“THANKS for walking me home.” Haewon breathed out, turning to face him as they stopped in front of her parents'house. “I'll see you tomorrow?”
“Mhm. See you tomorrow.” Heeseung smiled, nodding his head as he opened his arms for a hug, of which she gladly accepted before pulling away.
“Don't be late this time.” He teased, earning an eye roll as she shook her head, walking up the porch step to her front door as she waved goodbye.
Using the key hidden under the plant pot on the ground by the front door, Heeseung waited until she successfully got safely inside her home before beginning his own walk back home.
As Haewon entered her home, her eyes wandered around the dark house. Her eyes fell upon the doorway to the living room, the soft glow of the TV brightening up the area as the reflection of light on the wooden floors changed color with each frame displayed on the TV screen itself.
The quiet murmuring of the television filled her ears, as she carefully slipped her shoes off of her feet, leaving them by the front door as she adjusted her backpack on her shoulders.
Attempting to be quiet, her steps were slow and calculated as she didn't wish to draw attention to her arrival at the semi-late hour of the night.
Only, her wishes weren't granted and she was instead betrayed by a creaky floorboard, her body weight shifting as she stepped down on it.
She winced as it creaked beneath her socked feet, freezing in place as she held her breath for a moment. Assuming she was clear, she continued her movements, trying to make it upstairs and into her bedroom without being seen as she didn't want to face either of her parents.
“Haewon,” a voice called out, as she froze once more, breath hitching at the sound of her name falling past his lips, deep voice filling the silence.
“Come here, now.” Mr. Seong called out, as she placed a hand on the railing of the staircase, leaning up against it as she hung her head low, taking a deep breath as she bit down on her bottom lip.
Uncaring of how much noise she made after that, she hesitantly carried herself to the living room, eyes falling upon her father's figure resting on the couch, eyes trained on the TV screen before shifting to her.
“Where have you been all day?” He questioned, stern as he stared into the eyes of his very own daughter, who held in a mix of emotions as she balled up her fists at her side.
“Heeseung's.” She replied shortly, her best friend's name slipping from her lips weakly as she cowered in the presence of her father.
“Do you know how disrespectful you are to me? You couldn't even look me in the eye this morning— or even face me for that matter.” Mr. Seong scoffed, shaking his head as he clenched his jaw.
“And all for what? To hang out with your little boyfriend?” He added, as Haewon furrowed her brows, gaze sharpening slightly.
“He’s not my boyfriend. You know that.” She spoke up, shaking her head off to the side softly as he chuckled dryly.
“Do I? Because you don't talk to me at all, it feels like I don't know you at all.” The man commented, staring at her in the dim lighting the television provided.
“Maybe because you're never around to talk to.” Haewon countered, biting down on her bottom lip as she watched the expression of her father convert, a mix of emotions displayed openly on his face as he masked a state of anger behind a stoic expression.
“Are you serious?” He breathed out, words coming out in a hushed, breathy tone as he furrowed his brows.
“You want to talk? Then let's talk. Where are you all the time? You get off work at six. But you're never home until late. Wanna explain what that's about?” Haewon tilted her head, jaw clenched as her own mix of anger and adrenaline fueled her.
Her hands trembled slightly as she curled them up, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.
“You’re ridiculous.” Mr. Seong shook his head, sitting upright on the couch as his eyes narrowed slightly, leg bouncing up and down.
“You’re an ungrateful brat. I gave everything to raise you, and this is how you treat me?” Mr. Seong spoke harshly, as Haewon released a shaky breath.
“What are you talking about? You didn't raise me at all.” Haewon pointed out, heart pounding in her chest as she flinched slightly in surprise, stumbling back slightly as she watched the man jump from his seat.
“I'm the only one who does anything for this family! It's you who took my whole damn life away, and you're still a disrespectful little shit!” Mr. Seong exclaimed, voice bouncing off of the walls.
At the sudden shout of aggression, the creaking of the floorboards upstairs filled the silence as the girl stood breathlessly in front of him, shocked at his outburst.
Hurried steps came rushing downstairs as Haewon’s eyes shifted back to meet her father's angry ones, biting her lip before speaking quietly and calmly.
“The only thing you've ever done for me is cause pain. You are not willing to come to terms with that because you're self-centered. I don't care if you think I'm selfish for saying so, because in reality it's just you invalidating my emotions.” Haewon swallowed the lump in her throat.
“Oh, bullshit, Haewon. Don't try to victimize yourself here. I've given everything for you only for you to be a little slut and hang out with that damn boy all the time!” Mr. Seong yelled in pure anger, eyes widened with rage as Haewon shook her head, blinking away tears.
“You don't get to talk to me that way.” Haewon huffed, shaking her head off to the side frantically. “Just because you are my father, you don't get to treat me like shit.” She added, voice cracking.
“Oh, so now you're cursing in front of me? You think the world just revolves around you, huh?” The man chuckled, nearing her as he now stood in front of her.
“What on earth is going on?” Mrs. Seong furrowed her brows, robe wrapped around her as she stepped in-between them, a hand wrapped around Haewon's bicep as she pulled her daughter away from her husband.
“Oh, don't you have to interrupt everything?” Mr. Seong scoffed, head turning around to face his wife.
“Shut up. Do not speak to her like that.” Haewon let out in disapproval, tugging away from her mother's tight grasp.
“Haewon, please, just don't.” Her mother warned, shaking her head.
“Oh, so now you get to boss me around?” Mr. Seong raised his brows, as Haewon stared at him sharply.
“That's your wife! Don't speak to her that way, man.” Haewon finally raised her voice, filling up the living room as Mr. Seong’s eyes burned with anger.
“Listen here, Haewon. I am not your friend. You don't speak to me like that. You got that?” The man spoke between gritted teeth, pointing a threatening finger her way.
“And you, learn to raise a child. Your daughter is a bitch.” Mr. Seong demanded, disowning Haewon as his own right before her eyes as he stormed off, keys jingling down the hallway as he slipped his shoes on and slammed the front door shut.
Mrs. Seong sighed deeply, running a hand over her face as Haewon sniffled, blinking away her tears as she stared down at the floor in silence, processing everything.
“Did you have to argue with him?” Her mother's stressed out voice filled the room, as she glanced up and met her worn out gaze.
“I'm not gonna let him treat me like that without any consequence.” The girl uttered softly.
“Honey, sometimes it's better to just stay silent.” Mrs. Seong spoke quietly, brows furrowed tightly.
Haewon shook her head, clenching her jaw as she fiddled with the hem of her flannel, standing still and in silence before sucking in a breath and speaking yet again.
“I'm going to bed.” She uttered, walking away as she excused herself upstairs, closing the door to her bedroom and falling back onto bed with a huff, tears blurring her vision as she closed her eyes, attempting to soothe herself.
And within a few mere minutes, her night was ruined. Turned into a fit of anger and sadness, as she lay in silence in the darkness of her room whilst her father was most likely out drinking at a bar; or at his mistresses house.
