september 7th, 1989 - south korea.
"HEESEUNG, slow down!" The eight year old called out, chasing after the boy as they ran through the forest, tall grass and flowers tickling her exposed skin as her breath was heavy.
The little boy looked back, a wide smile spread across his face before he turned his head back, a laugh falling from his lips as his doe eyes were open completely, taking in the scenery as the rays of sunshine cast a golden hue upon his surroundings.
One wrong misstep was all it took, slipping on a loose twig as she fell to the ground with a yelp and a huff, scraping her knees.
Lee Heeseung paused, hearing the cry out in pain coming from his best friend. His chest heaved up and down, tired from running and playing around in the forest.
He turned around, his small features twitching in concern as he crouched down in the grass alongside his friend, scanning her expression as he noticed the tears that formed at her waterline, caught in her long eyelashes as a frown painted her lips.
"Are you okay, Haewon? I'm really sorry." Heeseung mumbled guiltily, tilting his head as he wrapped his arms around his friend, hugging her softly to calm her down.
Seong Haewon sniffled, wiping her tears with her hands as she looked down at her scraped knees, small specs of blood filling her vision. "It stings." She murmured, blinking away her tears.
Heeseung stuck his bottom lip out in a small pout, unsure of what to do as he looked down at her knees, small fingers fiddling with the fabric of his T-shirt as he frowned.
Instead, he hugged her again as an apology, feeling half-responsible as he was running too fast for her to keep up, resulting in the misplacement of her footing and the outcome of the minor injury.
"I'm sorry." He muttered to her, hands wiping away her tears as he paused, pulling away from the hug he had her in. "Do you wanna go home now?"
At the question, Haewon shook her head. Despite her fall and the slight sting following it, she was having too much fun to go home so soon, wanting to continue playing and exploring the forest with her best friend.
"It's okay." Haewon let out, sniffling quietly as she dusted her hands off, dirt collecting over her skin as a result of leaning them back on the ground.
Heeseung hummed in agreement, standing to his feet as he extended his hand out for her to take, helping her up as he held her hand tightly.
"We'll be more careful this time, promise." The little boy said determinedly, nodding his head as Haewon giggled and nodded along with him, her steps more calculated and careful.
It wasn't long before the two kids found themselves in a meadow play fighting, using sticks as pretend swords, or collecting what they deemed to be cool rocks and pretty wildflowers.
Sitting down in the grass, picking flowers as Heeseung stood off in the distance, crouched down as he looked for rocks, he eventually gave up and plopped down beside her, setting the rocks he had gathered down in front of them.
"What are you doing?" He asked curiously, as Haewon turned her head to face him.
"I'm gonna bring back flowers for your mom and my mom." Haewon replied, gathering a bunch of flowers in her hands as Heeseung nodded.
"That's nice." He murmured, earning a hum from the girl.
"My mom said we have to be back before dark, so we have to go soon." He recalled, as Haewon nodded her head. "Okay." She responded.
A moment in silence passed, before the little boy spoke up again. "Haewon?" He inquired, pursing his lips.
"Yeah?"
"Do you think we'll be best friends forever?" He questioned curiously, picking at the grass as the little girl nodded without a further thought.
"Of course we will!" Haewon confirmed, a cheeky smile spread across her lips as she watched his face light up.
"Really?" Heeseung asked, nudging her with his shoulder.
"Yes, really!" She chirped happily, nodding her head repeatedly as she set the bundle of flowers down in the grass in front of her. "I pinky promise." She added on, sticking out her pinky.
Heeseung giggled, locking his pinky with hers as he narrowed his eyes playfully. "You better not break it." He spoke, only to receive a small scoff and the shake of the head from the girl.
"I would never." Haewon snickered, shaking her head stubbornly.
