"just trust me, you'll be fine."

WHAT little sunlight left in the evening sky flooded into the school hallways through the windows, as the slam of her locker echoed throughout the hall.

Haewon swung her backpack around her shoulder as her camera strap hung around her neck, making her way out of the building as she began her journey to the school stadium, where Heeseung's soccer practices were held.

As she got closer and entered the small stadium, she could hear the faint sound of chatter and laughter, and the team ended their practice in a scrimmage.

Haewon chuckled upon hearing how much fun they all seemed to be having, as she climbed up into the bleachers, a small breath leaving her lips as she slid her backpack off of her shoulders, a light breeze brushing through her hair of which had finally been let down from the ponytail she had put it in earlier on in the day.

As she waited for the remainder of his practice to come to an end, she busied herself as she messed around with the camera she had hung around her neck, looking through the pictures and videos she had taken over the school year.

Mainly of which were attempted professional shots, as she was learning how to work a camera properly— even given the opportunity to take shots for the school newspaper.

Her gaze shifted up, looking over at the soccer team. Although a bit hesitant, she shrugged and positioned her camera in her hands, focusing on the scene in front of her as she snapped a quick photo, thinking it could go into the highlights of the soccer team in the year of 1999.

The girl looked down at her camera, reviewing the shot before deeming it to be good enough. All whilst, the blow of a whistle surrounded the area, the scrimmage they were all in coming to an end as the sun had finally set, the sky facing into a dark blue, as an orange ring hung around the horizon.

Haewon perked up at the noise, curious eyes looking over to see the team huddling up together, presumably closing off their practice for the night to return home and rest properly in time for the next day.

She grabbed her backpack, slipping her arm through the strap of the backpack as she treaded carefully down the steps to the bleachers, lips pressed together in a thin line.

A few minutes passed, and their team chant filled her ears, officially ending the practice. Her eyes wandered around before landing on Heeseung, who walked over to the sidelines of the field, where his sports bag remained.

Haewon wandered towards the boy, until she caught his attention. The smile on his face grew bigger, as he wiped away the beads of sweat that had formed on his forehead as a result of the training he had put in, mixed with the humidity of the spring air.

“I was just wondering if you were still here.” Heeseung chuckled, sitting down in the grass as he took off his soccer cleats, swapping them for a pair of Nike slides.

“I just finished a little while ago, and sat in the bleachers for the remainder of your practice.” Haewon explained, shrugging lightly as she waited for him to finish taking off his soccer gear.

“So detention wasn't bad?” He raised a brow, shoving his things into his bag.

“No, it was bad. I mean, it was just me and two other people cleaning up the entire gym. It was awkward and miserable.” Haewon shuddered, threading her fingers through her hair.

“Well, at least you're done with it now, right?” Heeseung tilted his head, zipping his bag up and hoisting himself up from the ground.

“Yep.” The girl breathed out, pressing her lips together in a thin line.

“Just don't get detention again and you'll be all good.” He added on with a small laugh, as the girl then huffed and rolled her eyes playfully.

“No promises.” Haewon smirked, crossing her arms over her chest as Heeseung shook his head in response.

“Hey, Heeseung, do you still have my water bottle?” A new voice chimed in, as her head turned in the direction of the familiar voice.

“Huh? Oh, yeah. It's right here.” Heeseung replied, crouching down to swipe up the water bottle, of which lay on the grass. He tossed it over to his friend and teammate, who muttered a small ‘thank you.’

Turning his head to face the girl, the boy raised his brows in surprise, opening his mouth to speak amusedly. “Haewon? What are you doing here?”

“Hey, Jake.” Haewon chuckled, raising her hand to wave slightly towards the boy standing only a few feet in front of her, as Heeseung stood in-between them.

“I got detention, so I had to stay and clean the gym.” She added on with a shrug, as Sim Jaeyun — otherwise known as Jake, looked at her with his jaw hung ajar.

Sim Jaeyun, a transferee from Australia. He moved to Korea only a year prior, and joined the soccer team within the following timespan, becoming close with Heeseung as he was his teammate.

Ultimately, this led to being introduced to Haewon herself as she showed up to a lot of their soccer games in support of her best friend, followed by the constant hang outs between friend groups.

Although she wasn't as close to the boy as Heeseung was, she considered him a good friend and someone she could be comfortable around, after getting to know him over the past year.

“Detention? For what?” Jake let out, opening the cap to his water bottle and taking a sip.

“Because the people in this school are dumb.” She huffed out, tone of voice filled with sarcasm.

“She was late to class.” Heeseung answered for her, giving her a small jab to the stomach using his elbow. Haewon grumbled and placed her hand on his shoulder, shoving him to the side as payback.

“Oh, yikes.” Jake mumbled, clicking his tongue as he crossed his arms over his chest, shaking his head off to the side. “Well, hey, at least I got to see you because of it. It's been awhile since all of us have hung out together.”

“Mm, likewise.” Haewon nodded her head, turning her attention from Heeseung, who was currently dramatizing the pain from her shove, over to Jake as she let a small smile reside in her lips.

“We should get together soon. It'd be fun. We could go.. to the movies or an arcade together? Something fun like that.” Heeseung suggested, picking up his soccer bag.

“But, what movies are even out right now?” Jake asked, raising a brow.

“I'm not entirely sure. Maybe we should just scratch the movie idea, and go to the arcade or something. Maybe even the boardwalk? Anything that sounds fun and is doable with a large group of people, assuming the others would be going with us.” Heeseung replied with a shrug.

“Yeah. We can talk to everyone about it tomorrow at school. Let's all meet at lunch.” Haewon chimed in with a nod.

“Don't you have your little broadcasting club during lunch tomorrow, though?” Heeseung recalled, narrowing his eyes as Haewon made an O shape with her mouth.

“Oh, shi— shoot, my bad. I forgot. Yeah, I do. I have a late lunch, so I won't be in that conversation.” Haewon mumbled, pressing her lips together in a thin line.

“It's fine though, right? We can just fill you in on all of the details after school, or something.” Jake pointed out, keeping a positive attitude.

“Exactly. Plus, I'll be over at your place tomorrow night regardless. I'm tutoring you, remember?” Heeseung recalled, a smirk taking place on his face as she knew she hated the discussion of said topic.

“I hate you.” Haewon groaned, bringing her hands up to run over her face.

“I swear, that's the only three words you know.” Heeseung rolled his eyes playfully.

“Haha, very funny.” Haewon forced a laugh, giving him a blank stare as she raised a brow before brushing it off, turning her attention to Jake, who was getting ready to leave as he grabbed his bag.

“Well, I better get going, or I'll miss my bus ride home. Haewon, it was nice to see you. Bye guys.” Jake smiled sweetly towards the two, waving goodbye as he began walking towards the exit.

“Bye Jake!” Haewon called out, waving her hand.

After bidding their goodbyes, Heeseung adjusted the strap of his backpack, turning his head towards the girl who stood before him, the lampposts shining down over her.

“You ready to go?” He asked, to which he received a small breath and a nod.

“Mhm.” Haewon hummed, adjusting the sleeves of her blazer before she looked back up to meet his gaze, as he cocked his head to the left, gesturing for her to walk with him as they made their way out of the school stadium.

After a moment in silence, nothing but their footsteps against the smooth pavement of the street filling their ears. “What's with the camera?”

“I was just messing around with it. I'm still learning some controls.” Haewon said, her eyes traveling down to the camera hanging around her neck with the strap.

“I see.” Heeseung chuckled, eyes lingering over her as he watched her movements. “If I didn't know you any better, I'd say you're pretty attached to that thing recently.” He added on, lips pressed into a smile.

Haewon snickered, eyes forming two small crescents as she lifted the camera strap over her head, holding it carefully in her own two hands.

“Well in my defense, it's fun. I've been so bored with my life, and you know that. So this is like.. a new hobby that I enjoy and that can actually keep me entertained.” She spoke in defense.

Heeseung hummed, smiling as he nodded his head. “I know, I know. I'm glad you're having fun. Joining the broadcasting club was a good idea, huh?”

Haewon nodded cheekily, fingers working delicately as she switched on the camera. She moved the camera in the direction of him, pressing record.

“What are you doing?” Heeseung laughed out, tilting his head in confusion as she suddenly pointed the camera towards him.

“Say hi.” Haewon spoke behind the camera, bright eyes focusing on the small screen, using it as her eyes as she watched as he smiled and waved towards the camera.

“Should I interview you?” She asked jokingly, as Heeseung smiled and nodded his head. “Go for it.” He agreed, looking over at her.

“Huh, really? Wait.” Haewon breathed out a laugh, unprepared for her agreement.

“Mm, what are your goals for 1999?” She questioned, raising a brow as Heeseung paused, tilting his head as he thought about an answer.

A few seconds passed, and he uttered a response.

“I think.. in the year of 1999, I wanna do my best to focus on my grades so I can get into a good college after graduation. And, I also want to better myself as a soccer player in terms of skill and communication.” Heeseung spoke softly, nodding his head along to his own words.

“Ohh, good answer.” Haewon murmured, humming in content.

Heeseung chuckled, thinking for a moment before looking back over to her. “What about you?”

“Me? My goal this year is to just make it past senior year and not drop out.” She said, her tone of voice laced with sarcasm.

The boy stifled his laughter, huffing as he shook his head at her response. Haewon turned her camera off, letting the strap hang from her neck as she adjusted her hair.

“You’ll be alright. I know you will.” Heeseung said in encouragement, swinging his arm around her shoulder to tug her closer.

“I wouldn't count on it, but okay.” The girl sighed out, lips pursed as Heeseung shook his head quietly, before changing the subject to one of which was more lighthearted as he walked her home.
