open.
"Mr. Levi-"
"Levi," the raven haired man cuts off.
"Eh-?"
"Just call me Levi, kid."
Eren's teak eyes couldn't help but wander away from Levi's as he feels his body tense. "Okay, Levi. I was just stopping by before the night ends to ask you something," Eren says, refocusing his attention to the older man.
"What is it?" He asks, a sigh escaping his lips as he spoke. Already losing interest in the conversation, Levi presses his back against the wall, arms crossing.
Eren notices his boredom. "Well, I was just wanting to ask why I was resting in a separate room from the others," Eren pauses for a moment, avoiding eye contact. Eren sighs, "we are leaving tomorrow. My companions and I, we have important tasks awaiting us elsewhere."
"Then I'm coming with you."
Eren's eyes widen. Before he was able to speak, Levi interrupts him once more.
"You and the blond kid, something is up with you two. Besides, I can't have kids wandering around these lands," Levi's eyes flicker upwards, piercing right through Eren making him break into a sweat.
"Armin and I? What can possibly be 'up' with us?" Eren gives an uncomfortable chuckle.
"You two are hiding something, and I'd like to know what it is you two don't want others to have knowledge of."
Hello there, long time no see huh? Well I finally updated, it feels like forever. I'm still alive, don't worry. I'm just having trouble progressing the story so any helpful suggestions are welcome :).
This chapter is shit. All hands down, no tricks or sweet talk. It's a complete mess but it adds to the story. This chapter will go under editing along with the rest as I reach the end.
Will I finish this story? Yes.... Eventually.
