Was he dead? That was the only question that resonated through their entire beings.

Yudhishthira's pov

I was feeling exhausted, and the thought in my mind on how I want to go on. My body slowly, giving up. Mentally I did not want to give up. Denial of death.

Then acceptance, I gave up and its just like falling asleep. My eyes felt heavy, and the world began to disappear under my closing lids. The world surely unfocused, like squinting my eyes shut.

I did not want to succumb to this impending darkness, I felt numb, I could not move, even breathing felt like an effort. I was trying but it felt like someone was dancing on my chest, my lungs felt like they would burst out any moment, I could not feel my own body.

Suddenly I felt like someone yanked me out of it and suddenly it became peaceful, it felt peaceful to die. I saw nothing but darkness but for the first time, my mind was at peace. I could not remember anything, what I based my life on. No, nothing at all, no one I knew nor any insecurities. My mind was blank.

Happiness lay in dying.

It was peaceful to die. All the problems of the world long-forgotten and the promise of a better new world- far away from here. It was not just a moment ago that I was suffering in life yet nothing of it could be remembered now- no face, no name.

In fact, what was I? What had I been and what did I look like? Nothing came to my mind but it didn't matter, I was at peace.

Beautiful, eternal visions came to my mind. I felt detached, everything painful seemed so far away.

It was beautiful, the sweet air kissing my lips, my salt-watered soaked feet parading up the soft shores, all sloppy between my toes. Trees too high to see, blinded by the eye of heaven burning through the leaves, and through the trickling streams meandering gently through the pathways. My mind was a swirling vortex filled with these iridescent colours of beauty and sunshine, and the smell of the fresh salt was so perfect my eyes were filled with warm droplets of satisfaction.

Looking at all this sand makes me want to sit and play with it like I used to do when I was a little kid, doing the castles and the funny shapes. I can hear the wind whispering in my ear like trying to say something. If I look back, I see the blue sea with its waves crashing and splashing like they are having a water fight. Out in the distance I can hear sounds of other animals that I can't distinguish but that as I walk more and more, I feel that they are moving along with me making me company.

A sweet lull song was playing, which reminded of me of how Mata Kunti used to sing me to sleep long ago.

There was no one to stop me, no duties, no obligations, no status quo to maintain, nothing, just freedom.

Suddenly there was no complete darkness, as a few rays of light pierced through the air, making me moan in displeasure. Then, the sweet lull song disappeared, almost instantly and a bland hum filled my ears- one that was achingly familiar.

The feeling of distance was gone as soon as it came. The dream place was now left in my memories. It wasn't close anymore. I saw it moving away as every fibre of my being felt pushed as I tried to resist it, it was painful, way more painful than dying. I tried to reach out with my both hands but it felt like a cloud, it was so beautiful, so distant, and I was trying my best to resist the force and hold on to it, hold on to my last piece of hope.

It was growing smaller with every passing moment, as I desperately tried to reach out for it, trying to fight hard the resistance which made my body felt, as if flames were licking my skin, tsunamis were pushing me back.

The pain shot up my arm like fire. I cringed. It exploded in my head with a blinding whiteness. It made me dizzy. It made me reel. The pain was like needles that had been dipped in alcohol had been jammed through my skin, like my arm had been replaced with ice and electricity wired straight into my spine.

I screamed in agony as I fell to my knees and rubbed my hands together hoping to ease the pain, but it did not help. It was writhing my entire existence. I saw the dream land disappear. And, just when the pain was at its worst, it dissipated, like fog off some terrible lake and it was numb and dark- again.

He did not want to go back. He did not want live again.

Author's pov

Sahadev, bheem, nakul, Draupadi did not have it in themselves to move from the door. Arjun was sobbing holding his dead brother's hand, karn was comforting arjun as tears streamed down his own face.

Their jaws shivered seeing their brother's dead body lying in a pool of blood. they did not want to believe it; it could not be possible. How could death be so unkind to his own son and take his life so early? But they had no idea of all the pain and struggle his brother had seen, this was rescue for their brother. Right now they would have done anything to have his brother back. They wanted to scream in anger at how crude life played.

If grief is a forest, then the death is its impossibly dark and winding center. Many grieving people find themselves stuck in this center, unable to move far past it, while others have somehow made it to the less dense, but still challenging, outskirts and refuse to look back.

They felt the numbness leave as a sense of present filled them and they ran towards him and grabbed his other hand. Bheem's shivering hand found it's way to his head as he swept away the hair from his face, even arjun wiped his eyes and everyone gasped in shock.

He looked like a ghost of his past self. There was absolutely no colour on his face as it was paper white. There was a slight smile on his face, except that there was no emotion on his face. It felt as if along with him, all beautiful, bright, and joyful things died.

Arjun dropped yudhishthira's lifeless hand, as he touched his white face as tears streamed down his face.

"It can't be-. You can't be. It is all a lie, I know that." Arjun shook his head in disapproval as he stroked his brother's face softly. His eyes trailed down to his back as his jaw clenched.

"I am going to kill the person who killed my brother." Arjun got up and picked his gandiv and a different fire blazed in his eyes.

Sahadev pulled arjun down and he whispered a no as a tear escaped his eye.

"How can you all just sit and watch when Bhrata Yudhishthira is here lying dead, murdered!" Arjun thundered as he pulled his bow string and murmured the most dangerous divine incantation for an arrow.

"Arjun!" Karn got up horrified as he pulled gandiv from arjun's arms. "What are you doing? Why are you trying to do something, which you will regret later!" Karn said as he hugged arjun, providing solace as arjun's anger transformed to pain.

"We could have saved him. We should have been with him all day. If we were here, this would have not happened." Sahadev sobbed.

"You know, I had once vowed, that I would behead the person who spilled a single drop of his blood, now he is dead in front of me but I can't do anything." Arjun whispered against karn's chest.

"Bhaiya, just wake up, I promise I will never make you run behind me for hours to get me off my mirror and eat food. I promise I will never scare baby deva with my pets or hide bhrata arjun and bhrata karn's arrows or add salt to bhrata bheem's ladoos. I won't even spend more time getting dressed compared to Panchali or Dhriti. Just wake up, I need you." Nakul sobbed as he held yudhishthira's lifeless hand as his pleas went in vain.

I cannot say, and I will not say
That he is dead. He is just away.
With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand,
He has wandered into an unknown land
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since he lingers there.
And you—oh you, who the wildest yearn
For an old-time step, and the glad return,
Think of him faring on, as dear
In the love of There as the love of Here.
Think of him still as the same. I say,
He is not dead—he is just away.

'No - no - no!' Sahadev was now shouting. 'No! Bhaiya! No!'

And Arjun fell down and shaked his brother, and Karn was kneeling beside them, and Yudhisthira's eyes stared without seeing, the ghost of his last laugh still etched upon his face.

"Do you hear that?" Arjun suddenly asked as silence filled the tense room. Concentrating harder they heard swords clashing which was getting louder and nearer with every passing second until an expensive vase right out side the ornate doors of his room as two girls came in, they both were sword duelling skilfully.

Dhriti and the girl who had killed yudhishthira. "It is her, she killed him!" Draupadi exclaimed as the pandavas plus karn pulled up their weapons.

"Stay away!." Dhriti screamed as bent back and ducked a skilfull attack but it tore the hem of her dress as she charged again at the girl.

"You can't defeat her; you don't know our tactics." Dhriti exclaimed as the girl pushed her to a wall.

"You can't defeat me Deepika!" Dhriti screamed as she interchanged their positions, Deepika slashed her sword at Dhriti's hand making her with from pain.

"Traitor!" Deepika screeched she pushed her again to the wall and dhriti ducked from below deepika's elbow and attacked her back

"I am not a traitor! I left bad for good." Dhriti responded in a same tone as she swept her sword but Deepika contradicted it with her own blow. They both were skilful, and yes Dhriti was right, they both did now fight in a normal way, but they had a totally different style.

"Then what about our best friendship." Deepika whispered dangerously as she inflicted another blow which dhriti avoided.

"What about all the times we plaited each other's hair, when we were kids, what about helping each other with boyfriend issues, what about sharing meals and laughing about everything even if we had no clue." Deepika said with a another dangerous blow which injured dhriti as she screamed."What about all of it?" hearing this dhriti shook her head negatively and responded with an equally dangerous blow and with a tone that matched deepika's.

"All those times we sat together and plotted pandava's death, all the times we went into wars together, those times are over. I told you a million times to leave the evil and join the good." Dhriti said as both of their eyes darkened significantly.

"Don't act so naïve. Weren't you the one who attacked these 4 when they were sleeping and made the illusion that this yudhishthira got them attacked? Didn't you lie to yudhishthira for months and tried to kill him whikle living with him?" Deepika said as she laughed humourlessly which ducking a sharp blow by dhriti.

The pandavas stood shook.

Dhriti's eyes softened for once as Deepika noticed her weak moment and charged at her again but dhriti climbed yudhishthira's bed with Deepika on her toes.

"Then what happened, you had your oh-so-magical moment of realisation and you left the evil for good. Cringe like a Disney movie." Deepika added wrinkling her nose in disgust.

"At least I realised sometime. Not like you, still hungry for their blood." Dhriti asked with equal disgust.

"You failed, I succeeded. It is the bitter trusth." Deepika said as dhriti injured her again as the silken canopies of yudhishthira's bed were torn by their swords and came crashing down.

"Who knew the duels we fought under the moonlight to help each other improve will lead to such blood thirsty duel to death." Dhriti said as she clenched her jaw and attacked again.

"Who knew? Fate sure is having a blast." Deepika laughed sarcastically skillfully contradicting the blow.

"Revive him, he is my brother." Dhriti said firmly.

"Is there hope?" Sahadev's voice came as Dhriti nodded.

"The dagger she attacked with has to be coated with a poison which can kill a person in half the time, the only consequence is that there is a remedy for it, nobody knows about, except the two of us, tridev, and mata durga." Dhriti said continuing fighting.

"Oh- he is your brother, I will revive him." Deepika said suddenly soft and sugary as Dhriti silied softly but it did not last long as Deepika started cackling evilly.

"What did you think? I would revive him because he is your brother?" Deepika said laughing as they continued duelling.

"I will always miss you." Dhriti said as she gave a final blow making a clean cut and beheading Deepika as she panted due to her multiple injuries as she stared at her ex best friend's dead body and whispered.

"Who knew-." She turned to face the pandavas and Draupadi with guilt.

"No- We don't hate you." Karn said as he assured dhriti while dhriti began working on the buttons of her dress until she opened a significant part of it, as she took out her locked and opened the cork in the pendant and hand the bottle to nakul and she did the same with her best friend and took out the bottle and handed the same to nakul before taking both of the bottles and asking karn to open yudhishthira's mouth which he obliged as she thrust the liquids in the 2 bottles down his throat.

"Treat his wound." She told nakul and sahadev too which they gladly obliged and made everyone leave.

When only nakul, sahadev and yudhishthira were left they both started working on his wound and after an anxious hour of praying and nervousness with his dead face haunting them, they finally managed to finish the surgery.

Arjun and everyone came bursting in as they held his hand, they put a hand on his chest, as they felt his heart pumping weakly, the first sign of life in him.
"We need to let him rest, he needs ample of it to recover fully, if he does not get it, he might have severe after problems, which may have permanent injuries and memory loss." Nakul said as they all moved a little further to give him space to breathe.

They had almost lost him.

"He is unconscious and would stay unconscious for a few days." Sahadev said soflty as everyone left the room, letting him rest.

The fact he was here with them was enough to give their minds peace.
