THE air was different, much more refreshing than it was in the city. The sun rays peaked through the treeline, falling against her skin in small streaks as she silently observed the campsite — an array of tents set up over the open ground, anchored into the dirt to prevent it from blowing away with the wind.
The tent mates were made up quite fast, as girls would be staying with each other — same situation for the boys. Luckily, Haewon found herself a neat spot in a tent shared amongst herself, Miyeon and two other girls as it was quite a large space.
“It's so nice out here.” Jang Miyeon sighed out, stretching her arms above her head as Haewon turned to look at her, watching as she joined at her side.
“It is. It's very refreshing. The air is clear.” Haewon added on with a smile, arms folded over her chest as she bathed in the warm, spring air. “Though, the mosquitoes aren't very fun.”
Miyeon chuckled, a sigh falling from her lips as she nodded her head. “Oh, tell me about it.” The girl scoffed, shaking her head off to the side repeatedly. “I completely forgot to pack bug spray.”
“Me too. I'm just hoping Heeseung was more prepared, because I'll be stealing from him if he has any.” Haewon breathed out with a laugh, lifting her hands up to tie her hair into a low bun.
“Oh, yeah, hopefully. If not, I think my boyfriend should have some. If you need any, just let me know.” Miyeon offered, giving the girl a smile as Haewon hummed and nodded happily.
“Really? Thank you, Miyeon.” Haewon returned the smile gratefully, as the other girl could only hum and nod in return.
“Don't mention it.” Miyeon chuckled, brushing it off with the simple wave of her hand, carrying herself over to sit down on a vacant bench nearby as she gestured for Haewon to join her.
Sitting on the wooden bench, Haewon's eyes wandered around the campsite, a mix of familiar and unfamiliar faces filling her vision as she pursed her lips.
“I meant to ask you, but how are things going? With you and Heeseung?” Miyeon questioned, fingertips drumming curiously against the side of her own leg.
“Hm..? Things are going well. I haven't made a move or anything like that.” Haewon replied with a shrug, a smile settled onto her lips as she gazed down at her lap. “If it counts, we— uhm.” She paused, cheeks tinted pink.
Miyeon raised her eyebrows, bumping shoulders with Haewon as she laughed and tilted her head.
“You what? Spit it out! I'm curious now.” Miyeon giggled, eyes brightening as she stared curiously at the girl, waiting patiently for a response.
“I don't know. Just, cheek kisses have become a habit between us now. And— and hand holding. Physical touch in general.” She emitted softly, as Miyeon smiled.
“Awe, that's so sweet.” Miyeon cooed, placing a hand over her heart for dramatic effect. “Cheek kisses? And you're sure he doesn't like you back?”
“I'm not sure. That's what's scary about it. What if it's just platonic?” Haewon let out, brows tied in a knot as Miyeon scoffed at her dense nature.
“If it was just platonic between you two, it would have been something made a habit many, many years ago.”
“Honestly, probably since childhood. The fact that it's only starting now and just so happens to be mixed with hand holding and stuff like that leads me to believe he feels the same way.” Miyeon reasoned, as Haewon sighed and nodded.
“You never fail to give me logical reasons about this.” Haewon pointed out, crossing her arms over her chest.
“I try my best.” Miyeon chuckled, waving it off. “Anyway, I say take a chance. You never know what could happen.” She added, lips tucked into a thin line.
“I'll see what I can do. I'll try to be more direct, but if I really can't, don't blame me.” Haewon spoke up, as Miyeon nodded softly in response.
“That's fine. The fact that you're even considering trying is an effort in itself. If you feel like you're not ready to act on something, don't feel pressured to. Things are better off when they go at your own pace.” The slightly older girl advised, as Haewon hummed and nodded.
Miyeon pulled herself to her feet, sticking out a hand for Haewon to take as she wore a smile, beckoning her own with a subtle tilt of her head.
“Come on. Apparently, we're gonna be doing an opening campfire tonight. Might as well freshen up before then, yeah?” Miyeon raised a brow, as Haewon huffed and smiled, taking her hand.
“Do you have any clue what we're going to be doing during this weekend?” Haewon questioned, as Miyeon took in a small breath, swinging her arm around her shoulder as she pulled her to the bathrooms.
“Mm, obviously, hiking. And I think at some point — either tomorrow or Sunday, we're having a scavenger hunt of some sort. I heard Mrs. Kim talking about it.” Miyeon noted, lip pressed together in a thin line.
“Oh, and maybe some water activities? There are kayaks that we can rent out and use. Maybe we'll do that?” Miyeon tilted her head.
“Is it weird that I've never been in a kayak before?” Haewon asked, narrowing her eyes ever so slightly.
“Not really..? I mean, I didn't ever go in one until last year. Minjun took me out to a two week camp with his family, it was fun.” Miyeon smiled at the memory.
“That's cute. You and him are perfect together, you know. Like you both bring out the best in each other. It's adorable.” Haewon commented, as Miyeon smiled brightly, cheeks flushing pink as she laughed.
“Thank you. I'm really happy with him. And Haewon, I hope you can find that, too. With a certain someone, of course.” Miyeon smiled, taking on a teasing tone of voice towards the end.
Haewon scoffed, nose scrunching up slightly as she rolled her eyes playfully and nudged her friend lightly, as they pushed open the door to the communal women's restroom.
