"your dad is always mad, and that must be why."

TIRED eyes fluttered open, met with the sight of a golden hue cast in her room, sunlight peeking through the blinds as her brows curved inward, eyes fluttering shut as a soft groan sounded past her lips.
Her mother's voice was muffled, but she could tell her tone was filled with frustration, even from upstairs in a closed bedroom.
Haewon rolled over in her bed, peeling her eyes open as she sat up, squinting slightly to check the time on the clock residing on her wall.
Eight in the morning, and she fell back onto her bed with a huff, having gone to sleep last night with the intentions of sleeping in whilst she could, before monday came around and school would open up again.
So, why was she awake? What unsettled her enough for her brain to wake her up so early, despite not having anything to do today?
Atlas, a deeper voice chimed into the conversation, a dry tone filled with disinterest sounded through the thin walls, as Haewon's eyes shot open, sitting up immediately.
Of course, Sunday.
One out of seven days was her father, Mr. Seong Hangyeol, was off work, allowing him no excuse to be out and to finally come home.
Haewon grumbled to herself, forcing herself out of bed and nearly tripping in the process as her foot got caught in her blankets.
Pushing her tousled hair out of her face, she sighed deeply as she reached out to open her closet, pulling out a pair of jeans, a white tank top and a flannel to wear over.
Stripping herself from her pajamas, she changed quickly into clean clothing, throwing her old ones into a hamper in the corner of her room.
After brushing through her hair and tying it up into a loose half-bun, the girl took a small breath and stared at her reflection in the mirror.
Deciding it was good enough, she carefully walked over to her bedroom door, biting down on her bottom lip as she pushed down on the handle, slowly pulling it open and wincing slightly as it creaked.
Once open enough to where she could get out, she stood still for a moment, making sure there was no movement coming upstairs, she trudged silently out of her room, socked feet sliding across the creaky wooden floors as she successfully made it across the hall and into the bathroom, where she successfully finished getting ready.
After going back into her room briefly, shoving a bunch of random stuff into her backpack before zipping it up and swinging it over her shoulder.
With a heavy sigh, she braced herself, opening her bedroom door fully as she moved quickly across the wooden floors, nearly slipping in the process as she held onto the railing attached to the wall as she hurried down the stairs.
The boring and slow conversation her parents were in came to an end at her presence, as Haewon looked over to the dining table of where they both sat.
Her mother, sipping on a cup of coffee whereas her father sat tall at the head of the table, newspaper spread out in front of him as rectangular glasses rested on the bridge of his nose.
"Good morning, gotta go!" Haewon rushed out, slipping one of her shoes on as she pushed the front door open, reaching down and swooping up her other shoe in her hands.
"Seong Hae—" She heard the voice of her father call out to her before the front door was slammed shut behind her, a small huff falling past her lips as she hobbled around on one leg as she struggled to get her left shoe on her foot.
After successfully getting it on, she regained her balance, footsteps picking up as she strolled through all too familiar alleyways, the fresh morning air fanning against her skin.
It was no secret that Haewon never had a good relationship with her father. Mainly because he was hardly even around when she was growing up; missing all of her major points within her life so far.
But, also because he truly wasn't a good person. Filled with animosity towards his own wife and daughter. Constantly finding excuses to stay out later on work nights.
Her mother thought that he was out cheating constantly, and her suspicions seemed to heighten after waking up late at night to find him having snuck out of bed into the living room downstairs, on a phone call with another woman.
It was hell when he was home, the quiet house filled with tension and oftentimes, heavy voices bouncing off of the walls, an echo of the two adults' dispute.
Arguments were something Haewon had become known to, although she didn't want to. She hated the consistent deflections, going back and forth for ages and the weight of the tension that lingered in the house once everything fell silent.
Turning down a familiar street, she walked up the small hill filled with rows of small, neighboring homes. Once getting to the one she was looking for, she pushed open the gate to get into the home, skipping up the concrete pathway to the door.
On the porch step, she knocked three times on the door, stepping back a bit as she fiddled with the hem of the flannel she wore.
Soon enough, the door was pulled open, a familiar face softening upon the sight of the girl standing alone so early in the morning.
"Ah, good morning, auntie." Haewon let out, bowing politely towards the older woman.
Mrs. Lee smiled, opening the door fully as she ushered the teen inside. "Oh, Haewon, come in, come in!" The woman smiled, stepping aside to allow her in.
"Is Heeseung home?" Haewon asked, as she placed her hand on the wall for support as she slipped her shoes off, leaving them neatly by the front door.
"Mhm. I believe he's in the dining room." Mrs. Lee informed, wiping her hands off on her apron as Haewon nodded quietly in response.
"We were just making breakfast, would you like some?" The woman asked, head tilting off to the side as the girl gently shook her head.
"Oh, no, I'm alright. But thank you." Haewon declined, as Mrs. Lee hummed in response.
"Alright, no worries. If you change your mind, let me know, dear. I don't mind." Mrs. Lee said reassuringly, patting Haewon's shoulder gently before brushing past her carefully, leaving her alone at the doorway.
Haewon smiled vaguely, brushing her fingers through her bangs as she made her way to the dining room, where the boy immediately entered her vision.
Sat at the table, eating a bowl of cereal as his gaze was focused on a random comic settled on the tabletop beside him, until he lifted his head upon seeing her approach him out of the corner of his eye.
"What are you doing here?" Heeseung laughed, as Haewon scoffed, scrunching her nose up as she settled into a seat beside him.
"Oh, shut up." Haewon let out along with a chuckle, rolling her eyes as she folded her arms across her chest.
"No, seriously, I thought you were sleeping in today?" Heeseung brought up, a brow raised as he settled his spoon down into his bowl after finishing the remainder of the cereal.
"I forgot my dad is home." Haewon answered simply, as Heeseung raised his brows, letting out a small "ah," in response as he nodded his head in understanding.
Heeseung knew of the issues within her family, being her closest friend, they shared almost everything with each other.
"So you're here to escape?" He asked, a breathy laugh falling from his lips as Haewon hummed in response.
"Yeppp." Haewon sighed out, nodding as she tucked her bottom lip between her teeth.
"Are you seriously eating cereal when your parents are cooking probably the most delicious breakfast ever?" Haewon said, her tone judgemental yet filled with sarcasm as she grimaced playfully.
"I was too hungry to wait." Heeseung muttered, shrugging as he pressed his lips together in a thin line.
"So impatient." Haewon teased, earning a snicker from the boy beside her as he shook her head.
"Also, how are you going to make fun of me for reading full house when you're here, reading some random comic?" Haewon added, narrowing her eyes.
"It's totally different! And why are you attacking me all of the sudden?" Heeseung complained, watching as a smile spread widely across her features.
"Because it's fun!" Haewon giggled, shifting comfortably in her chair as Heeseung shook his head and bit back a smile.
"I'm going to kick you out of my house."
"Your parents wouldn't let you, even if you tried." Haewon pointed out, as Heeseung grumbled lightly in response.
"Yeah, right." He let out, snickering as he drummed his fingers against the tabletop. "What do you even want to do today? I mean, assuming you're staying here until later?"
"Huh? Oh, I don't know. I didn't come here with a plan. I just woke up hearing his voice and got dressed quickly, ran out of the house and came here." Haewon explained, leaning forward to rest her chin in the palm of her hand.
"Did you even have time to eat?" He huffed, raising a brow.
"No, of course not. There's no way in hell I was staying to eat with that man." Haewon grumbled, shuddering at the thought.
"Oh, my parents are literally making breakfast. I can just ask them to make you—" He began, only to quickly be shut down.
"Lee Heeseung, don't. I'll kill you." Haewon shook her head in disapproval, as Heeseung let out a sigh.
"Why not? You'll starve."
"Don't be dramatic, I barely eat breakfast anyway. I'm never hungry for it." She said truthfully.
"Fine, fine." Heeseung mumbled, clicking his tongue. Placing both of his hands on the end of the table, he scooted his chair out, allowing him room to stand up.
"Give me a few minutes to get changed and then I'll come down and we'll figure out what to do to pass time." Heeseung said, earning a small nod and a thumbs up from the girl.
